Pre-drying at 80 °C for 4 h in a desiccant-bed hopper with a supply-air dew point at or below −20 °C is the first control boundary when PetroChina Jilin Jieyang ABS 0215A is converted into thin-wall appliance control-panel frames and kitchen-appliance fascia. Residual pellet moisture above 0.05 % by weight produces splay on textured surfaces and lowers notched Izod impact at gate-entry laminations; on a 1 200 kN servo-hydraulic injection moulding machine equipped with a 28 mm three-zone general-purpose screw, the melt temperature is usually maintained between 230 °C and 245 °C, while the tool surface is held at 40 °C to 60 °C to reproduce mould texturing without gas traps. The melt flow rate of 0215A is commonly reported as 20 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C/10 kg, and this level supports filling of bosses and rib patterns with nominal wall thickness down to 1.2 mm only when the gate diameter is not reduced below 1.0 mm and the injection velocity profile is stepped to prevent jetting at the sprue bush. For unattended appliance housings, glow-wire testing per IEC 60335-1 Section 30.2 is normally performed at 650 °C, but the ignition outcome is governed more by wall thickness and the absence of glass fibre than by the melt flow rate itself; 0215A should not be regarded as a glow-wire-ignition-resistant grade. Assembly operations with thread-forming screws require pilot-hole diameters above 1.9 mm for screw cores of 2.6 mm or larger because the butadiene-rubber phase in 0215A promotes stress relaxation, but excessive hoop stress from undersized bosses initiates circumferential cracking within 24 h after driving. Contact with methyl ethyl ketone, aromatic hydrocarbon-based cleaners, or aggressive citrus terpenes induces environmental stress cracking at knit lines, so the specification should prohibit these solvents in wiping and ultrasonic-cleaning steps for decorated appliqués.
Injection moulding of lower steering-column shrouds, demister vent grilles, and door trim backplates from 0215A uses the same flow capability but imposes additional constraints on heat sag and clip retention after the vehicle is parked in sunlight. The grade's published heat deflection temperature under ISO 75-2:2013 Method A at 1.8 MPa is approximately 88 °C, which means that any metal-spring clip or hot-staked bracket carrying continuous clamp stress should not be designed for continuous service above 85 °C; short-term excursions to 95 °C may be survived by unstressed surfaces only. For a multi-cavity tool producing demister vanes with a projected area of 280 cm² per cavity, the clamp-force calculation assumes a cavity pressure of 35 MPa to 40 MPa, and the machine clamp should be at least 1 200 kN after adding runner projection; this avoids flash at the parting line when the high-flow resin fills thin vane tips at the end of fill. Gate placement is shifted to the thickest boss ring rather than the vane edge, because the 20 g/10 min melt flow of 0215A allows the flow front to be balanced without an excessively high injection speed; if the flow front accelerates beyond 300 mm/s, audible jetting at the gate and surface streak defects appear. The mould temperature should be kept in the upper half of the 40 °C to 80 °C range when the part has a high-gloss visible side; this raises surface replication quality but also increases cycle time by 8 % to 12 % relative to a 40 °C tool. For electroplated door-handle escutcheons and garnish rings, 0215A can be etched in chromic acid solutions in the same manner as electroplating ABS grades, but high melt flow results in slightly lower butadiene-rubber content at the surface if the part is over-sheared, so adhesion may drop below 10 N/25 mm in tape pull tests; a low screw back pressure of 0.5 MPa and a slow screw rotation of 30 rpm are preferred to preserve rubber particle size at the surface. The compound must not be mixed with polycarbonate regrind unless the supplier has approved the alloy ratio, because the shift in heat deflection and impact balance cannot be predicted from linear blend calculations.
