Application of PetroChina Jilin HDPE HC 7260

In high-cycle returnable logistics molding, PetroChina Jilin HDPE HC 7260 is processed as an unfilled injection-molding grade for collapsible distribution crates, pallet boxes, and automotive dunnage trays. The nominal melt flow rate of 7.2 g/10 min at 190 °C/2.16 kg under ISO 1133-1:2022 supports flow lengths of 600–1000 mm at wall thicknesses of 2.5–4.0 mm, provided injection speed is maintained between 150 mm/s and 300 mm/s; speeds below 100 mm/s induce visible flow hesitation at rib intersections in four-drop hot-runner tools. Compliance for load-bearing pallet boxes is evaluated under ISO 8611-1:2011 and ASTM D4169 when the units enter closed-loop automotive sequencing networks. Formulation addition is limited to 15–25 wt% clean internal regrind in sidewalls and bases, 0.5–1.0 wt% UV stabilizer masterbatch for outdoor yard storage, and 1.5–2.0 wt% carbon black masterbatch where opacity and long-term weathering are specified; regrind above 30 wt% is not introduced without revalidating notched Izod impact strength under ISO 180 and bottom-corner drop performance on the production tool. Molding is performed on accumulator-assisted hydraulic toggle presses of 3500–6000 kN clamp force; holding pressure is 60–80 MPa for 12–18 s, mold temperature is 25–40 °C, and cooling time is 18–30 s depending on nominal wall. Cavity-pressure sizing assumes 35–45 MPa at gate freeze; when end-of-fill pressure falls below 25 MPa, sink marks appear on base-grid rib intersections. Cushion is held at 3–5 mm; batch-to-batch cushion variation above ±1.5 mm shifts shot weight by 0.5–0.8% and changes foldable-crate hinge thickness. Terminal products include vented agricultural distribution crates, collapsible pallet boxes with drop gates, and returnable automotive dunnage trays with molded-in identification plates. Resin pre-drying is not required unless ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%; surface moisture is then removed at 65–70 °C for 1 h to prevent splay.

Can HC 7260 Maintain Stacking Creep Resistance in 30 L UN-Certified Pails at Wall Thickness Below 3.0 mm?

HC 7260 is used in injection-molded open-top pails and lids where UN transport packaging performance, not food migration, governs the specification. The density of 0.960 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1 provides top-load stiffness for 30 L pails, but differential shrinkage becomes the controlling process variable because the sidewall is 2.8–3.2 mm thick while the chime and handle bosses are 4.0–5.0 mm. Mold cooling circuits must hold mold-surface temperature difference between chime and sidewall mid-height to below 5 °C; otherwise ovality at the pail mouth exceeds 0.8 mm and the tear-band lid fails leakproofness testing under UN 6.1.5.4. Drop testing is performed under UN 6.1.5.3 at 1.2 m for packaging group II or 0.8 m for packaging group III; stacking is evaluated under UN 6.1.5.6 for the required storage period. Production-scale equipment includes 800–1000 t toggle presses with core-back stack tools, melt temperatures of 220–240 °C, mold temperatures of 15–25 °C, injection pressures of 90–110 MPa, and a screw compression ratio of 2.5:1 at L/D 20:1–22:1. Core-back sequencing must allow the stripper ring to demold the chime without crushing the hot sidewall; early ejection after less than 12 s cooling produces ovality above 1.0 mm. Backpressure is limited to 0.4–0.6 MPa because higher backpressure reduces melt temperature uniformity and lengthens color-change times. The formulation includes 1.5–2.5 wt% color masterbatch, 0.5–1.0 wt% UV stabilizer masterbatch for exterior storage, and 10–20 wt% internally generated regrind; when regrind exceeds 20 wt%, converters are required to verify environmental stress crack resistance under ASTM D1693-15 condition B using 100% Igepal CO-630 because lower ESCR retention is observed at higher homopolymer regrind fractions. Terminal products include UN-rated open-top pails, jerrican bodies, and tamper-evident lids for lubricating oils, water-based emulsions, and non-halogenated cleaning concentrates. HC 7260 is not specified for direct immersion in hydrocarbon fuels or concentrated oxidizing acids unless the converter performs permeation and chemical resistance trials under the applicable transport packaging instruction.

