Qingyuan Jiande ABS NB3620G is an acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene resin supplied as pellets for injection molding. The grade identifier NB3620G separates this material from the higher-viscosity extrusion grades in the same product family by a lower melt viscosity envelope and from flame-retardant ABS grades by the absence of halogenated or phosphorus-based flame-retardant packages. On production-scale injection molding machines with clamp force between 800 kN and 1,500 kN, stable melt-cushion control is observed when barrel zone temperatures are profiled from 190 °C in the feed zone to 230 °C at the nozzle and the mold temperature is held between 40 °C and 70 °C. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; the following values represent the expected class envelope and are not certified grade-specific limits unless confirmed against the Qingyuan Jiande technical datasheet.
Under ISO 1133-1:2022 with a 220 °C barrel and 10 kg load, the melt flow rate expected for a high-flow general-purpose ABS of this class is 18 g/10 min to 28 g/10 min. Capillary rheometry data for this product family, where published, shows shear-thinning from approximately 600 Pa·s at 100 s⁻¹ to below 200 Pa·s at 1,000 s⁻¹ when tested at 230 °C. The lower-viscosity melt reduces fill pressure in thin-wall cavities but also lowers die swell and melt strength during profile extrusion. This is the principal rheological distinction from extrusion ABS grades, which are frequently controlled to 10 g/10 min or lower under the same conditions.
Cavity-to-cavity fill imbalance in multi-cavity hot-runner tools with gate diameters between 0.8 mm and 1.2 mm is observed when the hot-runner manifold temperature drifts by more than ±5 °C. This processing window is a critical threshold for flat electronic housing covers because the high-flow resin responds to a 5 °C manifold offset with a shift in apparent melt viscosity sufficient to disturb the fill sequence. A hot-runner controller with per-nozzle thermocouple monitoring is required when the tool has more than 8 drop points. On a 1,200 kN clamp force machine with a 45 mm screw and 20:1 L/D ratio, screw recovery time for a 150 g shot of general-purpose ABS is typically 6 s to 9 s at a screw speed of 80 rpm, but the value should be validated on the actual machine because check-ring wear and back pressure interact with melt compressibility.
Notched Izod impact values for general-purpose ABS grades tested according to ISO 180/1A at 23 °C are typically between 15 kJ/m² and 30 kJ/m². The rubber-phase particle size distribution and effective volume fraction are stronger determinants of ductile-to-brittle transition than the melt flow rate alone. At −20 °C, general-purpose ABS may lose more than half of its room-temperature impact energy; this restricts use in enclosures subject to impact loading during cold-weather transport or installation. High-impact ABS grades are formulated with larger rubber particles or a bimodal rubber distribution and retain higher low-temperature toughness, but they exhibit lower melt flow and lower surface gloss. NB3620G therefore falls between a high-flow ABS with reduced toughness and a high-impact ABS with reduced flow, and the selection is governed by the required impact test at the minimum service temperature rather than by the room-temperature value alone.
Because tensile yield stress and flexural modulus under ISO 527-2 and ISO 178 for this class are bounded by 38 MPa to 48 MPa and 2,000 MPa to 2,500 MPa, stiffness-driven snap-fit designs require section-depth increases when the operating temperature exceeds 50 °C. When NB3620G is substituted for a heat-resistant ABS grade in a rear cover for a display bezel, the heat deflection temperature under ISO 75-2 at 1.8 MPa is lower by approximately 10 °C to 15 °C relative to grades containing α-methylstyrene or maleimide comonomers. The substitution is acceptable only where the continuous service temperature remains below the softening threshold and the part is not positioned near heat sinks, lamp ballasts, or other sources exceeding 75 °C. For power adapters and enclosures requiring UL 94 V-0 at wall thicknesses below 1.5 mm, NB3620G is not a direct replacement for flame-retardant ABS because the base resin is not formulated to suppress combustion; an FR ABS or PC/ABS blend is required.
