Application of PetroChina Daqing ABS 121

In injection-moulded HVAC enclosures, instrument panel lower carriers, and speaker grille frames, the melt rheology of PetroChina Daqing ABS 121 is exploited for moderate-flow, low-set tooling applications where dimensional stability of a non-reinforced styrenic is sufficient. The polymer is dried in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 2–4 h to reach a residual moisture level below 0.05 wt%. A dew point of -30 °C is maintained. The melt temperature is held between 220 °C and 250 °C. Residence time above 250 °C is limited to 5 min to avoid thermo-oxidative degradation of the polybutadiene phase. Injection moulding machines with screw diameters of 50–80 mm and L/D ratios of 20:1–25:1 are used. Clamp force is calculated at 3–5 kN/cm² of projected area. Filling pressure is set from 80 MPa to 120 MPa. Holding pressure is maintained at 60–80% of filling pressure. Mould surface temperature is controlled between 40 °C and 80 °C. Textured surfaces require the upper end of the mould temperature range to avoid visible flow hesitations and poor knit-line strength. For electroplated decorative trim, the moulded substrate is etched in a chromic acid-based solution containing 350–420 g/L CrO₃ and 180–220 mL/L concentrated H₂SO₄ at 60–70 °C for 6–10 min. The etch removes butadiene domains and creates mechanical undercuts. Overetching produces surface haze and reduces adhesion. The electroless nickel layer is deposited at 0.2–0.5 µm, followed by electrolytic copper at 15–25 µm, semi-bright nickel at 8–12 µm, and a chromium topcoat at 0.25–0.5 µm. Peel adhesion of plated ABS is typically evaluated according to ASTM B533. Published values for this specific Daqing grade are limited, and lot-specific verification is required for automotive decorative trim. Flammability of interior materials is assessed under FMVSS 302 or ISO 3795. Fogging is measured by DIN 75201 B or VDA 278 where OEM specifications require. The grade is not inherently UV-stabilized. Upper-cabin parts with indirect solar exposure may require a 2.0–3.0 wt% carbon black masterbatch or a UV-stabilized colour concentrate. Terminal components include glove box outer shells, HVAC duct housings, door panel insert carriers, and centre console side brackets. Load-bearing crash-relevant members are outside the application envelope.

Does HB-rated ABS 121 Need Additional Shielding in Low-Voltage Enclosures?

The published flammability classification of Daqing ABS 121 constrains its use in low-voltage switchgear accessory covers, meter terminal shields, and DIN-rail housings. The grade is a general-purpose ABS. It is normally classified as UL 94 HB under the horizontal burning test of IEC 60695-11-10:2014. Unless an updated supplier yellow card lists a different rating, the applicable classification is HB. The material is not a V-0 or V-2 polymer. Live parts must therefore be separated by a metal screen or by a V-0-rated internal barrier. The comparative tracking index of ABS systems generally falls between 400 V and 600 V when tested under IEC 60112:2003. Under IEC 60664-1, a CTI of 400–599 V corresponds to material group II, while 600 V and above corresponds to material group I. Because the grade-specific CTI for Daqing ABS 121 is not published in the current public datasheet, a conservative material group II assumption is used for creepage distance calculations. Electric strength is evaluated under IEC 60243-1:2013. For a 3.0 mm injection-moulded plaque, unfilled ABS often shows short-term electric strength from 15 kV/mm to 25 kV/mm. This is a general ABS range and does not replace a missing grade-specific datasheet value. The melt temperature is kept at 210–240 °C. Screw speed on a 60 mm injection screw is limited to 80 rpm to control shear heating. Regrind levels are limited to 20 wt% for visible housing surfaces. Mould temperature is set at 40–60 °C. Part wall thickness is maintained at 2.5–3.2 mm for stiffness without excessive cooling time. A compliance verification map is provided in Table 1. Terminal components include meter terminal cover plates, strain-relief brackets, and low-voltage distribution box covers under 600 V AC where HB-rated materials are permitted by the end-product standard.