Where a converter replaces a fractional-melt HDPE with HC 7260 in injection-molded non-carbonated closures, the 7.2 g/10 min melt flow rate permits 48–96 cavity valve-gated tooling with fill times below 0.8 s and without exceeding 180 MPa injection pressure. The main process conflict is gate stringing and retained melt temperature at the gate, which is controlled by subgates of 0.8–1.2 mm diameter, mold cooling water at 10–18 °C, and cycle times of 6–12 s on high-speed accumulator injection machines. Closure production for non-carbonated liquid packaging under food-contact conditions is performed only where the converter validates the finished article against FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011; overall migration is limited to below 10 mg/dm², and organoleptic acceptance is verified on the actual cap and liner combination because migration behavior is governed by finished closure geometry rather than by resin alone. The formulation includes 1–2 wt% color masterbatch and, for torque reduction, 0.05–0.10 wt% erucamide slip additive; slip levels above 0.15 wt% cause surface bloom and interfere with hot-stamped date codes. Terminal products include tamper-evident screw caps for dairy, condiment, and household chemical bottles; HC 7260 is not selected for carbonated soft-drink closures where pressure retention and environmental stress crack resistance under ASTM D1693-15 condition B must be revalidated on the actual bridge-and-skirt geometry. Pre-drying is not normally required, but surface condensation from storage above 60% relative humidity must be removed at 65–70 °C for 1 h before processing to prevent splay.

Slit-tape hinge fatigue in collapsible agricultural crates

Collapsible agricultural crates molded from HC 7260 have an integral hinge formed by a 0.8–1.2 mm reduced-thickness web; the homopolymer grade has a lower crack-initiation threshold under repeated hinge flexing than a butene-copolymer HDPE, so converters limit hinge-cycle validation to 500–1000 flex cycles at 23 °C unless impact modification is added. Published data for HC 7260-specific hinge fatigue at sub-zero temperatures is limited; field trials on 1200 t stack-tool machines with melt temperatures of 220–240 °C, mold temperatures of 20–30 °C, and hinge injection speeds of 180–250 mm/s show that whitening appears earlier when the hinge web thickness exceeds 1.5 mm because crystalline orientation is reduced and the section cools more slowly. The formulation includes 1.0–1.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch for UV resistance, 10–15 wt% clean regrind from the same production lot, and 0.05–0.15 wt% high-molecular-weight silicone masterbatch to lower hinge friction; silicone dosage above 0.2 wt% is avoided because it produces visible surface bloom on the hinge. Direct food-contact crates must be validated under EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 and FDA 21 CFR 177.1520; cold-chain distribution is tested to ASTM D4169 distribution cycle profiles. Terminal products include vented field-harvest crates, nursery trays, cold-chain transport boxes, and foldable retail display crates. HC 7260 without impact modification is not recommended for freezer applications below -20 °C, where Charpy notched impact strength under ISO 179-1:2010 falls sharply and hinge brittleness becomes the controlling failure mode.

Direct-gated multi-cavity tools running HC 7260 in modular storage bins and ESD-sensitive warehouse trays use wall thicknesses of 2.0–3.0 mm and flow-path-to-thickness ratios not exceeding 180:1 to avoid jetting and gate blush. The main processing difference from pail molding is the use of tunnel or subgates of 1.0–1.5 mm diameter and injection speeds of 100–180 mm/s, because higher shear rates at the gate generate local melt temperatures above 240 °C and induce visible discoloration in white and light colors. Compliance for these products is driven by REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU where the bin is integrated into electrical/electronic racking, and IEC 61340-5-1 for static-dissipative bins when surface resistivity is specified between 10^6 Ω and 10^9 Ω. The formulation uses 2–3 wt% color masterbatch; for static-dissipative grades, 0.5–1.0 wt% conductive carbon masterbatch is added, but the resulting increase in melt viscosity reduces the effective melt flow rate by approximately 15–25%, requiring melt temperature compensation to 230–240 °C. Terminal products include modular drawer frames, conductive ESD storage bins, shelf dividers, and retail display risers; load-bearing shelf components thicker than 4 mm are not recommended because shrinkage of 1.5–2.0% causes sink marks at rib intersections if gas counterpressure is not used.
