Application of PetroChina Jilin ABS 0215B

During series-production moulding of passenger-vehicle interior subassemblies for the CN-market A/B/C segment platforms, the use of a general-purpose acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection grade—commonly designated as PetroChina Jilin Petrochemical Co. ABS 0215B—requires that pellet moisture be reduced to a residual content at or below 0.05 wt% before plastication. Drying is executed in desiccant-bed hopper dryers at 80–85 °C for 2–4 h with a drying-air dew point at or below -40 °C; failure to maintain this moisture ceiling results in silver streaking and weld-line weakness on high-gloss interior surfaces during series manufacture. The melt is processed through a three-zone reciprocating-screw injection machine with a 20:1 to 25:1 L/D ratio and a compression ratio in the range 2.2:1 to 2.7:1, with barrel temperature segments profiled from 200 °C at the feed throat to 230–245 °C at the nozzle. Mould surface temperature is maintained at 45–70 °C, which is sufficient to suppress premature skin formation and to allow flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratios up to approximately 150:1 in unfilled ABS injection moulding. Addition ratios for the 0215B grade in this segment vary by mechanical demand: for structural interior brackets and non-airbag load-bearing fascia subcomponents, the resin is used as 100 wt% virgin feedstock; for non-visible internal components such as door-handle counterweights and HVAC duct housings, up to 15 wt% of qualified post-industrial regrind is incorporated without statistically significant reduction in notched Izod impact at 23 °C as measured per ISO 180/1A. The dominant compliance burden for automotive interior parts derives from flammability and emissions rather than mechanical fracture: components produced from 0215B-based compounds must pass horizontal burn rates at or below 100 mm/min per ISO 3795 (equivalent to GB 8410), and interior-emission testing is typically specified under VDA 278 thermal desorption with TVOC and FOG limits aligned to OEM internal norms. Finished-component types observed in this downstream track include ventilation outlet housings, instrument panel end caps, door panel upper trim strips, seat-belt buckle surround mouldings, and centre console side panels—all produced on clamping units of 120–300 t with multicavity tools and hot-runner valve-gate systems to maintain gate-vestige planar tolerances under 0.3 mm. Published data for this specific 0215B configuration regarding fatigue crack growth under cyclic loading is limited; predictive substitution into dynamic load-bearing automotive structures is therefore constrained without additional OEM validation testing.

At what moisture ceiling and hold-pressure profile does 0215B retain gloss uniformity in large-area appliance panel moulding?

In white-goods and small-appliance housing manufacture, the critical processing boundary is not the melt temperature alone but the interaction among residual moisture, shear-induced temperature overshoot, and packing-phase hold pressure on large planar surfaces. ABS 0215B feedstock intended for washing-machine control-panel frames, refrigerator door-end caps, and vacuum-cleaner motor housings is pre-dried to a moisture ceiling identical to the automotive case at 0.05 wt%, yet the production-floor failure mode is not silver streaking but gloss deviation and sink marks over ribbed bosses on the cosmetic A-surface. Mould filling is carried out at a melt temperature of 220–250 °C, with injection speed staged to limit shear rates below approximately 10,000 s-1 at the gate to avoid butadiene-phase degradation that manifests as yellowing on white-tinted formulations after multiple regrind cycles. Packing pressure is set between 50% and 70% of peak injection pressure and held for 4–8 s beyond gate freeze to compensate volumetric shrinkage of 0.5–0.8% reported for unfilled ABS at these wall thicknesses. Formulation-wise, this downstream route predominantly uses 100 wt% virgin ABS 0215B with a white or grey masterbatch added at 1–3 wt%, while high-wear components such as washing-machine agitator hubs and dryer lint-filter frames may include 0.2–0.5 wt% of an external lubricant package to reduce coefficient of friction and audible squeak during part flexure. The relevant compliance anchor is the household-appliance safety standard IEC 60335-1, which requires that polycarbonate-free ABS remains within flammability class HB under IEC 60695-11-10, alongside electrical clearance distances defined by the final product category in the IEC 60335-2 series; for components sold into the EU, REACH Annex XVII entries and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II restrictions apply, although antimony-free and brominated-flame-retardant-free formulations are standard for unmodified ABS 0215B. End-product types include front-loader detergent dispenser housings, top-loader washing-machine control bezels, refrigerator egg-tray slides, vacuum-cleaner wheel housings, and air-purifier external shells with snap-fit latching features requiring tensile yield strength above 40 MPa per ISO 527-2 and notched Izod impact above 15 kJ/m² at 23 °C per ISO 180/1A. The operational boundary for this segment is that sustained contact with aggressive detergent residues at pH above 10 demands accelerated stress-crack testing per ASTM D1693; at such alkalinity the SAN-rich outer phase of ABS 0215B is susceptible to environmental stress cracking and alternative materials or coating systems must be validated before production release.

