Application of Qingdao Haier New Material ABS TR-1067

Sheet extrusion for refrigerator inner liners imposes a direct melt-strength and sag-resistance requirement on ABS TR-1067. On a vented single-screw extruder with an L/D ratio of 30:1 and a gear pump holding die pressure between 8 MPa and 15 MPa, the resin is processed at melt temperatures from 210 °C to 240 °C; the three-roll stack is held at 70–90 °C to stabilize sheet thickness at 2.0–4.0 mm. Pellet moisture above 0.08% produces surging and gloss loss in the formed liner, so desiccant drying at 80 °C for 2–4 h is applied before extrusion. A production formulation for deep-draw liner sheet uses 100 parts virgin resin, 15–20 parts clean in-house regrind, and 3–4 parts white masterbatch; regrind above 20 wt% has been associated with increased gel speck counts on corner sections when barrel residence time exceeds 12 min. The sheet is heated to 140–170 °C and formed in a plug-assisted vacuum station with draw ratios up to 2.5:1 at corner radii not below 2.0 mm. Compliance for repeated-use food-contact surfaces rests on 21 CFR 181.32 for acrylonitrile copolymers and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011, with RoHS 2011/65/EU and REACH SVHC screening required for appliance export. Terminal part types include refrigerator inner liners, door liners, crisper drawer fronts, and internal air-duct baffles.

What Changes When This Grade Runs in Multi-Cavity Washing Machine Fascia Tools?

In washing machine top-plate and control-panel production, the flow length-to-wall-thickness ratio across a six-cavity tool can exceed 180:1 at a nominal wall of 2.2–2.8 mm, shifting the injection window toward higher melt temperatures and rapid screw recovery. ABS TR-1067 is dried to residual moisture below 0.05% in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 2–4 h before molding. A starting formulation uses 100 parts resin, 3–5 parts high-gloss black masterbatch, 0.2–0.5 parts silicone slip additive, and 0.1–0.3 parts process stabilizer. The molding machine clamp force is set between 500 t and 800 t, melt temperature at 220–240 °C, mold temperature at 45–65 °C, and switchover from velocity to pressure at 98% of fill volume; holding pressure is maintained at 50–70 MPa for 6–10 s to suppress sink marks around bosses. Compliance for the assembled appliance is tested under IEC 60335-1 Clause 30.2, with glow-wire testing per IEC 60695-2-11; non-flame-retardant ABS parts serving only as decorative or touch surfaces must be distanced or shielded from live parts to comply without an inherent UL 94 V-0 rating. Terminal products are washing machine top covers, detergent drawer fronts, control fascia frames, and window surrounds.

Valve-gate hot runners on split air-conditioner front-panel tools demand near-identical melt-front arrival across cavities, and the gate balance is set by adjusting each valve-gate opening to 1.0–1.5 mm so that the leading melt front reaches the end-of-fill sensor within 0.05 s across all cavities. ABS TR-1067 enters the barrel after moisture removal to 0.03–0.06%; the melt is held at 230–250 °C and injected into a mold held at 50–70 °C, with hold pressure at 50–70 MPa for 6–10 s. A production blend for indoor-unit front panels uses 100 parts resin, 2–5 parts high-dispersion color masterbatch, 0.2–0.5 parts UV absorber, and 0.1–0.3 parts antioxidant; pigment selection must avoid plate-out on the hot-runner tips above 240 °C. Compliance screening includes IEC 60335-1, RoHS 2011/65/EU, and ISO 15270:2008 for recyclability assessment; flammability of decorative front panels is evaluated under UL 94 HB unless the part encloses live components. Terminal parts are split air-conditioner front panels, air deflection louvers, display bezels, and chassis brackets.

