    More Introduction

Qingdao Haier New Material ABS TB-1001 is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer produced for injection-moulded appliance housings, refrigerator interior trim, washing machine panels, and consumer electronics frames. The grade is compounded on production-scale twin-screw extruders with 40:1 to 48:1 L/D ratios and vacuum devolatilization stages, then pelletized to a controlled moisture-stable cut. TB-1001 is not a general-purpose commodity ABS but a formulated injection grade in which the polybutadiene graft phase is distributed as discrete rubber particles with a measured particle-size distribution. This morphology determines the inverse relationship between notched impact energy and melt viscosity, and it separates TB-1001 from high-flow ABS grades used in ultra-thin electrical enclosures. In production practice, the grade is typically selected for parts with nominal wall thickness between 1.5 mm and 3.2 mm, where weld-line toughness, dimensional stability, and clean ejection from textured mould surfaces are required in the same manufacturing cell.

Specification Framework for Melt Flow, Impact, and Thermal Resistance

The grade is released against ISO and ASTM methods because TB-1001 is controlled through a certificate of analysis rather than a single nominal datasheet. The acceptance envelope below is based on standard ABS injection-moulding class data and should be verified against the producer’s batch certificate for the specific lot. The values should not be interpreted as design limits; they represent laboratory control targets under defined conditioning states.

The melt-volume-flow-rate envelope places TB-1001 in the medium-flow ABS range. The producer deliberately restricts the upper flow limit to preserve notched impact and thermal resistance. When a lot is certified near the 26 cm³/10 min boundary, notched impact tends to fall to the lower end of the band. This trade-off is characteristic of ABS and must be included in part design calculations. The Vicat softening temperature is measured under 50 N load with 50 °C/h heating rate and is not a continuous-use temperature. Continuous-use temperature must be verified through creep and ageing tests under the specific chemical and stress environment of the component.

Unlike extrusion ABS grades used for refrigerator sheet and profile, TB-1001 is formulated to reduce low-shear melt elasticity. Extrusion ABS retains a high molecular-weight fraction to generate melt strength for calendering and thermoforming; that same fraction produces jetting, frozen-in orientation, and unstable hot-runner flow in injection moulding. TB-1001 is adjusted toward a narrower molecular-weight distribution, which lowers the first normal stress difference at a given shear rate and improves surface replication in textured cavity surfaces. Compared with high-impact polystyrene, TB-1001 retains higher notched impact at equivalent melt flow and provides better resistance to hydrocarbon-based foaming agents and plasticizer migration. Compared with flame-retardant ABS grades, TB-1001 does not contain brominated flame-retardant packages and is not rated V-0 at 1.6 mm; it is normally certified HB under IEC 60695-11-10. Published data comparing TB-1001 specifically to high-gloss ABS in marbleized or flow-mark-sensitive parts is limited.

How Does TB-1001 Perform in High-Shear Thin-Wall Injection at Reduced Melt Temperatures?

Processing trials on hydraulic and electric injection-moulding machines with clamp force of 0.5 to 0.8 tonne per square inch of projected area show that TB-1001 fills thin-wall sections most consistently when the melt temperature is maintained between 220 °C and 240 °C. Lower melt temperatures of 200 °C to 210 °C are possible only with high injection velocity, short flow length, and mould temperature above 40 °C. Barrel zone settings commonly observed in production are 180 °C, 210 °C, 220 °C, 230 °C from feed to nozzle, with the nozzle held at 220 °C to 230 °C. Mould temperatures below 30 °C increase the frozen-skin fraction and reduce weld-line impact strength by an observable margin; 50 °C to 70 °C mould temperatures are used for structural parts. Cushion is maintained at 3 mm to 6 mm, and screw decompression is set between 2 mm and 5 mm to limit nozzle drooling in open hot-runner systems.

In capillary rheometry, the apparent viscosity at 1,000 s⁻¹ is substantially lower than the low-shear value measured at 100 s⁻¹, confirming shear-thinning behaviour relevant to thin-wall filling. However, the same behaviour can produce frozen-in orientation if packing pressure is removed too early. Gate freeze time for a 2.5 mm wall section is typically 1.5 seconds to 3.0 seconds at a gate diameter of 12 mm to 18 mm; premature transfer to hold pressure causes sink marks and low dimensional stability. Injection speed profile is often ramped from 20 mm/s to 60 mm/s screw surface speed, but the specific profile depends on the feeding section and gas vent depth. Hot-runner manifold temperatures should not exceed 240 °C for residence times above 5 minutes, because butadiene phase degradation produces yellowing and a rapid reduction in impact. The processing window is not designed for commodity-shape parts with wall thickness below 1.0 mm; such applications require a higher-flow grade and separate qualification.

