Application of Qingdao Haier New Material PC/ABS NH-9016M20

Lower instrument panel carriers and glove box door inner panels molded from Qingdao Haier New Material PC/ABS NH-9016M20 are specified where interior air quality limits and dimensional stability after thermal aging are both contractually binding. The 20 wt% mineral-filled PC/ABS alloy reduces linear mold shrinkage to a range of 0.3%–0.5% in the flow direction when measured according to ISO 294-4:2018, whereas unfilled PC/ABS from the same product family typically exhibits 0.5%–0.7% under identical cavity conditions. Automotive interior programs invoke ISO 3795:1989 for horizontal burn rate, with many OEM specifications setting a maximum of 100 mm/min for unpainted structural substrates, and DIN 75201:2011 for gravimetric fogging with a condensate limit below 2 mg per 10 g specimen. VDA 278:2011-10 thermal desorption analysis is applied to control volatile organic compounds and semi-volatile organic compounds; OEM acceptance thresholds vary, but toluene-equivalent VOC values above 100 µg/g frequently force additional preconditioning ventilation. In production, 100 parts by mass NH-9016M20 is processed as received; 5 wt%–10 wt% clean sprues and runners from the same lot may be returned to the feed stream without shifting the nominal 20 wt% mineral loading. Regrind addition above 10 wt% is avoided in visible grain areas because batch-to-batch variation in Charpy notched impact at −30°C under ISO 179-1:2020 becomes wider. The downstream molding process uses a desiccant dryer at 80°C for 3–4 h to reach residual moisture below 0.02% as determined by Karl Fischer titration, followed by injection molding with a screw L/D ratio of 20:1–25:1 and compression ratio of 2.0:1–2.5:1. Melt temperature is held at 240°C–270°C, mold temperature at 60°C–80°C, and residence time below 8 min at 270°C to prevent PC-phase thermal degradation. Typical finished components include glove box door inner panels, lower instrument panel carriers, and center console substrates that are subsequently covered with skin or painted, making dimensional stability a primary acceptance criterion.

Why Does a 2.3 mm Nominal Wall in a Clothes Washer Control Housing Demand a Dew Point Below −40°C?

The hydrolysis threshold of the PC phase in NH-9016M20 becomes the controlling parameter when the nominal wall of a front-load washer control housing is fixed at 2.3 mm. Residual moisture above 0.02% by mass, measured by Karl Fischer titration of dried pellets, generates silver streaks on the visible surface and reduces Charpy notched impact at flow-front weld lines by 40%–60% compared with dry material tested under ISO 179-1:2020/1eA. In coastal molding plants where ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, a desiccant dryer with a dew point below −40°C and a drying schedule of 80°C for 4 h is the minimum practical control; closed-loop dew-point monitoring is required because hopper residence time beyond 30 min in an uncontrolled environment re-adsorbs moisture. The finished control housing falls under IEC 60335-1:2020 for household appliance safety, including the ball-pressure test of IEC 60695-10-2:2014 at 125°C, and under IEC 60335-2-7:2019 for washing machines. Compliance with RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II restricts cadmium, lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBB and PBDE in imported assemblies, while REACH Annex XVII screening applies to plasticized parts. For light-gray or white control housings, 2 wt%–3 wt% titanium dioxide masterbatch with a PC carrier is let down into 100 parts by mass NH-9016M20; carbon black masterbatch is limited to 0.5 wt%–1 wt% in dark variants because higher loadings reduce weld-line impact. Regrind is capped at 10 wt% because the mineral filler already reduces elongation at break, and additional heat history from reclaim broadens the melt-volume rate distribution. Migration of silicone oil from mold release or lubricant additives above 0.3 wt% is avoided; silicone migrates to the weld line and reduces weld strength in snap-fit towers. Injection molding of these control housings uses a 20:1 L/D screw with a back pressure of 3–6 bar and screw speed of 40–60 rpm. Nozzle melt temperature is held between 250°C and 270°C. The mineral-filled melt has a narrow processing window: below 240°C the flow front freezes in rib sections thinner than 1.0 mm, and above 280°C the PC phase degrades with acrid fumes and black specks within 2 min of static residence. Mold temperature is maintained at 70°C–90°C with pressurized water units, and a two-stage packing profile of 60% injection pressure for 2 s followed by 40% injection pressure for 5 s is applied to avoid sink marks over bosses on the visible surface. Terminal components include front-load washer control panel housings, top-load washer control bezels, and dryer fascia frames where dimensional stability and resistance to detergent splash are specified. Published data for NH-9016M20 at this exact wall thickness is limited; batch-specific weld-line impact should be obtained from the supplier.