When wall thickness in a network-router or power-strip housing is reduced from 2.5 mm to 1.6 mm, the controlling phenomenon shifts from thermal degradation to fill pressure and gate-freeze time. With 0215A at a melt temperature of 245 °C, the apparent viscosity within a 1.6 mm wall is low enough to fill a 160 mm flow length, but weld lines formed downstream of ventilation slots retain only 60 % to 70 % of the parent tensile yield strength measured by ASTM D638-22; published data for this exact geometry is limited to supplier technical briefs rather than third-party journals. Mould-filling simulations set the injection pressure limit at 120 MPa specific pressure on the screw face, and this requires a hydraulic injection unit with a screw diameter of 28 mm or less; larger screws sacrifice response time and generate excessive shear heating in the check ring. The main operational conflict is that a high-gloss, thin-wall housing demands a tool temperature of 70 °C for surface replication, while cycle-time targets push the tool temperature down to 40 °C; this conflict is resolved by using high-frequency flow-path heating, but the grade still exhibits a processing window of only ±5 °C around 235 °C for optimal surface quality versus impact balance. If the melt temperature exceeds 260 °C, styrene-acrylonitrile degradation products create yellowing, and if it falls below 220 °C, the high-flow grade still fills but weld-line depressions become visible on the rear surface. Power-strip shells with snap-fit latches benefit from the high flow of 0215A, but the snap-fit root must be gated tangentially and stress-relieved by annealing at 70 °C for 2 h; otherwise the combination of process orientation and polybutadiene phase orientation reduces latch deflection at failure to below 2.0 mm.
Not all applications require thermal performance above the appliance level; for toy building blocks and non-motorised consumer goods, the primary compliance boundary is chemical migration rather than heat sag. 0215A is an injection moulding grade with a styrenic matrix, so any final article supplied to the European toy market must be checked against the migration limits in EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 for the specific category of toy material, and formulations containing standard processing stabilisers are normally below the organic-tin and heavy-metal thresholds, but published data for this specific configuration is limited to raw-material supplier declarations. The high melt flow of 20 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022 allows multi-cavity moulds for small bricks to fill without visible flow marks when the mould temperature is raised to 50 °C; however, the striking face of a brick should not be moulded against a cold 20 °C tool because rapid skin formation produces residual orientation that can be exposed as a blush mark after exposure to soapy water. Threaded joints or press-fit axles pressed into bosses should use an interference of 0.15 mm to 0.20 mm on diameter; interference above 0.25 mm cracks the boss after the part is dropped at 0 °C because the notched Izod impact of 0215A declines from approximately 18 kJ/m² at 23 °C to below 10 kJ/m² at 0 °C under ASTM D256-23. This drop is a known limitation for outdoor winter-use toys and for any component subjected to impact after cold storage.
Printer side covers, scanner chassis rails, and multifunction-device paper trays moulded from 0215A rely on the amorphous nature of the styrene-acrylonitrile phase for low, uniform shrinkage and predictable post-mould dimensions. The linear mould shrinkage for 0215A is commonly specified in the range 0.4 % to 0.7 %, with the lower value achieved in the flow direction and the higher value in the transverse direction; this anisotropy means that a paper tray with a 400 mm length dimension requires tooling compensation of approximately 2.8 mm across the flow path to hold flatness within 0.5 mm after 48 h. The structural weak point is the screw boss, not the flat panel. A boss with an outer diameter of 6.0 mm and a pilot hole of 2.0 mm can accept a 2.5 mm thread-forming screw only if the boss is supported by a rib of at least 1.2 mm thickness and the screw is driven at speeds below 800 rpm; higher speeds generate frictional heat that softens the boss and induces pull-out strength loss. Ultrasonic welding of 0215A to itself uses a 20 kHz horn with a trigger force of 0.2 kN, a weld time of 0.15 s to 0.25 s, and a hold time of 0.5 s when the weld line is 120 mm long; the high melt flow reduces energy-director collapse resistance, so the joint gap must be kept below 0.05 mm to avoid cold-surface welds. For printer housings that must pass shipping-drop tests, the post-mould annealing step at 70 °C for 2 h is more effective than adding wall thickness because it relaxes orientation at the gate and improves the crack-initiation threshold at the base of tall ribs. A recognised operational boundary is the lack of flame-retardant additives in standard 0215A; if the application is inside an enclosure subject to IEC 62368-1 fire-enclosure requirements, a specific FR-ABS or a different polymeric grade is required, and 0215A should not be used for parts acting as a fire-enclosure barrier.