Direct-from-drier feed via enclosed pneumatic conveying at a dew point at or below -35 °C is the standard material-handling configuration in electronics enclosure moulding, where ABS 0215B serves as the housing substrate for networking, power-distribution, and consumer audio devices. The defining engineering problem in this downstream track is thin-wall fill: enclosure walls are frequently specified at 1.2–2.0 mm, which demands that the zero-shear viscosity of the grade remains low enough at 220–240 °C to permit filling distances above 120 mm without exceeding clamp-force limits of 80–200 t on the designated moulding cell. Mould-flow analysis assumes a melt volume-flow rate in the order of 18–30 cm³/10 min under ISO 1133-1 conditions of 220 °C/10 kg, but published certification for this specific 0215B designation must be confirmed against the latest PetroChina technical datasheet, since the melt flow can shift between production lots by approximately ±10% and directly affects shot-to-shot cushion stability and gate seal time. Mould temperature is split into two zones in this application: the core-side temperature is held at 40–55 °C and the cavity-side surface at 50–65 °C to prevent differential warpage in rectangular enclosures with snap-fit lids and internal PCB locating ribs. Formulation ratios differ from the appliance track: for non-flame-retardant information-technology enclosures, ABS 0215B is used at 100 wt%; for UL 94 V-0 applications such as power-supply adapters, the 0215B resin is compounded with a brominated flame-retardant system at a typical addition of 15–20 wt% with antimony trioxide synergist at 3–5 wt%, although this exact formulation must be revalidated because the mechanical property depression in the compounded material drops notched Izod impact to approximately 60–70% of the unfilled baseline. The governing compliance matrix for this sector is IEC 62368-1 (audio/video, information and communication technology equipment—safety requirements), which invokes resin flammability classification via UL 94 HB or V-0 at the minimum thickness marketed, glow-wire resistance under IEC 60695-2-11 at 650 °C for parts in contact with mains voltage, and comparative tracking index testing per IEC 60112 with a minimum requirement typically above 400 V for uninsulated electrical connections. Finished components produced in this track are broadband-router upper and lower shells, set-top-box front bezels, power-strip bodies with integrated socket apertures, Wi-Fi access-point ceiling bases, and desktop switch enclosures—all requiring that mould shrinkage be held within a tool compensation of 0.45–0.65% across the cavity pair to maintain PCB mounting features at a positional tolerance of ±0.1 mm.

Thin-wall behaviour, gate freeze timing, and cumulative dimensional tolerance in office-equipment housing moulding

Monitoring the transition from fill-control to pack-control is the central process discipline when ABS 0215B is applied as the substrate for office-equipment external components, including monitor rear covers, printer paper trays, document-scanner lids, and multifunction-device front panels. The resin is dried to 0.05 wt% moisture and processed at 225–245 °C, with a screw rotation of 60–100 rpm and back pressure of 0.5–1.5 MPa to homogenise the melt without excessive shear history. Gate freeze time in this application, computed from cavity-pressure decay curves after the switchover point, typically falls in the range of 1.5–4.0 s for a 1.0–1.5 mm direct edge gate, above which residual melt in the runner can back-flow and create sink marks on decorative A-surfaces under oblique illumination. The addition ratio in this downstream route is often 70–85 wt% ABS 0215B blended with 15–30 wt% reground sprues, runners, and rejected parts; the regrind fraction must be screened through a 45 µm mesh and dedusted to avoid black specks in high-gloss black monitor bezels. Some configurations incorporate 2–5 wt% of an inorganic pigment masterbatch formulated with a SAN carrier to maintain melt-index compatibility and colour stability under repeated processing. Dimensional control across the 600 mm span of a monitor backshell is implemented through mould shrinkage compensation at 0.5% in the flow direction and 0.6% perpendicular to flow, with tooling cuts revised after first-article inspection using a coordinate-measuring machine to a tolerance of ±0.15 mm. The compliance burden in this segment is not flammability alone but electromagnetic compatibility and environmental registration: office equipment must satisfy the European WEEE Directive 2012/19/EU marking obligations and Chinese China RoHS GB/T 26572 substance declarations, while TCO Certified or EPEAT registration requires that plastic housings exceed 25% post-consumer recycled content only in selected product classes—a constraint that ABS 0215B users must manage by sourcing certified rABS grades or by documenting chemically recycled feedstock. There is no inherent incompatibility between ABS 0215B and polycarbonate in this segment, but direct melt blending of unformulated ABS and PC without a compatibilizer is not recommended because the SAN-rich ABS phase and PC produce visible flow-instability bands on long-flow surfaces; where PC/ABS blends are specified, an ABS loading of 30–50 wt% is typical but is outside the intended processing envelope of 0215B as a sole matrix.

