High-speed vertical and horizontal form-fill-seal lines converting frozen and dry lipid-bearing foods require a sealant resin that maintains seal strength and dart impact resistance after film thickness reductions. Five-layer coextrusion blown-film equipment with 250–350 mm annular dies and internal bubble cooling frequently shows sealant-skin failure when the skin layer is formulated only with standard LLDPE, especially on vertical form-fill-seal lines cycling above 120 pouches/min. In this structure, Sclair VLDPE 22A is let down at 20–40 wt% into the sealant skin resin, while the remaining fraction is typically a 1-octene LLDPE with density in the 0.916–0.920 g/cm³ range and melt index near 0.9–1.1 dg/min. The sealant skin commonly represents 8–15% of a total web thickness of 45–80 µm. The formulation approach reduces seal initiation temperature without relying on EVA, thereby limiting acetic acid odor development and seal-bar contamination during prolonged runs.
The downstream process uses a three-layer or five-layer coextrusion blown-film line with die gap set at 1.8–2.5 mm, blow-up ratio maintained between 2.5:1 and 3.5:1, and melt temperature controlled from 190°C to 230°C. Frost line height is held at 6–8 die diameters, and the web is corona treated to 42–46 dyn/cm before flexographic or rotogravure printing. On the packaging line, seal-bar temperature is typically set from 115°C to 150°C with dwell of 0.3–0.8 s and jaw pressure of 2–4 bar. Hot tack is measured according to ASTM F1921-18(2023), and final seal strength is verified according to ASTM F88/F88M-23. The resin is normally supplied with no pre-drying requirement when stored below 60% RH; cold warehouse transfer under condensation risk requires 24 h conditioning before hopper loading.
Compliance for this sealant web is governed by 21 CFR 177.1520(c) 2.1 for olefin polymers in food contact, with use conditions selected under 21 CFR 176.170(c) Table 2. European Union food contact status is evaluated under Commission Regulation (EU) No 10/2011, with overall migration limits not exceeding 10 mg/dm² and testing under the applicable food simulant exposure matrix. The structure is not qualified for retort cycles above 121°C; hot-fill applications above 95°C require downstream seal-strength validation because VLDPE lowers the hot-tack plateau relative to higher-density polyethylene sealants. Terminal product types include frozen vegetable pillow pouches, dry soup and seasoning pouches, stand-up pouches for frozen fruit, and high-speed horizontal form-fill-seal snack pouches with zipper closures.

Cast film lines producing machine pallet wrap operate under draw ratios that can exceed 25:1, and the addition of a soft VLDPE to the cling layer shifts the draw resonance boundary. Sclair VLDPE 22A is introduced at 10–30 wt% in the core layer or at 20–40 wt% in the cling skin layer of a three-layer cast structure. The remaining matrix is typically a butene- or hexene-based LLDPE with melt index in the 1.0–2.0 dg/min range. When the grade is present above 30 wt% in the skin, the film surface tack can become dependent on ambient temperature and roll storage pressure, so a polyisobutylene or specialty cling masterbatch is separately let down at 3–5 wt% rather than increasing VLDPE content. The final film gauge is normally 12–23 µm for machine wrap, with pre-stretch on the wrapping head set at 200–300%.
The cast extrusion process uses a slot die gap of 0.6–1.0 mm, an air gap of 150–250 mm, and a chill roll temperature of 18–22°C. Melt temperature is maintained at 240–260°C; below 230°C, edge bead instability and draw resonance become more probable above 400 m/min. Line speed capability of 400–700 m/min is required for thin-gauge stock, and the vacuum box should provide uniform web laydown to the matte chill roll. Tests include ASTM D5748-19 for puncture resistance, ASTM D5458-95(2020) for cling force, ISO 527-3:2018 for tensile properties, and ASTM D4321-04(2021) for film yield. Compliance for industrial pallet wrap is addressed under REACH and not as direct food contact, unless separately evaluated under EU No 10/2011 for incidental food contact in secondary distribution environments. Terminal product types are machine pallet wrap, extended-core stretch film, hand wrap, and pre-stretched cast film rolls for warehouse distribution.
ISO 11607-1:2019 places seal integrity and seal transfer requirements on sterile barrier systems for medical devices, and coextruded polyethylene sealant films in these systems must perform after ethylene oxide or gamma sterilization without fiber tear or cohesive failure. A sealant film structure using Sclair VLDPE 22A at 50–70 wt% in the seal layer, with the remaining fraction based on LDPE or LLDPE for stiffness and web handling, is used at a total thickness of 30–50 µm. The grade contributes lower seal initiation temperature and better conformability around rigid catheter hubs and instrument edges. The structure is adhesive-laminated to uncoated Tyvek or medical-grade paper using solventless polyurethane adhesive at a coat weight of 2.0–3.5 g/m².