Indoor low-voltage meter bases and distribution board bodies are molded from NH-9016M20 when the enclosure is expected to maintain dimensional stability under 75°C service temperatures and IP4X/IP5X ingress protection. The 20 wt% mineral filler lowers the coefficient of linear thermal expansion compared with unfilled ABS or PC/ABS, reducing warpage after post-molding drilling and busbar installation. Compliance for these components references IEC 62208:2011 for empty enclosures for low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies, IEC 60529:2013 for classification of ingress protection, and IEC 60695-2-11:2021 for glow-wire testing where live parts exceed 0.5 A. The UL 94 classification of NH-9016M20 must be taken from the supplier's UL Yellow Card for the specific lot; if the card lists only HB, the part cannot be substituted into a V-0 enclosure specification without requalification. RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 SVHC screening are the standard import documentation requirements for EU projects. Formulation is kept as 100 parts by mass NH-9016M20 with 15 wt%–20 wt% clean in-house regrind; this regrind level is acceptable only when the molded enclosure has no transparent window or snap-fit arm shorter than 3.0 mm. Antistatic masterbatch at 2 wt%–4 wt% is added only when surface resistivity below 10^9 Ω/sq is specified under IEC 61340-5-1:2016; the mineral filler already raises surface hardness and abrasion resistance. Production tooling must use hardened steel inserts with HRC 54–56 at gate lands because the 20 wt% mineral filler accelerates abrasive wear in the runner system. Melt temperature is 240°C–260°C at the nozzle, mold temperature is 60°C–80°C, and draft angles are increased to 1.5°–2.0° on deep ribs to prevent ejection drag. Terminal parts include meter bases, distribution board boxes, and busbar support brackets that are drilled, tapped, and assembled into wall-mounted enclosures.

When Sub-Zero Impact at −20°C Governs Battery-Powered Garden Tool Housing Acceptance

When NH-9016M20 is selected for battery-powered garden tool clamshell housings, the acceptance criterion is not only room-temperature stiffness but the notched impact value after 24 h conditioning at −20°C, because cordless hedge trimmers and pole saws are stored in unheated garages and used in early morning cold. The end-use impact threshold is set by the tool manufacturer's internal specification under ISO 179-1:2020/1eA, not by IEC 62841-1:2014; published data for this specific grade at −20°C is limited, so first-article approval cannot rely on generic mineral-filled PC/ABS datasheets. Finished tool compliance is evaluated under IEC 62841-1:2014 for motor-operated hand-held tools, with material-level RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II declaration required for the polymer and color concentrates. Tensile modulus under ISO 527-2:2012 and HDT under ISO 75-2:2013 may be requested as incoming inspection records, but the governing value is low-temperature impact on the molded part. NH-9016M20 is processed neat at 100 parts by mass; 5 wt% clean regrind is permissible if the −20°C notched impact of the regrind-containing batch remains above the OEM's lower specification limit. Blending with 10 wt% unfilled PC/ABS to improve flow is not recommended for structural clamshells because flexural modulus drops by approximately 10%–15% and shrinkage anisotropy increases around screw bosses. Impact modifiers such as MBS at 3 wt%–5 wt% are avoided unless the supplier has validated the blend under ISO 179-1:2020/1eA at −20°C, because mineral filler plus elastomer can produce an unexpected drop in tensile strength. Injection molding uses 120–180 t clamp force for two-cavity clamshell molds; screw L/D ratio is 20:1–22:1. Melt temperature is 250°C–270°C, mold temperature is 60°C–80°C, and sequential valve gating is preferred over direct sprue placement on visible surfaces to move weld lines into ribbed non-aesthetic areas. The mineral-filled melt is more viscous than unfilled PC/ABS; injection speed must be high enough to prevent premature freeze-off in 2.0 mm side walls, but excessive shear at gate velocities above 300 mm/s can raise local temperature and cause gloss variation. After ejection, parts are conditioned at 23°C±2°C and 50%±5% RH for 24 h before assembly to relieve residual stress around brass inserts. Terminal parts include cordless hedge trimmer clamshell housings, pole saw handle halves, and portable blower fan shrouds.