Compliance with toy-safety chemical requirements rather than mechanical processing defines the operational envelope when general-purpose ABS 0215B is diverted into consumer toy and leisure component moulding, where economic batch quantities and multi-cavity tooling dominate. The resin is processed at 200–230 °C melt temperature with mould temperatures held between 35–55 °C, and the screw is configured with a smear tip and check ring suited to relatively short residence times of 1.5–3.0 min in 25–50 t machines; formulation addition ratios are 100 wt% virgin ABS 0215B for structural blocks and baseplates, with organic or inorganic colour masterbatch added between 0.5–4 wt% depending on opacity requirement, and for cold-drop resistance in hardside luggage shells the moulding compound may include a butadiene-based impact modifier at 5–12 wt%, though this addition reduces tensile modulus and is compensated by increasing wall thickness from 2.0 mm to 2.5–3.0 mm in high-stress corner radii. The binding standards are EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 for migration of 19 elements and the US CPSIA Section 101 lead-in-substrate limit of 100 ppm, alongside ASTM F963-23 for mechanical hazards such as small-part release in drop tests at 1.0 m; hardside luggage faces an additional compliance layer under airline handling conditions because the moulded shell must resist crack propagation when impact occurs at or below -10 °C, a regime in which notched Izod can fall to approximately 50% of the 23 °C baseline. Finished products in this track include toy building-block baseplates, moulded suitcase front shells, handheld game-grip frames, and fitness-equipment switch housings, with the primary operational boundary being ultraviolet ageing on coloured outdoor toy components—ABS 0215B contains no hindered-amine light-stabiliser package, and outdoor service above 1 year requires the compounder to add a UV absorber at 0.2–0.5 phr and a pigment system resistant to chalking.

Balancing surface hardness, screw retention torque, and electroplating adhesion in bathroom accessory and sanitary-ware component moulding

Pre-drying to 0.04 wt% moisture is mandatory because residual water in the SAN continuous phase hydrolyses at the melt temperature of 210–235 °C and causes visual splay on high-gloss chrome finish surfaces feeding directly into ABS electroplating lines, where etch-pit density must be verified under ASTM B727 before production-line metallisation. The resin is used at 100 wt% virgin; plated parts follow the chromic-acid etch, palladium-tin activation, electroless nickel, and electrolytic copper-nickel-chromium sequence, while self-tapping screws driven into moulded bosses of 2.5–3.5 mm nominal diameter exhibit ultimate failure torques in the range of 1.5–3.0 N·m, though published data for this specific configuration is limited and production validation must occur on each tool revision using identical screw geometry. Finished parts include electric toothbrush charging-base housings, bathroom exhaust-fan grilles, toilet-seat hinge covers, soap-dispenser pump bodies, and wall-mounted towel-rail end caps; the operational boundary is that continuous immersion in hypochlorite-based cleaning agents above 60 °C triggers stress cracking in the SAN phase and is outside the validated service window. The relevant purity frameworks are REACH Annex XVII and the German LFGB for indirect skin-contact materials, with plumbing codes restricting ABS components to non-potable, non-pressurised service inside the water delivery system.

