Application of PetroChina Daqing HDPE QL585P

What Limits Short Shot Frequency Below 0.5 mm Wall Thickness in QL585P Dairy Tub Moulding?

Thin-wall food container conversion exposes PetroChina Daqing HDPE QL585P to a process conflict between melt flow length and organoleptic stability. When cavity wall thickness drops below 0.50 mm and flow path exceeds 100 mm, the melt front temperature decays rapidly in a cold runner mold; injection velocity below 180 mm/s generates flow lines and short shots, while velocity above 320 mm/s can increase shear heating at the gate to the point where low-molecular-weight oxidation products exceed the sensing threshold for packaged dairy products. Compliance in this sector is anchored to EU Regulation 10/2011 Annex I with an overall migration limit of 10 mg/dm², FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 for polyolefins under aqueous, acidic and fatty food simulants, GB 4806.7-2016 for domestic China distribution, and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XVII for restricted pigments. Formulation addition ratios for dairy tub conversion are typically 100 wt% QL585P plus 2.0–4.0 wt% white titanium dioxide/polyethylene carrier masterbatch, 0.05–0.10 wt% of a non-ester slip/antiblock package, and 0.03–0.08 wt% of a food-contact-grade acid scavenger; the masterbatch carrier must be matched to the melt index of QL585P to prevent segregation in the screw root. Production equipment is normally a 250–400 t toggle-clamp machine with an accumulator-assisted hydraulic unit or electric screw drive running melt temperature 200–225°C, mold temperature 20–35°C, injection pressure 90–120 MPa, hold pressure 55–75 MPa, and back pressure 4–8 MPa. Valve-gated hot runners with 0.8–1.2 mm gate diameters are preferred over open sprue bushing feeds to limit gate freeze-off variability. Core and cavity steel is S136 ESR or 1.2738 HH with vent depths 0.015–0.02 mm at end of flow; vents deeper than 0.03 mm produce flash in thin-wall sections. Terminal products include 200–500 mL dairy tubs, 500–1000 mL delicatessen containers, and 750–1200 mL rectangular takeaway trays with wall thickness 0.38–0.65 mm.

The frozen layer kinetics of thin-wall QL585P define the pack-pressure window. At wall thickness 0.45 mm, gate freeze occurs within 0.6–1.0 s after screw transfer; hold pressure applied later than this cannot compensate for volumetric shrinkage in the base. Mold temperature fluctuation above ±3°C across the cavity shifts part weight by 0.30–0.50%, which produces visible sink marks at boss features and side-wall ripple. The process alarm band is therefore narrower than general HDPE injection: melt temperature variation should be kept within ±5°C, and injection velocity variation within ±10 mm/s. Hot runner temperature control via dual-zone PID with thermocouple placement 5 mm from the gate land is the preferred configuration; open manifold systems without zone trim can create flow imbalance above 4%, causing flash on one cavity and short shot on the opposite cavity. Screw geometry is also relevant: a 20:1 L/D three-zone screw with a check ring and a compression ratio of 2.5–3.0:1 provides sufficient plasticating without excessive residence time. Because producer-published capillary rheometry data for QL585P at high shear rates is limited, processors should generate curves at 190°C and 230°C across shear rates 100–1000 s⁻¹ before tool hardening; lot-to-lot melt index variation can shift short-shot thresholds by 6–8°C.

Closure development for QL585P is limited to non-carbonated water and dry food closures where the formulation addition ratio is 0.8–2.5 wt% low-migration masterbatch plus 0.03–0.08 wt% food-contact lubricant, the relevant compliance anchors are FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU 10/2011 with organoleptic verification under EN 1622, and the downstream process uses 48–96-cavity injection tools at 200–235°C melt temperature producing 28 mm PCO 1881, 38 mm dairy and 55 mm dry food jar closures, whereas carbonated soft drink caps are excluded without ASTM D1693 ESCR validation because thread root stress cracking is the failure limit.

