PetroChina Jilin Jieyang ABS 0215E is a general-purpose injection moulding acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin positioned in the medium-flow segment. The controlling dataset for any production decision remains the supplier certificate of analysis and lot-specific melt-flow determination under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C/10 kg. Batch-to-batch melt-flow deviation from the validated set point should not exceed ±10 % for thin-wall technical components without adjustment of fill speed and hold pressure. The application scenarios that follow are restricted to verified downstream sectors; flame-barrier duties, pressure-bearing fluid contact, load-bearing structural replacement, and continuous outdoor weathering are outside the demonstrated operating envelope unless the finished article is separately qualified against the end-use standard.

Office automation housings made from ABS 0215E are produced on hot-runner injection moulding machines from 120 t to 650 t clamp force, with barrel zones profiled from 190 °C at the feed throat to 230 °C at the metering section and a nozzle set 5–10 °C below the front zone. The granulate is pre-dried at 80 °C ± 5 °C for 3–4 h in a desiccant dryer with a dew point no higher than −25 °C; residual moisture above 0.05 wt % produces silver streaks and impact loss at the knit line. The formulation for non-fire-enclosure business-machine parts uses 92–98 wt % virgin ABS 0215E, 0.5–2.0 wt % styrenics-carrier colour masterbatch, 0.1–0.3 wt % processing stabilizer, and 0.1–0.5 wt % external lubricant; post-industrial regrind is capped at 15 wt % and only after the regrind has been re-dried below 0.08 wt % and its melt-flow index under ISO 1133-1:2022 deviates less than 15 % from the virgin lot. Melt temperature is maintained between 210 °C and 240 °C, but for matte-textured covers the practical window is narrower because higher melt temperature reduces surface roughness replication, while lower melt temperature raises injection pressure and enlarges visible flow marks. Flame-retardant behaviour is not provided by this grade; parts are classified under UL 94 HB at 3.0 mm when tested in the horizontal burn position, and under IEC 62368-1:2023 they may be used only where the ABS shell is not the primary fire enclosure. Regulation 1907/2006 and directive 2011/65/EU apply to EU-bound business machines. Terminal products include scanner lids, printer front covers, monitor rear housings, keyboard upper frames, projector bezels, and non-live-part office automation covers.
Washing machine control panel housings moulded from ABS 0215E concentrate process difficulty at the interface between high-gloss aesthetic surfaces and thin-wall dimensional stability. The production line operates on injection moulding machines from 350 t to 1000 t clamp force, with a screw length-to-diameter ratio of 20:1–22:1 and a non-return valve that must hold cushion between 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm. Granulate is dried at 80 °C ± 5 °C for 3 h to a residual moisture level below 0.05 wt %, measured by ISO 15512:2019. The compound side uses 93–97 wt % ABS 0215E, 1–3 wt % titanium dioxide masterbatch, 0.2–0.5 wt % hindered phenolic antioxidant, and 0.5–1.5 wt % antistatic masterbatch; the titanium dioxide carrier must be ABS-based to prevent visual streaking, and the antistatic package must not reduce weld-line impact strength below the lot control limit. Melt temperature is held at 225 °C ± 5 °C because below 220 °C the melt cannot fill a 2.0–2.8 mm panel without an injection-pressure spike above 140 MPa, while above 230 °C the surface gloss measured at 60° under ASTM D523-14 falls by more than 5 gloss units on polished cavities. Capillary rheometry under ISO 11443 at 230 °C is recommended for each pigment-loaded lot because the shear-thinning curve shifts with masterbatch type; typical unfilled ABS values in the medium-flow segment fall from roughly 200 Pa·s at 100 s⁻¹ to 60–80 Pa·s at 1,000 s⁻¹, and the injection-speed profile must be generated from the lot-specific curve. The melt is injected at 80–150 mm/s until switch-over at 95–98 % volumetric fill, then packed at 50–80 MPa for a hold time derived from gate freeze-off rather than a fixed clock. The fixed cavity half is maintained at 60–70 °C and the moving half at 40–50 °C; this differential arrangement reduces visible sink marks around bosses and prevents edge warpage that would open the panel gap beyond 0.3 mm. Compliance is evaluated under IEC 60335-1:2020 for household appliance safety, including glow-wire testing under IEC 60695-2-11 and ball-pressure testing under IEC 60695-10-2 at 125 °C where the part is a live-part enclosure. Pass/fail must be confirmed on finished parts because residual stress shifts the indentation response. RoHS 2011/65/EU and REACH 1907/2006 are mandatory. Terminal products are control panel covers for top-load and front-load washing machines, dryer console bezels, and decorative dishwasher control trims.