Because 0215A is an amorphous styrenic copolymer with a butadiene-rubber impact-modifier phase, its use in electrical housings is bounded by the UL 94 horizontal burn test and by the actual internal heat generated by power components. At 3.0 mm thickness, standard 0215A is normally rated HB under UL 94, and the horizontal burn rate is typically below the 40 mm/min threshold over a 75 mm span, but the rating applies to the specific colour and thickness submitted; a black masterbatch containing conductive carbon can alter the burn rate and should be re-qualified. The more restrictive condition is heat deflection: a small form-factor power-supply enclosure with an internal ambient of 70 °C is feasible if the heat-generating component is spaced at least 10 mm from the enclosure wall, but if the surface temperature rises above 85 °C, the combination of low HDT/A and creep-induced loosening of snap-fit closures becomes unacceptable. The high melt flow of 0215A helps fill a 2.0 mm wall with a 200 mm flow path from a single edge gate, but the moulder must set the decompression stroke to 3 mm and the cushion to 4 mm to prevent nozzle drool and inconsistent shot weight; production-scale experience shows that shot-to-shot weight variation exceeds 0.15 % when the cushion is below 2 mm. Inserts such as brass blind rivet nuts can be overmoulded, but the insert should be preheated to 80 °C; cold inserts cause local skin freezing and result in a visible halo around the insert boss. The specification should also require a post-mould moisture content below 0.05 % before any painting or electroplating, because residual pellet moisture and absorbed surface water degrade adhesion of UV-curable topcoats and acrylic primers.

The acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin PetroChina Jilin Jieyang ABS 0215A is supplied by PetroChina Jilin Petrochemical Co., Ltd. from the Jieyang ABS unit. The grade is an unfilled general-purpose injection-molding terpolymer with a high-flow molecular architecture. Typical application assignments include vacuum cleaner housings, electrical enclosures, appliance trim panels, toy components, and non-airbag automotive interior parts. The pellets have a density of approximately 1.05 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1:2019. Because the material is hygroscopic, handling before melt processing must include closed storage and pre-drying; the producer ships pellets in moisture-barrier liners, but warehouse conditions and opened bags remain the principal moisture risk in high-humidity production sites.
The property profile of ABS 0215A is generated from injection-molded test specimens prepared according to ISO 294-1 and conditioned for 48 h at 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity. The table below reports representative values from published producer data and open industrial sources for general-purpose ABS 0215A; the current lot-specific certificate of analysis takes precedence for customer drawings and incoming inspection.
| Property | Test method | Representative range |
|---|---|---|
| Melt mass-flow rate, 220 °C/10 kg | ISO 1133-1:2022 | 15–20 g/10 min |
| Density, 23 °C | ISO 1183-1:2019 | 1.05 g/cm³ |
| Tensile yield stress, 50 mm/min | ISO 527-2:2012 | 44–48 MPa |
| Tensile elongation at break | ISO 527-2:2012 | 15–25 % |
| Flexural modulus | ISO 178:2019 | 2,200–2,500 MPa |
| Flexural strength | ISO 178:2019 | 62–70 MPa |
| Charpy notched impact strength, 23 °C | ISO 179-1/1eA:2010 | 18–24 kJ/m² |
| Izod notched impact strength, 23 °C | ISO 180/A:2019 | 17–23 kJ/m² |
| Vicat softening temperature, 50 N | ISO 306/B50:2014 | 94–98 °C |
| Heat deflection temperature, 0.45 MPa | ISO 75-2/B:2013 | 92–96 °C |
These values are not intended for UV-stabilized, flame-retardant, antistatic, food-contact, or colored variants. Where the part drawing imposes a minimum notched impact or heat-deflection requirement, the supplier’s guaranteed specification should be written into the purchase order. Resin should be stored in a dry, covered area below 35 °C. Extended storage above 30 °C increases the risk of pellet caking and residual monomer redistribution, and inventory rotation is recommended because aged ABS may exhibit changes in moldability if stored beyond 12 months. The producer’s shelf-life statement on the bag label is the binding storage limit.
Under ISO 1133-1:2022, the melt mass-flow rate of 0215A is reported at 220 °C with a 10 kg load. The resulting 15–20 g/10 min window places it in the high-flow segment of the producer’s ABS portfolio. This characteristic is decisive for multi-cavity hot-runner molds because it permits lower injection pressure and shorter fill time at a given wall section. High-heat grades in the same series, such as 0215H, typically exhibit lower melt flow and a Vicat softening temperature 8–12 °C higher than 0215A. Conversely, high-impact and extrusion grades may show lower MFR but higher notched impact and higher extensional melt strength. The practical consequence on a production injection press is that 0215A is selected when cycle time, fill pressure, and knit-line displacement are more important than continuous service above 90 °C or multiaxial impact resistance in cold environments.
