    Application of QAPCO HDPE HHM5502BN

    Why 20 L to 60 L UN-certified jerrycans demand ESCR above 1,000 h in agrochemical service

In monolayer UN-certified jerrycan production, HDPE HHM5502BN is processed on accumulator-head extrusion blow-moulding lines with screw diameters of 60 mm to 90 mm and L/D ratios of 24:1 to 30:1. The resin is characterised by a density of 0.955 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1:2019 and a high-load melt index of 30–40 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 21.6 kg, which provides sufficient parison melt strength for 20 L to 60 L containers without excessive extruder torque. The formulation is maintained at 100 phr resin, with blue phthalocyanine masterbatch at 1.5–2.5 wt%, hindered phenolic primary antioxidant at 0.2–0.5 phr, phosphite secondary antioxidant at 0.1–0.3 phr, hindered amine light stabiliser at 0.2–0.5 phr, and zinc stearate at 0.05–0.1 phr; total non-resin components are held below 3.5 wt% because higher masterbatch loadings depress ASTM D1693-15 Condition B, 100% Igepal CO-630 ESCR below the 1,000 h requirement observed for agricultural emulsifiable concentrates and chlorinated solvent service. Melt temperature is controlled at 190–210°C, mould water temperature at 10–15°C, and blow air pressure at 0.6–0.8 MPa. The parison programme expands the die gap from 3 mm to 12 mm during the initial 30% of parison drop to counter gravity-induced drawdown; on production-scale shuttle machines, shot-to-shot weight variation is held to ±1.5% for a 20 L container. Pinch-off weld zones are trimmed with a hot knife at 180–230°C to avoid microcrack initiation. UN Model Regulations 23rd revised edition, Chapter 6.1 tests are applied, including drop at 6.1.5.3, leakproofness at 6.1.5.4, hydraulic pressure at 6.1.5.5, and stacking at 6.1.5.6. Terminal types include 20 L, 25 L, 30 L and 60 L jerrycans carrying UN marking 3H1/Y/... for packing groups II and III, used for crop protection formulations, industrial solvent and detergent intermediates.

Automotive windshield washer reservoirs and unpressurised coolant recovery bottles

Blow-moulded automotive reservoirs produced from HHM5502BN are validated against ISO 16750-3:2012 for underhood temperature and humidity cycling, with a typical continuous-use wall temperature ceiling of 70°C and short excursion tolerance up to 85°C at the mounting bosses. The compound uses 100 phr HDPE, carbon black masterbatch at 2.0–3.0 wt% for UV screening and heat aging resistance, a heat-stabiliser package at 0.3–0.5 phr, and process aid at 0.1–0.2 phr; no impact modifier is added because the high-molecular-weight HDPE already provides Charpy notched impact values above 6 kJ/m² under ISO 179-1/1eA at 23°C. Production is carried out on accumulator-head machines with melt temperature 190–215°C, mould temperature 8–12°C, and blow air pressure 0.7–0.9 MPa; cycle times range from 50 s to 80 s for 2 L to 5 L reservoirs. The main in-line failure mode is leakage at the injection-moulded hose barb insert, so ultrasonic welding of the fitting is set to amplitude of 20–30 µm and a frequency of 20 kHz with a post-weld quench to reduce crystallinity in the joint. Finished product types include 2.0 L, 3.0 L and 5.0 L windshield washer reservoirs and unpressurised coolant recovery bottles in the 0.5–2.0 L range; these components are not validated for pressurised cooling systems, where high-molecular-weight HDPE would exceed the heat deflection temperature boundary at 0.45 MPa.

Household and industrial cleaning product bottles under oxidative bleach exposure

Multi-cavity shuttle blow moulding of household and industrial cleaning product bottles utilises HHM5502BN at 100 phr, titanium dioxide masterbatch at 1.2–2.0 wt%, zinc stearate at 0.05–0.2 phr, and a low-polarity processing aid at 0.1–0.2 phr to reduce melt fracture in continuous extrusion with die temperatures of 170–190°C. The ESCR threshold for sodium hypochlorite, quaternary ammonium disinfectants and linear alkylbenzene sulfonate detergents is referenced to ASTM D1693-15 Condition A, 100% Igepal CO-630, where a failure time below 300 h is considered inadequate for retail bleach packaging. Mould water is held at 8–12°C and blow air at 0.5–0.8 MPa on shuttle machines with 1+1 or 2+2 cavity layouts; cycle time for a 1 L bottle ranges from 20 s to 45 s depending on handle design. Non-hazardous retail formulations are not subject to UN packaging approval, but industrial concentrates classified as dangerous goods require 3H1 jerrycan testing according to the transport mode. Regulatory compliance is anchored to REACH (EC) No 1907/2006 for substance restrictions and, for food-contact adjacent products, to EU 10/2011. Terminal container types include 250 mL, 500 mL, 750 mL, 1 L, 2 L and 5 L bottles for bleach, disinfectants, laundry detergents, hard-surface cleaners, and industrial degreasers.

