Application of PetroChina Liaoyang UHMWPE PZUH3500

In lithium-ion battery separator lines operating with the wet-biaxial stretching route, PZUH3500 is introduced as a high-viscosity modifier in the polyethylene gel rather than as a standalone extrusion resin. The formulation point is defined by the PZUH3500 content in the total polyethylene solids, typically 12–25 wt%, with the balance being high-density polyethylene having a melt flow index of 0.2–1.0 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022. Liquid paraffin is metered at 65–80 wt% of the total gel feed to create the phase-separated structure that is later extracted. Compliance for the separator product is assessed under GB/T 36363-2018 for porosity, air permeability, puncture strength and thermal shrinkage, while cell-level safety validation references UL 2580 and IEC 62660-3:2022; European chemical registration is maintained under REACH (EC) No 1907/2006 and the finished separator must satisfy RoHS 2011/65/EU restricted substances requirements. The production process begins with low-shear blending of PZUH3500 powder and HDPE pellets, followed by melt compounding in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with L/D 48–60 and barrel temperatures between 180 °C and 230 °C. The gel sheet is cast through a T-die onto a chill roll held at 15–40 °C to a thickness of 800–1500 μm. Sequential biaxial stretching is performed at 95–125 °C, with machine-direction draw ratios of 4:1–7:1 and transverse-direction draw ratios of 5:1–9:1, followed by extraction of paraffin with n-heptane or methylene chloride and heat setting at 110–135 °C to yield a final separator thickness of 5–16 μm. On production lines equipped with 1.2–1.8 m wide cast-film dies, a recurring defect is transverse thickness banding caused by incomplete homogenization of the high-molecular-weight fraction; this is minimized by restricting screw speed to 200–300 rpm and maintaining melt filtration through 20–40 μm screen packs ahead of the metering pump. PZUH3500 must be pre-dried at 80 °C for 2 h when storage relative humidity exceeds 60% because surface moisture on the powder lowers gel homogeneity and creates pinholes after stretching. Published quantitative data for PZUH3500 in separator formulations is limited to industrial qualification trials; the ranges above represent operating windows observed on commercial wet-process separator equipment rather than laboratory coupons.

What Limits Gel-Spun Fiber Tenacity When PZUH3500 Is Processed at 3.5×10⁶ g/mol?

The governing limitation is not spinneret pressure but the dissolution and filtration window. PZUH3500 is prepared as a 6–9 wt% solution in decalin or high-purity white oil, with 0.1–0.3 wt% hindered phenolic antioxidant based on solution mass to suppress chain scission during dissolution. The solution is prepared under nitrogen blanketing at 150–170 °C in a horizontal kneader or twin-screw dissolver with L/D ≥ 40, then passed through sintered metal filters with absolute ratings of 10–20 μm before the gear pump. Gel filaments are extruded through spinnerets with capillary diameters of 0.5–1.0 mm at melt temperatures of 130–150 °C, quenched in water at 5–20 °C, and wound as gel yarn containing 80–95 wt% solvent. The solvent is removed in an extraction train using n-heptane or dichloromethane, and the dried yarn is hot-drawn in multiple stages at 135–150 °C to a total draw ratio of 45:1–65:1; residual solvent after drying is controlled below 0.1 wt% because higher residuals reduce creep resistance and increase flammability of the final product. Ballistic fiber compliance is assessed under NIJ 0101.06 for body armor panels, offshore mooring ropes under ISO 18692-1:2018, and cut-resistant gloves under EN 388:2016+A1:2018. Terminal products include unidirectional ballistic laminates, high-modulus ropes for deepwater mooring and towage, and knitted glove shells. Process experience on pilot and commercial gel-spinning lines shows that a 1 °C deviation in dissolution temperature near 170 °C can create gel particles that pass the 10 μm filter and cause filament breaks at draw ratios above 50:1; the operating window is therefore narrower than for lower-molecular-weight grades. Avoid oxygen ingress during dissolution, and avoid melt temperatures above 170 °C because chain degradation shifts molecular weight distribution and reduces tensile strength.