In lower-skin and side-trim automotive interior work, ABS 0215E is evaluated only where heat-soak temperatures remain below 85 °C. The formulation is built around 82–90 wt % virgin ABS 0215E, 5–15 wt % post-industrial regrind from the same-trim family, 1–3 wt % black or interior-colour masterbatch, 0.2–0.5 wt % hindered phenolic antioxidant, and 0.3–0.8 wt % UV absorber when the part is mounted in glass-filtered visible light. Regrind above 15 wt % depresses notched impact strength below the statistical control limit and widens shrinkage variation to more than ±0.15 %. Drying is performed at 80 °C ± 5 °C for 3–4 h in desiccant dryers with dew point below −30 °C; moisture above 0.06 wt % produces splay on textured surfaces and intermittent peel at the knit line. Injection moulding is conducted on 450–1200 t machines with sequential valve-gated hot runners, melt temperature from 215 °C to 240 °C, and cavity temperature between 50 °C and 65 °C. Injection pressure is set between 100 MPa and 140 MPa for long-flow pillar trims, while hold pressure is held at 60–80 MPa until gate freeze. Vent depth is maintained at 0.02–0.03 mm to avoid gas-burn marks without producing flash; mould textures greater than 25 µm mean arithmetic roughness reduce visible sink but also lower measured gloss under ISO 2813:2014 and must be locked with the OEM appearance approval. Flammability is tested under ISO 3795 and FMVSS 302 with a required burn rate below 100 mm/min; volatile emission is tested under VDA 277 and fogging under VDA 278, with limits fixed by the specific OEM material specification rather than by a generic value. The finished parts include B-pillar lower covers, A-pillar interior finishers, seat side shields, centre console side trim, instrument panel lower covers, and interior door grip bezels. Unpainted upper instrument panel surfaces exposed above 100 °C are outside the operational boundary for this grade.
At flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratios above 150:1, thin-wall luggage shells push ABS 0215E into fill-pressure-dominated territory. Large single-face moulds are run on 1000–1600 t accumulator-assisted injection machines, and cavity-to-cavity flow-length ratios require melt temperatures between 210 °C and 230 °C. Above 120 MPa injection pressure, the process loses margin because flash begins at the parting line, the core shifts by more than 0.2 mm, and post-mould shrinkage variability increases sufficiently to distort the shell edge. The formulation uses 88–95 wt % ABS 0215E, 3–5 wt % colour masterbatch for opaque shells, 0.5–1.5 wt % ultraviolet stabilizer masterbatch, and 1–2 wt % titanium dioxide for light colours; the titanium dioxide load raises viscosity and narrows the fill window, so dark colours tolerate the lower melt range and light colours require the upper half of the melt range. Pre-drying is set at 80 °C ± 5 °C for 4 h, targeting residual moisture below 0.05 wt %. The cavity is cooled at 25–50 °C with high-turbulence water circuits; mould temperature above 50 °C slows cycle time without a measurable improvement in shell gloss, while below 25 °C condensation risk rises above 60 % relative humidity. Filling time is limited to 0.8–2.5 s; longer fill causes premature freeze-off at the rim and short shots in the corner region, while shorter fill generates high shear heat and localised brown streaks. Incoming resin is inspected under ISO 1133-1:2022 for melt-flow rate and under ISO 179-1/1eA for notched Charpy impact. REACH 1907/2006 and RoHS 2011/65/EU apply to imported shells in the EU; no single global luggage shell mechanical standard exists, so brand specifications commonly require notched Charpy impact above a defined lower bound at 23 °C and visual gloss retention after 200 h Xenon arc exposure under ISO 4892-2:2013. Published data for this specific luggage configuration is limited to brand-specific protocols. Terminal products are hardside travel luggage shells, briefcase shells, tool-case panels, and protective instrument cases.
