In refrigerator door end-cap tooling, Qingdao Haier New Material PC/ABS NH-9012 is introduced through a valve-gated hot runner with 2.5 mm to 3.5 mm gate diameters and sequential valve movement to displace the weld line away from hinge bosses. The feedstock is pre-dried in a desiccant-bed dryer with a dew point at or below −40 °C for 3 h to 4 h at 85 °C to 95 °C; pellet moisture above 0.02 wt% before plastication produces splay and hydrolysis-induced reduction in molecular weight. Melt temperature measured by air-shot pyrometry is maintained between 260 °C and 275 °C, while the tool surface is held at 60 °C to 80 °C to balance gloss, cycle time, and shrinkage. Hold pressure at the nozzle is set at 40 MPa to 70 MPa, with back pressure of 2 bar to 5 bar and screw surface speed limited to 0.15 m/s to 0.25 m/s on a 20:1 to 24:1 L/D barrier screw. The end-cap part is typically 2.0 mm to 3.0 mm thick with a flow path up to 400 mm; filling at 120 mm/s to 200 mm/s injection speed avoids premature solidification at the hinge cover. After ejection, post-mold shrinkage stabilizes at 0.4 % to 0.7 % in flow and 0.5 % to 0.8 % transverse after 24 h at 23 °C; a post-cooling fixture is required when hinge pin hole diameter tolerance is under ±0.10 mm. Tensile yield values for unfilled PC/ABS of this class are 52 MPa to 58 MPa under ISO 527-2/1A/50, notched Izod impact at 23 °C is 45 kJ/m² to 60 kJ/m² under ISO 180/1A, and flexural modulus is 2100 MPa to 2400 MPa under ISO 178. These ranges are not manufacturer-quoted NH-9012 certified values; the lot-specific certificate of analysis must be compared before cavity pressure is fixed.

Flow-path limitation in deflector vanes is controlled not by nominal MVR alone but by the transition to shear-induced instability at the flow front when the wall thickness drops to 1.8 mm to 2.2 mm. On multi-cavity tools of 8 to 16 cavities, NH-9012 lots with MVR 9 cm³/10 min to 14 cm³/10 min at 260 °C/5 kg under ISO 1133-1:2022 require melt temperatures of 265 °C to 280 °C and mold temperatures of 70 °C to 90 °C to maintain surface replication on textured dust vanes. Capillary rheometry curves for unfilled PC/ABS of this MVR band typically show apparent shear viscosity of 160 Pa·s to 300 Pa·s at 1000 s⁻¹ and 60 Pa·s to 110 Pa·s at 5000 s⁻¹ at 260 °C; the exact curve must be requested for NH-9012 because the ratio of high-shear to low-shear viscosity determines gate blush and jetting. Injection speed is set at 200 mm/s to 350 mm/s with a fan gate or hot-tip gate of 1.5 mm to 2.0 mm effective diameter. The pack-pressure profile is divided into 50 MPa to 80 MPa for 4 s to 8 s, followed by 30 MPa to 50 MPa for 6 s to 10 s to compensate for volumetric shrinkage without overpacking the vane trailing edge. Cooling time is 12 s to 18 s for a 2.0 mm section, producing total cycle times of 35 s to 50 s depending on runner size. Weld-line strength at the splitter rib is measured by ISO 527-2/1A/50; if weld-line tensile strength falls below 80 % of the bulk value, sequential valve gating is implemented rather than increasing melt temperature, because prolonged residence time above 280 °C causes polycarbonate chain scission and yellowing in hot-runner dead spots. Mold temperature uniformity across cavities must be held within 5 °C and runner fill imbalance within 5 % to prevent vane warpage above 0.8 mm across a 350 mm length after 24 h at 23 °C.