    More Introduction

PetroChina Jilin ABS 0215B is a general-purpose acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer supplied by the Jilin Petrochemical subsidiary of PetroChina. The 0215B designation identifies an injection-moulding resin within the 0215 series, with a melt-flow and notched-impact balance that places it between lower-flow, higher-toughness 0215A and higher-flow, lower-toughness 0215C grades in producer sales literature. Distributor documentation describes the product as a natural or white pellet feedstock for thin- and medium-wall enclosures, appliance housings, consumer goods, and automotive interior trim components. The material is supplied in 25 kg bags, octabins, or bulk containers depending on regional logistics. The as-supplied moisture content is normally below 0.05 %, but the material is hygroscopic after bag opening and must be redried before moulding if exposed to ambient air above 60 % relative humidity for more than 4 h.

Rheological, Mechanical, and Thermal Specification Range

The following representative ranges are compiled from distributor technical data sheets and are not batch-release limits. The producer’s certificate of analysis remains the controlling document for any commercial shipment.

The 17–23 g/10 min melt mass-flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C/10 kg is the primary rheological boundary for injection work. The reported notched Charpy values of 15–19 kJ/m² at 23 °C reflect the standard dry-as-moulded state; at 0 °C or below, the values decrease, and snap-fit or threaded boss designs should be validated with production specimens at the lower service temperature. The Vicat softening temperature of 96–100 °C under ISO 306:2022 method B50 limits continuous-use design to applications where the peak internal temperature does not exceed approximately 80 °C; higher temperatures require high-heat ABS or a different polymer family. The tensile yield stress of 40–45 MPa and flexural modulus of 2100–2400 MPa place the grade in the conventional stiffness range for general-purpose ABS, sufficient for structural ribs and screw bosses but not for metal-replacement load-bearing components.

On a conventional three-zone screw injection machine with an L/D ratio of 20:1 to 24:1 and a compression ratio of 2.2:1 to 2.6:1, barrel set-points from hopper to nozzle are commonly 200 °C, 215 °C, 225 °C, 235 °C, and 230 °C. The mould wall temperature is maintained between 40 °C and 80 °C; the higher portion of the range is used for high-gloss surfaces and weld-line strength. Injection velocities of 100–150 mm/s and hydraulic injection pressures of 60–120 MPa are common for wall thicknesses of 2.0–3.0 mm. Hold pressure is typically set at 50–70 % of injection peak pressure for 2–5 s, depending on gate freeze time. Desiccant drying at 80–90 °C for 2–4 h with a dew point of −30 °C or lower is required after open storage. Residual moisture above 0.05 % generates silver streaks, gate blush, and reduced notched impact because steam hydrolyzes the elastomer phase. Melt temperatures above 250 °C accelerate butadiene-phase oxidation and cause yellowing and loss of toughness; cumulative residence times in the barrel should not exceed 8 min at shot weights below 60 % of the plasticizing capacity. When purging, a general-purpose ABS or acrylic-based purging compound is preferred over high-temperature polycarbonate purges that may require barrel temperatures above the ABS degradation threshold.

Reground sprues and runners are commonly incorporated at 10–20 % by weight. The use of regrind above 20 % increases variability in notched impact and melt mass-flow rate because the butadiene phase accumulates thermal history. If a moulder uses a closed-loop recycling stream on a production cell, the regrind must be dried under the same conditions as virgin pellets, because the enlarged surface area of hot regrind absorbs moisture more rapidly. At 50 % regrind, published results for general-purpose ABS often show a notched impact reduction of 10–15 %; for 0215B, production qualification should include injection-moulded ISO 179-1 specimens from a multicavity tool rather than relying solely on virgin-pellet data.

How Does 0215B Differ From Adjacent Jilin ABS Grades?

The primary difference between 0215B and adjacent 0215 series grades is the trade-off between melt mass-flow rate and ambient-temperature notched impact. In producer literature, 0215A is described as the lower-flow, higher-impact member of the series; 0215C is described as the higher-flow, lower-impact member. 0215B is specified when 0215A short-shots in thin-wall or long-flow tools but 0215C would reduce drop-impact or screw-boss toughness below the component requirement. The melt mass-flow rate difference between adjacent series grades is generally in the range of 3–8 g/10 min depending on the production campaign and the test condition of 220 °C/10 kg. The corresponding notched Charpy impact difference in published data is commonly 2–4 kJ/m² at 23 °C.