Precision toy components moulded from ABS 0215E are governed by heavy-metal migration limits under EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021, ASTM F963-23, and the U.S. CPSIA lead substrate limit of 100 mg/kg; the formulation therefore prohibits non-certified pigment masterbatch, recycled feedstock, and phthalate-containing carriers. The mixture is limited to 96–100 wt % virgin ABS 0215E and 0.5–2 wt % high-purity colour masterbatch, with a carrier resin that is chemically compatible with the styrenic matrix and a pigment loading that keeps total heavy-metal migration below the element-specific limits. Drying is performed at 80 °C ± 3 °C for 2–3 h, and residual moisture is held below 0.05 wt % because dimensional tolerance on small parts becomes unstable above that threshold. The process uses 35–150 t injection moulding machines with closed-loop cushion control at 1.5–3.0 mm, melt temperature between 200 °C and 230 °C, and mould temperature between 25 °C and 40 °C. Gate locations are selected to position the knit line away from thin bosses and snap-fit hinges; ball-catch undercuts are formed by lifters with draft angles above 3°. Small-part weight repeatability is maintained within ±0.3 %, and resin lot-to-lot melt-flow variation above ±7 % requires re-qualification of the holding-pressure profile. Terminal products are toy construction blocks, model-kit components, hobby housing parts, and non-load-bearing structural components for children’s ride-on accessories.
Because decorative wiring device faceplates are tested as finished articles under IEC 60884-1:2022 and IEC 60670-1:2015, the ball-pressure requirement under IEC 60695-10-2 at 125 °C becomes the controlling process parameter. The formulation uses 90–97 wt % ABS 0215E, 1–2 wt % titanium dioxide or colour masterbatch, 0.5–1.0 wt % antistatic additive, and 0.2–0.5 wt % antioxidant; flame-retardant packages are excluded because they shift melt viscosity and complicate the high-gloss surface, which confines the material to decorative plates that do not serve as the primary fire enclosure. Processing is carried out on 120–350 t injection moulding machines with polished cavities and a central sprue-gated or diaphragm-gated feed that eliminates visible weld lines. Melt temperature is set at 215–235 °C, mould temperature at 50–70 °C, injection speed at 40–80 mm/s, and hold pressure at 60–80 MPa; cooling time is extended until the part ejection temperature falls below the Vicat softening temperature by at least 20 °C. Gate freeze-off must occur before pack release, and residual stress must be minimised because the ball-pressure indentation response is sensitive to anisotropic orientation. Terminal products are decorative faceplates, mounting frames for flush-mounted wiring devices, and non-live-part trims for wall switches and socket outlets.

PetroChina Jilin Jieyang ABS 0215E is a high-flow acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection moulding grade within the 0215 series produced at the PetroChina Jilin Petrochemical Jieyang unit. The “E” suffix identifies a flow-modified formulation that is distinct from the general-purpose 0215A and the heat-resistant 0215H. Under ISO 1133-1:2022, the producer’s nominal melt mass-flow rate measured at 220°C/10.0 kg is 22 g/10 min. Density measured to ISO 1183-1:2019 is 1.04 g/cm³. The material is supplied as natural or precolored pellets, and producer certificates record batch-specific values for melt flow rate, tensile yield stress, flexural modulus, Izod notched impact strength, and Vicat softening temperature. Because ABS is moisture-sensitive at melt temperatures, batch acceptance does not remove the pre-drying obligation. The grade is designed for injection moulding of thin-wall electronic housings, small appliance parts, automotive interior trim, and consumer products requiring improved filling behaviour at moderate clamp force. It is not a flame-retarded or UV-stabilized compound; unfilled ABS is generally classified HB under UL 94.
Pre-drying is specified at 80°C for 2–4 h in a desiccant dryer with a closed-loop air dew point of −30°C or lower. The target maximum pellet moisture is 0.05 wt%. Above that level, residual water hydrolyses nitrile groups during plastication, producing silver streaking, splay, and a measurable reduction in melt strength. In plants where relative humidity exceeds 60%, hopper drying alone is not adequate for extended downtime periods; central drying cells with dry-air conveying are used to maintain moisture below threshold. For single-stage plunger or reciprocating-screw machines, the barrel profile is typically set with the rear zone at 210°C, the centre at 220°C, the front at 230°C, and the nozzle at 225–235°C. Melt temperatures above 250°C accelerate oxidation of the butadiene phase. Full-shot residence time should remain below 5 min; if the shot size is below 25% of barrel capacity, residence-time control, not barrel temperature, becomes the primary thermal-degradation constraint. Store pellets in sealed containers at 10–30°C; opened bags should be consumed within 24 h in humid climates unless drying is continuous. Outdoor storage of skids is not recommended because UV and moisture condense inside polyethylene liners. A dried pellet moisture analysis is performed by Karl Fischer or a moisture analyser at 150°C; the result should be below 0.05 wt% before processing.
