Qingdao Haier New Material ABS FR-1009-C is positioned within the manufacturer’s flame-retardant ABS portfolio as a brominated acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene compound for injection-moulded electrotechnical and appliance enclosure components. Public documentation for this specific suffix is limited; therefore, procurement specifications should require the manufacturer’s certificate of analysis, batch melt-flow data, and current UL Yellow Card where applicable. The product is referenced in the producer’s series as a material intended to provide UL 94 V-0 vertical-burning performance in thin sections used around electrical connectors, power-module housings, switchgear covers, and small appliance structural parts. The exact grade-specific property window is not interchangeable with adjacent FR-1000-series suffixes because the C designation may reflect a defined colour pack, stabiliser adjustment, or downstream process variant.
The fire-retardant mechanism relies on a brominated species combined with an antimony trioxide synergist dispersed in the ABS matrix. Under the heating of a vertical burning test, hydrogen bromide liberated from the brominated additive reacts with antimony trioxide to form antimony tribromide and related volatile antimony halides that quench gas-phase free-radical reactions. Because ABS itself contributes butadiene-rich domains, the burning behaviour is not uniform; the polybutadiene phase can cause local dripping, while the styrene-acrylonitrile phase carbonises. Plaque thickness, gate location, weld lines, and pigment dispersion affect the apparent flame class. In production-scale compounding, dispersion is performed on high-shear extruders; a screw with 40:1 L/D and kneading blocks is typical for obtaining sufficient additive distribution. Poor dispersion appears as surface agglomerates and is measurable as reduced Charpy notched impact or irregular afterglow times in 1.6 mm plaques.

The tabulated windows are industrial control ranges for brominated ABS electrotechnical grades, not certified lot limits for FR-1009-C. Because public technical data for this specific material is limited, qualification must use a release certificate from the manufacturer, a UL Yellow Card if issued, and additional testing on production-thickness plaques. The melt flow rate is especially sensitive to matrix molecular weight, flame-retardant concentration, and regrind ratio. Incoming lots should be checked by ISO 1133-1:2022 using dried pellets and the same pre-test moisture history intended for moulding.
Substitution from unmodified ABS. Unmodified ABS does not require the same flame-retardant additive loading. The addition of a brominated flame-retardant package normally increases density by 0.02–0.06 g/cm³ and reduces elongation at break. Tensile yield stress may remain in a comparable range, but Charpy notched impact and heat deflection temperature are generally lower than a high-impact ABS of the same melt flow class. Snap-fit assemblies designed with general-purpose ABS data from ISO 527-2 must be revalidated because flame-retardant particles can act as stress concentrators at thin hinges and snap arms. Moulders have observed corner cracking on demoulding when the flame-retardant grade is run in tools with insufficient draft angles or non-uniform cooling; such field data is common for this class of material.
Difference from halogen-free systems. Halogen-free flame-retardant ABS grades use phosphorus- and nitrogen-based additive packages instead of the bromine-antimony synergy. They may be selected where low smoke or reduced corrosive gas evolution is a priority. The trade-off is typically higher addition levels to reach equivalent UL 94 V-0, which can lower flowability and increase moisture pickup. Brominated systems often retain better injection-moulding fluidity at the same flame class, but their decomposition products at processing temperatures above the specified window include hydrogen bromide, which can corrode mould steel and hot-runner components. Comparative tracking index values measured by IEC 60112 should be reviewed separately for each grade because ionic flame-retardant species can reduce tracking resistance in humid conditions.
Difference from FR PC/ABS. FR polycarbonate/ABS alloys provide higher heat deflection temperature and thick-wall impact than brominated ABS, but require melt temperatures generally above 260 °C and mould temperatures at 70–90 °C. FR-1009-C-class materials are processed at lower barrel temperatures, typically 190–230 °C, which suits tooling with cold runners and machines that cannot hold PC/ABS temperature stability. However, the lower thermal performance means the material is not normally suitable for enclosures exposed to continuous surface temperatures above 70 °C unless confirmed by ISO 75-2 measurements on the actual housing. Final selection should compare heat deflection temperature, notched impact, and minimum UL 94 thickness from end-product tests.
