Application of PetroChina Jilin ABS 0215H

PetroChina Jilin ABS 0215H enters automotive interior trim production as a general-purpose injection moulding resin whose surface reproduction and emission behaviour are assessed on a part-family basis. The applicable compliance framework begins with European End-of-Life Vehicles Directive 2000/53/EC Annex II, REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Article 33 for SVHC notification above 0.1 wt% at article level, and GB/T 30512-2014 for hazardous substance restrictions in the Chinese automotive supply chain; interior-facing grades are additionally screened through DIN 75201 fogging and VDA 270 odour testing before OEM approval. The shop-floor formulation is built from 100 phr of 0215H as the base resin, with colour masterbatch dosed at 2–4 wt% and process regrind limited to 15 wt%; impact modifiers are not routinely added because the grade already provides the specified notched Izod range for most Class B surface components, but a heat stabilizer may be introduced at 0.3–0.5 wt% only when the part family is exposed to repeated mould-sticking events or long dwell times at the upper melt-temperature limit. Downstream conversion is carried out on hydraulic or hybrid injection moulding machines with clamping force between 2,500 kN and 6,500 kN, melt temperature 220–250°C, mould temperature 40–70°C, and pre-drying at 80°C for 2–4 h until residual moisture drops below 0.05 wt%. Gates are positioned behind pillar-cover edges, inside clip towers, or along the centre-console side ledge rather than on visible grain surfaces, because direct gating on a textured surface produces a high-gloss halo that cannot be fully hidden by dry-brush or laser etching. Finished automotive parts produced from 0215H in this segment include door inner trim panels, centre console side covers, seat side shields, glove box surrounds, and A/B/C pillar cladding.

Production experience on these tools shows that a shift of 5–10°C in core insert temperature across the cavity map is enough to produce visible gloss bands in dark grey and anthracite parts, especially when the texture depth is below 25 µm. Cavity pressure sensors placed near the last fill point are used to judge whether the holding-pressure profile must be extended; if the pressure signature at switchover differs by more than 8–12 bar between shots, the part weight and shrinkage state are considered unstable for downstream welding or clipping operations. Textured surfaces with depth of 25–30 µm reproduce with consistent matte uniformity when the flow-front velocity is held between 80–150 mm/s; velocities above that range generate jetting and burn streaks at the vented edges, while velocities below that range produce blush marks and incomplete grain duplication. The operational boundary for the material is set at 250°C melt temperature and 8 min total barrel residence time; beyond these limits, yellowing starts to become visible on light cream and warm grey parts, and the melt has a higher tendency to form deposits on the back of hot-runner needle shut-offs. Material exposed to ambient air above 60% RH for more than 30 min before the hopper loader should be re-dried, since moisture uptake in box-fed regrind on a humid shift can produce splay at the part edge. Mixed post-consumer ABS is not introduced into this part family without a fresh DIN 75201 fogging series and a full mechanical-property comparison on moulded plaques, because the volatile profile and impact retention are part of the OEM release file rather than a generic resin property.

Why Does 0215H Maintain Surface Gloss in High-Volume Consumer Electronics Housings?

With mirror-polished mould cores and wall sections frequently below 2.0 mm, consumer electronics enclosures expose the melt to high shear rates and require a controlled balance between melt-flow rate and surface hardness. In this application group, the controlling chemical restrictions are RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II as amended by Commission Delegated Directive (EU) 2015/863, REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Article 33, and verification through IEC 62321 test series for homogeneous materials. The resin is processed essentially neat: 100 phr of PetroChina Jilin ABS 0215H is mixed with 1–3 wt% of a carrier-matched ABS colour masterbatch, with no filler and no plasticizer; a small amount of processing aid at 0.1–0.3 wt% is accepted only where ejection force is high or where the tool has long rib features that tend to stick. Downstream injection moulding is performed on all-electric or hybrid machines with clamp force from 1,000 kN to 4,000 kN, melt temperature 230–250°C, and mould temperature 60–80°C to preserve the mirror finish; pre-drying at 80°C for 3–4 h is used because the thin-wall filling stage magnifies any moisture-related splay. Finished component types include Wi-Fi router top covers, smart speaker enclosures, media player fascia frames, VoIP telephone shells, and power adapter lower housings.

