Application of PetroChina Daqing HDPE 5000S

What Limits Parison Wall Uniformity in 5L–30L Extrusion Blow Molding?

PetroChina Daqing HDPE 5000S is characterised by a melt flow rate of 0.8–1.0 g/10 min at 190 °C under 5 kg load when tested to ISO 1133-1:2022. Density is typically 0.953–0.956 g/cm³ by ISO 1183-1. On single-station shuttle blow moulders with 80–150 t clamp force and accumulator heads, parison wall uniformity is controlled by the interaction of melt temperature, die swell, and parison sag. Barrel temperature settings for a 60 mm grooved-feed extruder with 24:1 L/D are commonly 180 °C feed, 200 °C compression, 210 °C metering, 205 °C head, and 200 °C die. Die gap is set between 0.8 mm and 2.0 mm depending on container volume and parison length. Die swell values in the range 35–60 % for diameter and 70–110 % for thickness are observed when the die land length is 15× the die gap. Use of a diverging die mandrel reduces wall-thickness variation in the pinch-off zone. Melt pressure at the accumulator head is held at 200–300 bar. The end product is UN-certified jerry cans and industrial containers up to 30 L. Dangerous goods packaging requires testing under ADR/RID 6.1.5.3, with conditioning at −18 °C and a drop height of 1.2 m for packing group II. Food-contact versions are governed by FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c) and EU No 10/2011 with an overall migration limit of 10 mg/dm². Process limitation: moisture uptake above 0.05 wt% before extrusion blow moulding produces melt viscosity heterogeneity and surface splay. Hopper drying at 70–80 °C for 2 h is required only when ambient relative humidity exceeds 80 % or when regrind fraction exceeds 20 wt%.

On water-bath monofilament lines, PetroChina Daqing HDPE 5000S is processed through a 45 mm single-screw extruder with 30:1 L/D and a 12–36 hole spinneret plate. Melt temperature is maintained at 230–250 °C to reduce melt fracture in 0.20–0.50 mm diameter filaments. The extruded filaments pass through an air gap of 10–20 mm before entering a quench bath at 25–40 °C. Quench water temperature is maintained within ±1 °C using a closed-loop chiller because diameter variance is the primary batch-to-batch defect. Hot-stretching is performed in two ovens: first-stage draw ratio 4:1–5:1 at 80–100 °C, second-stage draw ratio 1.5:1–2.2:1 at 100–120 °C. Total draw ratio is therefore 8:1–11:1. Line speed after second-stage drawing ranges from 500 m/min to 1200 m/min for 0.20 mm filaments. The formulation for outdoor rope and netting uses 2–4 wt% HDPE-based UV stabilizer masterbatch and 1–3 wt% pigment masterbatch. Amine-functional antistatic agents are excluded from these formulations because they cause die deposits at melt temperatures above 230 °C. Tenacity values of 0.35–0.50 N/tex for 0.20–0.50 mm monofilament are measured by ISO 2307. End products include fishing nets, aquaculture cages, industrial ropes, and anti-hail netting. Compliance for polyolefin monofilaments is evaluated by ASTM D3218. Process boundaries: total draw ratio below 8:1 leaves unoriented core polymer and reduces tensile strength, while above 11:1 causes fibrillation and surface roughness. Published data for this specific grade in high-denier aquaculture netting is limited.

Thermoformed HDPE Sheet Rolling Bank Temperature Control and Plug-Assist Setup

Extrusion of HDPE 5000S sheet for thermoforming uses a 90 mm single-screw extruder with 30:1 L/D, a flat die of 800–1200 mm width, and a three-roll calendering stack. Melt temperature is held at 210–230 °C. Roll temperatures are set 60–80 °C top, 50–70 °C middle, and 40–60 °C bottom to produce sheet from 0.3 mm to 2.0 mm. The sheet is reheated to 125–135 °C surface temperature for plug-assist thermoforming. Rolling bank temperature variation across the sheet width is kept within ±2 °C by infrared pyrometry. Mould temperature is controlled at 20–40 °C to balance cycle time and corner stress whitening. Plug speed ranges from 200 mm/s to 400 mm/s. Draw ratio is limited to 1.5:1–2.0:1 because unmodified 5000S exhibits localized necking at deeper draw ratios. End products include food-contact meat trays, bakery clamshells, and non-food industrial separator sheets. Compliance for food-contact sheet is verified under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c) and EU No 10/2011. Non-food dunnage is tested for tensile properties by ISO 527-3. Heavy-metal restrictions follow RoHS 2011/65/EU if electronic component packaging is involved. Operational limitation: roll stack temperatures below 40 °C cause excessive sheet curl due to differential crystallinity. The addition of 0.1–0.3 wt% nucleating agent is used only when faster crystallization is required for higher cycle rates.

