    Application of Röchling ASA

Röchling ASA is charged as the primary polymer phase in compounds for unpainted automotive exterior mirror housings and cowl vent grilles where moulded-in black colour, high gloss retention, and stone-chip resistance are specified. The base resin dosage ranges from 72 to 85 wt%, with an acrylate-based impact modifier at 12 to 20 wt%, carbon black masterbatch at 0.8 to 1.8 wt%, a HALS package at 0.4 to 0.8 phr, and a phosphite processing stabiliser at 0.2 to 0.5 phr. Melt volume-flow rate is controlled to 8 to 18 cm³/10 min as measured to ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C/10 kg before compounding. Material compliance references IATF 16949:2016 process control, ISO 4892-2:2013 Cycle 1/B xenon-arc weathering at 3000 h with Δb* below 2.0 depending on pigment grade, ASTM D256-10 Izod notched impact above 15 kJ/m² at 23 °C, ASTM D638-14 tensile stress at yield above 45 MPa, and ISO 306:2022 Vicat B/50 above 98 °C. Raw-material export documentation is screened against REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XVII and EU ELV Directive 2000/53/EC Annex II for cadmium, lead, mercury, and hexavalent chromium. Pre-drying is conducted at 80 °C for 4 h to residual moisture below 0.02 % per ISO 15512:2019 when warehouse relative humidity exceeds 60 %. On production-scale injection moulding equipment with 24:1 L/D general-purpose screw and clamping force from 2500 to 8000 kN, the recommended melt temperature is 240 to 260 °C, mould temperature 50 to 70 °C, and holding pressure 60 to 90 MPa. Actual line data show that sinks near hot-runner valve-gate bosses are controlled when packing time exceeds 2.5 s/mm of nominal wall thickness; weld-line cosmetics on cowl vent grilles degrade when mould temperature falls below 45 °C. Terminal components include black high-gloss mirror shells, cowl vent covers, B-pillar appliqués, door handle trims, and unpainted grille surrounds.

Why Does Capstock Layer Adhesion Demand a Defined ASA Molecular Weight Window?

For PVC window lineals and exterior cladding produced by coextrusion, Röchling ASA is used as the weather-resistant capstock compound at 100 phr polymer base, with the finished profile containing 5 to 10 wt% ASA relative to total wall mass. The capstock formulation includes acrylic processing aid at 0.5 to 1.5 phr, an ester-type external lubricant at 0.2 to 0.6 phr, a HALS/benzotriazole stabiliser package at 0.5 to 1.0 phr, and rutile titanium dioxide at 4 to 8 phr for light colours; dark brown and black capstock may substitute iron oxide blacks at 0.8 to 1.5 phr. The ASA melt volume-flow rate is maintained between 6 and 12 cm³/10 min at 220 °C/10 kg by ISO 1133-1:2022, because higher-melt-flow variants cause interfacial instability at die lip temperatures above 205 °C. Extrusion uses a 35:1 L/D counter-rotating twin-screw main extruder for the PVC substrate at barrel set points of 170 to 195 °C and a 30:1 L/D single-screw capstock extruder at melt temperature 195 to 215 °C; the capstock layer is fed through a dual-strand distributor die with nominal thickness 0.15 to 0.5 mm. Vacuum calibration at −0.08 to −0.06 MPa and haul-off speeds of 1.5 to 3.0 m/min maintain profile geometry. Relevant compliance includes EN 12608-1:2016 for unplasticized PVC profile dimensional stability, RAL GZ 716/1:2019 for window quality, and reaction-to-fire classification tested to EN 13501-1:2018 where project specification requires. In coextrusion trials, interfacial peel was observed when the melt-temperature difference between substrate and capstock exceeded 15 °C; amine-based external antistatic agents are avoided because they interfere with the adhesion-promoting mechanism at the PVC–ASA interface. Terminal products include window lineals, door jambs, fascia boards, rainwater goods, and exterior cladding profiles exposed for more than 15 years to direct weathering.

Outdoor Enclosure Moulding Compounds: Comparative Tracking Index, Flammability, and UV Retention

Outdoor telecommunication and charging-infrastructure enclosures require a balance between weather resistance and dimensional stability under internal heat load. Röchling ASA is formulated as the polymer base at 78 to 88 wt%, with an impact modifier at 8 to 15 wt%, a hindered amine light stabiliser at 0.5 to 1.0 phr, and titanium dioxide at 3 to 5 wt%. For flame-retarded versions intended for unattended electrical equipment, phosphorus-based additive packages are incorporated at 5 to 15 wt% only after compatibility testing, because higher loadings reduce notched impact below 10 kJ/m² at 23 °C in ASTM D256-10. Injection moulding uses melt temperature 230 to 250 °C, mould temperature 40 to 70 °C, and a screw with 20:1 to 24:1 L/D; long flow lengths above 400 mm require multiple hot-runner gates and sequential valve opening to prevent weld lines on load-bearing boss positions. Terminal products include IP65 outdoor telecom cabinets, fiber distribution boxes, EV charging column housings, and electrical junction boxes. Materials are screened against RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XVII for export documentation.