    When 25 L Open-Head Pail Production Introduces 30 wt% Post-Industrial Regrind into the QL585P Melt Stream

The shift from virgin pellet to a compounded melt containing 30 wt% of in-house pail regrind alters the melt elasticity and pack stage behavior of QL585P. Regrind particles with a lower bulk density than pellets enter the feed throat unevenly, causing screw torque fluctuation and melt pressure ripple in the metering zone; the resulting weight variation in a 1.1 kg pail can exceed ±0.8% unless the regrind is blended offline before hopper loading. The formulation addition ratio for industrial pails is therefore 70 wt% QL585P virgin, 30 wt% clean post-industrial regrind, plus 1.5–3.0 wt% carbon black or UV masterbatch and 0.05–0.15 wt% of a processing stabilizer, with the exact carbon black loading adjusted to maintain weld line strength after outdoor weathering. Compliance is anchored to UN dangerous goods packaging standards for open-head plastics drums and pails: the 1H2 open-head plastics drum category under ADR/RID/IMDG Code, with design type testing including drop height at 1.2 m after conditioning at −18°C for liquid-filled pails, leakproofness, hydraulic pressure at 100 kPa for 30 min, and stacking at 40°C for 28 days.

The injection stage in pail production is not the primary cycle time driver; the pack and cooling stages dominate because the thick flange and sidewall must be solidified without gate stringing. A two-stage pack profile of 70 MPa for 5 s followed by 50 MPa for 8 s limits sink at the handle boss while preventing overpacking at the gate. Injection melt temperature upper limit is 230°C; above this, the post-industrial regrind fraction can oxidize and the odor profile shifts. Mold temperature is kept at 20–35°C with cooling water at 15–20°C using baffle inserts in the flange ring; a cooling time below 25 s can cause wall buckling during ejection, while above 40 s energy per unit exceeds the line target. Post-mould air cooling on a 12-station rotary table removes residual heat from the base insert; without this station, stack deformation after 48 h can exceed 2.5 mm under a 400 kg top load. Terminal products include 5 L, 10 L, 20 L, and 25 L open-head pails for water-based paints, adhesives, lubricant greases, and dry food powders; closed-head 1H1 formats may require a different weld-line strategy because the handle insert disrupts the flow front around the bung boss. Regrind above 30 wt% is not recommended without melt flow ratio testing per ISO 1133-1:2022 and impact testing per ISO 179-1:2010.

Logistics crate conversion with QL585P is dominated by low-temperature impact retention and shrinkage anisotropy across the long axis of a 600 mm × 400 mm ventilated crate. The material is normally formulated with 1.5–3.5 wt% of a polyethylene-carrier carbon black masterbatch and 0.2–0.8 wt% of a hindered amine light stabilizer masterbatch when the crate is used in outdoor agricultural collection; where indoor closed-loop distribution is the only duty, pigment loading can be reduced to 0.5–1.5 wt% to minimize viscosity shift. For impact-critical cold storage, 4.0–8.0 wt% of an EPDM or metallocene plastomer modifier may be added, but only after verifying that the modifier does not reduce the in-mold flow length of QL585P below 70% of the virgin value at 210°C. Standards for logistics crates are less food-contact driven and more mechanical: tensile yield per ISO 527-2:2012, notched Charpy impact per ISO 179-1:2010 at −20°C, and top-load/deformation under ISO 12048:1994 for complete, filled transport packages; for pallet boxes, ISO 8611-1:2011 applies if the crate base is pallet-footed. RoHS 2011/65/EU applies only when the crate is integrated into an electrical appliance or white-goods transport system; REACH Annex XVII restricts heavy metal colorants. Pre-drying is not required when internal moisture is below 0.02 wt%; if outdoor bulk storage exceeds 60% relative humidity, surface moisture must be removed by a dry-air hopper at 60–70°C for 1–2 h. Processing on a 500–800 t clamp force machine with a 1.5–3.0 kg shot weight uses melt temperature 210–240°C, mold temperature 20–30°C, injection pressure 90–130 MPa, and a two-stage packing profile with 80 MPa for 6 s and 55 MPa for 10 s. Because the long sidewall of a crate is 550–600 mm, gate placement is normally a single submarine or banana gate at the base center or two side gates with a sequential valve to reduce weld line formation; the mold is cooled by a central water manifold with coolant temperature 12–18°C to shorten cycle time to 28–38 s. Terminal products include ventilated fruit and vegetable crates, nestable general-purpose logistics boxes, 1200 × 1000 mm pallet bases with interlocking legs, and collapsible warehouse boxes with hinge inserts. Outdoor-grade crates for unrefrigerated transport require an additional UV weathering test per ISO 4892-2:2013 for a minimum of 1000 h when specified; indoor crates are not subjected to this certification.