The production bottleneck in this segment is plate-out on the polished cavity surface when masterbatch carriers contain unbounded wax or when hot-runner temperatures are run above the resin degradation threshold. Tool maintenance records show that mould release agents based on low-molecular-weight stearate migrate to the cavity side and reduce gloss after 2,000–3,000 cycles on high-gloss black parts; the corrective action is to switch to a mould release system with narrow molecular-weight distribution rather than to increase demoulding spray frequency. Gloss readings measured according to ISO 2813 on the finished housing are typically used as a process control variable, not only as a final appearance check; a drop of more than 5 GU at 60° measurement geometry on the same tool indicates that resin drying, gate freeze time, or mould temperature has drifted. The operational boundary is the upper melt-temperature limit of 250°C; beyond this point, the hot-runner necks generate carbonised deposits that create black specks in opaque and natural-tinted batches. The grade is not flame-retardant in its neat form, so the electronics enclosure must be assessed under UL 62368-1 end-product requirements and cannot rely on a resin-level V-0 classification unless the 0215H is replaced or compounded by a certified flame-retardant system.

Washing Machine Lid Frames and the Limits of Large-Area Flow Length

Flow length in washing-machine lid frames becomes a dominant constraint when wall thickness is reduced below 2.0 mm while the part area remains above 0.2 m². For an unfilled ABS flow path, production practice keeps flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratio below approximately 120:1; large-area lids therefore use multiple hot-runner valve gates that open sequentially, and the fill is staged so that the flow front from a later gate does not meet an already cooled front from an earlier gate at a visible surface. The material in this segment is formulated at 100 phr of 0215H, with external colour masterbatch at 1–2 wt% and production regrind from the same moulding cell capped at 20 wt%; higher regrind fractions increase the melt-flow rate and reduce notched Izod impact, and are not qualified without re-checking the weld-line strength near the central stiffening rib intersections. The downstream production line uses injection machines with clamping force from 6,500 kN to 12,000 kN, melt temperature 230–250°C, mould temperature 45–70°C, and holding pressure between 55–80 MPa. The processor controls barrel residence time to less than 8 min total, because a higher residence time at the upper temperature shifts the batch toward a lower viscosity that cannot be corrected by lowering screw speed alone. Regulatory compliance for the finished appliance part is evaluated under IEC 60335-1:2020 clause 30 for resistance to heat and fire, with glow-wire ignitability and flammability tested according to IEC 60695-2-11:2021; the raw material also falls under the RoHS and REACH restrictions applicable to the assembled machine. Finished component types include top-loading washer lid frames, front-loading door rings, control-panel housings, detergent dispenser surrounds, and rear service panel frames.

The melt-temperature window is held within ±5°C around the machine set point in these tools. Below the lower bound, the flow front hesitates in the deeply textured portions of the lid frame and the part shows a visible brightness variation under diffuse light; above the upper bound, the surface develops silvering near the valve gate and impact resistance in the gate area begins to drop before any global loss is visible in standard moulded plaques. Injection speed is set as a function of the flow-front area rather than as a single linear velocity; processors running lid frames with long radial flow paths maintain the screw forward movement so that the flow front is kept between 80–140 mm/s across the main surface, but the setting is reduced near the end of fill to avoid overpacking the thin rim. The primary failure mode recorded on production lines is not short shot but post-demoulding deformation: if the cooling channels do not hold the cavity surface within ±5°C, the lid frame bows along the long axis after the first thermal cycle in a washing machine. To control this, the mould is designed with separate cooling circuits for the lens window surround and the hinge boss area, and these circuits are balanced to produce a part surface temperature of 50°C or lower at demoulding. Any deviation in switchover pressure outside ±10 bar around the qualified recipe is treated as a process fault, because it shifts the internal stress profile and accelerates stress cracking around the ultrasonically welded hinge retention blocks.