When the control housing is ribbed below the detergent drawer, the load path from screw bosses into the top-deck surface determines cycle time and rejects more than tensile elongation at yield. NH-9012 parts are molded at 255 °C to 270 °C melt temperature and 60 °C to 80 °C mold temperature, with fill speed 80 mm/s to 150 mm/s for wall thickness of 2.5 mm to 3.0 mm. Screw bosses are specified with an outer diameter at least 1.6 times the thread major diameter and a pilot hole 0.8 times the thread diameter to avoid radial stress cracking. A thread-forming M4 screw in a 6.5 mm boss requires torque retention testing after 3 assembly cycles; the acceptance torque is set by the appliance manufacturer, not by generic PC/ABS data. For detergent contact, the relevant failure mechanism is environmental stress cracking; qualification includes exposure to 5 wt% sodium hydroxide solution and a proprietary household detergent solution at 40 °C for 72 h under 1 % tensile strain, evaluated according to ISO 22088-3 or equivalent OEM procedure. Published data for NH-9012 in this specific chemical environment is limited; therefore, production release cannot rely on immersion test results from other PC/ABS grades. Drying is identical to other NH-9012 operations: 3 h to 4 h at 85 °C to 95 °C, with a maximum pellet moisture of 0.02 wt%. If relative humidity in the feed zone exceeds 60 %, dried pellets must not remain open to plant air for more than 30 min, otherwise surface moisture re-absorption creates gas splay at the top-deck front edge.
Unpainted lower B-pillar trim and center console side panels require the same base resin to survive grain embossing and subsequent clip insertion without whitening at the gate. Lot-to-lot viscosity fluctuation in NH-9012 becomes the primary rejection variable when a 2.5 mm to 3.0 mm wall is combined with a flow path of 550 mm to 750 mm; MVR under ISO 1133-1:2022 should be monitored and held to a supplier-agreed band no wider than ±2 cm³/10 min around the certified value. Melt temperature is set from 250 °C to 275 °C, mold temperature from 60 °C to 80 °C, and injection speed from 150 mm/s to 280 mm/s to maintain grain clarity in deep-draw insert areas. Coefficient of linear thermal expansion for unfilled PC/ABS is typically 60 µm/m·K to 80 µm/m·K under ISO 11359-2; clip slots designed with less than 1.0 mm clearance may exhibit rattling after −20 °C to 80 °C thermal cycling unless expansion allowance is verified. For automotive interior use, the grade must be tested against OEM emission requirements such as VDA 277; a supplier declaration for NH-9012 is not a substitute for lot-specific emissions testing. Mold release agents and external lubricants must be excluded unless cleared for emissions testing, because hydrocarbon-based release residues contribute to fogging and exceed DIN 75201 limits. If the part is textured with a grain depth of 100 µm to 150 µm, holding pressure above 60 MPa can cause gloss difference at the texture peaks; pack pressure is therefore limited to 35 MPa to 55 MPa for the last 6 s of holding phase. Recyclate integration is not automatic for automotive appearance parts; if regrind is allowed, the ratio is capped at 15 wt% and only after full mechanical property re-testing under ISO 527-2/1A/50 and ISO 180/1A.
Hot-runner pressure drop across an eight-drop manifold in a 27-inch monitor back cover determines whether NH-9012 can be processed at the lower melt-temperature limit or must be pushed toward 280 °C. With a part wall of 1.5 mm to 2.0 mm and a flow length of 500 mm to 800 mm, filling analysis uses an apparent shear-rate window of 1000 s⁻¹ to 5000 s⁻¹; an unfilled PC/ABS grade with similar MVR typically exhibits viscosity fall-off that reduces manifold pressure drop to 30 MPa to 50 MPa, while the screw injection pressure reaches 120 MPa to 160 MPa. The NH-9012 lot should be pre-dried for 3 h to 4 h at 85 °C to 95 °C, and residence time above 270 °C should not exceed 10 min to avoid polymer degradation in the hot-runner manifold. Injection speed is set at 250 mm/s to 400 mm/s, with valve-gate sequencing delayed by 0.2 s to 0.5 s to move knit lines away from screw bosses and VESA mounting holes. Pack pressure is set at 60 MPa to 80 MPa for 5 s to 10 s, then reduced to 20 MPa to 30 MPa for 8 s to 12 s; excessive pack pressure above 80 MPa produces ejection deformation and increases shrinkage anisotropy. Shrinkage after 24 h at 23 °C is 0.4 % to 0.7 %, requiring a holding fixture if the VESA pattern flatness must remain below 0.5 mm across 200 mm. If UL 94 flame performance is a design requirement, NH-9012 must be tested at the exact production thickness; a 1.5 mm V-0 classification on a supplier datasheet does not transfer automatically to a 1.2 mm ribbed section. Unfilled PC/ABS back covers are often specified as UL 94 V-1 at 1.5 mm; any V-0 claim requires third-party yellow-card verification for the exact grade and thickness. Weld-line strength in the boss areas is checked by ISO 527-2/1A/50 at 23 °C, with a minimum 70 % bulk tensile retention for load-bearing VESA bosses.
