Application of PetroChina Liaoyang PE-Xa J0253P

PetroChina Liaoyang PE-Xa J0253P is processed as a peroxide-crosslinkable high-density polyethylene base resin for potable water distribution circuits in residential and commercial plumbing. In this first downstream track the material is compounded with 0.20–0.40 wt% active dicumyl peroxide equivalent, typically supplied as a 20–30% peroxide masterbatch in LDPE or EVA, plus 0.10–0.30 wt% hindered phenolic antioxidant and 0.05–0.15 wt% auxiliary metal deactivator. The peroxide level is balanced against scorch safety: at barrel temperatures between 160°C and 190°C the half-life of dicumyl peroxide requires a residence time below 2–4 min from feed to die, while die temperature is raised to 190–210°C to initiate crosslinking at the outer molecular network. A single-screw extruder with L/D 28–33, barrier screw, and dynamic melt pressure transducer is used; screw speed is set so that specific mechanical energy input does not push melt temperature above 210°C. Post-extrusion crosslinking is completed in a heated curing unit or by residual heat in the coiled product until gel content measured by ISO 10147 exceeds 70%. Pipe dimensions follow ISO 4065 and ISO 15875-2, with SDR 7.4 or SDR 9 chosen for the required hydrostatic design stress; extracted samples are subjected to long-term hydrostatic strength testing under ISO 9080 and liquid pressure resistance under ISO 1167. Potable water contact approval is commonly assessed through NSF/ANSI 61 or national potable water certifications such as KTW-BWGL or BS 6920. The final products are 16–63 mm coils and straight lengths joined by cold-ring expansion fittings; pneumatic or hydrostatic test pressure at 6–10 bar is used on-site according to the design class. The operational boundary for this grade in potable service is the pressure/temperature envelope defined by ISO 15875 application class 1 and class 2: continuous 60°C or 70°C with peaks up to 80°C and not exceeding 10 bar at 20°C.

What Limits Continuous 70°C Radiant Heating Fluid Design Stress?

In closed-loop underfloor heating circuits, the J0253P-based pipe is coextruded with an ethylene vinyl alcohol oxygen barrier or given an aluminium oxygen-diffusion barrier. The governing failure mode is long-term hydrostatic creep at elevated water temperature, not short-term burst. Continuous loop supply temperature is held at 35–45°C for low-carbon heat pump circuits, with hydronic balancing to a temperature drop of 5–10 K across each circuit. Circuit length is limited to 120 m for 16 mm nominal outside diameter and 150 m for 20 mm pipe at a manifold flow rate of 2.0–2.5 L/min per loop, keeping specific pressure drop below 200–250 Pa/m. The peroxide formulation is adjusted upward relative to potable cold-water service: 0.35–0.50 wt% active peroxide equivalent is used to raise gel content above 75–80% after curing because elevated temperature swell and creep resistance correlate with network density. Oxygen permeation across the PEXa wall is controlled because dissolved oxygen accelerates oxidative degradation of ferrous boiler components and circulators; DIN 4726 oxygen diffusion limits are met by a 0.08–0.12 mm EVOH layer buried between two tie-layer adhesive films. Extrusion for this structure requires a five-layer coextrusion line with rheologically matched PEXa, adhesive, EVOH, adhesive, and PEXa layers; interfacial temperature at the die is held between 195°C and 210°C to avoid EVOH degradation while permitting outer-layer crosslinking. The finished product is a floor circuit with no in-slab fittings, connected at manifold stations by screw or press adapters. Installation pressure testing at 6 bar for 24 h is performed before screed pouring, followed by a second test after covering. ISO 15875 application class 4 and ISO 11855 embedded surface heating/cooling design methods govern the thermal performance; heat output is typically 60–120 W/m² for modern low-temperature buildings.

Pre-insulated District Heating Branch Pipe Service Requirements

District heating branch service is the most demanding non-boiler application for J0253P because the operating regime sits near the upper allowable thermal envelope for PEXa. Supply water from urban networks enters building heat exchangers at 80–95°C and 6–10 bar; the selected pipe must therefore meet ISO 15875 application class 5 with SDR 7.4 dimensional sizing. In this segment the J0253P base resin is compounded with 0.45–0.60 wt% active peroxide equivalent and a stabilizer package oriented toward long-term hydrolytic ageing, including 0.2–0.4 wt% polymeric hindered phenol plus 0.1–0.2 wt% phosphite synergist. Gel content after annealing is verified above 80% by xylene extraction using ISO 10147 because residual uncrosslinked fraction contributes to higher creep at 90°C. The service pipe is produced in dimensions from 25 mm to 63 mm outside diameter and inserted into HDPE casing with polyurethane foam insulation of 30–50 mm radial thickness; the casing provides watertight protection and the foam bonds to both service pipe and casing to form a self-supporting bonded system under EN 253. Continuous extrusion must avoid peroxide scorch before the die and simultaneously generate enough heat to cure the outer layer, so barrel zones are profiled from 150°C at the feed throat to 185°C at the metering section, with a separate die zone at 200–215°C. Twin coextrusion of two service pipes in a single casing is performed by crosshead die geometry with individual melt channels. Field installation uses pre-insulated branch joints with shrink-on sleeves and foam fill, not open-trench welding; PEXa cannot be butt-welded. Pressure testing after joint assembly is carried out at 1.5× design pressure or according to EN 253 annex procedures. The final assembly terminates in building substations where plate heat exchangers separate district water from internal plumbing.