In thin-wall enclosures, the high melt-flow rate of 0215E shifts the limiting processing variable from injection pressure to cooling-consistent melt delivery. The grade is used in tools with flow-length to wall-thickness ratios above 150:1, where a lower-viscosity grade reduces pressure drop and permits lower clamp force. Process calculations based on capillary rheometry indicate that pressure drop scales inversely with melt-flow rate, but the benefit is not linear because wall-slip and entrance effects at high shear rates introduce machine-dependent corrections. On standard three-zone reciprocating-screw machines with 20:1–22:1 L/D screws and check-ring non-return valves, gate freeze and holding-pressure transfer dominate dimensional stability. Hold pressure is typically set at 50–70% of injection pressure; hold time is determined by gate-sealing studies using part weight against time. Mould temperature is 40–60°C for natural grades; higher mould temperatures improve knit-line strength at the expense of cycle time. For hot-runner systems with eight or more drop points, published data for this specific configuration is limited, and a hot-runner manufacturer’s thermal simulation should be used to set manifold temperature between 220°C and 240°C. Cavity-pressure sensors are recommended for pressure-limited tools; a pressure transducer behind the last-gate cavity provides a more reliable endpoint than screw position alone.
Plastication time should be monitored as an indirect viscosity indicator. With a screw speed of 60–100 min⁻¹, back pressure of 0.5–1.5 MPa, and shot weight within 30–70% of barrel capacity, melt temperature at the nozzle should not exceed 245°C. Screw recovery time that drifts beyond ±10% of baseline without barrel set-point changes indicates check-ring wear or non-uniform feed. Non-return valve leakage is a common cause of shot-weight variation in ABS; the clearance should be measured during scheduled maintenance. In machines equipped with closed-loop injection control, the switchover point from velocity to pressure control should be set after the part is visually full but before the cavity-pressure spike exceeds 50 MPa.
Mould shrinkage for 0215E is orientation-dependent because ABS flow freezes orientation during filling. Typical linear shrinkage under ISO 294-4 is reported in the 0.4–0.6% band parallel to flow and 0.5–0.7% perpendicular to flow, depending on wall thickness, mould temperature, and holding pressure. Warpage in flat covers correlates with differential shrinkage across the gate-to-vent path. When warpage is observed, holding pressure should be raised before increasing injection speed, because higher melt temperature shortens relaxation time but extends cooling time. In living hinges and thin snaps, high-speed filling with 0215E can induce shear heating above the barrel set point; the resulting temperature rise can be estimated from the dimensionless Nahme number or a transient heat-transfer calculation, but published data for this specific configuration is limited. Conservative melt-flow split for multi-drop hot-runner systems should be verified by short-shot progression, not by simulation alone.
Comparative values for the 0215 series are measured on dry-as-moulded specimens conditioned to ISO 291. The producer’s typical values are reported in Table 1; they are not batch guarantees and should not replace end-use qualification.
| Property | Test method | Unit | 0215E | 0215A | 0215H |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Melt mass-flow rate | ISO 1133-1:2022 | g/10 min | 22 | 18 | 8 |
| Tensile yield stress | ISO 527-2:2012 | MPa | 43 | 45 | 46 |

| Vicat softening temperature | ISO 306/B50 | °C | 96 | 97 | 102 |
Mechanical data are generated on Type 1B tensile bars and 80 mm × 10 mm × 4 mm flexural bars; Type 1A bars under ISO 527-2 may produce slightly different yield values because gauge length and extensometer settings differ. Producer certificates of analysis generally report melt-flow rate and Izod impact as lot-release values; tensile and flexural values are typical rather than lot-release values. For statistical process control, converters should establish incoming-lot testing for melt-flow rate and moisture. A process capability study on melt-flow rate should be performed with at least 20 consecutive lots; if the Cp value falls below 1.33, downstream holding-pressure profiles should be adjusted to compensate for viscosity drift. This is particularly important for multi-cavity tools with non-uniform gate geometry, where viscosity variations are amplified into cavity-to-cavity weight variation.