Household Article Warpage Control under EN 71-3 Migration Limits and ISO 8124-1 Small-Part Geometry

HDPE QL585P enters the domestic article market only where the converter controls three simultaneous variables: pigment migration, sink-mark depth at wall section changes, and post-mould part flatness. The formulation addition ratio is typically 1.0–3.0 wt% of a high-opacity white or pastel masterbatch, 0.05–0.15 wt% of a nucleating agent to suppress shrinkage anisotropy, and 0.03–0.10 wt% of a food-grade acid scavenger; for toy-grade applications the masterbatch must be selected from pigments with low heavy-metal migration, not merely low total metal content. Compliance is governed by EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 for the migration of 19 elements from toy materials, with limits in mg/kg for Category I, II, and III materials; ISO 8124-1:2018 mechanical small-part hazard limits for toys intended for children under 36 months; FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 for food-contact storage items; and GB 4806.7-2016 for domestic food-contact use. Articles intended for prolonged skin contact must also meet REACH Annex XVII entry 43 restrictions on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Processing on a 200–400 t injection machine with a 40–70 mm screw uses melt temperature 195–220°C, mold temperature 18–30°C, injection speed 80–150 mm/s, and pack pressure 50–70 MPa for 5–10 s. Gate placement is the dominant warpage lever: for a 350 mm × 250 mm drawer organizer, a single edge gate produces a flatness deviation above 2.0 mm, while a four-point or film gate layout around a central flow leader reduces deviation to below 0.8 mm. Cooling time for 2.0–3.0 mm walls is 12–20 s; ejection temperature above 75°C leads to post-mould bowing under the weight of stacked parts. Terminal products include stackable kitchen organisers, cutlery trays, refrigerator bins, toy storage boxes, and non-food household containers. Toys intended for water play are not assigned to QL585P if the mould contains internal stress concentration at weld lines because repeated thermal cycling in 55°C water can accelerate environmental stress crack development.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

PetroChina Daqing HDPE QL585P is a high-density polyethylene pressure pipe compound supplied as black pellets. The grade is designated for pipe extrusion and related profile applications where a PE100 hydrostatic design basis is required. Under ISO 12162, QL585P is classified as PE100, corresponding to a minimum required strength of 10 MPa at 20 °C derived from ISO 9080 long-term hydrostatic stress regression. The finished compound contains carbon black in the nominal range of 2.0–2.5 % by mass for ultraviolet resistance, which differentiates it from natural or non-black pipe grades and from general-purpose Daqing HDPE extrusion products. The high molecular mass and bimodal molecular weight distribution support slow-crack-growth resistance, but they also impose specific extrusion constraints on screw configuration and melt temperature control.

Product Nomenclature, Published Datasheet Values, and Classification

The product identifier QL585P denotes a high-density polyethylene pipe-grade compound from PetroChina Daqing Refining & Chemicals Company. The suffix P indicates pipe or pressure application; the numeric segment 585 is internal grade coding and does not directly state melt index or density. Datasheet-level lot data should be verified against the manufacturer’s certificate of analysis, because compound specifications are subject to refinery-side quality plans. Typical values are listed in Table 1.

Property Test method Unit Typical value
    Melt mass-flow rate at 190 °C and 5 kg ISO 1133-1 g/10 min 0.23
    Density at 23 °C ISO 1183-1 g/cm³ 0.958
Tensile stress at yield, 50 mm/min ISO 527-2 MPa 23
Tensile strain at break ISO 527-2 % >600
Flexural modulus ISO 178 MPa 900
    Charpy notched impact strength at 23 °C ISO 179-1 kJ/m² 26
Oxidation induction time at 210 °C ISO 11357-6 min >20
    Carbon black content ISO 6964 % 2.0–2.5

The values in Table 1 are batch-typical values and should not be interpreted as release limits unless specifically stated in a supply contract. For compliance-critical applications, production lots are tested for melt mass-flow rate, density, carbon black content, oxidation induction time, and hydrostatic strength; mechanical properties are monitored as part of the manufacturer’s quality plan. The 0.23 g/10 min MFR value places QL585P at the low-flow end of the HDPE product range and alerts processors to high melt pressure and torque during extrusion.

How Does Slow Crack Growth Resistance Distinguish QL585P from Conventional HDPE?

Conventional unimodal HDPE grades used in crates, rope, or monolayer film are often optimized for either processability or tensile stiffness, but they do not necessarily carry a long-term hydrostatic design basis for pressure pipe. QL585P is formulated for slow crack growth resistance, measured in pipe form by ISO 13479, and for resistance to rapid crack propagation under ISO 13477. The PE100 rating derives from ISO 9080 regression analysis at 20 °C and confirms a minimum required strength of 10 MPa after 50 years.

