Application of Petroquimica Triunfo Trithene MDPE TE 8088

For buried natural gas distribution laterals and service pipes, MDPE TE 8088 is processed into solid-wall pipe conforming to ISO 4437-2:2014 and EN 1555-2:2021. Pipe producers dry-blend 94.5–97.0 wt% TE 8088 with 2.0–2.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch, 0.3–0.8 wt% stabilizer masterbatch, and 0.2–0.5 wt% processing aid masterbatch. The carbon black concentration in the extruded pipe wall is maintained between 2.0% and 2.5% by mass when measured to ISO 6964. Compound density is verified to ISO 1183-1:2019 at 0.938–0.942 g/cm³. Melt flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 190 °C and 5 kg is maintained between 0.2 g/10 min and 1.0 g/10 min to limit parison sag in large-diameter pipe. On a 75 mm grooved-feed single-screw extruder with 33:1 L/D, barrel set points are 185–210 °C, the die head is held at 205–215 °C, and melt pressure upstream of the screen pack is 280–320 bar. Output for SDR 11 63 mm pipe is typically 310–360 kg/h at screw speed 85–90 min⁻¹. Vacuum calibration is applied at −0.4 bar to −0.6 bar with water at 15–20 °C. The pipe is cut only after the outer wall temperature falls below 45 °C. Hydrostatic acceptance testing follows ISO 1167-1:2006 at 20 °C for 100 h, 80 °C for 165 h, and 80 °C for 1000 h; no ductile or brittle failure is permitted before the specified test hours. The finished solid-wall pipe is used for buried natural gas distribution, LPG vapour laterals, and renewable natural gas grid injection laterals under SDR ratings selected according to ISO 4437-2 design coefficients.

Abnormal weather exposure before extrusion requires closed-loop desiccant drying at 70–80 °C for 2–4 h when surface moisture exceeds 0.05% by Karl Fischer titration. Regrind from start-up purges is limited to 10 wt% and only from unpigmented, carbon-black-free pipe because carbon black agglomerates reduce slow crack growth resistance. The grade should not be combined with uncrosslinked polypropylene or ionomer scrap because phase incompatibility lowers slow crack growth resistance below the 8.0 MPa MRS requirement under ISO 12162:2009. A common production failure mode on grooved-feed lines is melt fracture at the die exit when head pressure falls below 180 bar; the remedy is to reduce screen pack mesh from 100 to 60 or to raise the head zone by 5 °C. Internal voids appear if calibration vacuum exceeds −0.6 bar or if melt temperature surpasses 230 °C because moisture and volatiles flash at the calibration sleeve.

Can a 1.5 mm MDPE Geomembrane Pass SP-NCTL at 50°C Beyond 400 Hours?

Because flat-die geomembrane lines expose the melt to longer barrel residence times, TE 8088 is compounded with 2.0–2.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch and 0.2–0.5 wt% high-temperature antioxidant package before chilled-roll calendering. The formulation is dispersed on a 120 mm single-screw extruder with 30:1 L/D and Maddock mixing section. Die width ranges from 2.2 m to 3.0 m, die gap is set to 1.5–2.0 mm, and melt temperature is controlled at 220–240 °C. The roll stack temperature is maintained at 70–90 °C to prevent differential shrinkage. Sheet thickness is measured continuously by beta gauge at 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm, 2.0 mm, and 3.0 mm target values. Textured surfaces are produced either by nitrogen embossing of the top roll or by coextruding a foamable skin layer, with asperity height verified to 0.4–0.8 mm for slope stability.

Seam welding on site uses hot-wedge systems at 380–420 °C with travel speed 1.5–2.0 m/min. Peel and shear coupons are tested to ASTM D6392-12. The finished geomembrane is installed as landfill basal liner, mining heap leach pad liner, and secondary containment under GRI-GM13 specifications. A process conflict arises if the die lip opens beyond 2.0 mm: sheet edge tear becomes recurrent because melt strength at 235 °C is insufficient for draw ratios above 1.3:1. When line speed exceeds 8 m/min, haze and microvoids appear in the carbon black-rich layer unless the extruder is fitted with a gear pump and screen changer sized for 120 mesh. Field failures on mining pads concentrate at weld seams because oxidative degradation during sheet extrusion reduces long-term weld strength; the extruder is therefore run with a nitrogen blanket on the hopper and feed throat, and the HP-OIT value is kept above 400 min under ASTM D5885-06.

Extrusion blow molding of UN-rated 20–30 L jerry cans from TE 8088 normally runs on accumulator-head or continuous shuttle machines with extruder L/D ratios between 24:1 and 30:1. The melt temperature is held at 190–215 °C, the diverging die gap is set at 1.5–3.0 mm, and the parison programmer controls wall thickness between 2.0 mm and 4.5 mm. Blow pressure is 0.8–1.0 MPa, mold clamp force is 120–160 t for four-cavity tooling, and mold cooling water is 10–15 °C. The molded containers are used for agricultural pesticide formulations, industrial detergent concentrates, and oilfield chemical additives. Qualification tests include the UN drop test at 1.2 m and −18 °C for packing group II liquids, hydraulic pressure at 100 kPa for 30 min, and environmental stress cracking resistance under ASTM D1693-15 condition B in 100% Igepal CO-630 at 50 °C. A typical acceptance threshold is no crack after 300 h for aggressive liquid chemical packaging.