A two-stage pack-pressure profile becomes necessary only when the part merges a 2.0 mm shell with a 9.0 mm to 12.0 mm screw boss at the battery interface. For NH-9012 in power-tool battery housings, melt temperature is held at 255 °C to 275 °C, mold temperature at 65 °C to 85 °C, and filling speed at 120 mm/s to 220 mm/s with edge gates having land lengths of 0.8 mm to 1.2 mm. The first pack stage, 50 MPa to 70 MPa for 3 s to 5 s, prevents sink at the gate; the second stage, 25 MPa to 40 MPa for 6 s to 10 s, limits residual stress at the boss root. Corner radii at the shell-to-boss transition are kept at or above 3.0 mm to reduce notch stresses. Notched Izod impact under ISO 180/1A at 23 °C for unfilled PC/ABS of this class is 45 kJ/m² to 60 kJ/m², but at −20 °C the value drops to 20 kJ/m² to 35 kJ/m²; battery-housing drop testing at −20 °C must therefore use the low-temperature energy absorption, not the room-temperature value. Contact with aromatic hydrocarbon oils used in motor assembly can induce environmental stress cracking; NH-9012 compatibility with the specific lubricant must be verified under 1 % strain at 40 °C for 72 h before releasing the housing. Double-insulated power-tool enclosures require creepage and comparative tracking index verification under IEC 62841-1; the CTI of NH-9012 is not established from generic PC/ABS filaments and must be reported by the material supplier as a PLC rating under UL 746A or a CTI value under IEC 60112. Drying conditions remain 85 °C to 95 °C for 3 h to 4 h; any lot stored above 60 % relative humidity requires immediate drying and oven verification. The housing is not suitable for ultrasonic welding if the joint line is within 5 mm of a boss root, because cyclic strain amplification at the boss root initiates microcracks after 1000 insertion cycles.

Qingdao Haier New Material supplies PC/ABS NH-9012 as a non-halogen flame-retardant polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene alloy in pellet form for injection moulding. The grade is intended for appliance enclosures, power-supply housings, and electronic data terminals where UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm is specified. The NH designation indicates that the flame-retardant package contains no intentionally added brominated diphenyl ethers or polybrominated biphenyls; performance relies on a phosphorus-based char-forming system in the polycarbonate-rich phase. This composition distinguishes NH-9012 from halogenated PC/ABS grades that achieve thin-wall flammability through bromine-containing additives and from unfilled general-purpose PC/ABS grades that lack the same flame-retardancy classification.
Supplier technical data for NH-9012 are summarized in Table 1. Values are representative lot data, not guaranteed specification minima. For end-product qualification, Qingdao Haier New Material should provide the current lot-specific certificate of analysis.

Mechanical test specimens are conditioned at 23 °C and 50% relative humidity per ISO 291:2008. Tensile properties are determined on type 1A specimens per ISO 527-2:2012 at a test speed of 50 mm/min; flexural modulus is measured at 2 mm/min per ISO 178:2019. Charpy notched impact energy is reported from edgewise impact per ISO 179-1/1eA:2023 using a 2 mm notch radius. Heat deflection temperature under 1.8 MPa is measured on flatwise specimens. These test conditions should not be transposed to service performance without part-level validation.
