    Application of Polymer Compounders ASA

ASA Capstock in Coextruded PVC-U Window Profiles

The coextruded ASA capstock on PVC-U window profiles acts as a weatherable surface stratum over a PVC-U substrate of 2.0–3.0 mm. The capstock layer is maintained at 100–250 µm, corresponding to 5–12 wt% of the total profile wall. Capstock melt is processed at 220–240 °C through a satellite single-screw extruder with a 30:1 L/D ratio, while the PVC-U substrate is processed in a counter-rotating twin-screw extruder at 185–195 °C. The two melt streams are combined in a dual-manifold die with a common land length of 10–15 mm; die-lip temperature is trimmed to 210–225 °C. A melt-temperature differential above 35 °C between the layers produces interfacial delamination at profile corners. Capstock layer thickness below 80 µm permits premature UV transmission into the PVC substrate, while thickness above 250 µm intensifies corner stress and impact crack initiation. Melt volume rate is controlled to 8–15 cm³/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C and 10 kg load to match the PVC substrate viscosity. A melt pump upstream of the die dampens throughput variation to ±0.5%. The stabiliser package excludes amine-based additives because they migrate into the acrylic ester phase and reduce interlayer adhesion. Dimensional profile assessment follows EN 12608-1:2016; weathering retention is validated under ISO 4892-2:2013 Cycle 1 with xenon-arc exposure at 2,000 h. Terminal product types include coextruded window lineals, door outer frames, and exterior cladding profiles.

For unpainted exterior cowl vent grilles and side mirror housings, impact-modified ASA compounds are dried in desiccant dryers at 80 °C for 4 h with a supply dew point below −30 °C before injection moulding; residual moisture above 0.05% hydrolyses the acrylate ester impact-modifier phase during plastication and produces surface splay. The compound contains acrylic ester impact modifier at 10–20 wt%, a hindered amine light stabiliser package at 0.3–0.8 wt%, and a weatherable pigment concentrate at 2–4 wt%; high-gloss black exterior grades add carbon black at 0.3–0.6 wt% to stabilise surface appearance. Component validation follows SAE J2527:2017 or ISO 4892-2:2013 with radiometric exposures between 2,000 kJ/m² and 2,500 kJ/m² at 340 nm. Post-exposure assessment uses ISO 2813 gloss retention and ISO 11664-4 colour difference; OEM approval criteria commonly require ΔE ≤ 3.0 and retained 60° gloss ≥ 70%. Moulding on 1,800–2,500 kN clamp-force injection machines uses a melt temperature of 240–260 °C and a mould-wall temperature of 60–80 °C. Sequential valve gating moves knit lines away from leading edges where stone impact stress concentrates during vehicle service. Finished part types include mirror housings, cowl vent grilles, and grille assemblies.

When Does Thin-Wall ASA Flame Retardance Destabilise Gate-Freeze Time in Outdoor Enclosures?

Outdoor junction boxes moulded from unfilled ASA are limited to UL 94 HB; when UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm is demanded, a halogen-free aryl phosphate flame retardant is added at 12–18 wt% and polytetrafluoroethylene anti-drip at 0.3–0.5 wt%. This additive package raises melt viscosity and reduces flow length, causing gate-freeze instability in thin-wall sections. Rib intersections at 1.2 mm wall thickness freeze before packing, producing sink-mark depth above 0.02 mm. Moulding trials on 1,200 kN electric injection machines with 25 mm barrier screws set melt temperature at 230–250 °C, mould-wall temperature at 50–70 °C, and holding pressure at 60–80 MPa. Hot runner manifold temperature is held at 240 °C, and screw recovery time is limited below 30 s to avoid excessive residence time for the phosphorus-based additive package. Compliance routes include IEC 60529 IP65 after machining and UL 746C F1 outdoor suitability; flexural modulus is checked under ISO 178:2019. Terminal finished products are IP-rated junction boxes, switchgear covers, and terminal enclosures.

In garden power tool housings, substitution of ASA/PBT blends for metal leg decks begins with dry blending of ASA/PBT pellets at 70/30 to 50/50 by weight; glass fibre reinforcement is added at 15–20 wt% when flexural modulus above 4,000 MPa is required. The PBT phase requires pre-drying at 120 °C for 4 h to a dew point below −30 °C; insufficient drying causes ester exchange and viscosity loss at melt temperatures above 250 °C. Injection moulding uses sequential valve gating to reduce weld-line visibility on large deck surfaces; melt temperature is held at 250–270 °C and mould temperature at 80–100 °C. Published peel-strength data for ASA/PBT overmoulded onto glass-filled polyamide substrates is limited; converter trials remain necessary before replacing metal leg decks. Compliance for outdoor exposure follows ISO 4892-2:2013, ASTM D256 notched Izod, and ISO 179-1 Charpy impact. Finished part types include lawn mower top decks, blower shrouds, and hedge trimmer housings.

When Chloramine-Resistant ASA Sheet Replaces Copolyester in Vacuum-Formed Spa Shells

Chloramine attack in thermoformed spa shells propagates through localised surface crazing when copolyester skins are exposed to water containing 3.0–5.0 mg/L total chlorine; ASA sheet formulations with acrylic ester modifier at 8–15 wt% and rutile titanium dioxide at 2–5 wt% provide a craze-resistant surface. Sheet extrusion on 90 mm single-screw lines with 30:1 L/D uses melt temperatures of 220–240 °C, polished roll temperatures of 80–95 °C, and thickness tolerance of ±0.10 mm on a 4.0 mm sheet. Vacuum forming requires sheet surface temperature of 155–170 °C, mould temperature of 55–70 °C, and draw ratios below 2.0:1 to avoid corner thinning below 1.8 mm. Compliance is assessed under ISO 4892-2:2013 and ISO 22088-3:2006 bent-strip environmental stress-crack resistance. Finished product types include spa shells, whirlpool bath decks, and pool step panels.

Injection Moulding of High-Gloss ASA for Small Appliance Housings

Because yellowing resistance under indoor UV exposure drives material selection, high-gloss small appliance housings are injection moulded from ASA at melt temperatures of 230–250 °C and mould temperatures of 60–80 °C; a HALS/UV absorber package is added at 0.2–0.5 wt% to delay photoyellowing. Melt temperature excursions above 260 °C reduce surface gloss, and minimum residence time in the barrel is maintained below 5 min to avoid gel particle formation in the hot runner. Compliance is documented under IEC 60335-1 and melt flow stability under ISO 1133-1:2022. Finished product types include housing shells for air purifiers, vacuum cleaners, and benchtop appliances.