Indoor telecommunications gateway housings fabricated from NH-9016M20 are required to maintain screw-boss pull-out strength after repeated thermal cycling from −10°C to 60°C and to satisfy the fire enclosure rules of IEC 62368-1:2020. The mineral filler increases the elastic modulus of screw bosses, reducing the diameter growth of self-tapping screw holes after repeated assembly in service. Compliance for these indoor ICT components references IEC 62368-1:2020 for audio/video, information and communication technology equipment, with UL 94 classification taken from the supplier's UL Yellow Card for the specific NH-9016M20 lot; if the product requires a fire enclosure, a V-0 listing is mandatory, whereas HB may be acceptable only for decorative non-fire-enclosure parts. RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 SVHC declarations are required for EU network equipment tenders. Formulation is 100 parts by mass NH-9016M20; 10 wt%–15 wt% clean in-house regrind is acceptable in non-appearance bottom housings, but visible top covers are limited to 5 wt% regrind because streak visibility increases with mineral-filled dark colors. If a light-color housing is specified, 2 wt% PC-based color masterbatch is used; conductive carbon black above 5 wt% is not added because it lowers Charpy notched impact and can complicate ultrasonic welding. Thin-wall sections from 1.8 mm to 2.5 mm require injection speeds above 80 mm/s and a hot runner manifold with 2.0 mm valve gates. Melt temperature is kept at 250°C–270°C and mold temperature at 60°C–80°C. The screw uses a check ring and L/D ratio of 20:1–22:1; back pressure of 4–8 bar maintains melt homogeneity without overheating the PC phase. Ultrasonic welding at 20 kHz and 30 µm amplitude is used for joining top and bottom covers; near-field welding is preferred for boss-to-hole joints, while far-field welding is not recommended because the mineral filler attenuates ultrasonic energy. Terminal parts include GPON optical network terminal housings, indoor 5G router bottom chassis, and fiber termination boxes.

Medical Diagnostic Monitor Housing Dimensional Stability and Chemical Cleaning Regimes

Medical diagnostic monitor housings molded from NH-9016M20 are installed on ultrasound carts and patient monitoring trolleys where dimensional stability must be retained after repeated chemical disinfection. The main compliance boundary is IEC 60601-1:2012/AMD2:2020 for medical electrical equipment; because the housing is a non-patient-contact enclosure, ISO 10993-1:2018 biocompatibility evaluation is not automatically triggered, but hospital procurement often requests a material declaration covering skin-contact-free external parts. Cleaning regimen validation is performed with 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes and 0.5% sodium hypochlorite solution; PC/ABS has limited resistance to strong ketones and aromatic hydrocarbons, so cresol-based disinfectants and acetone-based cleaners must be excluded from hospital cleaning protocols. The 20 wt% mineral filler improves flatness after molding and after hospital-grade washing, reducing warpage in large flat panels that must align with touchscreen bezels. NH-9016M20 is processed at 100 parts by mass as supplied; if custom color is required, the masterbatch is limited to 2 wt% with a PC carrier because higher levels can reduce chemical stress-crack resistance after repeated alcohol exposure. Regrind is limited to 10 wt% for cosmetic surfaces and 15 wt% for internal rear covers; plasticizer migration or silicone-based mold release above 0.2 wt% is avoided because it can cause surface haze after disinfection. Injection molding uses a mold temperature of 80°C–90°C, higher than typical PC/ABS, to minimize molded-in stress that later contributes to environmental stress cracking under isopropanol. Melt temperature is 250°C–270°C; screw L/D ratio is 20:1–25:1. If stress cracking is observed during pre-production wipe testing, annealing at 70°C for 2 h may be introduced, but published data for NH-9016M20 in this specific disinfection regime is limited, so a 100-wipe cycle validation is required. Terminal parts include ultrasound diagnostic cart monitor housings, patient monitor rear enclosures, and laboratory analyzer front bezels.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Qingdao Haier New Material Co., Ltd. designates NH-9016M20 as a pelletized polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene alloy within the NH-9016 engineering thermoplastic series. The base resin system contains a polycarbonate-rich continuous phase, an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene modifier, and a mineral component associated with the M20 designation. The suffix M20 is commonly interpreted as a 20% mineral-modified composition, but no public ISO 1043 designation for this exact grade confirms filler typology, particle aspect ratio, or surface chemistry. That distinction is critical for part design because the addition of a mineral phase changes density, melt viscosity, mold shrinkage anisotropy, tensile elongation at break, and notched impact response compared with unfilled polycarbonate/ABS grades in the same series.