Batch-to-batch variance in melt flow rate alters parison sag and pinch weld thickness. If MFR drifts above 1.0 g/10 min at 190 °C/5 kg, parison length shortens by 5–8% on accumulator-head machines, producing thin bottom weld corners. Regrind from trimmed flash is limited to 15–20 wt% because higher fractions reduce ESCR and cause surface streaking on dark-green and black containers. The grade should not be dry blended with stearate-based external lubricants above 0.2 wt% because migration to the weld pinch zone reduces weld burst strength. When the container is specified for oxidizing liquids, the moulder may add a fluorination barrier treatment; this operation must occur after the part has cooled below 35 °C to avoid warpage.

When Blown Film Lines Blend 15–25 wt% TE 8088 into LDPE for Dart Impact and Puncture Resistance

In three-layer coextruded heavy-duty sack lines, TE 8088 is dry-blended into the core layer at 15–25 wt% with a fractional-melt LDPE film resin and 2–3 wt% processing masterbatch. The die diameter is 250–450 mm, the blow-up ratio is controlled between 2.2:1 and 3.0:1, and the frost line height is held at 6–8 die diameters. Melt temperatures are 180–210 °C across the barrel, adapter, and die; output is 180–250 kg/h on 75–90 mm extruders. The resulting film is converted into 25–50 kg heavy-duty sacks, construction aggregate bags, FIBC liners, and mineral/resin masterbatch packaging. Line trials substituting 20 wt% TE 8088 for LDPE typically increase ASTM D1709-16a dart drop by 25–40% and decrease ASTM D1922-09 Elmendorf tear in the machine direction by 10–15%. Tensile elongation at break is measured to ASTM D882-12 and is maintained above 400% in the machine direction. The film should not be run at blow-up ratios above 3.0:1 because bubble instability and gauge variation exceed ±8% on high-stalk lines.

Carbon Black Loading Limits in MDPE Telecom Duct Sheathing

Outside plant telecom duct and low-voltage cable outer sheath compounds use TE 8088 at 94.0–96.0 wt% with 2.0–2.6 wt% carbon black masterbatch and 0.3–0.5 wt% antioxidant/metal deactivator package. Extrusion runs on 90–120 mm single-screw crosshead lines with melt filtration through 80–120 mesh screens. Melt temperature is 200–230 °C, the drawdown ratio is kept at 2:1–3:1, and the cooling trough water is 25–40 °C. The finished sheath is used for underground telecom conduits, fiber optic microducts, and low-voltage power cable jackets. Density and tensile properties are verified to ASTM D1248-08(2012) for medium-density polyethylene sheathing; tensile strength and elongation are tested to ASTM D638-14 using Type IV specimens, and heat aging is performed at 100 °C for 168 h. Retention of tensile elongation must remain above 75% after aging. Carbon black dispersion is checked to ASTM D5596-03. Loadings above 2.6 wt% reduce elongation at break below 200% and increase water absorption; loadings below 2.0 wt% fail the weathering requirement for outdoor storage. A Maddock mixer and 40% carbon black masterbatch are used; poor dispersion appears as surface pimples and pinholes at drawdown ratios above 3:1. The grade is not suitable for low-smoke zero-halogen constructions tested to EN 50267-2-2 because it contains no mineral flame-retardant fillers.

Extrusion coating of steel pipe with MDPE TE 8088 is performed on crosshead die lines using a 90–120 mm single-screw extruder and a negative pressure sleeve. The steel pipe is shot-blasted to Sa 2.5, heated to 180–200 °C, and coated with 1.5–3.0 mm of MDPE at melt temperature 220–240 °C. A thin epoxy primer or adhesive polymer interlayer is applied at 50–100 µm to bond the polyolefin to steel. The coating is tested for adhesion according to ISO 21809-1:2011 and cathodic disbondment to ASTM G8-96(2019) or ISO 15711:2003. End use includes buried oil and gas steel pipelines, water mains, and industrial piping where corrosion protection is required at operating temperatures up to 60 °C. The process is sensitive to residual steel moisture; preheat above 180 °C is needed to avoid steam pinholes.

Pulverizing Extrusion-Grade TE 8088 for Rotational Molding Trials

Before charging into cast aluminium or fabricated steel molds, the pellet must be ground below 35 mesh and dry blended with internal air-release additives. Because the supplied form is pellets, ambient pulverization is required, with not more than 10 wt% retained above 35 mesh. The powder is dry blended with 0.1–0.3 wt% antioxidant and optional 0.5–1.0 wt% carbon black masterbatch. Oven temperatures are 260–290 °C, the mold rotation ratio is 4:1, and cooling uses forced air followed by water mist. Wall thickness targets are 3–6 mm. End products include agricultural water storage tanks, secondary containment trays, and flotation buoys. Published data for this specific extrusion-grade pellet in rotational molding is limited; each mold geometry requires trial runs because pellet-derived powder particle shape and bulk density differ from reactor-grade rotomolding resin. The process window must be revalidated when the powder is stored above 60% relative humidity because moisture absorption lengthens the oven cycle by 4–8% and produces internal bubbles in thick sections.