Automotive Interior Trim Grain Retention, Odor and ELV Screening

Automotive interior programs evaluate ABS TR-1067 for pillar trims and low-side panels only after the material passes a sequence of weathering, fogging, and thermal-cycle tests. Injection molding uses a melt temperature of 230–250 °C, mold temperature of 50–70 °C, and back pressure of 0.5–1.0 MPa to maintain grain geometry cut into the tool at depths of 15–25 µm; draft angles are set at 5–7° to prevent visible scuffing during ejection. A typical color-matched formulation contains 100 parts resin, 3–5 parts color concentrate, 0.5–1.5 parts UV/antioxidant package, and 0.2–0.5 parts internal lubricant. Compliance is tested under EU Directive 2000/53/EC ELV, REACH Annex XVII, ISO 3795:1989 for horizontal burning rate below 100 mm/min, and DIN 75201:2011 fogging gravimetric limit typically below 2 mg; published data for TR-1067-specific automotive fogging is limited, so component-level validation is required. Terminal products include A-, B- and C-pillar covers, door grab inserts, center console side panels, and seat-side trims.

For small-appliance shells where drop impact at −10 °C separates ductile cracking from brittle fracture, the gate design and melt plasticizing history control field failure rates more than the base resin specification does. ABS TR-1067 is injection molded at melt temperatures of 220–250 °C and mold temperatures of 40–60 °C, with a screw cushion of 3–5 mm maintained at the transfer position to dampen shot-to-shot viscosity variation. A production formulation for vacuum cleaner housings uses 100 parts resin, 2–4 parts color masterbatch, 0.3–0.6 parts antioxidant, and 0.1–0.3 parts mold release agent; when an antistatic surface is required, 1–2 parts conductive carbon black masterbatch is added, but the reduction in notched impact resistance must be confirmed under ISO 179-1/1eA because published data for this specific carbon-black-loaded configuration is limited. Compliance is determined under IEC 60335-2-2:2019+A1:2021 for vacuum cleaners, IEC 60335-1, RoHS 2011/65/EU, and REACH SVHC screening. Terminal products are hand vacuum bodies, dust cup covers, brushroll housings, and cordless cleaner motor covers.

When ABS Replaces HIPS in Extruded Luggage Shell Systems

Hard luggage shell thermoforming changes the thermal history of the sheet at draw ratios above 1.8, so the selection of high-rubber ABS over HIPS is evaluated through surface gloss retention and corner thinning. Sheet is extruded on a 32:1 L/D single-screw vented line at a melt temperature of 210–240 °C, a chill-roll temperature of 75–95 °C, and a sheet thickness of 2.5–4.5 mm. A production sheet formulation uses 100 parts ABS TR-1067, 5–15 parts clean regrind, and 2–5 parts color masterbatch; higher regrind levels lower deep-draw corner tear resistance in thermoformed prototypes. Compliance for exported hard-shell luggage includes REACH Annex XVII, RoHS 2011/65/EU, and ISO 4892-2:2013 xenon-arc weathering for outdoor-exposed handles and shells, with ASTM D638-14 tensile yield used for incoming sheet quality. Terminal product types are hard-shell suitcases, instrument cases, protective cosmetic cases, and utility cases.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Qingdao Haier New Material supplies ABS TR-1067 as an unfilled acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin within its appliance-focused styrenics portfolio. The alphanumeric designation TR-1067 does not correspond to a publicly standardized ISO or ASTM classification; the supplier certificate of analysis and technical datasheet therefore control lot-specific values for melt flow, impact energy, heat deflection temperature, filler content, and stabilizer package. The material is a two-phase system in which grafted polybutadiene rubber particles are dispersed in a continuous styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer phase. This morphology governs the practical compromise between rigidity and notched impact resistance. If ash content is below 1.0 % according to ISO 3451-1, the grade is classified as unfilled; higher ash values indicate a filled or formulated variant.

The grafted polybutadiene rubber phase contributes impact energy absorption through crazing and shear yielding. The acrylonitrile content in the continuous phase improves resistance to nonpolar service fluids and increases mechanical strength, while the styrene component contributes processability and stiffness. The exact phase ratio for ABS TR-1067 is not published, but the intended behaviour in appliance end-uses is normally verified by notched impact, tensile stress at yield, flexural modulus, and melt volume-flow rate rather than by compositional disclosure alone.