When Low-Pressure Irrigation Pipe Must Meet ISO 4427 Hydrostatic Design Basis

PetroChina Daqing HDPE 5000S is suitable for low-pressure irrigation pipe, drainage pipe, and cable ducting where a PE80 or PE63 long-term hydrostatic design basis is acceptable. It is not recommended for PE100 pressure pipe unless validated by ISO 9080 long-term testing. Pipe extrusion is performed on a 65 mm grooved-feed extruder with 30:1 L/D and a spiral mandrel die. Barrel temperatures from feed to metering are 190 °C, 200 °C, and 210 °C. Die temperature is 200 °C and melt temperature is 210–220 °C. Die gap is set at 0.8–1.2 mm for pipe diameters from 63 mm to 110 mm. Vacuum calibration is maintained at −0.3 to −0.6 bar. Melt pressure before the screen changer is held at 180–250 bar with a 20/40/60 mesh screen pack. Output rates of 150–300 kg/h are typical for this line size. Wall thickness follows SDR 17 or SDR 21 for irrigation pressure classes up to PN 6. Oxidative induction time should remain above 20 min at 200 °C by ISO 11357-6. Outdoor pipe compounds contain 2.0–2.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch with dispersion assessed by ISO 18553. Hydrostatic tests at 20 °C and 80 °C follow ISO 1167-1. Process boundaries: melt temperature above 220 °C increases the risk of melt fracture at high shear stress, while below 200 °C spiral flow lines remain visible on the pipe inner surface. End products include drip irrigation laterals, low-pressure sprinkler pipes, and electrical conduit.

For injection molding of PetroChina Daqing HDPE 5000S into large-format crates, pallets, and structural components, clamp force requirements often reach 800–1200 t depending on projected area. The screw should have 20:1 L/D with compression ratio 2.5–3.0. Melt temperature is held at 210–230 °C, injection pressure at 80–120 MPa, hold pressure at 40–60 MPa, and mould temperature at 20–40 °C. Linear mould shrinkage is typically 1.5–2.5 % when measured by ISO 294-4. Differential cooling across rib intersections is a known cause of warpage on pallet decks. Mould temperature variation is kept within ±2 °C using conformal cooling channels or turbulent water flow. Cycle time for a 60 mm thick pallet deck is typically 90–120 s. The formulation for returnable transit packaging includes 0.1–0.3 wt% nucleating agent for shorter cycle time and 0.5–1.5 wt% antistatic masterbatch for dust resistance. Outdoor pallets use 0.3–0.8 wt% UV stabilizer masterbatch. End products include stackable vegetable crates, automotive dunnage, and lightweight racking boards. Compliance for food-contact crates is covered by FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c). Mechanical durability of pallets is tested by ISO 8611-1:2011 for nominal load and deflection. Operational limitation: wall thickness below 1.5 mm is not recommended because the low melt flow rate increases filling pressure and promotes short shots in multi-cavity tools.

Film Extrusion Die Gap Oscillation in High-Molecular-Weight HDPE

Heavy-duty HDPE film from PetroChina Daqing HDPE 5000S is produced on a blown-film line equipped with a 50 mm extruder, 24:1 L/D, and a spiral mandrel die of 150–300 mm. Melt temperature is maintained at 190–210 °C, die gap at 1.0–1.5 mm, and blow-up ratio at 3:1–5:1. Frost line height is set between 600 mm and 1000 mm. Film thickness is controlled from 0.015 mm to 0.080 mm. Tensile properties of HDPE film are tested by ASTM D882, dart impact by ASTM D1709 Method A, and Elmendorf tear by ASTM D1922. For low-friction and anti-block performance, masterbatches are added at 0.05–0.15 wt% slip and 0.1–0.3 wt% anti-block. Fluoropolymer processing aid at 0.02–0.05 wt% is added only when melt fracture appears at high output. Die gap oscillation above ±0.05 mm produces gauge bands and TD tear strength variation. Process limitation: frost line height above 1200 mm increases MD orientation and reduces TD tear strength. End products include geomembrane backing, heavy-duty industrial sacks, and temporary construction sheeting. Compliance for construction film is evaluated by ASTM D4397 for geomembrane backing and EN 13655 where film is used as agricultural mulch. Published data for this specific grade in 0.015 mm high-stalk film is limited.