Because office-machine housings carry long internal ribs and multiple snap-fit features, recycled ABS streams generated from edge trim, sprues, start-up purges, and non-conforming parts are dry-blended with virgin PetroChina Jilin ABS 0215H at a maximum of 25 wt%; above this level, the notched Izod impact value falls outside the drawing specification and the melt flow rate rises, making thin-section filling unreliable without increasing mould temperature. The chemical restrictions are identical to other electrical and electronic equipment: RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II, REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, and marking according to ISO 11469:2016 to identify the part as ABS for end-of-life sorting. The formulation in this segment is 75–80 wt% virgin 0215H, 20–25 wt% production regrind of the same grade family, 1–2 wt% carbon-black or grey masterbatch, and 0.1–0.3 wt% antioxidant only when the regrind has been thermally stressed during a prior start-up. Downstream production uses medium-to-large injection machines with clamp force between 4,000 kN and 10,000 kN, melt temperature 225–245°C, and mould temperature 40–60°C; the parts are gated through hot-runner manifolds with valve drops at internal bosses to prevent visible drop marks on the exterior. Finished product types include printer paper trays and front covers, copier document-feeder frames, monitor stand base covers, and internal card-cage brackets for office automation equipment. Because recycled material raises the viscosity variance, the processing cell monitors nozzle pressure at the changeover point and adjusts the holding-pressure profile only within the pre-qualified ±5% band; larger adjustments require a new mechanical-property check.

The operational boundary for regrind-rich batches is the lower impact limit measured on ISO 180/A notched specimens, not merely the melt-flow index. Production-line records indicate that impact retention is more sensitive to repeated extrusion history than to the physical shape of the regrind; regrind that has been dried and rerun three times degrades impact faster than a single-pass sprue fraction at the same weight percentage. A change in screw-recovery time exceeding 10% for the same shot weight is treated as a batch-to-batch alarm, since it indicates a shift in average molecular weight or moisture content that cannot be detected from the hopper sight glass. If the incoming 0215H lot is at the lower end of the supplier’s melt-flow specification, processors raise the melt temperature by no more than 5°C; higher compensation leads to part gloss variation on textured office-equipment surfaces. The recycled fraction must come from the same resin family and must not include painted parts, metallic inserts, or electroplated ABS unless the plating has been removed and the substrate re-qualified for RoHS and impact performance.

When 0215H Is Compounded with Halogen-Free Flame Retardants for Charging Equipment Housings

Neat 0215H is classed as UL 94 HB in its supplied form; charging-equipment housings that must meet UL 62368-1 or IEC 62368-1 end-product fire-enclosure requirements are therefore produced from downstream compounds rather than from the neat grade. In this application group, the raw material is used as the base resin at 78–85 wt%, with a halogen-free flame-retardant package at 15–20 wt% and an anti-dripping/stabilizer system at 1–3 wt%; published formulation data for 0215H-specific compounds is limited, so the final loading must be confirmed by laboratory compounding and UL 94 vertical-burn testing at the final wall thickness. The compliance file includes RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II, REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, and IEC 60695-2-11:2021 glow-wire testing on the finished enclosure if the product falls under unattended equipment clauses. Downstream production is a two-stage operation: twin-screw compounding on a co-rotating extruder with an L/D 44:1 screw configuration and strand pelletizing, followed by injection moulding with melt temperature 210–235°C and mould temperature 50–70°C. The compounding step must limit melt temperature to below 240°C to avoid premature degradation of the halogen-free flame-retardant system, and the screw profile is selected to disperse the FR without creating dead spots in the barrel. Finished component types include charger adapter shells, socket outlet covers, power strip surge-protector housings, USB charging-cradle frames, and battery charger enclosures for portable tools.