Compared with high-impact ABS grades outside the 0215 series, 0215B shows lower notched Charpy impact and is not selected for applications requiring values above 20 kJ/m² at 23 °C. Compared with heat-resistant ABS grades, the Vicat B50 value is 8–12 °C lower, making 0215B unsuitable for continuous service above approximately 80 °C or intermittent exposure above 90 °C where dimensional stability under load is specified. Compared with flame-retardant ABS compounds, 0215B has no brominated flame-retardant package and is generally classified as UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm; it is not appropriate where UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm is required. Compared with extrusion-grade ABS, the lower melt viscosity and lower melt strength of 0215B make it unsuitable for profile or sheet extrusion where sag resistance and melt tension are controlling variables.

Thin-wall telecommunication enclosures, power adapters, and appliance control panels frequently require flow-path lengths of 200–300 mm at wall thicknesses below 2.5 mm. On a 120-tonne hydraulic injection machine with a standard ABS screw, moulders have used 0215B with a hopper-to-nozzle profile of 200/220/230/240/235 °C, a mould temperature of 60–70 °C, and injection velocity of 120–160 mm/s to fill such components without excessive shear-induced splay. In production-scale runs, short shots are commonly traced to insufficient venting, gate diameters below 0.8 mm, or hold pressures below 40 MPa rather than to the inherent melt-flow of the B grade. Weld-line zones in multi-gated tools reduce notched Charpy impact by 15–30 % relative to unwelded specimens; when weld strength is a release criterion, ISO 179-1/1eA specimens cut from the weld zone are used. Published data for this exact flow-path configuration is limited; processors should establish confirmation runs on the production tool.

When a Production Tool Has Multiple Gates and Variable Flow Paths

When a production tool has multiple gates and unbalanced flow paths, the intermediate melt-flow of 0215B reduces gas traps and flow-front hesitation compared with very high-flow ABS but does not eliminate the need for runner balancing. In hot-runner systems with valve gates, sequential opening is preferred over simultaneous opening for weld-line strength and air displacement. The grade exhibits pseudoplastic shear sensitivity similar to general-purpose ABS; apparent viscosity decreases with increasing shear rate, so filling thin sections below 2.0 mm requires injection-rate profiling rather than excessive melt temperature. Pressure-limited machines should maintain actual injection pressure below 140 MPa to avoid flash and plate deflection; if the required pressure exceeds this, gate and runner diameter should be increased rather than selecting a higher-flow ABS grade without validation.

The processing window is bounded on the low-temperature side by melt front solidification and visible flow marks, and on the high-temperature side by yellowing and butadiene phase degradation. The practical melt-temperature window for 0215B is 210–250 °C. At melt temperatures below 210 °C, internal stress and cold-gate delamination increase; at melt temperatures above 250 °C, reduction in notched impact and discoloration become detectable within 5–8 min of residence. The recommended temperature range for a new tool validation is 220–240 °C. Substitution of 0215B for PC/ABS in low-voltage enclosures is not supported by thermal or impact data; PC/ABS grades typically exhibit Vicat B50 values above 110 °C and notched Charpy impact above 30 kJ/m².

For electrical enclosure use, the grade is not antistatic or electrostatic-dissipative. Volume resistivity under IEC 62631-3-1 is typically 10¹⁵–10¹⁶ Ω·cm, and surface resistivity is commonly 10¹⁴–10¹⁵ Ω. Where static decay or conductive surfaces are specified, a dedicated antistatic or carbon-filled ABS compound is required. Painting and plating adhesion are influenced by the stabilizer and lubricant package. Flame or plasma pretreatment is used before chrome plating; modern plating lines for ABS operate with chromium-free pretreatments under REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 and the End-of-Life Vehicles Directive.

Procurement specifications for this unmodified grade normally require producer declarations rather than direct section certificates. The following compliance checklist summarizes the standard designations relevant to technical acceptance. None of these entries should be read as a substitute for batch-specific documentation.

The unmodified 0215B grade contains processing antioxidants and lubricants but no halogenated flame retardants, no phthalate plasticizers, and no intentionally added heavy metals. RoHS verification is normally performed by IEC 62321 series screening on a submitted batch when the customer’s component-level exemption status requires documentation. For food-contact or medical applications, the grade is not automatically approved; specific migration testing under simulated foods is required because butadiene-derived monomers and processing additives may have regulatory limits. Storage stability is best maintained at temperatures below 40 °C and relative humidity below 60 %; material stored for more than 6 months should be re-evaluated for melt mass-flow rate and notched impact before production release.