Published data for this specific configuration is limited. The grade should not be selected for structural or regulatory applications solely from class-average PC/ABS values. A complete lot-specific specification request should include density by ISO 1183-1:2019, ash content by ISO 3451-1:2019, melt volume-flow rate by ISO 1133-1:2022 at 260 °C/5 kg, tensile modulus and yield stress by ISO 527-2:2012, notched Charpy impact by ISO 179-1:2010, heat deflection temperature by ISO 75-2:2022 at 1.8 MPa, mold shrinkage by ISO 294-4:2018, and coefficient of linear thermal expansion by ISO 11359-2:2021. Without at least these values, processing windows and part tolerances remain class-level estimates rather than grade-specific engineering data.

Moisture control is the first processing constraint. Polycarbonate/ABS alloys hydrolyze when residual moisture exceeds approximately 0.02% by mass at melt temperatures above 260 °C, producing splay, molecular weight loss, and reduced weld-line strength. At relative humidity above 60%, mineral-filled pellets can absorb surface and interstitial moisture during open-hopper transfer. Drying in a dehumidifying hopper dryer with a dew point no higher than -30 °C for 3 h to 4 h at 85 °C to 95 °C is required before melt processing unless residual moisture is verified below the stated threshold by ISO 15512:2022. Central drying systems with conveying lines longer than 15 m should maintain a closed-loop dew point of -40 °C or lower to avoid re-absorption. Regrind additions above 20% by weight are not recommended for mineral-filled PC/ABS because repeated shear shifts filler particle size distribution, increases melt viscosity variability, and reduces low-temperature impact retention.

What Melt Temperature, Tool Surface Temperature, and Residence-Time Boundaries Govern Injection Molding of NH-9016M20?

Melt processing of mineral-filled PC/ABS generally requires a barrel temperature profile from 230 °C to 240 °C in the rear zone rising to 260 °C to 270 °C at the nozzle. The upper nozzle bound is normally reserved for thin-wall sections below 1.2 mm or high-flow-length parts where the mineral phase restricts flow. Tool surface temperature is commonly held between 70 °C and 90 °C; mold temperatures below 60 °C increase frozen-in orientation, reduce textured-surface replication, and elevate residual stress near the gate. Maximum melt residence time should not exceed 8 min at the upper nozzle temperature. Longer residence times accelerate polycarbonate degradation and produce carbon dioxide, yellow shift, and surface splay. Shot size should remain between 40% and 70% of barrel capacity to limit residence in the screw channels. Hydraulic injection pressure typically falls between 80 MPa and 120 MPa. Screw backpressure of 0.5 MPa to 1.0 MPa assists mineral dispersion without excessive shear heating. A reciprocating screw with 20:1 to 25:1 L/D and compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 is appropriate; vacuum venting is recommended when volatile residues are present.

Clamp force demand for mineral-filled PC/ABS commonly lies between 0.45 tonne/cm² and 0.60 tonne/cm² of projected area. Thin-wall parts below 1.2 mm nominal wall thickness may require the higher value because the mineral filler reduces melt compressibility at the advancing flow front. Gate blush and sink marks have been observed on production lines when packing pressure is lowered too early; for this material class, holding pressure should be maintained until gate freeze, and gate diameters below 0.8 mm tend to freeze prematurely in mineral-filled grades. Published data for the specific NH-9016M20 processing window is limited, so initial trials should use a three-level nozzle temperature design with drying and shot size held constant.

For mold-filling simulation, viscosity data should be fitted to capillary rheometry at 240 °C, 260 °C, and 280 °C using ISO 11443:2021. The mineral phase raises low-shear viscosity and typically reduces shear thinning relative to neat PC/ABS; this changes gate freeze, flow length, and pressure-velocity boundaries. Generic PC/ABS viscosity data are not sufficient for predicting weld lines or air traps in mineral-modified grades. If the supplier cannot provide viscosity curves, mold trials should include short shots at 60%, 80%, and 95% fill to map the actual flow front under production pressure.

