    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Qingdao Haier New Material ABS NH9604G20 is a glass-fibre reinforced acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection moulding compound in the Haier New Material NH series. The suffix G20 denotes a nominal glass-fibre loading of 20 wt%, confirmed by loss-on-ignition in accordance with ISO 3451-1. The grade is positioned for dimensionally stable, semi-structural parts where unfilled ABS lacks flexural rigidity, but the amorphous styrene-acrylonitrile matrix is preferred for its low water uptake and consistent mould shrinkage relative to semi-crystalline polyamide alternatives.

Published lot-specific datasheet values for this exact configuration remain limited outside controlled OEM material specifications. The numerical class ranges that follow refer to 20 wt% glass-fibre ABS compounds of equivalent construction and should be verified against the certificate of analysis for release properties before tool commissioning. Production use requires desiccant drying, wear-resistant injection unit components, and gate placement that accounts for anisotropic fibre orientation and reduced weld-line strength.

How Does 20 wt% Glass Fibre Alter the Mechanical Threshold of ABS?

Tensile properties measured at 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity according to ISO 527-2 or ASTM D638-14 place 20 wt% glass-fibre ABS compounds in a tensile modulus range of 5.0–6.5 GPa and tensile strength at break of 70–85 MPa. Flexural modulus determined by ISO 178 is typically 4.5–6.0 GPa. Heat deflection temperature under a 1.8 MPa load in ISO 75-2/A is normally 95–105 °C. Notched Izod impact by ISO 180/A is lower than that of unreinforced ABS; the 20 wt% glass-fibre ABS class typically records 7–12 kJ/m². These ranges are class-level engineering references, not lot-certified release limits for NH9604G20.

Elongation at break is substantially reduced by the glass phase. Under ISO 527-2, the 20 wt% glass-fibre ABS class typically records 2–3 % tensile elongation at break, compared with 15–25 % for general-purpose ABS. Snap-fit undercuts should therefore be replaced by bolted or heat-staked assembly unless full insertion trials are performed, because brittle fracture replaces ductile yielding.

Comparative typical published values for injection moulding compound classes are shown in Table 1.

Injection Moulding Parameters and Drying Boundaries

Melt temperature at the nozzle is typically maintained at 230–250 °C for 20 wt% glass-fibre ABS on a reciprocating-screw machine with L/D of 20:1 to 24:1 and a compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1. The barrel profile is normally set with rear zone at 190–210 °C, middle zone at 210–230 °C, front zone at 220–240 °C, and nozzle at 230–250 °C. Mould temperature is held between 50 °C and 80 °C. The lower half of this range minimises cycle time, while the upper half reduces frozen-in molecular orientation and improves filling of thin ribs and bosses. Low mould temperatures below 40 °C are not recommended for structural parts because the skin layer freezes too rapidly, creating a resin-rich surface over a fibre-rich core and increasing residual stress. For thin-wall sections below 2 mm, filling speed should be profiled from slow to fast to prevent hesitation marks.

Hot-runner manifolds and drops should be externally heated and maintained at 230–250 °C, with smooth flow paths to avoid stagnant fibre accumulation. Internally heated systems are less suitable because glass fibres can concentrate in cooler wall layers and alter local mechanical properties.

Residual moisture before melt processing must be reduced to ≤0.05 wt%. Glass-fibre sizing is hydrolytically sensitive, and dissolved water in the melt produces splay, weakens interfacial adhesion, and increases surface delamination. Desiccant drying at 80 °C for 2–4 h with a dryer dew point no higher than −20 °C is required when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %. Moisture content is checked by ISO 15512. Drying temperatures above 90 °C are not recommended because pellet agglomeration and oxidative degradation of the butadiene phase may occur in the dryer hopper.

Glass fibres orient preferentially in the mould-filling direction. Linear mould shrinkage measured according to ISO 294-4 is anisotropic: 0.15–0.3 % parallel to flow and 0.3–0.6 % transverse. Multi-gate tools therefore require weld-line placement away from tensile load paths; published mould-flow and mechanical testing for 20 wt% glass-fibre ABS indicate that weld-line tensile strength is retained at only 50–65 % of parent material. Screw surface speed should be kept below 0.3 m/s and back pressure between 0.3 MPa and 0.7 MPa to limit fibre attrition. Packing pressure is typically 40–60 % of the injection pressure, with hold time set by gate freeze-off rather than a fixed timer. Screw, barrel, and non-return valve wear are accelerated compared with unfilled ABS; bimetallic barrels, hardened screw flights, and hardened check rings are specified for sustained production campaigns.

Against general-purpose ABS, the NH9604G20 class raises tensile modulus by a factor of approximately 2.2–2.8 and reduces mould shrinkage by roughly 50–70 %, but notched Izod impact is typically reduced by 50–65 %. Surface appearance changes from high-gloss to a lower-gloss fibre-filled state; visible fibre streaking may require grained or textured surfaces. Against 20 wt% glass-reinforced polypropylene, the amorphous ABS matrix provides higher flexural modulus but lower heat deflection temperature at 1.8 MPa; 20 wt% glass-fibre PP typically reaches 135–145 °C, whereas the 20 wt% glass-fibre ABS class remains at 95–105 °C. The grade is therefore not a direct substitute for glass-reinforced polypropylene in continuous hot-air or under-bonnet service.

Compared with 20 wt% glass-reinforced polyamide 66, water absorption after 24 h immersion per ISO 62 is 0.2–0.6 % for the 20 wt% glass-fibre ABS class, while PA66-GF20 typically absorbs 1.0–2.0 %. This lower moisture uptake improves dimensional stability in humid appliance interiors and reduces property drift from plasticisation. However, continuous load-bearing use above 80 °C is not recommended unless creep data under temperature are generated according to ISO 899-2. The grade does not provide the continuous heat resistance of PA66-GF20 in hot oil, glycol, or aggressive chemical environments.

When High-Humidity Dimensional Stability Excludes Polyamide Alternatives

Chemical compatibility must be validated for the exact formulation. The styrene-acrylonitrile matrix is susceptible to stress cracking in ketones, esters, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and aromatic solvents; exposure testing under load should follow ISO 22088-2. No flame-retardant rating should be assumed beyond the lot-specific UL yellow card. Glass-filled ABS without a flame-retardant package is commonly classified UL 94 HB, but only the yellow card for the exact product determines the recognised rating. Food-contact or medical use should not be inferred from resin type alone; migration testing to EU 10/2011 or FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 must be completed on the finished formulation.

Within the Haier New Material NH series, the G20 designation must not be interchanged with unfilled or mineral-filled grades without reviewing the certificate of analysis; the glass content alters mould shrinkage, melt viscosity, screw and barrel wear, and structural load capacity. Regrind incorporation is possible at 10–20 % in non-appearance parts, but fibre attrition during regrinding is cumulative and must be validated on the target tool. Lot-to-lot variation in fibre length distribution and sizing chemistry affects weld-line strength and surface appearance; incoming material qualification should therefore include capillary rheometry at 240 °C and mechanical testing after a standardised moulding procedure, not resin type alone.
