Application of Petroquimica Triunfo Trithene MDPE CX 8087

In buried gas distribution and rural water laterals, Trithene CX 8087 is processed on grooved-feed single-screw extruders with a screw length-to-diameter ratio of 30:1 to 33:1. The melt stream is maintained between 190 °C and 215 °C at the die head, with vacuum sizing applied to hold outside diameter within ±0.5 mm. Pipe-grade medium-density polyethylene in the 0.930–0.940 g/cm³ density class is selected for its resistance to slow crack growth and rapid crack propagation in lower-pressure gas service lines. Carbon black is added at 2.0–2.5 wt% when the pipe is exposed to ultraviolet radiation during above-grade transitions. The hydrostatic design basis is derived from long-term pressure testing under ISO 9080 and classified under ISO 12162. Wall thickness calculation for potable water lines follows ISO 4427-2, and gas distribution requires EN 1555-2 or ASTM D2513. The material must not be processed above 240 °C because oxidation accelerates at higher melt temperatures and reduces pipe service life. Batch conformity requires density by ASTM D1505, melt flow rate by ASTM D1238 at 190 °C/2.16 kg, carbon black dispersion per ISO 18553, and oxidative induction time per ISO 11357-6.

How Does the Rotational Molding Cycle Exploit the 0.934 g/cm³ Density Range of CX 8087?

The rotational molding process for CX 8087 begins with pellet grinding to a powder distribution in which 10–15 wt% passes through a 60-mesh sieve and the remainder is retained on 35-mesh. A nominal density of 0.934 g/cm³ and a melt flow rate in the 4.0–6.0 g/10 min bracket under ASTM D1238 at 190 °C/2.16 kg place the grade in the high-flow rotomolding segment. Oven set temperatures are held between 280 °C and 320 °C; the internal peak air temperature measured inside the mold is the primary cycle control variable and is maintained between 200 °C and 210 °C. If the internal peak air temperature remains below 195 °C, incomplete densification produces pinholes and poor interparticle coalescence. If the internal peak air temperature exceeds 220 °C, thermo-oxidative degradation increases yellowness index and reduces low-temperature impact strength. Biaxial rotation is normally set at 4:1 primary-to-secondary axis speed, with primary rotation between 6 rpm and 12 rpm depending on mold diameter. Oven residence time for wall sections between 4 mm and 8 mm typically spans 18 min to 30 min. External mold release is applied in a thin film; silicone-based release agents are used for food-contact tanks only if the release system is cleared for incidental contact. The powder is dry-blended with 0.2–0.5 wt% hindered amine light stabilizer masterbatch or 0.5–2.0 wt% carbon black masterbatch for outdoor service. Color matching requires a single-screw turbo-mixer at low speed to avoid frictional heat buildup above 50 °C.

After oven densification, cooling is staged to control shrinkage and warpage. Air mist cooling for 10–15 min is followed by water spray for 5–10 min, then final forced air. Rapid water quench of large flat panels introduces differential thermal contraction and can increase warp; the cooling sequence is therefore lengthened for parts with surface area above 2 m². Environmental stress cracking resistance is verified under ASTM D1693 Condition B using 10% Igepal CO-630 at 50 °C; industrial quality control for chemical storage tanks often requires failure beyond 1,000 h. Low-temperature impact is evaluated by ISO 6603-2 at -20 °C on machined plaques cut from the part wall. End products include agricultural chemical storage tanks, water storage tanks, road barriers, playground structures, and secondary containment pallets. Food-contact tanks require certification against FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c) 2.1 or 2.2 and, for European market placement, EU Regulation No 10/2011 with overall migration below 10 mg/dm² in the specified simulant. Published data for this specific grade in fuel-contact tanks is limited; immersion testing under ASTM D543 is required before diesel or urea storage is approved.

Flat-die extrusion of CX 8087 into geomembrane sheet in thicknesses from 1.5 mm to 2.5 mm uses a barrier screw and a screen pack with a 100/120/200 mesh configuration. Melt temperature at the flat die is held between 200 °C and 230 °C, and the calendering stack is maintained at 70–90 °C to stabilize gauge. Carbon black is compounded at 2.0–3.0 wt% with a dispersion rating of ≤3 per ISO 18553 to achieve the UV resistance required for landfill and pond liner service. Thickness tolerance is specified at ±10% of nominal, and the sheet is wound with interleaving to prevent blocking during storage above 30 °C. Seam welding is performed with wedge welders at 230–260 °C and travel speeds between 1.0 m/min and 2.2 m/min; seam peel and shear strength are evaluated under ASTM D4437. Parent-sheet tensile properties follow ASTM D6693 Type IV specimens at 50 mm/min, and puncture resistance is measured per ASTM D4833. The environmental stress cracking resistance of geomembrane formulations is assessed by ASTM D5397 notched constant tensile load testing. This application is limited to continuous service temperatures below 60 °C; exposure to concentrated oxidizing acids or aromatic hydrocarbons requires compatibility pre-qualification because medium-density polyethylene can swell and lose tensile strength.