What Material Attributes Separate ABS TR-1067 from HIPS and General-Purpose ABS?

Comparative reference data for unfilled appliance-grade ABS and high-impact polystyrene appear in Table 1. These values are not lot-specific for TR-1067 but define the typical published envelope within which unfilled ABS grades are expected to fall. Lot-specific property differences should be read against the supplier certificate of analysis, not against the reference band alone.

Property Test method Unfilled ABS reference envelope HIPS reference envelope
    Density ISO 1183-1 1.03–1.07 g/cm³ 1.03–1.06 g/cm³
Tensile yield stress ISO 527-2 35–50 MPa 15–30 MPa
Flexural modulus ISO 178 1.5–2.5 GPa 1.2–2.1 GPa
    Notched Izod impact, 23 °C ISO 180/1A 15–35 kJ/m² 5–15 kJ/m²
    Heat deflection temperature, flatwise ISO 75-2/B 75–100 °C 70–95 °C
    Melt volume-flow rate ISO 1133-1, 220 °C/10 kg 5–25 cm³/10 min 4–20 cm³/10 min
    Mould shrinkage ISO 294-4 0.4–0.7 % 0.4–0.8 %

Relative to HIPS, ABS grades of this class usually show higher resistance to environmental stress cracking when exposed to edible oils, alkaline cleaners, and detergent films, evaluated by ISO 22088-1 or ASTM D543. The improvement is derived from the acrylonitrile content in the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix. However, TR-1067-specific values for ester, ketone, and aromatic hydrocarbon contact require supplier data. The grade is not considered UV-stabilized unless the supplier certifies a stabilizer package and describes the accelerated weathering method, such as ISO 4892-2 with a xenon arc source. Unless the supplier certifies a flame-retardant formulation, no UL 94 rating should be assumed for this grade.

    Processing Windows and Drying Constraints

Moisture control is the primary processing constraint for ABS TR-1067. Residual moisture above 0.1 % by weight produces splay, silver streaks, and viscosity loss from hydrolysis at melt temperature. Drying is carried out in a desiccant dryer with a dew point not higher than -35 °C and airflow of 0.15–0.20 m³/kg·h at 80 °C to 90 °C for 3 h to 4 h. At production-hall relative humidity above 60 %, the material should be handled in closed hoppers with dry-air purge; open hoppers may allow sufficient moisture regain to require redrying.

During injection moulding of thin-wall appliance parts, a processing conflict arises between cavity filling and degradation of the polybutadiene rubber phase. Barrel settings from feed to nozzle are commonly 210 °C, 220 °C, 230 °C, and 230 °C, with melt temperature measured between 220 °C and 250 °C. Operation above 260 °C accelerates thermal oxidation of the rubber phase, producing brown streaks and decreasing notched impact energy. The usable melt-temperature window may be as narrow as ±5 °C when gloss uniformity and low-temperature impact retention are both specified. Injection moulding machines should be equipped with closed-loop barrel temperature control and nozzle thermocouples accurate to ±1 °C.

The screw is selected with a compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 and an L/D ratio of 20:1 to 24:1. High-shear mixing elements may generate local melt temperatures above the barrel setpoint and are generally avoided for this butadiene-containing material. Residence time at melt temperature does not exceed 5 min. If an interruption exceeds 15 min, the barrel is purged with general-purpose ABS or HIPS regrind. Regrind levels above 20 % require re-certification of notched impact and melt volume-flow rate on each lot because the polybutadiene phase undergoes progressive thermomechanical damage.

Observed failure modes on production-scale equipment include splay at vents when residual moisture is uncontrolled, brown streaking after residence-time excursions, and surface delamination if the melt is contaminated with polycarbonate or flame-retardant regrind. Inconsistent notched impact across a cavity often indicates rubber-phase degradation in hot-runner dead spots. Hot-runner systems should be designed with smooth flow paths and no stagnation zones. Colour shift from white to cream is an early indicator of accumulated heat history.