The downstream production route is cast extrusion followed by lamination and slitting. Cast film is produced with a slot die gap of 0.8–1.2 mm, melt temperature from 200°C to 240°C, and chill roll temperature of 15–22°C. The lamination line uses nip pressure of 3–5 bar and tunnel temperature sufficient to reach full adhesive cure. Seal transfer and seal strength are tested according to ASTM F88/F88M-23, ASTM F1921-18(2023), and ASTM F1140/F1140M-13 for burst resistance. Compliance is established against ISO 11607-1:2019 clauses 5.1.9 and 5.2, ISO 11607-2:2019 for validation of packaging processes, USP <661.1> for plastic packaging materials of construction, and EU MDR 2017/745 Annex I general safety and performance requirements. Terminal product types include surgical instrument pouches, catheter and guidewire pouches, IV tubing pouches, procedure kit lids, and breathable ethylene oxide sterilization pouches.

Round-bale silage wrap must retain puncture resistance when stretched over cut stems and frozen grass at subzero storage temperatures. Sclair VLDPE 22A is used at 15–30 wt% in the core of a three-layer cast stretch film, blended with LLDPE and, where additional cling is required, a PIB-rich skin layer. The film is pigmented white at 2.0–3.0 wt% titanium dioxide masterbatch for ultraviolet reflection, and a hindered amine light stabilizer package is added at 1.0–2.0 wt% in the outer layers to meet multi-month outdoor storage. The addition rate should not exceed 30 wt% because excessive soft-phase content reduces machine direction modulus below the level required for consistent pre-stretch on bale wrappers.
The cast film process uses a slot die gap of 0.8–1.2 mm, line speed of 450–550 m/min, and a chill roll set at 18–22°C. Standard roll width is 750 mm, film thickness is 25 µm, and pre-stretch is applied at 55–70% during wrapping. Compliance is evaluated under EN 14932:2018 for thermoplastic stretch films for wrapping silage bales, with additional REACH obligations for UV stabilizers and pigments. The structure is not intended for direct food contact. Terminal product types are round-bale silage wrap, haylage film, and long-length agricultural stretch rolls.
In extrusion lamination for aseptic and hot-fill cup lidding, the sealant layer must provide a clean seal against polypropylene or polystyrene cups without scorching the printed PET or aluminum foil layers. Sclair VLDPE 22A is added at 15–40 wt% to a low-density polyethylene sealant blend, and the molten web is applied at a coating weight of 15–25 g/m². The VLDPE fraction lowers the seal initiation temperature and permits seal bar operation below the distortion temperature of the printed substrate. The remainder of the sealant layer is selected from LDPE grades with low neck-in characteristics to maintain coating width stability during high-speed lamination.
The tandem extrusion coating line operates with melt temperature of 280–320°C, an air gap of 180–250 mm, chill roll temperature of 15–20°C, and line speed from 150 m/min to 300 m/min. The sealant layer is applied to the inner side of an aluminum foil or metallized PET web after adhesive priming. Seal strength is verified according to ASTM F88/F88M-23, hot tack according to ASTM F1921-18(2023), and coefficient of friction according to ASTM D1894-14. Compliance is addressed under 21 CFR 177.1520(c) 2.1, Commission Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 with overall migration limit of 10 mg/dm², and 21 CFR 174.5 for good manufacturing practice. Terminal product types are aseptic dairy cup lidding, hot-fill fruit cup lidding, single-serve condiment sachets, and portion-pack lidding for food service.
Thin-gauge produce bags for leafy greens and fresh-cut vegetables require a balance of clarity, dart impact, and transverse direction tear resistance. A three-layer blown film structure using Sclair VLDPE 22A at 5–15 wt% in the matrix layer, with the remaining fraction as a high-clarity LLDPE, permits film gauge reduction from 20 µm to 10–15 µm without loss of drop impact. The production line uses a die gap of 1.2–2.0 mm, a blow-up ratio of 2.2:1–2.8:1, and a frost line height of 4–6 die diameters. Melt temperature is maintained at 185–215°C. Above 15 wt% VLDPE, bubble stability declines in high-stalk configurations, and blocking may increase in wound rolls because of the low crystallinity of the resin. Compliance for direct whole-produce contact is evaluated under 21 CFR 177.1520(c) 2.1 and EU No 10/2011. Terminal product types include bagged leafy greens, fresh-cut vegetable bags, and perforated produce packaging for cold-chain distribution.