The following table provides the expected property envelope for a high-flow general-purpose ABS of this class. It is supplied as a process-selection reference and does not replace certified lot-specific data from the producer.
| Property | Test method | Expected range for high-flow general-purpose ABS class | Process or design implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Melt flow rate | ISO 1133-1:2022, 220 °C, 10 kg | 18–28 g/10 min | Controls injection fill pressure; extrusion melt strength is reduced. |
| Density | ISO 1183-1:2019 | 1.03–1.07 g/cm³ | Affects part weight and weld line mass distribution. |
| Tensile yield stress | ISO 527-2:2012 | 38–48 MPa | Determines snap-fit load capacity and short-term creep resistance. |
| Flexural modulus | ISO 178:2019 | 2,000–2,500 MPa | Governs rib reinforcement and deflection under load. |
| Notched Izod impact strength | ISO 180/1A at 23 °C | 15–30 kJ/m² | Room-temperature toughness for impact-loaded enclosures. |
| Heat deflection temperature | ISO 75-2, 1.8 MPa | 85–100 °C | Upper limit for short-term thermal exposure under load. |
| Vicat softening temperature | ISO 306/B50 | 95–105 °C | Softening threshold for contact with hot surfaces. |
Rheological measurements on a rotational rheometer at 230 °C show that the dynamic viscosity of general-purpose ABS of this class crosses 1,000 Pa·s at a frequency of approximately 0.5 rad/s and falls below 100 Pa·s at 100 rad/s. Transfer from capillary to oscillatory data requires Cox-Merz assumptions to be validated because ABS is a multi-phase melt with yield-like behavior at low shear. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; direct capillary measurements on dried NB3620G are therefore preferable when simulating injection pressures above 80 MPa.
Under IEC 62368-1:2018 clause 6.4, enclosures for mains-powered equipment can require fire enclosure materials rated V-1 or V-0 depending on the distance from potential ignition sources and the internal power classification. Because Qingyuan Jiande ABS NB3620G is not a flame-retardant grade, the design must either separate the ABS part from arcing components by an internal metallic shield or substitute a compliant FR ABS. Independent of flammability, the grade should be verified for relative temperature index under UL 746B before use as an insulating support for current-carrying parts. If the part is exposed to UV in outdoor enclosures, carbon-black-free natural or colored ABS is susceptible to surface chalking and loss of gloss; a UV-stabilized ABS or an acrylic-capped ABS/ASA layer is then required.
Pre-drying is required when residual moisture content exceeds 0.05 wt%. A desiccant dryer operating at 80 °C for 2 h to 4 h with dew point below −30 °C is typical for general-purpose ABS. Insufficient drying produces silver streaks, splay, and loss of surface gloss on flat show surfaces, with defect density increasing when storage relative humidity exceeds 60%. For high-gloss black parts, cavity surface temperature control between 50 °C and 70 °C is more influential than melt temperature for reducing weld-line visibility, but it can extend cycle time by 10 s to 20 s compared with a 30 °C mold.
Electroplating grade ABS is formulated with a different butadiene rubber particle distribution and a higher polarity surface after chromic acid etch; this creates adhesion sites for electroless nickel and copper. NB3620G is not characterized for electroplating adhesion under ISO 2819, so plated exterior trim should be converted only after peel-strength coupons demonstrate adhesion above the specified minima. For decorative interior parts without plating, high-gloss black processing is viable if the mold surface finish is SPI A-2 or finer and the material is not contaminated with incompatible regrind.
The following matrix summarizes regulatory constraints relevant to enclosure applications; it is not a substitute for certified supplier documentation.
| Regulation or standard | Relevant clause or method | Typical verification for ABS enclosure material | Limitation for NB3620G |
|---|---|---|---|
| RoHS 2 | 2011/65/EU, (EU) 2015/863 | XRF screening per IEC 62321-5:2014; phthalate extraction per IEC 62321-8:2017 | Requires supplier declaration; no lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBB, PBDE, DEHP, BBP, DBP, DIBP above allowed maximum concentration values. |
| REACH | EC 1907/2006 Article 33, candidate list | SVHC communication at 0.1 wt% article threshold | Supplier candidate-list statement is mandatory; grade-specific data limited. |
| US EPA TSCA | 40 CFR Part 751 for persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic chemicals | Existing chemical inventory verification | Not a performance statement; import compliance requires separate documentation. |
| UL 94 | UL 94 HB or V classification as specified by end-product standard | Flame tests on end-use thickness; UL 94 V-0 not expected for non-FR ABS | NB3620G is not a flame-retardant grade and should not be listed as V-0. |
| IEC 62368-1 | Clause 6.4 fire enclosure requirements | Material classification or metallic shielding | Design must account for non-FR ABS unless shielded. |
Color concentrates containing high-pigment-load carbon black reduce melt flow by 5% to 15% depending on carrier resin and letdown ratio; the melt flow rate at the press should be measured after letdown rather than assumed from natural resin data. Incompatible polyolefin contamination above 2 wt% can produce delamination and loss of notched impact strength because the phase-separated domains initiate crack propagation under ISO 180/1A testing.