Compression-Molded Wear Liners and Bulk Solids Handling Surfaces

PZUH3500 powder is processed by compression molding because its melt viscosity is above the measurable melt flow range under ISO 1133-1:2022; the powder does not flow as a conventional thermoplastic melt. The standard formulation is 100 wt% PZUH3500 powder, with 0.3–1.0 wt% hindered phenolic antioxidant and, where outdoor exposure requires ultraviolet stabilization, 0.5–2.0 wt% carbon black masterbatch. The powder is deposited in a mold cavity, compacted at ambient temperature, and heated under platen pressure of 5–10 MPa at 200–215 °C for a soak time of 10–15 min per 10 mm of part thickness. Cooling is conducted under pressure at a controlled rate of 5–15 °C/min to reduce warpage and internal stresses. Compliance is typically based on ASTM D4020 for molecular weight verification, ISO 11542-2 for extruded and molded test specimen properties, and FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 or EU 10/2011 when liners contact food or pharmaceutical bulk solids. Terminal finished products include hopper and silo discharge liners, chute liners, impact pads, and conveyor wear strips for mining, cement, grain handling, and packaging operations. A practical failure mode on large compression presses is non-uniform platen temperature across panels wider than 2 m; if the edge temperature falls below 195 °C while the center reaches 215 °C, incomplete particle fusion at the panel edges appears as chalky, abraded material after 200 h of sliding service. Continuous dry sliding service is limited to temperatures below 80 °C because the thermal conductivity of UHMWPE is approximately 0.40 W/m·K; frictional heat accumulation accelerates wear and surface oxidation.

Where filtration media require a self-supporting porous polyethylene structure without resin binders, PZUH3500 powder is used at 100 wt% as a binderless sintered medium. The particle size distribution is controlled by sieving to a typical range of 100–300 μm, which produces interconnected porosity with mean pore diameters from 10 μm to 50 μm depending on sintering time and tooling pressure. The powder is gravity-filled or vibration-packed into a mold and sintered at 175–195 °C for 20–40 min under contact pressure below 0.5 MPa; temperatures below 170 °C leave weak inter-particle necks, while temperatures above 200 °C cause pore collapse and densification. Pore size distribution is measured by mercury intrusion porosimetry per ISO 15901-1:2016, and material compliance for food contact is evaluated under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU 10/2011. Terminal products include porous filter tubes, aeration diffuser plates, pneumatic silencer elements, and vent membranes for aqueous and air filtration systems. Published data for PZUH3500 specifically in porous sintered applications is limited; the processing window is established from general UHMWPE sintering practice rather than grade-specific qualification data.

When Ram Extrusion Replaces Melt Pump Processing in Wear Strip Fabrication

In ram extrusion lines producing solid wear strips and guide rails, PZUH3500 is processed without a melt pump because the melt does not form a typical viscous liquid. The feed formulation is 99.2–99.8 wt% PZUH3500 powder with 0.2–0.8 wt% processing antioxidant; where reduced dry sliding friction is specified, 2–5 wt% polytetrafluoroethylene or 2–5 wt% molybdenum disulfide may be compounded as a separate powder fraction. The ram extruder barrel is heated in zones from 190 °C to 220 °C, and the die zone is held at 170–200 °C; hydraulic ram pressure is maintained at 2–4 MPa backpressure with die land lengths of 30–60 mm to consolidate each ram stroke into a continuous profile. Output on a 80–100 mm barrel is typically 3–8 kg/h, significantly lower than melt-pump extrusion but necessary to preserve molecular weight. Compliance for food-contact conveyor guides and star wheels is evaluated under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU 10/2011; mechanical properties are characterized by ISO 527-2:2012 and ISO 178:2019. Terminal products include wear strips for beverage filling lines, chain guides for packaging conveyors, and guide rails for water treatment scraper systems. A characteristic process defect in ram-extruded sections is the formation of annular fusion rings at the boundary between successive ram strokes; the defect cannot be fully eliminated but is minimized by maintaining a constant hydraulic stroke length and a barrel residence time below 20 min at the upper barrel temperature. Thin-walled sections below 8 mm are not recommended because stroke-boundary discontinuities reduce flexural strength.