Mould shrinkage data are relevant for tool layout. The range of 0.4% to 0.7% varies with gate type, wall thickness, packing pressure, and flow orientation. For a rectangular edge-gated plaque of 2.0 mm wall thickness, flow-direction shrinkage is typically at the lower end and transverse shrinkage at the upper end. In production tools with hot runner systems and multiple gates, differential shrinkage is a primary cause of warpage; cooling channel layout and gate position should be optimized by mould-filling simulation using pressure-volume-temperature data for NH-9012 rather than generic PC/ABS data.
Applications reported for NH-9012 include washing machine control panel frames, air conditioner air guide housings, refrigerator display bezels, and small appliance power-supply shells. The grade is selected where enclosure parts require glow-wire ignition resistance at 850 °C per IEC 60695-2-11:2021. Compliance with IEC 60335-1:2020 clause 30.2 for unattended appliances should be verified on the finished part because glow-wire results depend on wall thickness, distance from live parts, and boss geometry. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; the material supplier does not provide blanket end-product certification.
The polycarbonate component of NH-9012 hydrolyzes at melt temperatures when moisture content exceeds 0.02%. Hydrolysis reduces molecular weight and produces carbon dioxide and bisphenol A degradation products, which appear as silver streak or splay at the flow front. In production-scale processing, parts moulded from material exposed to ambient air at 55% relative humidity without drying showed notched Charpy impact values falling from 35 kJ/m² to below 18 kJ/m² within 2 h of hopper residence. A desiccant dryer with a dew point no higher than -30 °C and a closed-loop hopper is required. Drying at 80 °C to 90 °C for 3 h to 4 h reduces moisture below the threshold; at relative humidity above 60%, the minimum drying time should be extended to 4 h. Moisture content should be verified by Karl Fischer titration according to ISO 15512:2019 before start-up.
On a production injection moulding machine with a 650 t clamp force, 120 mm screw diameter, and 24:1 L/D ratio, the following parameters are typical for parts with wall sections between 2.0 mm and 3.5 mm: melt temperature 245 °C to 260 °C, mould temperature 60 °C to 80 °C, injection pressure 80 MPa to 120 MPa, holding pressure 50% to 70% of injection pressure, and back pressure 0.3 MPa to 0.7 MPa. Screw peripheral speed should be kept between 0.2 m/s and 0.4 m/s; excessive screw speed introduces frictional heat and dark streaks. Cushion position should be held at 3 mm to 5 mm; failure to maintain cushion reduces holding pressure transfer and increases sink mark and warpage in thick sections.
Production trials with NH-9012 show that weld line strength in flame-retardant PC/ABS is lower than in unfilled general-purpose grades. When weld lines are unavoidable, gate location should be selected so the weld line forms in a low-stress area. The melt front temperature at the weld line should not fall below 230 °C; lower temperatures produce visible notched weld lines and reduce impact strength by more than 30% compared with non-weld material. Venting depths of 0.02 mm to 0.03 mm on the parting line are generally sufficient for trapped gas removal without flash.
The non-halogen package in NH-9012 functions primarily through intumescent phosphorus-based char formation in the condensed phase. Under thermal stress, the additive promotes crosslinking of the polycarbonate-rich surface, reducing heat release and mass loss. Thermogravimetric analysis according to ISO 11358-1:2022 typically records onset of decomposition near 385 °C under nitrogen, with a major degradation step between 400 °C and 520 °C. This places NH-9012 below general-purpose polycarbonate in decomposition onset but above brominated PC/ABS grades that release acidic decomposition species. In vertical flame testing per IEC 60695-11-10:2013, the grade achieves UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm, with afterflame times typically under 5 s per specimen.
Smoke density measured according to ISO 5659-2:2017 at 25 kW/m² is lower than for brominated equivalents. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, but comparative studies on non-halogen phosphorus flame-retardant PC/ABS systems report reductions in peak specific optical density of 20% to 40% relative to brominated counterparts. This is relevant for enclosed electrical compartments where smoke opacity affects occupant egress or service personnel visibility.
