Lotrene MDPE K307 is a medium-density polyethylene supplied by Qatar Petrochemical Company for extrusion and blow moulding conversion. The grade is specified to a nominal density of 0.934 g/cm³ per ISO 1183-1 and a melt flow rate of 0.7 g/10 min at 190°C under 5 kg load per ISO 1133-1. The molecular design produces slow crack growth resistance appropriate for pressure pipe and geomembrane service, while the melt strength supports parison hang time in blow moulding. The resin is not hygroscopic. Surface moisture on regrind, silo transfer, or outdoor storage should remain below 0.05 wt%; if condensation is present, predrying at 60°C for 2 h or a vented feed throat is used to prevent steam pitting. Processing temperatures above 220°C promote oxidative chain scission and should be avoided.
For gas distribution pipe, K307 is processed on a single-screw extruder with an L/D ratio of 30:1 to 36:1. The screw is a barrier design with a compression ratio of 3.0:1 and a Maddock mixing section in the metering zone. Feed throat is cooled to 30–50°C, and the first barrel zone uses a grooved feed bushing to stabilize solids conveying. The downstream barrel set points progress from 180°C to 215°C, with the adapter at 200–210°C and the pipe die at 210–215°C. Melt temperature measured at the adapter should remain within 190–220°C. Higher melt temperature reduces backpressure but shortens the oxidative induction time. A screen pack of 80/100/80 mesh is installed to trap gel particles without causing excessive backpressure; if the pack pressure exceeds 15 MPa, the screens are changed to avoid melt temperature override. Die land length is set at 2.0–2.5 times the annular die gap to reduce wall slip and melt fracture at the die exit.
Carbon black masterbatch is added at 2.0–2.5 wt% to satisfy the weathering and UV requirements of ISO 4437-1. The masterbatch carrier is a low-viscosity PE with a melt flow rate of 20–30 g/10 min to allow distributive mixing. Dispersion is assessed according to ISO 18553; a rating below 3 rejects the pipe because agglomerates act as slow crack growth initiators under internal pressure. Finished pipe is used in SDR 11 and SDR 17.6 gas distribution networks when the hydrostatic design basis under ISO 9080 supports PE80 classification. Quality control includes ISO 1167 hydrostatic pressure testing and ISO 13479 notched pipe testing at 80°C and 4.0 MPa. The end product is buried gas distribution pipe for natural gas or vapor-phase LPG at the pressure rating corresponding to the PE80 SDR table.
The main processing conflict is notch sensitivity at the pipe surface. Deep calibration vacuum below -0.45 bar can embed screen-pack debris into the melt surface and create brittle crack initiation points. Vacuum tank pressure is therefore limited to -0.2 bar to -0.4 bar, and water temperature is kept at 15–25°C to balance solidification rate and internal stress. No amine-based stabilizer or copper inhibitor is added because these additives can interfere with carbon black dispersion and produce gel-induced surface defects.
For potable water distribution, K307 is extruded on the same pipe line geometry but with a modified additive package. Light blue pipe uses a blue masterbatch at 1.5–2.0 wt%, while black pipe uses a potable-water-approved carbon black masterbatch at 2.0–2.5 wt%. The melt temperature is lowered to 190–210°C to reduce organoleptic degradation products. Vacuum sizing and spray cooling are controlled to produce a uniform wall thickness across diameters from 32 mm to 630 mm. Compliance is documented against ISO 4427-2, EN 12201-2, AS/NZS 4130, NSF/ANSI 61, and FDA 21 CFR 177.1520. The pressure class of the finished pipe is derived from the hydrostatic strength curve, not from the SDR alone. End products are buried water mains, service pipes, and rural water lines.
| Requirement | Standard | Test condition / acceptance |
|---|---|---|
| Melt flow rate | ISO 1133-1 | 190°C, 5 kg, 0.7 g/10 min nominal |
| Density | ISO 1183-1 | 0.934 g/cm³ |
| Long-term hydrostatic strength | ISO 9080 | PE80 classification where applicable |
| Slow crack growth | ISO 13479 | No failure at 80°C, 4.0 MPa, 165 h |
| Potable water contact | NSF/ANSI 61 | Leachate below regulatory thresholds |
| FDA food contact | 21 CFR 177.1520 | Olefin polymer, no monomers above extraction limits |
Long-term hydrostatic testing at 20°C and 80°C under ISO 9080 establishes the design stress. Post-extraction organoleptic testing is required for potable water contact when using regrind. The maximum regrind content is 20 wt%, limited by the need to maintain slow crack growth resistance and melt flow stability. Regrind particle size is kept below 6 mm screen aperture to avoid feed bridging. The pipe is unsuitable for continuous service above 40°C at full pressure rating without derating factors.
