Application of PetroChina Liaoyang UHMWPE PZUH2600

In solid-conveying and bottling lines, ram extrusion of PetroChina Liaoyang UHMWPE PZUH2600 is specified only where continuous single-screw extrusion cannot generate sufficient interparticle fusion. The grade is charged as a reactor powder into a reciprocating ram extruder with a barrel L/D ratio of 20:1–24:1; the feed throat is water-jacketed at 20–40°C to prevent powder bridging while the barrel is divided into three independent heating zones. Metering-zone set-points of 200–240°C and die set-points of 220–250°C permit consolidation without reaching the oxidative-decomposition threshold observed above 260°C. Ram-face pressures of 20–40 MPa are applied, but pressure drop along the barrel is nonlinear and highly sensitive to powder bulk density. Because the resin has a viscosity-average molecular weight in the 2.6×106 g/mol class, no meaningful melt flow index is obtained under ASTM D1238; lot release is normally assessed by viscosity number per ISO 1628-3 and by extrudate dimensional stability. Profiles above 40 mm cross-section require internal cooling because the low thermal conductivity of UHMWPE—approximately 0.41 W/(m·K) in molded plaques—retards core solidification and increases stress-cracking risk at the mandrel. Pre-drying at 80°C for 2–4 h is applied when powder exposure to relative humidity above 60% is suspected. For food-contact guide rails and star wheels, converter certification under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(b) and Commission Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 is a downstream obligation; the resin alone is not a food-contact article. Terminal components include wear strips, chain guide rails, and screw conveyors for dry or aqueous product transfer where metal-to-polymer replacement is specified for noise reduction and cleaning-cycle tolerance.

What Limits Compression Molding Cycle Time for PZUH2600 Slab Stock?

The limiting factor in closed-die compression molding of PZUH2600 slabs is heat transfer through a polymer bed that remains solid until the platen temperature exceeds approximately 200°C and is consolidated under 10–20 MPa. The powder does not form a low-viscosity fluid; it sinters and densifies at particle boundaries, and press-pressure escalation must be staged. A common industrial cycle for a 50 mm slab is a 20–30 min heat-soak segment at 200–230°C, a 10–15 min dwell at full pressure, and forced cooling at 5–15 K/min until the core temperature is below 60°C. Cooling rate is the limiting variable: cycle time increases approximately with the square of part thickness, and cracking or void formation is documented when platens are opened above 60–70°C. The mold must be vented during initial heating; omission of venting is associated with delamination in the bottom third of thick sections. Compression-molded sheets made from PZUH2600 are machined into chute liners, hopper liners, silo discharge cone liners, and transfer plates for cement, coal, and mineral handling. Abrasive wear testing under ASTM D4020-18 classification alone does not predict slurry field service; converters commonly add sliding abrasion tests using a sand slurry tester or Taber abrasion per ASTM D4060 at a defined load and cycle count. In food or potable-water contact, molded liners require compliance verification under 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU 10/2011; potable-water approval may require additional national certification for specific migration of antimony, lead, and total organic carbon. Design limitations include notch sensitivity: internal corner radii below 6 mm should be avoided unless finite-element stress analysis supports the geometry.

Gel spinningsolution 130–150°C, draw ratio >30:1gel defects or filament fibrillation beyond the grade-specific draw window

When gel spinning is selected as the conversion route for PZUH2600, the objective is not elongation of a melt but controlled disentanglement of high-molecular-weight chains in a solvent-rich gel. Dissolution is carried out in paraffin oil or decalin at 130–150°C; concentration is typically 8–15 wt%. The solution is filtered to remove gel particles and extruded through spinnerets with capillary diameters of 0.5–1.0 mm into a quench bath. Gel filaments are then extracted and hot-drawn in multiple stages; total draw ratios above 30:1 are required to orient the high-Mw fraction. Tensile tenacity increases nonlinearly with draw ratio up to the point where fibrillation or surface damage appears. Published data for this specific grade in a gel-spun fiber configuration is limited, so converter trials should establish the draw-ratio window by running tenacity-versus-draw-ratio curves on the actual spinning line. Because residual solvent must be removed before braiding or coating, extraction and drying are monitored by gas chromatography; commercial gel-spun UHMWPE fiber lines typically target residual solvent below 0.1 wt%. Terminal products include cut-resistant protective apparel, high-strength ropes, slings, and composite reinforcement. Tensile testing of yarns follows ISO 2062; rope tensile testing may follow EN ISO 2307. Cut resistance is evaluated under EN 388 or ANSI/ISEA 105.