For supplier validation, a 50 kg bagged sample lot should be installed in a closed-loop hopper system. In-process samples collected at 2 h intervals and tested for melt volume-flow rate after drying should not drift more than ±10% between lots. Larger drift may indicate mineral content variation or inadequate drying. Thermogravimetric analysis by ISO 11358-1:2022 can quantify decomposition onset near 360 °C to 400 °C for mineral-filled PC/ABS; values below that range indicate ABS-phase thermal oxidation or volatile contamination. This production-scale validation is more useful than datasheet single-point values when the model code changes from unmodified to mineral-filled because filler dispersion depends on screw design and residence time.

In electrical enclosure, appliance structural bracket, and indoor electronic housing applications, mineral-filled PC/ABS grades are specified when dimensional stability at continuous service temperatures from 60 °C to 80 °C is required and when unfilled PC/ABS would develop unacceptable post-mold warp or anisotropic shrinkage at long flow lengths. The mineral phase reduces coefficient of linear thermal expansion in the flow direction to roughly 35×10⁻⁶ K⁻¹ to 55×10⁻⁶ K⁻¹ measured by ISO 11359-2:2021, compared with 70×10⁻⁶ K⁻¹ to 90×10⁻⁶ K⁻¹ for neat PC/ABS. This reduction supports mounting parts to metal inserts or maintaining tolerances below ±0.05 mm during thermal cycling. The same mineral phase lowers Charpy notched impact and elongation at break; rib root radii below 0.5 mm, sharp gate freeze regions, and weld lines at corner bosses become potential crack initiation points when impact load is transferred across highly oriented flow fronts. Weld-line strength of mineral-filled PC/ABS is typically below that of neat PC/ABS because filler particles align parallel to the flow front and reduce load-bearing area at the knit line. Two-gate tool experiments measuring weld-line tensile stress by ISO 527-2:2012 are required for load-bearing enclosures.

Compared with unfilled grades in the same series, NH-9016M20 is expected to exhibit higher flexural modulus, lower isotropic mold shrinkage, and reduced surface gloss. Compared with glass-fiber-reinforced PC/ABS, the mineral modification sacrifices tensile strength and stiffness but usually produces lower machine wear, better surface finish, and less orientation-induced anisotropy; glass-fiber-reinforced systems typically exceed 5000 MPa tensile modulus, while 20% mineral-filled PC/ABS commonly remains in the 3200 MPa to 4800 MPa range. Compared with flame-retardant PC/ABS grades, NH-9016M20 is not automatically classified as flame retardant. A flame rating such as UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm must appear in the supplier’s lot-specific documentation with the exact UL file number and test thickness; otherwise the material cannot be substituted into electrical enclosures that require glow-wire or needle-flame compliance. Similarly, no food-contact status should be inferred from the base resin. FDA 21 CFR 177.1580 or equivalent compliance is not granted unless the grade is explicitly declared by the supplier. RoHS 2011/65/EU and REACH SVHC status should also be confirmed from the certificate, particularly if the mineral surface treatment contains silane or stearate chemistries.

Mineral-Filled PC/ABS Property Envelope and Trade-Off Against Neat Resin

The ranges in Table 1 are compiled from representative commercial PC/ABS and mineral-filled PC/ABS technical data published under the cited methods. They are not certificate values for NH-9016M20 and are included only to show the expected direction of property change implied by the M20 mineral designation. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; therefore, these values must not be used for part design, mold steel calculations, or UL submissions without confirmation against the supplier’s lot certificate.

Mold shrinkage and coefficient of linear thermal expansion are the two properties most strongly affected by mineral addition. In tool design, the shrinkage values in Table 1 indicate that cavity dimensions should be steel-safe in the flow direction; for NH-9016M20, the exact anisotropy ratio must be confirmed by 48 h post-mold measurements rather than assumed from the class envelope. If the supplier certificate reports notched Charpy impact below 10 kJ/m² at 23 °C, the part should not be specified for drop-impact enclosures or snap-fit arms loaded transverse to flow unless a gate relocation and higher tool-temperature trial demonstrates acceptable performance. Chemical exposure limits also must be observed: mineral-filled PC/ABS can fail under environmental stress cracking when exposed to aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, and some amine-rich industrial cleaning agents. Compatibility with production cleaners or gasket compounds should be verified by strain-gage coupon testing under service load rather than by resin family assumption.