The processing thermal boundary is more restrictive than that of general-purpose PC/ABS. Residence time at melt temperature should not exceed 8 min at 250 °C. At 270 °C, maximum residence time should be reduced to 5 min; beyond these limits, the material yellows and Charpy notched impact values decline due to polycarbonate chain scission and degradation of the non-halogen flame-retardant package. In hot runner systems, dead spots and undersized gates cause local residence times above these limits; flow channels should be designed with full-round or trapezoidal cross-sections and no blind pockets. When production interruptions exceed 10 min, the barrel should be purged with virgin PC/ABS or polycarbonate melt at 250 °C.
Ground sprue and runner material can be reintroduced into the feed stream at up to 20 wt%. Field data from a washing machine control panel production line indicate that regrind at 20% reduces Charpy notched impact strength by 8% to 12% compared with virgin material. At 30% regrind, the material exhibits visible silver streaks and lower melt viscosity, increasing short shot frequency. Regrind particles should be uniform, free of fines below 2 mm, and passed through a metal separator to protect the screw and check ring. Drying of regrind is required at the same conditions as virgin material because regrind absorbs moisture more rapidly due to high surface area. Recycled material from painted or coated parts should not be used without detailed contamination analysis; paint particles can block venting and create delamination.
Compared with a typical brominated flame-retardant PC/ABS, NH-9012 avoids halogen acids in combustion and is more suitable for electrical enclosures where low smoke acidity is specified for evacuation environments. A brominated grade may achieve UL 94 V-0 at 0.8 mm; NH-9012 is specified at 1.5 mm, so wall thickness reductions below 1.5 mm require qualification on the actual part geometry per UL 746C or the relevant end-product standard. The denser char of the non-halogen system can also increase mould deposit formation at high melt temperatures; mould surfaces should be cleaned after every 20,000 to 30,000 cycles to prevent gas stains and vent blockage.
Against general-purpose unfilled PC/ABS, NH-9012 has lower melt flow. The MVR of NH-9012 at 260 °C/5 kg is approximately 18 cm³/10 min, while high-flow unfilled PC/ABS grades may reach 30 cm³/10 min to 45 cm³/10 min; this difference requires larger gates or higher melt temperature in thin-wall tools. However, NH-9012 provides inherent flame retardance without secondary halogenated additives and meets the same UL 94 V-0 rating at 1.5 mm. Compared with mineral-filled PC/ABS, NH-9012 has lower flexural modulus, typically 2400 MPa versus 3200 MPa to 4500 MPa for mineral-filled grades. It should not be substituted into load-bearing brackets where creep resistance or stiffness dominates design.
Chemical resistance is governed by the ABS phase. Contact with ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, and strong acids should be avoided unless parts are annealed and tested. For external enclosures, a compatibility test with common skin oils and commercial cleaning agents is advised. Stress cracking tests per ISO 22088-2:2006 may be used for screening. The use of amine-containing mould releases or polyurethane paint solvents should be avoided because of polycarbonate degradation and stress cracking.

NH-9012 is formulated for RoHS 2011/65/EU, but the final article must be assessed at the homogeneous material level. Supplier declarations generally list lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBB, and PBDE below 1000 ppm, and cadmium below 100 ppm. REACH Regulation EC 1907/2006 SVHC screening is required per Article 33; the supplier should provide an SVHC statement for the specific production lot. The material is not self-declared as food-contact grade; applications requiring FDA 21 CFR or EU 10/2011 compliance require separate migration testing on the finished article.
Surface quality from polished moulds is high, but the non-halogen flame retardant can produce jetting if gate velocity is excessive. Gate land length should be 1.0 mm to 2.0 mm for wall thicknesses below 3 mm; use of a full-round runner with diameter 6 mm to 8 mm assists pressure transmission. Mould temperatures below 60 °C reduce gloss and can induce delamination at the gate. Higher mould temperatures near 80 °C improve knit line appearance but extend cooling time by 10% to 15%.
On a production line for air conditioner air guide housings moulded from NH-9012, switching from a mineral-filled PC/ABS to NH-9012 increased melt flow length and reduced part weight by approximately 6% because of lower density, but the tool’s rib thickness had to be increased from 1.0 mm to 1.2 mm to maintain flame retardancy and stiffness.