Rheological evaluation using a twin-bore capillary rheometer under ISO 11443:2021 at 220 °C shows that the grade is pseudoplastic. Apparent viscosity generally declines from about 2 × 10² Pa·s at 100 s⁻¹ to below 1 × 10² Pa·s above 1 000 s⁻¹. This permits rapid filling of thin ribs but also reduces the ability of packing pressure to offset shrinkage in extreme flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratios above 200:1. Such parts require high injection speed and elevated mold temperature rather than excessive melt temperature alone.
For a reciprocating-screw injection-molding press with a 22–35 mm general-purpose screw and 20:1–24:1 L/D ratio, the barrel profile for 0215A is typically 190–210 °C in the feed zone, 210–230 °C in the compression zone, 220–235 °C in the metering zone, and 225–240 °C at the nozzle. Melt temperature above 250 °C should be avoided because thermo-oxidative deterioration of the butadiene rubber phase reduces notched impact strength and increases yellowness index under ASTM D6290. The shot volume should remain below 70–80 % of the available injection capacity to limit residence time. When production is interrupted, purging with a general-purpose SAN or ABS purge compound at 220 °C reduces the accumulation of degraded polymer in the check ring, screw channels, and hot-runner manifold.
| Processing variable | Typical range for ABS 0215A | Reference condition |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-drying temperature | 80–90 °C | Desiccant dryer, dewpoint below −40 °C |
| Drying time, virgin pellets | 2–4 h | Moisture target <0.05 % |
| Drying time with regrind above 20 % | 4–6 h | Verify by ISO 15512:2019 |
| Melt temperature | 200–240 °C | Nozzle reading |
| Mold temperature | 40–70 °C | Upper half for wall below 1.5 mm |
| Injection speed | 40–70 % of maximum available | Fill time 1–2 s for 2–3 mm wall |
| Packing pressure | 70–85 % of peak injection pressure | Hold time 4–8 s for 2 mm wall |
| Back pressure | 0.5–1.0 MPa | Screw recovery speed 50–100 min⁻¹ |
These ranges are production-scale starting points, not universal process conditions. Parts with flow length-to-wall-thickness ratios above 150:1 should be simulated before tool cutting using pvT and viscosity data generated under ISO 17744 and ISO 11443:2021. Production-scale compounding lines with 35–50 mm twin-screw extruders and 40:1 L/D have shown that the melt viscosity of 0215A is sensitive to adiabatic shear when masterbatch letdown ratios exceed 4 wt%. Carbon black and iron oxide pigments increase local shear heating, which can lower notched impact strength by 3–5 kJ/m² if barrel temperatures exceed 230 °C. The preferred corrective action is to reduce screw speed and back pressure rather than to lower the barrel temperature below the minimum required for pigment dispersion.
At the Jieyang site, unsealed pellets and ground runner systems absorb moisture during months when ambient relative humidity exceeds 70 %. Moisture above 0.05 % hydrolyzes the SAN phase during melting and produces volatiles that cause silver streak, gate blush, and inconsistent gloss. The resulting defect pattern is not cosmetic alone; hydrolysis reduces weld-line strength and tensile elongation in molded parts. Production cells therefore use desiccant dryers with dewpoints of −40 °C or lower and verify water content by a technique aligned with ISO 15512:2019. Regrind stored in open bins near the molding cell can reach 0.2–0.4 % moisture within 12 h in coastal conditions. If such regrind is blended above 20 wt% without an additional drying step, the lot is not acceptable for thin-wall electronic housings because property scatter becomes detectable in cold-temperature impact testing. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, but the moisture limits are standard for unfilled ABS injection grades.
Field experience on 100–150 kg/h molding cells shows that hopper residence volume should be at least 4 h of barrel consumption to maintain the moisture target. In plants without humidity-controlled warehouses, bags opened on the production floor and stored overnight may fail incoming moisture specification by the next shift. This supply-chain variable should be included in first-article qualification, not only in steady-state production.