The critical production risk is the drop in impact resistance and melt flow caused by high loadings of halogen-free flame retardants. At the upper FR bound, the moulded compound can exhibit notched Izod values significantly below the neat 0215H and reduced weld-line strength at the pin bosses; tooling for this segment therefore uses thicker bosses and larger gate radii than neat-ABS tools to prevent cracking during screw assembly. Processors set the melt temperature as low as possible within the filling window, often 215–225°C, and monitor the compound’s melt-flow rate according to ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220°C and 10 kg before the moulding run. Batches with melt-flow values near the lower specification limit require a slower filling profile, but the holding-pressure time is extended to avoid sink marks around the prong openings. The material is not assumed to retain the neat grade’s UL 94 HB rating; a compound-specific UL 94 classification at the final part thickness is required, and the rating must be documented on the yellow card for the compound. If the FR system contains alkaline fillers or amine-based synergists, the compound should be tested for plate-out on mirror-polished mould cavities, because these species can deposit on the cavity surface and reduce gloss below the charging-product appearance standard.

Recreational and Toy Components: Heavy-Metal Migration and Thick-Section Cracking

Under EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021, ABS toy components derived from PetroChina Jilin ABS 0215H are assessed for migration of aluminium, antimony, arsenic, barium, boron, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, selenium, strontium, tin, organic tin, and zinc from accessible surfaces. The U.S. route adds ASTM F963-23 requirements for heavy metals in surface coatings and substrate migration, while CPSIA Section 108 imposes lead and phthalate limits; the supplier documentation must also address REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XVII entries 51 and 52 for phthalates in toys and childcare articles. The formulation is kept deliberately simple to avoid changing the migration profile: 100 phr of 0215H is blended with 1–2 wt% of a heavy-metal-free ABS carrier masterbatch, and no external plasticizer, no solvent-based paint, and no post-mould adhesive label is used on the resin-rich surface so that the migration kinetics are governed by the polymer matrix rather than by surface coating additives. Downstream production uses injection moulding machines with clamp force from 800 kN to 3,000 kN, melt temperature 220–240°C, and mould temperature 40–60°C; for thick-section toy structural parts with wall thickness above 4 mm, packing pressure is held until the gate freezes to prevent internal voids, because the high viscosity of the neat resin near the core can create sink marks that are unacceptable on visible play surfaces. Finished product types include construction block assemblies, toy vehicle body shells, track system connectors, play-figure display bases, and board-game storage trays.

Thick-section mouldings made from 0215H exhibit a larger linear shrinkage than thin-wall electronics parts, and the risk of gas entrapment and internal porosity increases when the mould temperature is run above 70°C. The processing window for toy parts is therefore set at 40–60°C mould surface temperature, with a lower melt temperature than glossy electronics work; this reduces the risk of excessive sink and shortens the cooling time required before demoulding. The operational boundary is the pack-and-hold profile: if holding pressure is released too early, the gate region freezes and the core cannot replenish material lost to shrinkage, creating voids that fail reliability testing under drop or torque loading. Production cells conduct a daily screw-recovery check; a shift of more than 10% in recovery time for a given shot size signals either a material lot shift or a worn non-return valve, and is investigated before parts are packed. 0215H is not assigned a food-contact or oral-contact grade, so toys that are intended for mouthing or prolonged skin contact must undergo migration testing on the finished article rather than rely on the resin certificate. Assemblies using metal inserts or electroplated surfaces must segregate the 0215H regrind from plated scrap, because metallic residues change the heavy-metal migration profile and reduce the robustness of the EN 71-3 compliance file.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

PetroChina Jilin ABS 0215H is a high-flow acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer intended for injection molding. It is not an extrusion or blow-molding grade. The melt mass-flow rate is typically reported as 18 g/10 min when measured at 220 °C under a 10 kg load according to ISO 1133-1:2022, while the density is typically 1.04 g/cm³ according to ISO 1183-1:2019. The product is positioned for thin-wall technical parts, household appliance exteriors, toy shells, and non-visible automotive interior components. The high flow index reduces injection pressure and fill time compared with general-purpose ABS grades, but it also narrows the acceptable melt-residence window and reduces low-temperature toughness relative to high-impact ABS grades.

