Application of PetroChina Liaoyang HDPE PZUH2600

Municipal potable water transmission pipes extruded from PZUH2600 are processed on grooved-feed single-screw extruders with screw diameters from 60 mm to 150 mm and L/D ratios of 30:1 to 36:1. The base resin has a density of 0.959 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1, a melt flow rate at 190 °C/5 kg of 0.20–0.30 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1, tensile yield stress at 23 °C of 24 MPa under ISO 527-2, and elongation at break above 600%. The bimodal molecular weight distribution of the resin requires a barrier screw with intensive dispersion but little shear heating; barrel set points are maintained at 180 °C in the feed zone, 195–205 °C in the compression zone, and 205–220 °C in the metering zone, while measured melt temperature at the spiral mandrel die is held between 200 °C and 230 °C. Melt pressure before the adapter is normally 250–350 bar; sustained pressure above 400 bar indicates over-dosing of carbon black masterbatch, an incorrect screen pack, or a blocked mandrel support. The carbon black masterbatch is gravimetrically dosed at 5.0–6.25 wt% for a 40% active carbon black concentrate, yielding a final carbon black content of 2.0–2.5 wt% verified by ISO 6964; dispersion homogeneity is assessed by ISO 18553. In the vacuum calibration tank, vacuum is set at -0.25 bar to -0.45 bar and first-stage water is held at 25–35 °C to form a uniform outer skin before downstream cooling at 15–20 °C. The haul-off speed is connected to wall-thickness feedback, with circumferential variation kept below ±0.5% for SDR 11 and SDR 17 pipe. Final hydrostatic performance must satisfy ISO 4427-2 and EN 12201-2; for potable water contact in North America, NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 applies. Where free chlorine exceeds 2 mg/L, long-term chlorine resistance under ASTM F2263 should be validated; published data for PZUH2600 under that specific protocol is limited. The terminal products are 20 mm to 1200 mm OD water mains, service lines, and fire ring mains, generally black with blue identification stripes for drinking water networks.

Pressure ratings correspond to PE100 class under ISO 12162, with MRS of 10 MPa. For SDR 11 the design pressure at 20 °C is PN 16; for SDR 17 it is PN 10. Minimum hydrostatic resistance under ISO 1167 is 100 h at 20 °C and 12.4 MPa hoop stress plus 165 h at 80 °C and 5.5 MPa hoop stress. Processing outside the defined melt corridor causes a measurable loss in these values through chain-scission and oxidative degradation. In high-humidity plants above 60% relative humidity, the resin must be pre-dried to a surface moisture content below 0.02 wt% before extrusion to prevent porosity and surface pitting. Continuous operation above 60 °C is outside the standard pressure-rating basis of ISO 4427-2; pressure derating must follow ISO 13760.

How Natural Gas Distribution Pipe Extrusion Differs from Potable Water Production

Unlike potable water extrusion, natural gas distribution pipe from PZUH2600 is extruded under a tighter melt-temperature corridor of 190–210 °C because residual thermal oxidation increases the probability of rapid crack propagation under ISO 13479. Gas pipe is typically specified in SDR 11 for operating pressures up to 10 bar, while SDR 17 is used for lower-pressure distribution networks at 4 bar. The carbon black masterbatch is added at the same final content of 2.0–2.5 wt%, but the yellow identification stripe is coextruded as a separate layer with a thickness of 0.2–0.3 mm, not printed. A spiral mandrel die with die-gap ratio of 1.2:1 to 1.6:1 is used to reduce melt fracture. The finished pipe must comply with ISO 4437-2, EN 1555-2, GB/T 15558.2, and in the United States ASTM D2513 under 49 CFR Part 192. Terminal products are 20 mm to 630 mm OD black-yellow PE100 gas mains, service pipes, and electrofusion-coupled branch saddles.

Processors must not use regrind from other resin grades or from pipe stored outdoors without re-qualification by ISO 13479 at 0 °C because contaminants act as crack initiation sites. The notched pipe test critical pressure at 0 °C must exceed 1.5 times the maximum operating pressure for the specified SDR. Slow crack growth resistance is verified by ISO 16241 using the notched method, and the pipe must exhibit no brittle failure at the specified stress intensity. The stabilizer package is fixed in the resin formulation; processors must not add antioxidant masterbatch because an excessively high OIT under ISO 11357-6 can mask poor melt processing without restoring long-term pipe-wall integrity.