For marine deck instrument pods and GPS antenna radomes, Röchling ASA is selected where polycarbonate homopolymer shows environmental stress cracking after repeated salt-fog exposure and solvent contact from sunscreen residues. The compound is built with 55 to 70 wt% Röchling ASA, 30 to 45 wt% bisphenol-A polycarbonate of melt flow rate 10 to 18 g/10 min at 300 °C/1.2 kg to ISO 1133-1:2022, and an acrylate-based impact modifier at 4 to 8 wt%. A carbon black masterbatch at 0.8 to 1.2 wt% provides UV opacity. Processing on a 25:1 L/D reciprocating screw injection-moulding machine with clamp force from 800 to 2500 kN uses melt temperature 245 to 270 °C, mould temperature 60 to 80 °C, and injection velocity profiles not exceeding 350 mm/s for thin wall sections of 1.2 to 2.5 mm. On production equipment, jetting near the submarine gate is observed when injection velocity exceeds 350 mm/s for wall thickness below 1.5 mm; reducing velocity to 200 to 280 mm/s and increasing gate diameter to 1.8 mm eliminates the defect. Marine electronics compliance is verified through IEC 60945:2002 thermal shock and damp heat cycles, while material weathering uses ISO 4892-3:2016 fluorescent UV exposure for 1500 h; impact strength is checked to ISO 179-1:2010 Charpy notched at −30 °C. Terminal products include GPS antenna radomes, radar brackets, instrument housing shells, and throttle control covers where dimensional stability and low moisture uptake below 0.35 % after 24 h immersion per ISO 62:2008 are required.

When ASA Replaces Coated ABS in Agricultural Hood and Fender Panels

Agricultural equipment manufacturers replace painted ABS panels with Röchling ASA compounds where ultraviolet degradation of uncoated ABS causes chalking and gloss loss after fewer than 2000 h of xenon-arc exposure. Röchling ASA is compounded at 68 to 78 wt% as the base resin, with a high-impact modifier at 15 to 25 wt%, a HALS stabiliser at 0.5 to 1.0 phr, and a pigment package at 1 to 3 wt% for non-metallic tractor colours. The formulation is extruded into sheet of 3 to 6 mm on a 33:1 L/D single-screw extruder with melt temperature 220 to 245 °C and polished roll stack temperature 75 to 90 °C; subsequently vacuum thermoforming is executed at sheet surface temperature 155 to 175 °C using double-sided quartz heating. Cold-mold tools at 40 to 60 °C reduce cycle time but increase internal stress in deep-draw fender corners, which is measured by opposing polarised light inspection. Compliance includes ISO 4892-2:2013 for weathering at 2500 h, ASTM D256-10 Izod notched impact above 20 kJ/m² at 23 °C, and ISO 6603-2:2000 multiaxial penetration impact at −30 °C for brittle failure detection. Terminal products include tractor hoods, fender extensions, side shrouds, combine panel covers, and cab exterior trim. Published data for continuous diesel immersion of this specific ASA grade is limited; hydrocarbon contact above 40 °C is therefore treated as an operational boundary because ASA shows environmental stress cracking in high-aromatic hydrocarbon exposure.

Thermoformed Spa Shell Edge Components and Equipment Bay Panels

In spa and pool equipment applications, Röchling ASA is adopted for components that combine intermittent chlorinated-water splash, solar load, and dark pigmentation. The compound uses 80 to 90 wt% Röchling ASA as the polymer base, with an impact modifier at 8 to 12 wt%, a UV/HALS package at 0.5 to 1.0 phr, and titanium dioxide or colour concentrates at 2 to 4 wt%. Sheet extrusion is performed on a 30:1 L/D single-screw extruder at melt temperature 220 to 240 °C, with vertical three-roll calendering at 80 to 100 °C to produce thicknesses of 0.8 to 6.0 mm. Thermoforming uses premixed forced-air ovens and sheet surface temperature 150 to 170 °C; mould temperature is held at 50 to 70 °C to avoid visible ripples on large flat panel surfaces. Bonding of formed parts to spa shells uses moisture-cure polyurethane adhesives with open time not exceeding 15 min at 23 °C and 50 % RH. Compliance for chemical resistance is tested to ISO 175:2010 using 3 ppm free chlorine water at 60 °C for 7 days; outdoor suitability is confirmed by ISO 4892-2:2013 and ASTM D4329-21 fluorescent UV practice. Terminal products include spa equipment bay panels, pool filter housings, ladder hinge covers, skimmer lids, and sacrificial UV-exposed trim profiles.
