Application of PetroChina Daqing HDPE 2200J

PetroChina Daqing HDPE 2200J is a high-density polyethylene injection-moulding grade whose commercial certificates commonly report a nominal melt flow rate of 5.0 g/10 min at 190 °C under 2.16 kg load per ISO 1133-1:2022, and a nominal density of 0.960 g/cm³ per ISO 1183-1:2019. The grade does not normally require pre-drying under indoor storage below 60 % RH; if surface condensation occurs following outdoor storage or temperature swing, drying at 60–70 °C for 1–2 h prevents visible splay on the moulding surface. These rheological and thermal boundaries place HDPE 2200J in the thin-wall injection-moulding corridor where flow length, sink-mark control, and cycle-time reduction are the primary industrial variables.

High-throughput manufacture of dairy crates, bread trays, fish totes, and reusable logistics containers from HDPE 2200J is executed on hydraulic or hybrid injection-moulding machines with clamp force from 800 t to 2000 t depending on projected area. The material is processed in the melt-temperature window 180–220 °C, measured at the nozzle, with the mould maintained at 10–25 °C to shorten cycle time while preserving side-wall flatness. When the finished article is intended for direct contact with unpacked fruit, vegetables, or dry foodstuffs within the EU, the compound must comply with Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 as amended, applying an overall migration limit of 10 mg/dm² or 60 mg/kg under the prescribed food simulants; for the US market, FDA 21 CFR §177.1520(c) covers olefin polymers, with the finished crate subject to the extractive limitations set out in that section. For export to China, GB 4806.7-2016 governs plastic food-contact materials and requires total migration below 10 mg/dm² after testing in 4 vol% acetic acid, 95 % ethanol, and olive oil or approved simulant substitutes. The compound formulation is commonly built on 100 phr of HDPE 2200J with a PE-based colour masterbatch at 1.0–2.5 wt%, a fluoropolymer-based processing aid at 0.02–0.05 wt%, and, where static dusting is a bottleneck in automated palletising, a glycerol-monostearate antistatic additive at 0.05–0.15 wt%. The injection process uses screw compression ratios from 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 and L/D ratios from 20:1 to 24:1; fast injection velocity of 100–250 mm/s is applied to fill wall thicknesses between 2.0 mm and 3.0 mm, followed by holding pressure at 40–60 % of peak pressure for 6–14 s. Gate placement is normally side-edge or fan-gate, with the gate land set to 0.8–1.2 mm to prevent jetting. Terminal parts produced under these conditions include ventilated dairy crates in 4-bottle and 6-bottle footprints, stackable bread trays, reusable fish boxes, and lightweight e-commerce return totes.

Does a Melt Flow Rate of 5.0 g/10 min Provide Sufficient Hot-Runner Pressure Stability for 28 mm Tamper-Evident Beverage Closures?

High-cavitation closure moulding from HDPE 2200J places different demands on the material than crate production because the flow path narrows through a 0.45–0.70 mm tamper-evident bridge, and holding-pressure transmission into the centre of the part controls side-wall concentricity. Under ISO 1133-1:2022, the 5.0 g/10 min melt flow rate supports filling of 48–96-cavity hot-runner tools without excessive nozzle pressures, provided the melt temperature at the hot-runner manifold does not exceed 230 °C for extended residence time; above 240 °C, observable viscosity reduction is accompanied by odour and yellowing in unpigmented closures. For beverage closures in European contact applications, the formulation is assessed under EU No 10/2011 and, where relevant, EC 1935/2004; in the US, FDA 21 CFR §177.1520(c) applies, while child-resistant chemical closures are additionally tested to ISO 8317:2015 or 16 CFR §1700.20. The standard compound begins with 100 phr HDPE 2200J, a lubricant package of 0.04–0.08 wt% zinc stearate, a slip package of 0.05–0.10 wt% erucamide to control removal torque, and an antioxidant stabiliser package of 0.03–0.08 wt% hindered phenol plus phosphite co-stabiliser. A nucleating agent such as sodium benzoate at 0.05–0.15 wt% is frequently added to increase crystallisation temperature and shorten cycle time, although loadings above 0.20 wt% can reduce impact along the bridge. Processing on a high-speed line uses valve-gated hot runners with individual nozzle temperature control, mould temperature 8–15 °C, injection pressure 80–120 MPa, holding pressure 50–75 MPa, and total cycle time 6–10 s for a 1.5–2.0 mm bridge and thread geometry. Terminal closure formats include 28 mm PCO 1881 beverage closures, 38 mm tamper-evident lids for dairy powders, and 45/55 mm drum closures with EPE induction seals.