After tailings and dredge pipelines are specified in SDR 7.4 or SDR 11 solid-wall dimensions, PZUH2600 is processed on heavy-wall lines with 90/36D or 120/36D grooved-barrel extruders. The die-head size is typically 400 mm to 1600 mm, and the pipe wall thickness can exceed 30 mm. In this configuration, melt temperature is held at 190–210 °C to avoid sag; draw-down ratio is limited to 1.1:1 or lower. The vacuum calibrator is set at -0.20 bar to -0.35 bar, and first-tank water at 30–35 °C is followed by second-tank water at 15–20 °C to reduce void formation. Longitudinal reversion is measured under ISO 2505 and must not exceed 3% for wall thicknesses above 16 mm. The finished pipe is tested for hydrostatic strength under ISO 1167 and rapid crack propagation under ISO 13479; some project specifications require abrasion testing in a 20 wt% quartz slurry at 3 m/s velocity, but published data for PZUH2600 in that specific configuration is limited. The terminal products are 200 mm to 1200 mm OD black tailings lines, dredge pontoons, and process water return pipes for mine sites.

Underground Cable Duct and Microduct Extrusion Windows

For cable protection applications, PZUH2600 is extruded on high-speed lines that prioritize outside diameter stability and internal surface friction over long-term hydrostatic strength. A 25 mm/36D or 30 mm/36D single-screw extruder fitted with a barrier screw produces 5 mm to 16 mm OD microducts at 60–120 m/min. Melt temperature is set between 200 °C and 225 °C, and fluoropolymer processing aid is added at 0.1–0.5 wt% to reduce melt fracture at shear rates above 1000 s⁻¹. The outer skin is UV-stabilized with 2.0–2.5 wt% carbon black for outdoor use; indoor products are often natural resin. Calibration uses vacuum sizing sleeves with outside diameter tolerance maintained at ±0.05 mm for microducts. The finished goods must meet UL 651A, ASTM F2160, IEC 61386-24, and NEMA TC 7. Terminal articles are 5 mm to 50 mm OD microducts, 32 mm to 250 mm OD cable conduits, and multi-lumen coextruded duct assemblies for fiber-optic trunk lines.

Crush resistance under UL 651A is measured at 5% deflection; for microduct applications a minimum crush load is specified by network operators based on burial depth and backfill compaction. The resin is not to be blended with recycled material above 5 wt% in UL-listed conduits because wall collapse and duct ovality exceed acceptable tolerances under IEC 61386-24.

When PZUH2600 Is Extruded for Geothermal Ground-Loop Circuits

Geothermal ground-loop U-bend production from PZUH2600 is extruded into SDR 11 pipe of 32 mm or 40 mm OD with a wall-thickness tolerance of ±0.2 mm. The line uses a 45/30D single-screw extruder with a spiral mandrel die and a low draw-down ratio of 1.05:1 to 1.15:1. Melt temperature is held at 190–210 °C to preserve the high molecular weight tail responsible for low-temperature notched impact. Vacuum calibration is set at -0.30 bar and cooling water transitions from 25–35 °C to 10–15 °C. The pipe is coiled into 300 m or 500 m lengths and pressure-tested in the field at 4 bar for 30 min after geothermal loop installation. Standards include ISO 4427-2 for pressure pipe, ISO 13477 for rapid crack propagation at 0 °C, and ISO 1167 for hydrostatic testing at 80 °C and 5.5 MPa for 165 h. The terminal products are U-bend circuits, vertical borehole loops, and manifold header pipes for ground-source heat pump systems.

Industrial chemical drainage and low-pressure acid/alkali transfer lines made from PZUH2600 are fabricated in SDR 11 and SDR 17 configurations with butt-fusion or electrofusion joints. The resin is processed on a grooved-feed extruder at 200–230 °C with a screen pack of 20/40/60 mesh to remove gels. No chemical compatibility additive is compounded into the pipe; the resistance is inherent to the polyethylene backbone. The terminal products are acid/alkali dosing lines, electroplating rinse-water returns, and double-wall containment pipes. Chemical qualification follows ISO 175 immersion testing in the actual service fluid and slow crack growth evaluation under ISO 16241. The material is unsuitable for continuous exposure to 98% sulfuric acid, aromatic hydrocarbon solvents, or ketones; for service above 40 °C, the allowable pressure must be derated according to ISO 13760. Double-wall containment pipe is produced with a coextruded outer jacket and spacer ribs of 1.0–1.5 mm height to permit leak detection.
