Rotational moulding of vertical agricultural storage tanks in the 5,000 L to 25,000 L class uses Sclair MDPE 8340 BK as a black medium-density polyethylene powder with a nominal density of 0.934 g/cm³ and a melt index of 4.0 g/10 min when tested at 190 °C under 2.16 kg load per ISO 1133-1:2022. The carbon black loading of 2.0–2.5 wt% provides ultraviolet screening and slows surface oxidation during outdoor exposure; retention of more than 50% of original elongation after 3,000 h in ASTM D2565 weathering is the minimum gate for such tanks. On three-axis carousel rotomoulding equipment with a 4:1 primary-to-secondary rotation ratio, oven setpoints are maintained at 280–300 °C until the internal air temperature reaches 210–225 °C. The powder must remain dry and free-flowing; a bulk density below 0.45 g/cm³ promotes bridging in the charging port and non-uniform wall distribution across the crown and bottom knuckle radii. Wall thickness is specified at 5–8 mm for vertical cylindrical service because hydrostatic creep at the base knuckle becomes design-limited above 23 °C and 1.5 bar service pressure in ASTM D1998 hydrostatic testing. Forced-air cooling for 10–15 min is followed by water-mist cooling until demould temperature falls below 70 °C. Demoulding above that threshold causes surface wrinkling and boss distortion. The moulded tank is conditioned for 24 h at 23 ± 2 °C before fitting installation. The resin itself does not confer finished-part potable-water compliance; NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 certification applies to the entire tank as manufactured and cannot be assumed from the raw material alone.
Diesel transfer tanks in the 1,000–5,000 L range moulded from Sclair MDPE 8340 BK require a wall thickness of 8–12 mm because fuel contact reduces the effective safety factor through volume swell and surface softening. The medium-density architecture gives an Environmental Stress Crack Resistance exceeding 1,000 h under ASTM D1693 Condition B in 100% Igepal CO-630 at 50 °C, according to the manufacturer’s data sheet. That property is critical at internal boss interfaces and threaded fill necks, where residual moulded-in stress from abrupt geometry changes is highest. The inner surface must not be flame-treated or corona-treated to increase gasket adhesion; oxidation reduces stress-crack resistance and creates micro-cracks at the fuel line. Diesel formulations with aromatic content above 10 vol% cause higher mass uptake under ISO 175:2010 immersion; a wall-thickness allowance of 1.2 mm per 100 mm of calculated static-head thickness is applied when stored fluids exceed 40 °C. Stationary non-metallic fuel tanks may be assessed under EN 13341:2005 + A1:2011 or UL 2258 depending on the installation jurisdiction, but type approval depends on the complete tank system, including fittings, lift lugs, tie-down straps, and venting. Carbon black does not provide electrostatic-dissipative surface resistivity below 10⁹ Ω per IEC 61340-2-3; metallic fittings must be bonded and the tank body earthed separately when the liquid flow rate exceeds 60 L/min.