Geomembrane sheet extrusion from K307 uses a flat die with a die gap of 0.8–1.2 mm and a sheet thickness of 1.5–3.0 mm. The resin is processed on a single-screw extruder with an L/D ratio of 30:1 and a barrier screw. Barrel temperatures range from 185°C to 220°C, with the flexible lip die set at 215–220°C. Carbon black masterbatch is added at 2.0–3.0 wt%. When the loading exceeds 2.5 wt%, dispersion quality becomes the controlling variable: undispersed carbon black lowers elongation at break and increases the likelihood of stress cracking under leachate exposure. A cavity transfer mixer or a Maddock mixing section is therefore required, and dispersion is checked to ISO 18553 with an acceptance rating of ≤3. The chill roll stack is operated at 60–90°C to control crystallinity and curl; lower roll temperatures produce an amorphous skin layer with high crack resistance but may cause sheet bowing. The finished geomembrane is tested to GRI-GM13 and ASTM D5397 for puncture, tear, tensile, and oxidative induction time measured by ASTM D3895 at 200°C. Seams are produced by hot wedge welding and extrusion welding, with peel and shear tests per ASTM D6392. The end product is used in landfill liners, leachate ponds, and secondary containment structures.
Carbon black loading above 3.0 wt% is not recommended for primary landfill liners without full revalidation because the melt viscosity increase can produce higher backpressure and lower output. Sheet thickness variation across the die should be kept within ±5%; automatic die bolt adjustment is used on lines above 2 m width. A die bolt closure of more than 0.4 mm from the initial gap setting indicates excessive melt elasticity and requires a reduction in takeoff speed or melt temperature. Published data for K307 in large-width geomembrane lines is limited; production validation on the specific line is required to confirm the oxidative induction time after welding.
In cable duct and corrugated conduit lines, the K307 melt is processed in a lower melt temperature window of 195–215°C to maintain corrugation block engagement. A silicone-based processing aid is dosed at 0.3–0.8 wt% to suppress melt fracture at corrugator takeoff speeds above 12 m/min. A UV stabilizer masterbatch is added at 1.5–2.5 wt% for above-ground sections; buried duct uses carbon black at 2.0–2.5 wt%. The extruder is typically a grooved-feed single-screw with L/D of 30:1 and a spiral mandrel die. The corrugator mold blocks are maintained at 60–90°C. Finished ducts are tested for ring stiffness and impact resistance per IEC 61386-1 and EN 61386-24. End products are buried fiber optic cable ducts, microduct bundles, and low-voltage cable conduits.
The main process limitation is fold cracking in the corrugation valleys. If the mold vacuum is too deep or the melt temperature is below 195°C, the material freezes before full block replication and forms microcracks. Takeoff speed and air pressure are balanced to maintain a wall thickness in the corrugation root of at least 0.6 mm for standard ducts.
Extrusion blow moulding of K307 is performed on accumulator-head machines with parison programming. Melt temperature at the die is held at 190–210°C. The parison die gap is programmed from 0.2 mm to 2.0 mm to compensate for diameter swell and wall thinning at pinch-off zones. Blow pressure is 0.6–0.8 MPa, and mold temperature is kept at 10–20°C to reduce cycle time without inducing excessive frozen-in stress. For automotive fuel tanks, K307 is used in a coextruded structure with an EVOH barrier layer and maleic anhydride grafted tie layers. The inner and outer layers may contain up to 30 wt% regrind of the same structure, subject to drop impact and permeation validation. The finished tank is tested for environmental stress crack resistance per ASTM D1693, condition B, and for high-speed puncture impact per ASTM D3763. Fuel permeation is validated under SAE J1737 or customer-specific CARB/EPA protocols.
K307 is not suitable for monolayer fuel tanks that must meet evaporative emission limits without an EVOH barrier. Published permeation data for K307 in multilayer fuel tank structures is limited; production validation on the specific coextrusion die is required. The accumulator head pressure should not exceed 25 MPa to avoid shear heating and parison surface defects. Parison hang time is stable because the melt flow rate of 0.7 g/10 min provides sufficient melt strength; however, ambient air currents above 2 m/s across the parison cause wall thickness variation and pinch-off weld weakness.
Industrial sheet lines running K307 at 2.0–5.0 mm thickness add no filler beyond stabilizer masterbatch. The sheet is extruded through a flat die onto a three-roll stack. Roll temperatures are set at 80–100°C for glossy surfaces and 60–70°C for matte surfaces; the difference between top and bottom roll temperature is kept below 10°C to prevent curl. The sheet is cut into blanks and thermoformed or welded into chemical containment trays, acid dip tanks, and secondary containment liners. Fabrication welding follows DVS 2207-1, with hot gas welding temperatures of 220–240°C and a welding speed of 0.1–0.3 m/min for 4 mm sheet. Continuous service temperature is limited to 60°C with strong oxidizing chemicals; above this threshold, stress cracking accelerates and the design life is reduced. The end product is not intended for direct contact with strong oxidizing acids at temperatures above 40°C without chemical resistance testing under ISO/TR 10358.
