Application of Petroquimica Triunfo Trithene MDPE TR-9360

For agricultural chemical storage tanks from 500 L to 10,000 L, Petroquimica Triunfo Trithene TR-9360 is rotomoulded as a medium-density polyethylene supplied as rotomoulding powder with density in the 0.932–0.938 g/cm³ range under ASTM D1505 and melt index in the 5–7 g/10 min range under ASTM D1238 (190°C, 2.16 kg). Single-wall vessels are produced with wall thicknesses of 5 mm to 12 mm in fabricated carbon steel or stainless steel mould cavities mounted on biaxial carousel machines with 3.0 m to 4.0 m swing diameters. Oven air temperature is set between 280°C and 320°C, while peak internal air temperature is held at 190°C to 210°C; below 185°C incomplete particle coalescence produces pinholes at sharp internal corners and threaded insert bosses, and above 215°C oxidative degradation causes visible yellowing and a measurable loss in dart impact strength under ASTM D3763. Mould rotation ratios of 4:1 to 8:1 are used depending on part aspect ratio. Environmental stress crack resistance is the controlling material property for tanks handling emulsifiable concentrates and dilute acids; the acceptance criterion is normally a minimum of 1,000 h without failure under ASTM D1693 Condition B (10% Igepal CO-630, 50°C). Published ESCR data for TR-9360 in specific agrochemical formulations is limited, and pre-qualification immersion testing per ASTM D543 is therefore performed on moulded plaques before production release. Warpage in large flat sidewalls is suppressed by forced-air cooling to 80°C before water mist cooling and by limiting water quench differential between inner and outer surfaces to less than 15°C.

What Peak Internal Air Temperature Suppresses Voids in Diesel Fuel Tank Rotomoulding?

On shuttle-style rotational moulding machines with swing diameters up to 3.5 m, TR-9360 is formed into off-highway auxiliary diesel reservoirs and compact generator fuel tanks as single-piece shells with wall sections from 4 mm to 8 mm. The powder is introduced into aluminium moulds fitted with brass or stainless steel moulded-in insert systems; thread bosses are preheated to 120°C to 150°C before charging to reduce shrink voids around metallic inserts. The required peak internal air temperature window is 200°C to 212°C, verified by an internal air thermocouple data logger rotating with the mould. At peak internal air temperature below 195°C, unfused particles remain in the vicinity of baffles and around boss roots; above 218°C, inner wall oxidation reduces elongation at break when tested per ISO 527-2 at 50 mm/min. Fuel contact requires that the moulded part pass a 48 h diesel immersion test at 40°C with no visible cracking and no mass change greater than 0.2%. Low-temperature puncture resistance under ASTM D3763 at -40°C is specification-dependent, and OEM validation on 6 mm plaques is required because published data for this specific configuration is limited. Hydrocarbon permeation is a boundary condition: unmodified MDPE is acceptable for diesel with low vapor pressure, whereas gasoline or ethanol-blended fuels may require fluorination or a barrier layer to meet EPA 40 CFR Part 1054 evaporative emission limits. Mould cooling to 60°C before demoulding is maintained, and cylindrical tank bodies are fixtured during cooling to prevent ellipticity.

In point-of-entry water treatment, filter housings and pressure vessel bodies are rotomoulded with TR-9360 in wall sections between 6 mm and 12 mm. The grade is processed at a peak internal air temperature of 195°C to 205°C with a slow air cooling step to 90°C to reduce residual stress before machining of threaded ports and o-ring grooves. Potable water contact compliance is not automatic for MDPE; it requires lot-specific certification under NSF/ANSI/CAN 61. If the resin lot is not listed, extraction testing per NSF/ANSI/CAN 600 is required on finished parts before installation. Long-term hydrostatic performance is evaluated at 1.5× rated working pressure for 24 h, with creep modulus measured under ISO 899-2 considering the 10-year design life of pressure housings. MDPE exhibits lower creep rupture strength than high-density polyethylene pressure pipe resins; therefore pressure ratings above 0.6 MPa at 23°C are not recommended without additional wall reinforcement. Threaded brass inserts are preheated to 140°C to 160°C and installed with a 0.5 mm radial interference to maintain sealability after thermal cycling. Stress cracking resistance in chlorinated water is evaluated under ASTM D1693 with 10% Igepal at 50°C, and supplemental testing in 5 ppm free chlorine at 60°C for 500 h is common where oxidative resistance must be demonstrated.

