PetroChina Daqing UH060P, with a viscosity-average molecular weight on the order of 6.0×106 g/mol, enters gel-spun filament production as a virgin powder requiring complete dissolution before screen filtration. The powder is suspended in decalin or a refined paraffin oil fraction at a concentration of 8–12 wt%; antioxidant dosing is limited to 0.2–0.5 wt% of the polymer mass to reduce spinline residues. A jacketed dissolving vessel with a high-torque agitator maintains a temperature of 130–180°C, after which the solution passes through a 20 μm screen pack and is metered by a gear pump into a single-screw extruder with an L/D 30:1 barrier screw. The spinneret holes are sized between 0.5 mm and 1.0 mm, and quench water is held at 10–20°C. Gel filaments are washed counter-currently in n-hexane and drawn in two stages at 120–150°C to a total draw ratio of 45:1 to 60:1. Single-filament tenacity of UHMWPE gel-spun yarn in this molecular weight class, measured under ISO 5079:2020, commonly falls between 3.0 GPa and 3.8 GPa, with a titre of 0.8–2.2 dtex. When the total draw ratio exceeds 60:1, laser diameter inspection records fault CV values above 3.5% on lines where undissolved microgel has passed through the screen pack. The yarn is converted into cut-resistant textile structures assessed under EN 388:2016+A1:2018 and into ballistic panel products tested to NIJ 0101.06; published data for UH060P lot-to-lot tensile distribution under these ballistic protocols is limited.
In the wet process for lithium-ion battery separator film, UH060P is compounded with a high-purity paraffin oil plasticizer in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder; the high molecular weight reduces the maximum useful polymer content in the castable dope. A polymer-to-oil ratio of 20:80 to 35:65 by weight is typically used when the target final film thickness is 12–25 μm. Barrel temperatures are kept between 180°C and 240°C, and the melt is cast through a T-die onto a temperature-controlled chill roll at 20–40°C. The gel film is then stretched in machine direction and transverse direction before the oil is extracted by methylene chloride or n-hexane. Porosity after extraction and biaxial stretching, measured by mercury intrusion under ISO 15901-1:2016, falls in the range of 35–45 vol%. Air permeability by Gurley method under JIS P8117 is commonly 200–400 s/100 mL at 20 μm thickness. If extraction is too rapid, cavities left by the oil form collapsed surface channels and machine-direction pinholes; production lines therefore limit solvent temperature to 25–40°C and control residual oil content below 0.5 wt% before the final heat-setting step at 115–130°C. Pinch roll speed mismatch above 1% between the extraction bath and the transverse-direction stenter produces transverse striae and local thickness variation. Tensile strength of the finished separator is evaluated under ASTM D882-18; machine-direction values for equivalent wet-process UHMWPE separator film typically fall between 120 MPa and 180 MPa, while published values specific to UH060P-based film are limited.
In ram extrusion, the practical processing envelope for UH060P differs from lower-viscosity polyethylene grades because the material remains essentially non-flowing above its crystalline melting point and cannot be plasticated by a rotating screw. The powder is filled into the barrel of a hydraulic ram extruder, consolidated at 50–150 MPa, and heated through the barrel wall to a forming temperature of 180–220°C before the reciprocating ram pushes the coagulated plug through a die land with a length-to-diameter ratio of 15:1 to 25:1. When the forming temperature falls below 180°C, intra-powder fusion is incomplete and the extruded profile exhibits transverse weld lines detectable by tensile testing under ISO 527-2:2012. Above 220°C, oxidative chain scission begins to generate low-molecular-weight species, and the extrudate shows amber discoloration. Output speed is limited to 50–120 mm/min on standard lines; oversized profiles require lower ram speeds to keep die back-pressure below the hydraulic relief setting. Wear-resistant profiles, guide rails, chain guides, star wheels, and marine fender pads are produced from this route. Dry-sand rubber-wheel wear testing under ASTM G65-16 is conducted on finished machined samples; the grade datasheet does not publish a UH060P-specific volume loss, so acceptance values must be established against a reference HDPE under identical test procedure B conditions on the same machine. Impact resistance is assessed under ISO 179-1 Charpy, where UHMWPE grades generally show no break at 23°C. Neat UH060P is designated under ISO 11542-1, and the relevant moulding and extrusion specification is ASTM D4020.