When cosmetic-grade HDPE replacement demands neck calibration below ±0.5 mm

In personal care and cosmetics packaging, the critical quality parameter is not ESCR but the dimensional consistency of the bottle neck and the sealing surface after post-mould shrinkage. HHM5502BN is run at 100 phr with a color masterbatch at 0.5–2.0 wt%, slip additive at 0.05–0.15 phr, and an antistat at 0.05–0.1 phr for downstream high-speed filling lines. The blow-pin neck ring is cooled to 5–10°C while the mould body is held at 10–15°C to freeze the calibrated neck before body crystallization proceeds; that difference in cooling rates maintains neck inner diameter tolerance within ±0.5 mm and reduces cap leakage torque failures below 0.3% in production audits. Melt temperature is set at 180–205°C, blow air at 0.6–0.8 MPa, and cycle time for a 500 mL bottle on a single-station shuttle is between 18 s and 35 s. Cosmetic packaging outputs are governed by Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 for product-contact compatibility and, where the same grade is used for food-contact samples, by FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c) 3.1 and 3.2 and EU 10/2011. Published data for exact neck-ring calibration wear rates on HHM5502BN is limited; the tolerance is therefore verified by production audit rather than by a single standard. The terminal formats include 100 mL to 1,000 mL shampoo, conditioner, body wash and hand soap bottles, as well as trigger-spray containers for diluted cosmetic concentrates.

Intermediate bulk container inner liners and 100-point parison control on accumulator heads

For 1,000 L single-wall intermediate bulk container inner bottles, HDPE HHM5502BN is processed at 100 phr with a UV stabiliser masterbatch at 0.3–0.6 wt%, antioxidant at 0.2–0.5 phr, and no talc or calcium carbonate filler because inorganic fillers increase density and reduce the slow crack growth resistance required for vertical side-wall hydrostatic loading. The accumulator-head blow-moulding line uses screw diameters from 90 mm to 150 mm, L/D 24:1 to 30:1, total parison shot weight of 8 kg to 12 kg, and extruder output of 300–600 kg/h. Parison programming with 100-point axial wall-thickness control is used to maintain a minimum wall thickness of 2.5–3.5 mm at the top and bottom corners; blow air pressure is 0.6–0.8 MPa, and mould temperature is kept at 10–18°C. After demoulding, wall-thickness distribution is measured by ultrasonic gauge, and the vessel is subjected to a drop test from 1.9 m at -18°C for UN 31A/Y qualification if hazardous liquids are to be shipped; non-hazardous service uses ISO 16106:2006 and ASTM D1998-15 as the primary standards. Terminal products include 1,000 L IBC inner bottles for non-hazardous aqueous emulsions, water-treatment polymers, and non-oxidising acids, as well as 120 L and 220 L blow-moulded storage tanks for industrial liquid dispensing.

    Food-contact bulk containers under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c) 3.1 and 3.2

Cold-fill food-contact containers utilise HHM5502BN at 100 phr, with the additive package restricted to a food-grade antioxidant at 0.1–0.2 phr and no colour masterbatch when natural unpigmented finished goods are required; if white or coloured containers are specified, the masterbatch carrier and pigments must be individually listed under EU 10/2011 and FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c) 3.1 and 3.2. Extrusion blow moulding is performed on long-stroke machines at melt temperatures of 180–205°C, parison blow air of 0.6–0.8 MPa, and mould water temperature of 10–15°C; the screw and barrel are purged with a food-grade HDPE before production to avoid carryover of non-food additives. The critical regulatory boundary is hot-fill: this high-density polyethylene is limited to continuous content temperatures below 60°C, and for fatty foods with free oil above 5% migration testing under EU 10/2011 should be performed because lipophilic contact can accelerate additive migration kinetics. Terminal types include 1 L to 20 L containers for liquid confectionery sauces, syrups, vinegar, edible oil, and dry food ingredients, with cold-fill or ambient-fill lines only.

Agricultural adjuvant and seed treatment packaging for outdoor UV service

Agricultural adjuvant and seed-treatment packaging produced from HHM5502BN requires both ESCR and resistance to outdoor storage under UV exposure. The compound is 100 phr HDPE, with a UV weathering package at 0.3–0.6 phr, hindered phenol antioxidant at 0.2–0.5 phr, and a heavily pigmented high-opacity masterbatch at 1.5–3.0 wt% to protect light-sensitive adjuvants. The production route is accumulator-head blow moulding with melt temperatures of 190–210°C, mould temperature 12–18°C, and blow air pressure 0.6–0.8 MPa; containers are leak-tested with 0.03 MPa air under water and dried with ionised air to below 10% internal surface moisture before filling. Packaging compliance follows the same UN Chapter 6.1 sequence for dangerous goods as industrial jerrycans, and the finished 5 L, 10 L and 20 L containers are used for seed treatments, surfactants, and water-dispersible granule formulations.