One-piece chemical containment components are rotationally moulded from Sclair MDPE 8340 BK as double-wall structures with 6–9 mm skins to eliminate joint welds and leak paths. The grade is specified for sodium hypochlorite 10%, sulphuric acid 30%, and sodium hydroxide 50% at ambient temperature; compatibility is confirmed by 30-day immersion to ISO 175:2010 with mass change below 1.5% for the acid and below 0.5% for the alkali and hypochlorite. Ketone solvents, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and strong oxidizing acids are excluded because mass uptake above 5% under the same test protocol produces stress-crack initiation at moulded-in corners. Secondary spill pallets must resist a static load of 1.25× rated capacity for 24 h without visible cracking; this acceptance criterion is tied to ASTM D1693 Condition B ESCR above 1,000 h. The pallet deck is moulded with 2–3° draft and a 150 mm spill containment lip. Fittings are spin-welded into moulded PE bosses; threaded brass or stainless steel inserts are isolated with PE flanges to avoid galvanic crevice corrosion and localized stress concentration. For outdoor installations, the same carbon black package used in the base resin provides UV resistance, but chalking and surface whitening may appear after 3,000–4,000 h of direct sunlight without mechanical property loss greater than 10% in tensile elongation.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sulphuric acid | 30% | 23 °C | <1.5% | Acceptable |
| Sodium hypochlorite | 10% | 23 °C | <0.5% | Acceptable |
| Sodium hydroxide | 50% | 23 °C | <0.5% | Acceptable |
| Diesel fuel | 100% | 40 °C | <1.0% | Acceptable with wall-thickness allowance |
| Methyl ethyl ketone | 100% | 23 °C | >5% | Not recommended |
Marine aquaculture floats and dock buoyancy modules are rotationally moulded from Sclair MDPE 8340 BK with a double-wall shell thickness of 6–10 mm. The shell is cooled to below 40 °C before two-component closed-cell polyurethane foam is injected at 1.0–2.0 bar through a one-way valve boss. Pinholes in the inner wall allow foam to penetrate the air gap and create hard spots that reduce low-temperature impact resistance; therefore, the moulding cycle is adjusted to hold peak internal air temperature at 220–230 °C until all powder has fused, followed by slow air cooling at 0.5 °C/s to preserve shell toughness. Low-temperature impact is evaluated by falling-weight impact at -20 °C and -40 °C using ASTM D5628-18; brittle failures at the mould parting line indicate excessive carbon black agglomeration or mould release contamination. Carbon black dispersion is assessed under ISO 18553 with rejection of agglomerates exceeding 100 µm. Saltwater immersion at 35 °C for 1,000 h under ISO 62:2008 should produce a mass gain below 0.2%. The part must be fitted with a sealed PE insert at the foam injection port; unsealed ports permit water ingress into the foam core and reduce net buoyancy by more than 10% over a 12-month service period.
For large injection-moulded agricultural crates, distribution totes, and material-handling bins, Sclair MDPE 8340 BK is processed on single-screw injection presses with clamp forces from 800 tonnes to 2,500 tonnes depending on projected area and wall thickness. The melt temperature is maintained at 220–250 °C, and the mould temperature is held at 15–40 °C with turbulent chilled-water lines. Injection speed is profiled between 15 mm/s and 30 mm/s at the flow front to prevent jetting in thick sections; hold pressure of 60–80 MPa is applied until the gate freezes. Because the grade may be supplied as 35-mesh rotomoulding powder, direct feeding into an injection screw can cause hopper bridging and inconsistent shot weight when the hopper throat diameter is below 100 mm. A crammer feeder or pre-compounded pelletized batch is required for machines with small throat openings. The moulded parts are subjected to ISO 8611-1:2021 flat pallet tests when used as pallets, with a rated load typically below 1,500 kg in racked storage at 23 °C; at -20 °C, the allowable dynamic drop height is reduced because the ductile-to-brittle transition of medium-density polyethylene sits near -10 °C to -30 °C depending on cooling rate. Gate blush and carbon black streaks are minimized by using direct sprue gates with a minimum diameter of 6 mm and by keeping residence time below 5 min at melt temperature. Long residence beyond 10 min accelerates oxidative degradation and causes brown streaking and a decline in tensile elongation at break measured by ASTM D638-14.
Field telemetry enclosures and chlorination skid cabinets are rotationally moulded from Sclair MDPE 8340 BK as twin-wall shells with 4–6 mm skins and 30–50 mm closed-cell polyurethane foam cores. Hinge bosses, latch recesses, and cable gland pads are moulded in; secondary drilling into the inner wall is minimized to avoid creating stress risers. The enclosure must pass a 1.0 J impact test at -30 °C using a falling-weight striker of 5 mm radius to ASTM D5628-18. Delamination at the foam-to-wall interface is checked by acoustic tap testing after 10 thermal cycles between -20 °C and 50 °C per IEC 60068-2-14 Nb. UV retention is assessed under ASTM D4329 UVA-351 at 1,500 h; surface chalking is permissible if tensile elongation retention remains above 80%. The black compound reduces surface heat build-up to 60–70 °C under 1,000 W/m² solar irradiance, but internal air temperature still requires venting to avoid condensation and electronic derating. The grade does not provide RF shielding or flame retardancy; enclosures requiring UL 94 V-0 or IEC 60695-11-10 classifications must use a barrier laminate or different resin system.