Glow-wire thresholds in decorative appliance panels

Control panel surrounds, dryer knob caps, and refrigerator door end caps are designed with wall thicknesses between 2.0 mm and 3.5 mm to balance sink marks against cycle time. The melt temperature is set at 220–240 °C. The mould temperature is held at 50–70 °C. Sequential valve-gated hot runners are used for large flat panels. Gate diameter is 0.8–1.2 mm with a gate land of 0.5–0.8 mm. Holding pressure is 60–80 MPa for 6–10 s per 1.0 mm of nominal wall thickness. Daqing ABS 121 is not inherently resistant to glow-wire ignition. Under IEC 60335-1:2020 Clause 30.2.3, unattended appliance components carrying current greater than 0.2 A must withstand 750 °C glow wire. The grade has no published GWIT classification under IEC 60695-2-13:2021. Direct contact with live conductors is therefore outside the operational envelope. The polymer is confined to user-accessible decorative panels, knob caps, and trim rings that are separated from current-carrying connectors by a flame-retardant barrier or a metal chassis. For colour consistency, 2.0–4.0 wt% of a pre-dried polyolefin-based colour masterbatch is used. Titanium dioxide addition of 1.0–2.5 wt% is typical for white appliance parts. The masterbatch carrier resin must be miscible with SAN. Polycarbonate-based masterbatch is avoided because PC and ABS can form a two-phase morphology with unpredictable gloss at low carrier levels. Terminal components include washing machine control panel surrounds, dryer knob caps, and refrigerator door end caps.

Extrusion of monolayer ABS sheet for thermoformed travel-goods shells and equipment cases uses Daqing ABS 121 on a single-screw extruder with a 32:1 L/D barrier screw and a barrel temperature profile of 190–230 °C from feed throat to die. A gear pump is placed upstream of the flex-lip sheet die to damp pressure fluctuations. The melt temperature at the die is controlled at 210–230 °C. Polished chill rolls are maintained at 70–90 °C for gloss control. Lower roll temperatures produce a matte finish but can induce orientation stress. Sheet thickness ranges from 1.5 mm to 4.0 mm. The extruded sheet is thermoformed at a sheet surface temperature of 150–180 °C. Plug-assisted forming with aluminium plugs and mould temperatures of 60–80 °C is used for deep-draw luggage shell halves. The regrind ratio for trim scrap is limited to 20 wt% for first-surface applications. Up to 30 wt% is acceptable in hidden inner shells if not exposed to low-temperature impact below -20 °C. Mechanical strength of formed sheet follows ISO 527-2:2012 for tensile yield stress and ISO 178:2019 for flexural modulus. The outdoor service temperature range for general-purpose ABS is normally 0–60 °C. Without grade-specific low-temperature notched impact data, Daqing ABS 121 should not be used for luggage shells intended for transport at temperatures below -20 °C. This is an operational boundary, not a published property. Terminal components include hard-side suitcase shells, instrument transport cases, and equipment housing covers.

When ABS 121 Replaces PC/ABS in Consumer Electronics Housings

The replacement of PC/ABS with Daqing ABS 121 in keyboard top covers, monitor rear bezels, mouse shells, and router housings is conditional on the reduced heat deflection resistance. The deflection temperature under 1.82 MPa according to ISO 75-2:2020 for general-purpose ABS typically falls in the 85–100 °C range, while PC/ABS blends may exceed 110 °C. This difference is critical for devices with convective heat generation or solar load. For indoor consumer electronics with service ambient below 35 °C and internal air temperature below 65 °C, ABS 121 is acceptable if the maximum material temperature does not exceed 75 °C at the upper operating limit, based on a safety margin below the HDT. The moulding process uses a melt temperature of 230–250 °C and a mould temperature of 50–70 °C. For thin-wall sections of 1.5–2.0 mm, filling speed is set above 80% of machine maximum, and packing pressure is held at 60–80 MPa. Texturing of the cavity is specified at VDI 24–27 roughness for low-glare bezels. Multiple gates in keyboard top covers create knit lines. A melt temperature at the upper end of the window improves knit-line strength but may increase gas burn marks if venting depth exceeds 0.02 mm. Compliance with RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU as amended and REACH Regulation EC 1907/2006 must be verified from the supplier's material declaration. The polymer housing provides no inherent electromagnetic shielding. A conductive nickel-copper coating or conductive gasket is required if EMC containment is mandatory under IEC 62368-1:2018. The surface resistivity of unfilled ABS is normally 10¹⁴–10¹⁶ Ω/square when measured under IEC 62631-3-2:2016. Antistatic masterbatch at 0.5–1.5 wt% may lower surface resistivity to 10¹⁰–10¹² Ω/square. It is omitted if no electrostatic discharge requirement exists. Terminal components include keyboard top cases, router housings, monitor rear bezels, and mouse shells.