UH060P powder is dry-blended with classified fractions to control pore size in sintered filtration elements. The powder is packed into metal moulds and heated in a forced-air sintering oven at 190–210°C under a controlled clamping pressure of 5–10 MPa. When the sintering pressure exceeds 10 MPa, the inter-particle pores collapse preferentially at the centre of thick sections, producing core voids and a density gradient that is measurable by micro-CT or by differential section density under ISO 1183-1:2019. Sieved fractions between 100 μm and 300 μm yield porous plates and tubes with a mean flow pore diameter of 20–80 μm, depending on the particle size distribution. Bubble point testing under ASTM F316 provides a maximum pore size check before assembly into filter housings. The sintered parts retain chemical resistance in dilute acids, alkalis, and saline media when tested under ISO 175:2010, but continuous exposure above 80°C under mechanical load may accelerate creep. No published multi-pass filtration efficiency curve for UH060P sintered media under ISO 16889 is available in the public grade documentation, so beta-ratio claims must be generated on the finished filter element rather than assumed from resin type. End products include pneumatic silencer discs, water treatment aeration stones, and liquid filtration plates.
UH060P is sometimes used as an abrasion-resistance modifier for HDPE-based injection-moulded conveyor components and pallets when the final part does not require continuous high-load wear. The UH060P powder is first compounded into a masterbatch at 10–15 wt% in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with high-shear kneading blocks, because higher loadings create unmelted gels that block the screen changer and produce surface pitting. The masterbatch is then let down to 3–8 wt% UH060P in the final moulding compound. A compounding line with a screen changer fitted with 80 mesh or finer filters is used to remove fish-eye gels, but a rapid rise in screen pressure indicates incomplete dispersion. Injection moulding is performed at barrel temperatures of 190–230°C and a back pressure of 6–12 bar; the high-viscosity domains survive plastication, and weld lines in injection-moulded parts display reduced elongation at break under ISO 527-2:2012 when the UH060P content exceeds 8 wt%. Melt flow rate of the blend is evaluated under ASTM D1238-20 at 190°C/21.6 kg, because neat UH060P does not flow at 2.16 kg and the value contains no useful information. The approach is therefore restricted to thick-wall parts such as pallet feet, wear strips on returnable logistics containers, and guide shoes.
Because compression moulding bypasses the gel-spinning and ram-extrusion constraints, it is used for thick stock shapes from UH060P powder that cannot be produced economically by other routes. Powder exposed to relative humidity above 60% is pre-dried at 90–100°C for 2–4 h before charging to avoid steam-generated porosity. The powder is cold-compacted in a hydraulic press at 20–30 MPa, then heated under pressure to 190–210°C for 10–15 min per mm of sheet thickness, followed by slow cooling at 5–10°C/h to reduce frozen-in thermal stress. Mould release agents are avoided where food-contact compliance under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 or EU 10/2011 is required, although UH060P as supplied is not accompanied by a food-contact compliance declaration in the public grade documentation. Plates with thickness from 10 mm to 120 mm are machined into chute liners, silo discharge blocks, chain tensioners, and pump wear rings. The compression-moulded stock is tested for density under ISO 1183-1:2019 and tensile properties under ISO 527-2:2012 on specimens cut according to ISO 2818. A documented limitation is oxygen diffusion on the plate surface during long heating cycles; discoloured surface layers from 0.2 mm to 1.0 mm may require machining removal before service. Published data specific to UH060P compression-moulded crystallinity and residual stress are limited; therefore final part annealing and dimensional stability trials are required for tight-tolerance applications.