Open-head injection-moulded pails in sizes from 5 L to 25 L are a higher tonnage application where the dominant process variable is not thin-wall flow but packing of the bottom-to-sidewall radius, which in service is subjected to drop-impact loads and internal hydrostatic head. HDPE 2200J is processed at melt temperatures of 200–240 °C, the upper portion of the range being tolerated only for short residence times below 5 min; at lower temperatures, the 0.960 g/cm³ density and narrow molecular weight distribution reduce sink-mark formation in the handle boss but increase the risk of underpacking at the base. For dangerous-goods packaging, pails are type-tested to the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Model Regulations and must bear the UN packaging code 1H2 for plastics jerricans and pails with a removable lid, where applicable. Food-contact pails follow EU No 10/2011, FDA 21 CFR §177.1520(c), and, for China, GB 4806.7-2016; industrial pails not entering food service are often assessed for stacking load under ASTM D4577-19 and for drop impact under ASTM D5276-19. The typical formulation is 100 phr HDPE 2200J with a UV-stabiliser package of 0.15–0.30 wt% HALS when the pail is stored outdoors, a hindered phenolic antioxidant at 0.03–0.08 wt%, a PE-based colour masterbatch at 2.0–4.0 wt%, and an external metal-stearate lubricant at 0.05–0.10 wt%. Post-consumer or production regrind may be incorporated up to 20 wt% if the regrind has been re-stabilised and screened below 1.0 mm, but higher levels reduce environmental stress crack resistance and may invalidate food-contact certification. The moulding line uses accumulator-assisted injection with clamp force between 1000 t and 2500 t, melt cushion kept within 3–6 mm, injection pressure 90–140 MPa, holding pressure 60–80 % of peak, and cooling time 18–30 s for wall thickness 2.5–4.0 mm. A valve-gated central hot runner or large direct edge gate with cold slug well is used to avoid weld-line weakness. Finished article types include 5 L, 10 L, 15 L, and 20 L open-head pails, tamper-evident lid systems, and pails with integral metal or plastic handle ears.

Ventilated Logistics Crates and Pallet Boxes: Cold-Impact Failure, UV Residence, and Gate Sequencing

Distribution cycles for ventilated crates and pallet boxes used in cold storage, field harvest, or e-commerce pool distribution expose the same HDPE 2200J base grade to impact loads at -18 °C and prolonged UV radiation that can shift gloss, yellowing, and notched impact. The mechanical compliance baseline for these non-food logistics units is often drawn from ASTM D638-22 for tensile yield stress and elongation at break, ASTM D790-17 for flexural modulus, and ISO 179-1:2010 or ASTM D256-10 for notched impact; when the crates are packed on pallets, unit-load stability is tested under ISTA 6-Amazon or ASTM D4169-22 distribution-cycle protocols, not by a single material standard. Formulation adjustment for cold-impact margin frequently combines 100 phr HDPE 2200J with 5–15 wt% metallocene LLDPE or butene-based linear low-density polyethylene; at the upper end, tensile yield stress drops and pallet-stacking deflection rises, so the substitution is limited to applications where the crate is not loaded beyond 250 kg per stack position. UV-stabilised outdoor crates use 0.15–0.30 wt% HALS and 0.05–0.15 wt% carbon black or rutile titanium dioxide as an opacity package, with the carbon-black route providing the stronger UV shield but excluding many food-contact declarations. The production process for larger flat-side panels uses sequential valve-gated nozzles to advance the flow front across the part, melt temperature 190–230 °C, mould temperature 10–30 °C, injection speed 100–200 mm/s, and holding profile staged at 70 %, 50 %, 30 % of peak pressure over 10–20 s to control post-mould warpage. Gate sequencing is the most common failure source: if the second valve pin opens before the first flow front has reached the junction, gas entrapment and visible knit lines form along the side wall. Terminal products include collapsible pallet boxes, vented agricultural crates with drainage slots, stack-and-nest logistics totes, and dairy bread trays with reinforced bottom ribs.