The unfilled ABS 0215A is supplied under REACH 1907/2006/EC and RoHS 2011/65/EU as amended by (EU) 2015/863 when accompanied by the producer’s compliance declaration. It is not automatically certified for food-contact use under Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 or under 21 CFR 177.1020; users must request grade-specific documentation for kitchen appliance surfaces, food-processing housings, or potable-water contact. The resin is not positioned as a medical-grade material under ISO 10993-1, and no long-term skin-contact claim should be inferred from the standard industrial data sheet.
Chemical incompatibilities include strong oxidizing acids, ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, and chlorinated solvents, which may induce environmental stress cracking. Parts exposed to cleaning agents, automotive fluids, or adhesive systems should be tested under ISO 22088-3. Dry-blending with free amines or strong nucleophilic additives should be avoided because such additives can accelerate hydrolysis and discoloration during melt processing. These operational boundaries apply to unfilled ABS grades but are particularly relevant to 0215A when the part wall is thin and residual stress is high.
The base 0215A grade is not UV-stabilized. White or light-colored appliance housings may show unacceptable yellowness progression after 500 h of accelerated weathering under ASTM D4329 Cycle A. For near-window applications, a UV-stabilized ABS, ASA, or coating system should be qualified. Thermal aging at 80 °C under ASTM D3045 is used to screen discoloration before long-term approval. Without such testing, white parts can exceed appearance tolerances before mechanical failure occurs.
Weld-line regions in 0215A exhibit lower notched impact strength than the bulk material. In multi-gate molds or parts with flow obstructions, the weld line may reduce Charpy notched impact strength to 40–60 % of the bulk value. For appearance parts, weld-line visibility can be reduced by raising mold temperature to 60–70 °C, moving gates, or using sequential valve-gate control. For structural snap-fit retention features, tensile stress at break should be measured across the weld line by cutting a specimen perpendicular to the knit area under ISO 527-2. If a weld line cannot be removed from a high-strain region, a higher-impact ABS or a PC/ABS alloy should be considered.
Mold shrinkage for unfilled ABS 0215A is anisotropic. Typical values range from 0.4 % to 0.7 % in the flow direction and from 0.5 % to 0.8 % perpendicular to flow. Wall-thickness transitions above 2:1 can create sink marks and warpage because cooling-rate differences are not compensated by packing. Tool designers should not use a single shrinkage factor for 0215A; mold-filling simulation with pvT data is required for geometries with mixed wall thickness, particularly flat bezel-like parts with dimensional tolerance of ±0.15 mm.
The use of 0215A in sheet extrusion or coextrusion is limited by its extensional melt strength. On sheet lines with a 90 mm/33:1 single-screw extruder, the high melt flow of 0215A produces sagging before the polishing stack, making thickness control more difficult than with a dedicated extrusion ABS. Coextruded ABS/PMMA or ABS/ASA structures require a core-layer viscosity ratio near 1:1 to 1.5:1 at the die lip; 0215A may be too fluid at typical die temperatures unless the die-lip temperature is reduced below 210 °C. This is not a material defect but an application boundary. The grade is intended for injection molding, not for processes that require high melt strength under uniaxial or biaxial extension.
Compared with the producer’s high-heat 0215H grade, 0215A has a higher melt mass-flow rate and a lower Vicat softening temperature; the numeric gap depends on SAN molecular weight and residual monomer. Compared with high-impact ABS grades in the same line, 0215A typically offers lower rubber content, lower notched impact strength, better flow, and shorter cycle time. Compared with ABS/PC blends, 0215A has a lower heat-deflection temperature under load and lower low-temperature multiaxial impact resistance. Under ISO 6603-2 instrumented puncture testing, unfilled ABS tends to retain a smaller fraction of room-temperature energy absorption at −30 °C than typical ABS/PC blends. This difference should govern the choice for outdoor tool housings and cold-climate electrical enclosures.
Electroplated 0215A moldings require chromic acid etching to expose butadiene-rich surface sites before electroless nickel or copper deposition. Because the standard injection grade is not formulated specifically for electroplating, etch times may be 2–3 minutes longer than dedicated plating ABS grades, and peel adhesion under ASTM B571 may vary with mold temperature and injection speed. For bright chrome or satin-nickel exterior trims, a producer-certified plating grade or an ABS/PC alloy should be selected. If 0215A is used for non-appearance interior trim, adhesion testing should be performed on every production batch, because lot-to-lot rubber particle distribution can affect the uniformity of the etched surface.