Resin dryers must be of the desiccant type, not hot-air hopper dryers only. Moisture uptake by ABS is reversible, but flame-retardant additives can create polar surface domains that retain humidity. Pellets should be dried at 80–90 °C for 3–4 h to a residual moisture below 0.05%. The dryer dew point should be below -30 °C. If the ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, the dried pellets should be conveyed in dry air and the hopper should be fitted with a sealed lid. Injection-moulding barrel zones from feed to nozzle are commonly set between 190 °C and 230 °C, with nozzle temperature 220–240 °C and mould temperature 40–70 °C. When moulding wall thickness 1.6 mm or thinner, a higher melt temperature within the stated band may be used, but total residence time above 220 °C should not exceed 10 min in a reciprocating screw press. Above 250 °C, brominated flame retardants begin to release hydrogen bromide at a rate that can produce black specks and surface splay; the mould surface may also develop deposits on unplated tool steel.
Hot-runner systems. Hot-runner temperatures above 230 °C can cause material stagnation at dead spots. Valve-gate or free-flow nozzles are preferred over torpedo tips with narrow clearances. Field reports from moulding facilities indicate that in small parts with shot weights below 50 g, screw recovery time may increase when melt temperature is reduced from 230 °C to 210 °C; the increase is approximately 10–15% on a 25 mm barrier screw. This change is not a material defect but a viscosity response that alters process stabilisation.
Application qualification. Flammability is an end-product property. A plaque classified at 1.6 mm does not guarantee the same classification after moulding a housing with ribs, bosses, weld lines, and variable local thickness. The product should be tested on plaques at 1.5 mm, 2.0 mm, and 3.0 mm after conditioning for 48 h at 23 °C and 50% relative humidity. For household appliances governed by IEC 60335-1:2020, glow-wire tests are performed on the final enclosure rather than on generic plaques; the ignition temperature under IEC 60695-2-12 and the flammability index under IEC 60695-2-11 are geometry-dependent. If repeatability is poor across a cavity-to-cavity tool, the first process parameters to audit are back-pressure, screw decompression, melt buffer, gate freeze time, and cooling time. Too low a melt buffer or too high screw decompression can allow air burning of the flame-retardant additive.
The material is expected to be supplied with a safety data sheet in accordance with REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 and a declaration for the RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II. The restricted substances include polybrominated biphenyls and certain polybrominated diphenyl ethers; a compliant brominated ABS must not contain those listed congeners. If antimony trioxide is present, the SDS Section 3 and Section 15 must state its hazard classification, and Article 33 communication duties may apply if a Candidate List substance is present above 0.1% w/w in an article. Importers should not infer regulatory compliance from a supplier-issued test report alone; a third-party analytical report under IEC 62321 is the professional reference method.
Food-contact and medical restrictions. FR-1009-C is not marketed as a food-contact grade and should not be used in direct or indirect food-contact applications unless the supplier provides a migration declaration under EU 10/2011 or FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 for the specific colour lot. It is not supplied as a biocompatible grade; for medical electrical enclosures, ISO 10993-1 evaluation is the responsibility of the device manufacturer using the final formed article. The material should be stored indoors at temperatures below 50 °C, protected from ultraviolet exposure, and sealed against moisture. Long-term storage above 30 °C in humid conditions can shift surface moisture and reduce dry-ability.
Weld lines are the primary failure sites for flame-retardant ABS. The flow front carries flame-retardant particles and may align polybutadiene domains. At a weld line, the additive-depleted central layer can expose the ABS matrix, resulting in afterglow times longer than non-weld sections. When UL 94 testing includes weld-line plaques, the specimen should be conditioned according to ISO 291 standard atmosphere and tested with the weld line perpendicular to the flame application. Such end-product test configurations are more discriminating than uniformly gated plaques. If a moulded part fails only at the weld line, the remedy is not necessarily higher flame-retardant loading; it may involve gate relocation, higher injection speed, controlled upper melt temperature, or higher mould temperature to improve polymer fusion before the flow front freezes.
Colour and additive constraints. The C suffix may designate a coloured variant. Dark colours are usually less sensitive to combustion-induced degradation because carbon black can alter char formation, while light colours may require different stabiliser and pigment systems. A change in masterbatch supplier can shift UL 94 performance even when the base resin is unchanged, because iron oxide, titanium dioxide, and organic pigments can catalyse or inhibit radical pathways during decomposition. Therefore, any colour change should be qualified at the minimum production thickness with the same pigment loading that will be used in serial production.