Houseware and modular storage articles produced from HDPE 2200J are generally lower technical risk than caps or dangerous-goods pails, but the industrial requirement is dominated by scratch resistance, colour consistency across multi-cavity tools, and avoidance of warpage on long flat surfaces such as drawer fronts. Regulatory compliance for articles sold into the EU market is primarily REACH Annex XVII for restricted substances and the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive 94/62/EC for heavy-metal concentration limits in packaging, while products intended for kitchen storage and contact with dry or aqueous foods at room temperature may be tested under EU No 10/2011 or FDA 21 CFR §177.1520(c) if the food-contact claim is made. The compound is based on 100 phr HDPE 2200J with a colour masterbatch loading of 1.0–3.0 wt%, a processing aid at 0.02–0.04 wt% for high-gloss mould surfaces, and an antioxidant package at 0.03–0.06 wt%; outdoor garden storage boxes may require an additional 0.10–0.20 wt% UV stabiliser. Moulding is performed on general-purpose injection presses from 250 t to 600 t clamp force, with melt temperature 180–220 °C, mould temperature 15–30 °C, injection speed 80–150 mm/s, and cooling times of 10–20 s for walls from 2.0 mm to 3.5 mm. Typical finished parts include under-bed storage boxes, stackable shoe boxes, modular drawer units, wardrobe drawers, and clothes hangers with integrally moulded hooks.

When EN 71-3 Migration Limits Apply to HDPE Toys, Heavy-Metal Pigment Blends Rather Than the Base Polymer Are the Dominant Compliance Variable

Toy and infant-article production from HDPE 2200J is technically feasible in the same injection-moulding window as housewares, but the compliance burden shifts from the base resin to the colour and additive package because the base polyethylene contributes negligible regulated heavy metals. In the EU, toys must satisfy the Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC with mechanical hazard testing under EN 71-1:2014+A1:2018 and migration of elements in EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021, which sets limit values for 19 elements, including aluminium at 5625 mg/kg, lead at 23 mg/kg, and chromium VI at 0.02 mg/kg; for the US, ASTM F963-23 and 16 CFR Part 1307 govern toy safety, while REACH Annex XVII entries 51 and 52 restrict the presence of six phthalates to 0.1 wt% each in plasticised materials. The typical HDPE 2200J toy compound is 100 phr base resin with heavy-metal-free organic or complex inorganic pigments at 0.5–2.0 wt%, an antioxidant package at 0.03–0.06 wt%, a neutral hydrocarbon processing aid at 0.02–0.05 wt%, and, where exterior UV exposure is expected, 0.10–0.20 wt% HALS. Formulators should not assume that a food-contact-certified masterbatch is automatically EN 71-3 compliant because certain heat-stable mixed-metal oxide pigments and chromium-based yellows may meet indirect food-contact limits but exceed toy migration limits. Moulding is performed at melt temperature 180–220 °C, mould temperature 15–25 °C, injection speed 60–120 mm/s, and holding pressure 40–60 MPa; multi-cavity tools with polished cavities and generous ejection areas avoid stress whitening on snap-fit assembly features. Terminal toy and leisure parts include building blocks, sand and water play components, ride-on toy wheel hubs, storage baskets for playrooms, and outdoor play panels; published data for EN 71-3 migration from HDPE 2200J in the specific final formulation is limited and must be re-established by the converter on the finished article.