Moisture is the first production boundary. At ambient relative humidity above 60% RH, TB-1001 pellets exposed in an open hopper can develop splay-visible moisture within 30 minutes. The resin should be dried in desiccant dryers with a supply dew point not higher than -30 °C at 80 °C to 90 °C for 2 to 4 hours. Equilibrium pellet moisture before moulding should not exceed 0.15 wt% and is preferably below 0.10 wt%. Overdrying above 95 °C for more than 6 hours oxidizes the polybutadiene phase, producing yellowing and a measurable drop in notched impact. In high-humidity climates or with regrind addition above 20 wt%, closed-loop vacuum drying is recommended because reprocessed material carries additional moisture and heat history. Regrind should not be used in visible surfaces without prior part-level evaluation for streaks, silver streaking, and weld-line discolouration.

When Regrind Ratios Exceed 20 wt% in Continuous Molding Runs

Addition of regrind changes the flow behaviour of TB-1001 because the first heat history lowers molecular weight and reduces the rubber-phase effective particle size. At regrind levels above 20 wt%, melt-flow rate typically shifts upward, and notched impact may decline by a measurable amount. The melt-temperature setpoint should be reduced by 5 °C to 10 °C when regrind exceeds this threshold, and pack pressure should be adjusted to avoid overpacking. Regrind particle-size distribution must be controlled, with maximum screen size not exceeding 8 mm, to prevent feeding instability in the machine throat. If regrind is mixed from coloured and natural ABS, melt-flow mismatch can cause visible flow lines; colour changes should be scheduled from light to dark, not the reverse. The producer’s batch certificate does not certify regrind behaviour, so a production-scale trial is required before using regrind in dimensionally critical parts.

Comparative Behaviour Against Extrusion ABS and HIPS in Appliance Components

In appliance components, TB-1001 is selected over extrusion ABS when the production route is injection moulding and the part requires a balance of notched impact and surface gloss. Extrusion ABS has higher melt viscosity at low shear and greater die swell, which is useful in sheet but creates gate blush and flow marks in injection parts. TB-1001 shows lower die swell and a more stable velocity profile through hot-runner manifolds. Against HIPS, TB-1001 provides higher notched impact at room temperature and improved environmental stress-crack resistance to cooking-oil aerosols, silicone release agents, and alcohol-based cleaners. However, HIPS may offer lower density and lower cost per cubic metre; TB-1001 is not the replacement when density-sensitive acoustic components are designed. Against polycarbonate/ABS blends, TB-1001 has lower heat resistance and lower notched impact at sub-zero temperatures, but it avoids the higher drying temperatures and higher mould temperatures associated with PC/ABS. The selection boundary is typically set by heat deflection under load: TB-1001 is used when the continuous-use temperature does not exceed 65 °C to 70 °C under low mechanical load, while PC/ABS or heat-resistant ABS is required above that threshold.

Regulatory documentation for TB-1001 is issued by the producer and is batch-linked. For standard pigments, the grade is formulated to support RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II limits for lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB, and PBDE. REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Article 33, SVHC communication obligations apply only if the grade contains candidate-listed substances above 0.1 wt%; standard TB-1001 formulations are typically declared not to contain intentionally added SVHCs, but the current candidate list must be checked for each shipment. Flammability is normally HB at 1.6 mm thickness, not V-2 or V-0; flame-retardant ABS should be specified for fire-rated requirements. Food-contact status is not inherent to TB-1001 and should not be assumed. No FDA 21 CFR clearance or EU regulation on plastic food-contact materials applies unless the producer has certified a specific food-grade version. The grade is not recommended for continuous outdoor UV exposure without protective paint or capstock, because the butadiene phase undergoes photo-oxidation and embrittlement.

Storage of TB-1001 should be in sealed bags, off the floor, and away from direct sunlight. Maximum recommended warehouse storage temperature is 40 °C, and bags should be resealed after opening. If a lot has exceeded the producer’s recommended shelf life of 12 months from production date, drying and melt-flow verification are mandatory before use. TB-1001 should not be mixed with polycarbonate grades without purging with a compatible carrier resin; the combination produces delamination and low weld-line strength. The operational boundary of TB-1001 is therefore defined by moisture control, shear history, regrind content, and melt residence time, rather than by a single property value.