Double-Wall Bunded Chemical Containment Moulding and Interlayer Fusion Thermodynamics

In secondary containment bunds and double-wall tank shells for corrosive liquid storage, TR-9360 is processed as both the inner vessel material and the outer containment barrier. Wall thickness for each shell is typically 5 mm to 10 mm, with an interstitial space of 25 mm to 50 mm. The outer shell is rotomoulded first, then the inner shell is either moulded separately and mechanically joined, or produced as a foam-filled double-wall structure using a drop-box charge inserted after the first layer reaches a gel state. Interlayer fusion is controlled by surface temperature: the first layer must remain above 160°C when the second charge contacts it, otherwise interlaminar fusion remains incomplete and delamination occurs during thermal cycling. After moulding, polyurethane foam with density 40 kg/m³ to 60 kg/m³ is injected into the annulus; exotherm from 25 mm of foam can raise the inner wall temperature above 80°C, causing post-mould shrinkage of 1.2% to 1.8% in unsupported flat areas. Hydrostatic testing is performed per ASTM D1998 at 1.25× design capacity, and visual inspection follows EN 13341 for above-ground thermoplastic tanks. The upper service temperature for continuous contact with caustic solutions is limited to 40°C at 20% concentration; immersion testing per ASTM D543 for 30 days at 60°C is used to detect environmental stress cracking before field deployment. Because TR-9360 is a medium-density grade, its flexural modulus under ASTM D790 is lower than that of HDPE rotomoulding grades, requiring closer rib spacing of 300 mm to 500 mm on flat tank walls to limit deflection to 2% of span.

When corrosive solid decontamination trays and tote boxes are required for pharmaceutical and agrochemical process areas, TR-9360 is rotomoulded as single-wall parts with draft angles of 3° to 5° and nominal wall thicknesses of 4 mm to 6 mm. The powder is dry-blended with carbon black or color concentrates in a high-intensity mixer at 1,200 rpm for 60 s to 90 s before charging; excess mixing raises static charge and produces non-uniform wall thickness due to powder segregation. The mould is rotated at 6 rpm primary and 1.2 rpm secondary on a shuttle machine, giving a 5:1 ratio, and oven temperature is set at 300°C. Mould release is initiated only after internal air temperature drops below 70°C to prevent bottom sag and edge curl. Flat tray bottoms are fixtured during cooling with aluminium plates held at 20°C to 25°C; unrestrained cooling produces corner warpage greater than 3 mm per 500 mm of diagonal span. Mechanical acceptance is based on ASTM D638 tensile yield strength and ISO 178 flexural modulus measured on cut specimens from the tray bottom, while chemical exposure is qualified by ASTM D543 immersion in 10% sodium hypochlorite and 30% sulfuric acid for 7 days. For designs with moulded-in fork pockets, the pocket root radius must be at least 8 mm to avoid stress concentration and impact failure under ASTM D3763 at 23°C.

When UV-Stabilized Dry Blends Feed Outdoor Recreational Components

To produce outdoor playground panels, kayak storage hatches, and recreational enclosure shells, TR-9360 is dry-blended with hindered amine light stabilizers and UV absorbers. The blend is prepared in a vertical high-intensity mixer at 1,400 rpm for 90 s to 120 s; stabilizer loadings of 0.3% to 0.6% by weight are typical, but the exact package must be selected for the intended UV exposure class. Weathering qualification is performed under ASTM G154 Cycle 1 (340 nm UVA-340 lamps, 8 h UV at 60°C, 4 h condensation at 50°C) for 2,000 h, with acceptance criteria of not less than 70% retention of tensile elongation at break when tested per ISO 527-2. Color change is measured under ASTM D2244; a ΔE greater than 3.0 after 2,000 h is considered a visual defect in matched-color outdoor assemblies. Low-temperature impact is evaluated at -20°C using ASTM D3763 on 6 mm plaques; the ductile-to-brittle transition of MDPE rotomoulding grades is typically between -40°C and -20°C, so parts used in colder climates require a minimum wall thickness of 6 mm and generous corner radii of at least 12 mm. Mould surface finish is specified as VDI 24 to 30 on aluminium tools to reduce gloss variation and to hide flow lines produced by pigment dry blending. Because UV stabilizers can migrate to the part surface during slow cooling, cooling rate after demoulding is controlled to 5°C/min until the part reaches 50°C.