In diagnostic instrument bezels, laboratory cart side panels, and non-patient-contact enclosures for medical devices, Daqing ABS 121 is used only where the polymer does not contact the patient and is not subjected to repeated steam sterilisation. The material is not supplied with an ISO 10993-5 cytotoxicity certificate in its standard form. A device manufacturer must perform an end-use biocompatibility evaluation under ISO 10993-1:2018 and ISO 14971:2019 when the enclosure can be touched by patients. Gamma sterilisation is a known operational boundary. Unfilled ABS yellows and embrittles at doses above 25 kGy. Autoclaving at 121 °C is not recommended because the part will soften. Ethylene oxide sterilisation may be considered, but residual gas retention in the butadiene phase requires extended aeration. Moulding for medical enclosures uses a melt temperature of 220–240 °C, a mould temperature of 45–65 °C, and 0% regrind for colour-critical LED diagnostic housings. Cleanroom moulding is not required for general-purpose ABS. Controlled storage after moulding in sealed polyethylene film reduces dust adhesion. A 1.0–2.0 wt% titanium dioxide masterbatch is used for high-opacity white housings. The masterbatch carrier must be SAN or ABS-compatible. Electrical safety of the final device follows IEC 60601-1:2005+A1:2012+A2:2020, but the enclosure material itself is not the primary insulation. Terminal components include diagnostic instrument bezels, laboratory cart side panels, and non-sterile housing covers.

    More Introduction

PetroChina Daqing ABS 121 is a general-purpose acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin produced by PetroChina Daqing Petrochemical Company, supplied as natural pellets in 25 kg bags or bulk containers. The grade is designed for injection molding of rigid enclosures, consumer appliance components, and automotive interior trim. Under ISO 2580-1 classification, ABS 121 consists of a styrene-acrylonitrile matrix with dispersed polybutadiene rubber particles. Manufacturer-published typical values include a melt mass-flow rate of 19 g/10 min when measured at 220 °C and 10 kg load according to ISO 1133-1:2022, a density of 1.05 g/cm³ according to ISO 1183-1:2019, a notched Izod impact of 18 kJ/m² at 23 °C according to ISO 180/1A:2023, a flexural modulus of 2300 MPa according to ISO 178:2019, and a Vicat softening temperature of 98 °C according to ISO 306:2022. Because ISO specimen geometry and conditioning differ from ASTM-based North American datasheets, direct substitution into an ASTM D638 design calculation should be performed only after re-deriving the allowable strain at yield. The melt viscosity class positions ABS 121 between low-flow, high-impact Daqing ABS 0215A and flame-retardant ABS grades in the supplier portfolio. The material provides shorter fill and pack cycles than high-impact ABS 0215A but operates with a lower notched impact and lower heat-distortion boundary than high-impact grades.

What Drying and Feeding Defects Occur Above Residual Moisture of 0.05 wt%?

ABS 121 absorbs atmospheric moisture at rates controlled by pellet surface area, warehouse relative humidity, and residence time in hoppers or open gaylords. When residual moisture exceeds the manufacturer-recommended maximum of 0.05 wt%, water vaporizes at the melt front and produces splay, silver streaks, nozzle drool, and inconsistent shot-weight control. Moisture determination by ISO 15512:2019 using Karl Fischer titration on a sealed pellet sample is preferred over loss-on-drying, because loss-on-drying can also evaporate low-molecular-weight styrene-acrylonitrile oligomers and overreport moisture content. Production-scale handling on a desiccant-wheel hopper dryer at 80 °C for 2–4 h with a dew point of −30 °C or lower reduces residual moisture below 0.05 wt%. The dryer airflow should be maintained between 1.5 m/s and 2.0 m/s across the hopper cross-section. Hot-air ovens without desiccant beds are insufficient in plant environments where relative humidity remains above 60%. On a 450 tf injection molding machine with a 40 mm screw, moist pellets typically produce audible gas venting at the mold parting line, reduction in melt cushion consistency, and surface haze on textured cavity surfaces. The resulting parts may also show a loss of notched Izod impact at −30 °C because the polybutadiene phase undergoes thermal-oxidative chain scission at the surface. Dryer residence time should not exceed 8 h at 80 °C, because extended heating in dry air can shift pellet color from natural to pale yellow and increase the concentration of volatile oxidation by-products.

Rheological Boundaries in Fast-Cycle Thin-Wall Tools

The melt mass-flow rate of 19 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022 indicates a medium-flow ABS, but spiral-flow length is also controlled by melt temperature, cavity thickness, fountain-flow frozen-layer formation, and shear heating at the gate. In thin-walled enclosures with nominal wall thickness of 1.5 mm, the nozzle melt temperature should be maintained at 220–250 °C; excursions above 260 °C accelerate decomposition of the polybutadiene phase, shift the base resin color from natural to yellow, and deposit plate-out on cavity surfaces. The recommended mold coolant supply is 40–70 °C. Mold surface temperatures below 40 °C can produce visible weld-line deepening, poor knit-line strength, and gloss differential along the flow path. The melt exhibits shear-thinning behavior; apparent viscosity falls with increasing shear rate in runners and gates. Capillary rheometry according to ISO 11443:2021 is recommended to derive the power-law index and flow-consistency coefficient, because the single-point MFR value does not define the viscosity curve at gate shear rates between 1 000 s⁻¹ and 100 000 s⁻¹. For initial mold try-out, a back pressure of 0.5–1.0 MPa and a screw speed of 80–120 min⁻¹ reduce shear heating in the metering zone. Shot-to-shot mass variation below 0.3% is typically achievable when the melt cushion is held between 3 mm and 6 mm and the nozzle is closed by a needle valve during plastication. The injection pressure demand in a two-plate cold-runner tool is usually in the range 70–120 MPa, with holding pressure from 40–70 MPa. Gate freeze-off should be verified with cavity pressure sensors; switching from velocity control to pressure control before the cavity is 95–98% full reduces flash, clamp-force overshoot, and pack-pressure variability across multi-cavity tools.