Peroxide Crosslink Density Governs Resistance to Aggressive Aqueous Media

Industrial process fluid transfer with J0253P is concentrated in low-pressure chemical dosing, water treatment, and process wash lines where metallic piping would undergo corrosion but temperature and solvent load remain within PEXa chemical compatibility boundaries. The primary technical control is not wall thickness alone but the degree of crosslinking achieved during extrusion, because solvent swelling and oxidative attack propagate through amorphous regions that are reduced as gel content moves from 70% to 85%. In this segment the J0253P resin is compounded at 0.50–0.70 wt% active peroxide equivalent, close to the scorch limit, and the extruder is configured with a downstream infrared annealing tunnel that maintains pipe surface temperature at 90–120°C for 15–30 min to complete network formation. Industrial formulations include 0.20–0.40 wt% acid-neutralizing calcium stearate and a sulphur-free secondary antioxidant package to avoid metal-catalysed degradation in demineralised water loops. The service envelope is typically limited to pH 2–12 aqueous streams at temperatures below 70°C and uninterrupted pressure below 8 bar; compatibility with specific oxidizers, chlorinated solvents, or aromatic process fluids must be tested against ASTM D543 or ISO 175 immersion methods before installation. A production-scale failure mode observed in extrusion lines is the formation of micro-gels when the peroxide masterbatch is unevenly distributed: these gels appear as surface bumps and create stress concentrations that reduce long-term hydrostatic strength in ISO 1167 testing. Continuous melt filtration through 100–150 μm screen packs and static mixer homogenisation after masterbatch injection are therefore used. Finished product is installed with mechanical compression or press fittings and fixed with steel or GRP clamps at intervals to control expansion; no solvent cement or heat-fusion jointing is permissible. Repeated thermal cycling at 20–70°C requires expansion offsets calculated at 0.15–0.20 mm/(m·K) for PEXa pipe, a limitation that must be written into isometric drawings.

When J0253P-Based Pipe Is Embedded in 200 mm Concrete Slabs for Snow-Melt Systems

External snow and ice melting is an application where the crosslinked polyethylene product operates under low fluid temperatures but high thermal resistance from concrete cover. Hydronic slabs are designed for heat output of 100–250 W/m² for pavement surfaces in temperate climates, with a supply fluid temperature of 40–55°C and a temperature differential of 5–8 K across the circuits. J0253P pipes of 20 mm outside diameter are secured to reinforcement grid at 150–250 mm spacing, with equivalent SDR 9 wall thickness because internal pressure is seldom above 4–6 bar; the critical stress source is not internal pressure but point loading during concrete placement and subsequent vehicle traffic. The J0253P compound for this segment uses the same peroxide addition as radiant floor heating, 0.35–0.50 wt% active peroxide equivalent, but the stabilizer package is shifted to lower organic phosphite content and higher polymeric hindered phenol to avoid surface exudation that could reduce bond to concrete. Extruded pipe is coiled in 50–100 m loops and delivered with monolithic circuit lengths because any coupling inside the concrete is prohibited. The installation procedure requires a pressure test at 6 bar for 24 h before pouring; during concrete placement the pipe remains under 3–4 bar so any break is immediately visible as pressure loss. After curing, circuits are connected to a manifold with temperature-limited pump groups that prevent supply temperature overshoot above 60°C, protecting the PEXa from accelerated creep in the pavement structure. The governing design method is the heat-flux calculation of ISO 11855 or the corresponding chapter of the ASHRAE HVAC Applications volume; control is by aerial moisture and temperature sensors that hold standby slab temperature at 2–5°C to avoid unnecessary operation. Gel content quality control on the delivered coil is specified at 70–75% minimum because the structural load on the embedded pipe demands creep resistance, while higher crosslink density beyond 80% is unnecessary and complicates cold-expansion fitting attachment.

Across closed-loop geothermal boreholes and horizontal ground loops, PetroChina Liaoyang PE-Xa J0253P is supplied as high-pressure crosslinked coil stock that replaces traditional PE100 for small-capacity ground-source heat pump installations. The J0253P compound is formulated with 0.40–0.55 wt% active peroxide equivalent and a weathering stabilizer package because coiled pipe may be stored outdoors during drilling operations; UV exposure is limited to 30–60 days unless covered, as PEXa without carbon black has limited outdoor weathering resistance. The terminal component is a seamless U-bend assembly using 20–40 mm outside diameter pipe joined to the U-bend by cold-expansion or compression fittings, lowered into boreholes 50–150 m deep. In the borehole annulus, thermally conductive grout with thermal conductivity of 1.2–2.0 W/(m·K) is pumped from the bottom upward to eliminate voids; the service pipe must withstand 16 bar filling pressure and operating pressures up to 3–4 bar in the circulated loop. The circulating fluid is typically a 20–30% propylene glycol/water mixture, and the PEXa network must resist swelling and plasticizer migration under continuous contact with glycol at 0–10°C inlet temperatures. Horizontal trenches are laid at 1.2–2.0 m depth with pipe spacing of 0.4–0.8 m; loop length per zone is balanced within ±10% to maintain equal flow in manifold headers. Pressure testing before grouting uses water at 8–10 bar for 30 min, followed by a long-duration decay test. The governing standards are ISO 15875 for the pipe body and CSA B137.5 or equivalent national standards for geothermal loop installation; the use of PEXa J0253P in this application is limited to closed-loop ground heat exchangers without direct geothermal brine from unlined wells because trace hydrocarbons and aggressive ions can accelerate stress cracking in the amorphous phase.