Batch-to-batch melt flow variation on the supplier certificate of analysis is usually controlled within ±1.5 g/10 min around the nominal value. Converters operating hot-runner systems monitor this because small changes in MFR shift the fill-pressure and gate-freeze balance. The base grade does not contain an intentionally added flame retardant or UV stabilizer, so downstream property modifications depend on the masterbatch or compounding route.

What Drying and Thermal History Limits Govern 0215H?

Moisture control is the first boundary condition. Pellet surface moisture before plastication should be kept below 0.03 wt%. A desiccant dryer with a dew point no higher than -30 °C is recommended at 80 °C for 2–4 h. In plant environments above 60% relative humidity, hopper residence after drying should not exceed 30 min. Splay, silver streaks, or frothy gate regions on a polished tool typically appear when the moisture content exceeds 0.05 wt%. The melt temperature is normally controlled between 200 °C and 240 °C. At 200 °C, the high-shear zone must compensate for lower thermal energy; premature unmelted polybutadiene inclusions can appear in thick sections if screw recovery is too slow. Above 240 °C, butadiene-phase degradation leads to color drift, free-surface roughness, and loss of notched impact energy. On a 120 t injection press with a 24:1 L/D general-purpose screw, melt-contact time above 5 min at 240 °C is not recommended.

Screw configuration is also constrained. A general-purpose polyolefin screw with a shallow compression ratio near 2.0:1 can generate excessive shear in 0215H. A compression ratio of 2.2:1 to 2.4:1 with a 20:1 to 24:1 L/D is appropriate. Hydraulic back pressure is normally limited to 5–10 bar; higher back pressure raises melt temperature and promotes degradation without improving melt quality in this grade.

Mold temperature is held between 30 °C and 60 °C. The lower bound preserves cycle time; the upper bound improves knit-line strength and surface replication. In a two-cavity 1.8 mm nominal wall appliance cover, raising mold temperature from 30 °C to 50 °C increased weld-line elongation at break from approximately 8% to 12% in laboratory trials, while increasing cooling time by 3 s per cycle. Because 0215H has a higher MFR than a 12 g/10 min medium-flow ABS, injection pressure reductions of 10–20 bar hydraulic have been reported on 90–150 t machines in identical tooling. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, and tool-specific pressure should be established by short-shot study.

When Thin-Wall Tooling Demands Melt Viscosity and Flow-Length Control

Thin-wall tooling below 2.0 mm nominal wall exposes the difference between high-flow ABS and general-purpose grades. The 18 g/10 min MFR allows the melt to fill long flow paths before the frozen layer closes the flow channel. Apparent viscosity measured by capillary rheometry at 1000 s⁻¹ and 220 °C is approximately 90 Pa·s, although published data for this exact grade is limited. The practical outcome is reduced fill pressure and shorter gate-seal time in walls from 1.0 mm to 1.8 mm. Cavity pressure at fill end should be maintained between 350 bar and 550 bar, depending on gate diameter and part volume. For hot-runner tips smaller than 0.6 mm, shear heating may raise local melt temperature beyond the 240 °C ceiling even when barrel setpoints are lower.

Flow-length/wall-thickness ratios above 120:1 are generally feasible only when the gate is placed at the thickest section and when the mold temperature is held at or above 40 °C. Below 30 °C, flow marks and jetting are more likely on high-gloss surfaces. The high-flow character also reduces orientation at the frozen layer but creates greater post-filling volumetric shrinkage; packing pressure and gate freeze time therefore become dominant.

Valve-gated hot-runner systems are preferable for high-gloss thin-wall parts because direct cold sprue or tunnel gates can produce gate blush and stringing. The gate diameter should be at least 0.8 mm for a cold runner and 0.6 mm for a hot tip. Below these dimensions, shear rates can exceed 10⁵ s⁻¹ and cause butadiene-phase degradation in 0215H. In 1.0 mm wall parts, a film gate with land length of 0.8–1.0 mm and thickness of 0.6–0.8 mm helps distribute flow and reduce jetting.