The practical consequence is wall-thickness reduction at a fixed pressure rating relative to PE80 compounds with an MRS of 8 MPa. In buried water and gas distribution networks, conversion from PE80 to PE100 can reduce material consumption per linear metre and may improve hydraulic diameter at unchanged outside diameter. However, the improvement in slow-crack-growth resistance is obtained through higher molecular weight and a controlled comonomer distribution, which narrows the extrusion processing window compared with lower-viscosity HDPE grades.

Pressure pipe extrusion trials show that QL585P behaves predictably on single-screw extruders having a grooved feed bushing and a barrier screw. The recommended melt temperature range is 190–220 °C; barrel profile from feed to metering is typically 180–210 °C, and die temperature is held at 200–220 °C. The feed-zone temperature should remain between 30 °C and 60 °C to preserve solids-conveying force. If feed-zone temperature rises above 70 °C, pre-melting reduces feeding efficiency and can produce surge.

When Grooved-Feed Pipe Extrusion Places a High-Molecular-Weight Melt Under Shear

On production-scale grooved-feed extruders with L/D 30:1 to 36:1, melt pressure at the die can range from 20 MPa to 35 MPa depending on pipe diameter, line speed, and die land length. Screen packs of 80/100/80 mesh are commonly used to trap agglomerates; finer packs raise head pressure without proportional homogenization benefit. Melt temperature should not exceed 230 °C. Sustained residence above 230 °C shortens oxidative induction time and may create carbonyl species that degrade long-term hydrostatic performance. If surface moisture exceeds 300 ppm after open storage or condensation, pre-drying at 80 °C for 4 h in a desiccant dryer is recommended; water vapor causes splay and surface roughness, and in thicker pipe walls it contributes to internal voids.

Because of its high molecular weight, the onset of melt fracture in QL585P occurs at lower die shear rates than in conventional injection-molding or film grades. Die land shear rates above 1,000 s⁻¹ may generate sharkskin on the outer pipe surface if the die temperature is below 200 °C. Raising die temperature to 210–220 °C and reducing line speed are standard corrections, but both actions alter cooling length and wall-thickness control. The material is not an injection-molding grade; its low MFR and high molecular weight cause high injection fill pressures and slow cycle times in complex moulds.

Carbon Black Dispersion, Hydrostatic Design Basis, and Compliance Marking

As a black pipe compound, QL585P requires uniform carbon black dispersion to avoid stress concentrations that initiate slow crack growth. Carbon black content and dispersion are checked according to ISO 6964 and ISO 18553; dispersion ratings larger than 3 are considered inadequate for pressure pipe service. For water supply, compound performance is evaluated in pipe systems under ISO 4427-2; for gas distribution, ISO 4437-1 provides the reference testing framework. In Chinese installations, conformance to GB/T 13663.1-2017 and GB 15558.1-2015 is specified for polyethylene water and gas pipes respectively. Organoleptic and migration requirements for potable water contact should be verified for the specific production lot, because regulatory certifications vary by campaign and export market.

Test or application Standard or code Controlled parameter
    Hydrostatic design basis ISO 9080/ISO 12162 MRS 10 MPa at 20 °C
Notched pipe slow crack growth ISO 13479 Time to failure at 80 °C and 4.6 MPa
Rapid crack propagation ISO 13477 Critical pressure at 0 °C
    Carbon black content and dispersion ISO 6964/ISO 18553 2.0–2.5 %; dispersion grade ≤ 3
    Oxidation induction time ISO 11357-6 ≥ 20 min at 210 °C
Water pipe system ISO 4427-2/GB/T 13663.1-2017 Compound suitability
Gas pipe system ISO 4437-1/GB 15558.1-2015 Compound suitability

Operational differences from other Daqing HDPE products are significant. Compared with Daqing HDPE 5000S, a general-purpose extrusion resin with higher MFR used in monofilament and small profiles, QL585P has a much lower MFR and a denser, slower-crystallizing structure suited to thick-wall pressure pipe. It is not interchangeable with film-grade HDPE 5300E or injection-grade materials. When a colored or non-black pressure pipe is required, a natural PE100 base resin with separate pigment metering is used; QL585P supplies the carbon-black-containing formulation directly, which removes the need for high-shear carbon black masterbatch dispersion but prevents color changes at the extruder hopper. Storage should be dry and below 50 °C; although carbon black imparts ultraviolet resistance, extended outdoor stockpiling can still alter surface oxidation and moisture uptake. Published data for some niche applications, including above-ground mining slurry pipe, is limited; validation according to the service pressure, temperature, and fluid chemistry is necessary before use.