When Microporous Membrane Casting Enters the Biaxial Stretching Window

Wet-process separator lines that blend PZUH2600 into an HDPE matrix exploit the high-Mw fraction as a melt-strength modifier during sheet casting and as a puncture-resistance contributor after extraction and stretching. An industrial formulation range is 10–30 wt% PZUH2600 with a lower-viscosity PE resin and 50–70 wt% paraffin oil or dibutyl phthalate as process plasticizer. The mixture is compounded in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder at 180–220°C, cast through a flat die onto a chill roll, biaxially stretched at 100–120°C, and then conveyed through a solvent extraction bath. The high-Mw component raises extensional viscosity during stretching, which narrows the process window: insufficient addition fails to prevent melt fracture, while excessive addition produces gel defects that reduce membrane breakdown voltage. After extraction, membrane thickness typically falls between 9 µm and 25 µm for battery separator grades; porosity and pore size are measured by mercury intrusion porosimetry, and gas permeability is measured by a bubble point method such as ISO 2942. Thermal shutdown for PE-based separators is commonly in the 130–140°C range, while melt integrity retention depends on residual plasticizer and orientation. The terminal product is a microporous separator for lithium-ion cells or a substrate for coated separators. Compliance for battery separators normally includes puncture strength testing under an internal battery manufacturer specification, thickness tolerance per ASTM D374, and dimensional stability at 105°C for 1 h.

Pressureless Sintered Filters and the Particle-Boundary Pore Structure

A distinct conversion route for PZUH2600 is pressureless or low-pressure sintering in preheated molds at 190–210°C. The part is held at temperature until interparticle fusion forms a porous skeleton; porosity is governed by powder particle size distribution, packing density, and vibration-assisted mold filling. Sintered porous components made from UHMWPE exhibit porosity in the 30–40% range and are used for aeration diffusers, pneumatic exhaust silencers, liquid filtration frits in noncritical solvent service, and air intake filters in dusty environments. Unlike fully densified compression-molded parts, porous sintered UHMWPE has lower tensile strength, and part-specific mechanical characterization is required before installation. Compliance may include bubble point testing per ISO 2942 and differential pressure evaluation under customer-specific protocols. Chemical resistance data from polymer suppliers typically limits UHMWPE service in oxidizing acids such as nitric acid above 30% concentration at ambient or elevated temperature; converter trials are required for any oxidizing media. The exact retention rating depends on the powder fraction and sintering cycle; published data for this specific grade in porous component form is limited.

Twin-Screw Compounding of PZUH2600 as an Abrasion-Resistance Package

In polyethylene blown film and pipe compounds, addition of 5–20 wt% PZUH2600 powder to a base HDPE resin is used to increase slow crack growth resistance and wear resistance, though dispersion requires strong shear and temperature control. Because the PZUH2600 phase remains highly viscous, compounders use commercial UHMWPE masterbatches or direct powder dosing into a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with an L/D ratio of 40:1–52:1 and a side feeder. A melt temperature of 190–220°C at the die is preferred; higher temperatures reduce shear heating but sacrifice molecular weight retention. Die-head pressure increases when PZUH2600 content exceeds 15 wt%, and torque-limited operation or a pump-head upgrade is often required. The terminal compounds are intended for pipe, automotive wire loom, cable conduit, and industrial sheet applications. Testing includes notched pipe slow crack growth per ISO 13479, Taber abrasion per ASTM D4060, and tensile properties per ISO 527-3. Additive packages containing free-radical initiators intended for crosslinking should be evaluated for gel formation because UHMWPE chains can increase gel specks in noncrosslinked compounds.