Representative values are compiled from manufacturer technical datasheets and laboratory testing. These are not batch-release specifications; lot-specific values are stated on the certificate of analysis.

Flammability, Weathering, and Chemical Exposure Boundaries

The material is classified as HB at 1.5 mm under UL 94, which excludes it from applications requiring V-2, V-0, or 5VA. Flame-retardant ABS or PC/ABS should be selected when a vertical burn rating is mandatory. Uncoated 0215H is not weatherable; surface oxidation and gloss loss develop under UV exposure. In xenon-arc weathering to ISO 4892-2:2013, visible color change can exceed Delta E 3 after 500 h depending on pigment and exposure cycle. Painted or vacuum-metallized surfaces are required for exterior automotive or outdoor appliance parts.

Chemical resistance follows general ABS behavior. Dilute aqueous acids and alkalis, aliphatic hydrocarbons, and common detergent solutions are typically acceptable at ambient temperature. Ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, and some chlorinated solvents cause swelling or stress cracking, particularly when the part is under continuous stress. Environmental stress-cracking evaluation should be performed according to ISO 22088-3:2006 before approval for chemical-contact applications.

Food-contact suitability is not automatically granted for every color and lot. Migration testing under FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 and EU 10/2011 is required for the specific formulation, pigment system, and processing conditions. Color concentrates should use styrenic carriers; olefinic carriers can reduce gloss and create delamination. Masterbatch levels above 3 wt% can reduce impact and increase MFR variability, so pre-color material from the manufacturer is preferred for tight lot-to-lot consistency.

Gate Freeze Time and Packing Pressure Determine Final Part Mass in 0215H

On multi-cavity tools, 0215H is sensitive to packing conditions because its lower melt viscosity allows faster gate freeze and less pressure transmission to the cavity. Gate freeze time should be measured by short-shot and part-mass trend, not inferred from a generic ABS table. Cavity-to-cavity imbalance above 5% on an 8-cavity tool with 1.2 mm nominal wall produces visible flow marks and increases mass scatter. Packing pressure is typically set at 60–70% of injection pressure, with hold time equal to gate freeze time plus 0.2 s. Overpacking by more than 10 bar cavity pressure raises frozen-in orientation and non-uniform shrinkage.

In a 2-cavity electric kettle base mold with direct edge gates, reducing hold time from 20 s to 12 s after gate freeze shortened the cycle by 8 s without changing part mass by more than 0.2% in production trials. When mold temperature is kept below 30 °C, packing pressure cannot compensate for the frozen layer and sink marks appear at rib bosses; when mold temperature exceeds 60 °C, cycle time increases without proportional impact improvement in unfilled ABS.

Compared with other ABS grades in the same supplier family, 0215H occupies the high-flow injection segment. Its melt flow index is higher than that of general-purpose injection grades, but its low-temperature impact and thermal resistance are lower than those of high-heat or high-impact ABS. The table below positions 0215H against class-typical values, not against a single competitor grade. Grade-specific comparison should use the supplier certificate of analysis.

    Charpy notched impact at -30 °C 8 kJ/m² 7–10 kJ/m² 6–9 kJ/m² 12–18 kJ/m²
    Vicat softening temperature 96 °C 95–98 °C 102–108 °C 95–100 °C
    Heat deflection temperature at 1.80 MPa 88 °C 86–90 °C 96–104 °C 85–90 °C

The practical difference is that 0215H trades approximately 20–35% of 23 °C notched Charpy energy relative to a high-impact ABS for a 40–60% higher MFR. Against a high-heat ABS, the Vicat softening temperature of 0215H is approximately 8–12 K lower, which disqualifies it for instrument-panel cores exposed to 110 °C climate soak but is generally within the service window of appliance shells exposed to 70–80 °C.

The product should not be used for outdoor unpainted components, continuous service above 85 °C, direct contact with ketone or ester solvents, or any application requiring a V-0 rating. For such requirements, alternative grades of ABS or PC/ABS with appropriate stabilization and flame-retardant chemistry are required.