When ABS 121 Replaces Daqing ABS 0215A in High-Gloss Enclosure Molding

Daqing ABS 0215A is a low-flow, high-impact ABS grade, while ABS 121 is formulated for higher melt flow and shorter cycle time. The consequence of the higher flow is a narrower processing window for thick sections; at wall thickness above 3.0 mm, the lower melt viscosity of ABS 121 can increase sink-mark depth if holding pressure is released before gate freeze-off. In a high-gloss television bezel mold with a hot-runner valve gate system, gate shear rate should remain below 100 000 s⁻¹ to avoid jetting and surface haze. ABS 121 allows filling at lower injection pressure than ABS 0215A, but packing time may need to be increased by 20–30% because the gate freezes later under the same mold temperature. The practical trade-off is that ABS 121 lowers notched Izod impact to approximately 18 kJ/m² at 23 °C, so it is not recommended for outdoor equipment or cold-impact applications below −20 °C. For indoor consumer electronics enclosures, the higher melt flow permits multi-cavity tools with reduced wall thickness and lower clamp force. If a tool was originally balanced for ABS 0215A, replacement with ABS 121 requires re-balancing the runner and increasing vent depth; otherwise air traps form at the end of fill, especially at rib-to-boss intersections. The mold shrinkage is typically 0.4–0.6% in flow direction and 0.5–0.7% transverse, measured according to ISO 294-4:2018; existing cavity dimensions can often be retained for small parts, but rib profiles should be reprofiled because the faster melt flow alters orientation and skin-core morphology.

Benchmarking ABS 121 Against High-Impact and Flame-Retardant Grades

ABS 121 differs from Daqing ABS 0215A primarily in melt-flow index and low-temperature impact behavior. Under the same ISO 1133-1:2022 condition, ABS 121 has a melt mass-flow rate near 19 g/10 min, while Daqing ABS 0215A is a low-flow grade whose datasheet shows a substantially lower MFR and higher notched Izod impact. The trade-off should be evaluated using ISO 180/1A:2023 notched Izod tests at 23 °C and −30 °C before substituting ABS 121 into structural or cold-service components. Against flame-retardant ABS grades, ABS 121 is unfilled, non-flame-retarded, and classified as HB under UL 94 at 1.5 mm; it must not be substituted into enclosures requiring V-0 or V-2 ratings. The absence of brominated flame-retardant additives reduces density and melt viscosity but limits accepted use in electrical and electronic products that must meet IEC 60695-2-11 glow-wire ignition requirements. The product also differs from glass-fiber reinforced ABS grades, because it contains no glass fiber and therefore retains higher surface gloss and easier paint adhesion but provides a lower flexural modulus of 2300 MPa under ISO 178:2019.

In applications such as vacuum cleaner housings, washing machine control panels, computer keyboard frames, and small appliance trim, ABS 121 is selected where the part must fill at wall thickness between 1.2 mm and 2.5 mm in a cycle time below 35 s. The unfilled nature preserves high surface gloss and paint adhesion, but the absence of glass fiber lowers the flexural modulus to approximately 2300 MPa; unsupported load-bearing ribs therefore require a minimum draft angle of 0.5° and a height-to-thickness ratio no greater than 6:1 to avoid ejection white marks. Chemical resistance follows the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix; strong polar solvents such as methyl ethyl ketone and dichloromethane should be excluded from cleaning operations. Adhesion of solvent-borne topcoats is generally acceptable after surface activation, but any topcoat system must be qualified by cross-cut test ISO 2409:2020 after a production-representative degreasing step. Regulatory acceptability of the base grade is supplier-specific: the material is not formulated with brominated diphenyl ether flame retardants, but RoHS compliance under 2011/65/EU and REACH SVHC screening under 1907/2006/EC should be confirmed through the lot-level certificate. The base resin is not intended for prolonged food-contact use; if food-contact status is required, migration testing under regional legislation must be performed on the finished part, because additives and colorants can alter the overall compliance. Electrical insulation applications require volume resistivity and comparative tracking index values from the end-use design standard; published data for this specific configuration is limited.