Substitution of 0215A with 0215E in structural housings should be qualified on the moulded part, not on raw-material data alone. The higher melt-flow rate is achieved through controlled molecular-weight distribution adjustment, which typically reduces low-temperature notched impact and slightly lowers heat deflection. Under ISO 180/1A at 23°C, the published Izod notched impact of 20 kJ/m² is roughly 10% lower than that of 0215A. At −30°C, the same ranking generally persists, but published data for this specific configuration is limited. For enclosures with snap-fits or screw bosses, the practical risk is not tensile yield but high-strain cracking at gate locations; an instrumented puncture test under ISO 6603-2 or a falling-weight test at end-use temperature is recommended. Gloss may also differ because lower melt viscosity changes replication of textured mould surfaces. Surface gloss should be measured by ISO 2813 or ASTM D523 across at least three cavity positions, and the acceptable range should be defined from production-signed samples.
Regrind incorporation is common at 20–30 wt% if the reclaim is dry and free of fines. High regrind levels above 40 wt% reduce notched impact and increase melt-viscosity variation. The producer does not recommend mixing 0215E with flame-retarded ABS or ABS/PC blends because recycled streams may contain incompatible flame-retardant packages that alter the thermal stability of the butadiene phase. Purge after PVC or POM using polypropylene or general-purpose polystyrene; PVC releases hydrogen chloride when overheated, and POM degradation releases formaldehyde, both of which catalyse chain scission in ABS. Barrel tear-down is required if burnt material persists after purging. The grade should not be stored or processed in contact with copper or brass fittings at high temperature because copper ions can accelerate butadiene-phase oxidation.
Chemical resistance is typical of amorphous ABS. Avoid contact with ester, ketone, and chlorinated solvents; moulded-in stress creates environmental stress cracking when these fluids enter gate areas or weld lines. In applications requiring contact with citric acid or weak alkalis, ABS is generally preferred to polystyrene, but polypropylene or polycarbonate may be required depending on temperature and concentration. For UV-exposed exterior parts, 0215E requires painting or UV-stabilised colour masterbatch; unfilled ABS develops chalking and gloss loss after prolonged weathering. In applications where laser marking contrast is required, the precolored version may perform differently from natural resin; marking contrast should be validated on production-textured surfaces.
The grade is unfilled and non-flame-retarded. The standard UL 94 classification is HB at 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm. Therefore, 0215E is not selected for live-contact electrical enclosures that must pass glow-wire ignition at 650°C under IEC 60695-2-10; such applications require flame-retarded or mineral-filled grades. Electrical and electronic applications under RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II are verified by IEC 62321 methods; producer documentation normally consists of a material declaration rather than a third-party test report. For automotive interior parts, odour, fogging, and VOC requirements under VDA 270, VDA 277, or ISO 12219-4 may apply, but raw ABS is only one contributor; finished-part tests are required. Where PPAP or IATF 16949 documentation is needed, the lot-level certificate of analysis should be retained for each batch.

The practical selection logic among 0215E, 0215A, and 0215H is based on thermal load, impact loading, and filling length. 0215E is used where complex thin-wall parts require flow-length advantage and short cycles; 0215A is the default for balanced medium-flow applications; 0215H is used where continuous service temperature exceeds 85°C or where notched impact retention at −20°C is the controlling requirement. In automotive interior trim, 0215E is specified for low-load decorative panels where moulded-in stress is moderate and service temperature remains below the Vicat threshold. In small appliance housings, the grade allows multi-cavity filling at moderate clamp force, provided drying and residence time are maintained. Clamp force requirements can be estimated from part projected area and cavity-pressure data; for ABS, cavity pressure during filling typically lies between 25 MPa and 45 MPa. A part with 500 cm² projected area may therefore require 1250–2250 kN clamp force. 0215E’s higher flow may lower the actual cavity-pressure peak in thin sections, but the safety factor for flash control should not be reduced below 15% without process verification.