Storage in original moisture-proof packaging at 5 °C to 35 °C and relative humidity below 60 % is recommended. The resin should not be mixed with polycarbonate, polyacetal, or PVC regrind; small quantities of polycarbonate can cause delamination and gas generation at ABS processing temperatures. Contact with aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, and chlorinated solvents causes swelling or stress cracking. Service-fluid compatibility is tested according to ISO 22088-1 or ASTM D543 using the actual stress level and exposure time.

When Lot-Specific Certification Supersedes Nominal Datasheet Values

Because TR-1067 is not registered in a public CAMPUS or equivalent polymer data system, the statements above are subordinate to the supplier technical datasheet and lot-specific certificate of analysis. Conformity to RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, Annex II restricted substances, and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 must be confirmed by lot-level declaration or independent test report. For food-contact applications, migration testing is required under EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 or 21 CFR 177.1020. No general statement of compliance is sufficient without defined simulant, contact temperature, and contact duration. Surface-contact compliance statements should also identify the specific migration limit and test method.

Injection Moulding Set-Up on Horizontal Clamping Units

Typical set-up parameters for unfilled ABS processing on horizontal injection moulding machines are summarised in Table 2. Values are reference ranges, not grade-specific warranties. The shot mass should occupy 30 % to 70 % of maximum plasticizing capacity. Clamp force required is estimated from projected cavity area at 3.0–5.0 kN/cm². For refrigerator liner and housing tools, mould temperature is held at 40 °C to 80 °C, with higher temperatures used where surface gloss and knit-line strength are specified.

Parameter Reference range Equipment or standard reference
    Pre-drying temperature 80–90 °C Desiccant dryer
    Residual moisture ≤0.1 % ISO 15512
Melt temperature 220–250 °C Manual pyrometer or nozzle probe
Mould temperature 40–80 °C Water thermostat, cavity thermocouple
Hydraulic hold pressure 40–80 MPa Injection moulding machine manometer
Screw back pressure 0.5–1.5 MPa Injection unit
Injection fill time 1.0–2.5 s for walls up to 3 mm Cavity pressure or short-shot study
Screw compression ratio 2.0:1–2.5:1 Screw geometry
    Mould shrinkage 0.4–0.7 % ISO 294-4
Drying time 3–4 h Desiccant dryer

Quality evaluation for incoming lots includes notched Izod impact at 23 °C and -20 °C according to ISO 180/1A, tensile stress at yield at 1 mm/min according to ISO 527-2, and Vicat softening temperature using ISO 306/B50. Colour drift is measured with a spectrophotometer under D65/10° viewing conditions. A lot-specific ΔE* limit for white appliance grades is often 1.5 units, but the exact visual tolerance for ABS TR-1067 is set by the supplier or end-user plaque standard.

Tool design for ABS TR-1067 requires sufficient venting at the end of fill, especially in refrigerator inner door liners with long flow lengths. Vent depth is typically 0.02 mm to 0.05 mm; deeper vents allow flash under high injection speeds. Gates are positioned away from visible surfaces and into thick sections to avoid jetting and flow marks. Draft angles of 0.5° to 1.0° on textured surfaces and 0.25° on polished cores are used to permit ejection without distortion.

For sheet extrusion or thermoforming, a separate grade-specific thermal stability study is required. Sheet extrusion barrel profiles are typically flat in the 210 °C to 240 °C range, with a polished roll stack at 60 °C to 90 °C. Published data for this specific configuration with ABS TR-1067 is limited, so thermoforming depth-of-draw and wall-thickness distribution must be confirmed by pilot trials on production tooling. Paint adhesion and metallization performance require surface energy above 38 mN/m after cleaning or corona treatment; adhesion testing should follow ISO 2409 for cross-cut adhesion after drying.