If Blow Molding Is Specified for Industrial Containers, Melt Strength and Parison Programming Define Wall Uniformity

Extrusion blow molding with CX 8087 is constrained by the grade’s medium-density melt strength, which is lower than that of typical blow-molding HDPE. Accumulator-head machines with die gap settings between 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm are used for containers up to approximately 1,000 L. Melt temperature is controlled between 180 °C and 200 °C; higher temperatures cause parison sag and non-uniform wall distribution. Parison programming is set to compensate for the upper bottle region, with wall thickness verified at no less than 0.8 mm in the chime area for UN-certified chemical packaging. Mold temperature is maintained at 10–30 °C, and blow pressure is applied at 0.6–0.9 MPa. The resin’s environmental stress cracking resistance is advantageous for containers holding surfactants, agricultural adjuvants, and mild acids, but each chemical formulation must be tested by ASTM D543 immersion at 23 °C and 50 °C for a minimum of 30 days. Containers intended for food contact require FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 certification and migration testing under EU Regulation No 10/2011. Because MDPE has lower top-load stiffness than HDPE, the closure area may require thicker walls or reinforcing ribs; top-load capacity is verified per ASTM D2659 on empty containers. Blow-molded parts made from CX 8087 are not recommended for prolonged service with chlorinated solvents at temperatures above 40 °C.

Telecom Duct Conduit Extrusion and Crush Resistance

Solid-wall and corrugated conduit made from CX 8087 are produced on vacuum-calibrated extrusion lines with a screw L/D of 30:1. For solid-wall telecom duct, melt temperature is maintained between 190 °C and 210 °C, and the vacuum sizer is operated at -0.02 MPa to -0.05 MPa to control ovality. Carbon black content is set at 2.0–3.0 wt% for outdoor weathering resistance. Crush resistance is evaluated under ASTM D2412 at 5% deflection, and impact resistance is measured per ASTM D2444 at -20 °C. The conduit specification commonly references ASTM F2160 for solid-wall HDPE conduit based on controlled outside diameter, and electrical non-conductivity is verified under ASTM D257. For European market placement, low-smoke and halogen-free requirements are verified against EN 50267-2-1 and EN 60684-3 where applicable. Published data for CX 8087 in telecom duct applications is limited; batch-specific oxidative induction time and carbon black dispersion certificates must be obtained before specifying the grade for exposed conduit. The material is not rated for continuous conductor temperatures above 75 °C, and installed pull tension must not exceed the manufacturer’s maximum pulling force calculation based on 0.5 coefficient of friction.

Drip Irrigation Laterals Require Thin-Wall Tube Extrusion and Residual Chlorine Verification

Drip irrigation laterals and microtubes made from CX 8087 are extruded at high line speed with wall thicknesses between 0.5 mm and 1.2 mm. The extruder is configured with a pressure-relief screen pack and a spiral mandrel die, with melt temperature controlled at 185–205 °C. Vacuum calibration maintains lumen diameter within ±0.1 mm, and the tube is cooled in water baths held at 20–30 °C. Laser perforation or mechanical punch systems create emitters at specified intervals, and emitter flow uniformity is verified under ISO 9261. The material must be stabilized for humid environments; carbon black masterbatch at 1.0–2.0 wt% or a non-black UV package is used depending on customer color requirements. Residual chlorine resistance is a known limitation for polyethylene irrigation piping; the material should be validated under ISO 1167 at 60 °C with chlorinated water at 2 ppm minimum free chlorine before specification for municipal recycled water systems. Field failure in drip laterals often begins at emitter punch holes; therefore tensile properties of the perforated wall are verified per ASTM D638 on specimens cut across the emitter zone. The grade is not recommended for hot-water disinfection above 60 °C or for continuous service with hydrogen peroxide concentrations above 50 ppm without prior compatibility testing.
