Application of NOVA Chemicals Sclair MDPE 2508-UV9

SCLAIR MDPE 2508-UV9 is processed into geomembrane sheet on flat-die extrusion lines using single-screw extruders with L/D ratio 30:1 to 33:1, barrier-flighted screws, and a melt pump. The resin is supplied as a pelletized UV-stabilized compound with density 0.939 g/cm³ under ASTM D1505-18 and melt index 0.75 g/10 min under ASTM D1238-20 Procedure A at 190°C/2.16 kg. Barrel temperature profiles from the feed throat to the metering zone are set between 180°C and 220°C, with the feed throat water jacket held at 40°C to 60°C to prevent pellet bridging. Adapter and flat-die zones are controlled at 220°C to 230°C. Melt temperatures rising above 235°C consume the primary antioxidant package prematurely; the result is a drop in oxidative induction time below 15 min under ASTM D3895-22 at 200°C. A screen changer ahead of the gear pump uses a 80/120/80 mesh sequence; pressure drop across the screen is recorded to detect gel accumulation. The melt pump suction pressure is maintained at 50 bar to 100 bar, while discharge pressure is held below 350 bar to avoid die-lip build-up. The flat die gap is set between 2.0 mm and 2.8 mm for sheet thicknesses from 1.0 mm to 2.5 mm; thickness tolerance is controlled to ±10% under ASTM D5199-12. A three-roll stack with roll temperatures of 60°C to 80°C cools the sheet. Lower roll temperatures generate differential shrinkage and edge curl because the 0.939 g/cm³ density class crystallises rapidly; the UV9 stabiliser package does not measurably alter crystallisation rate. Textured surfaces are fixed by embossing rolls with asperity depth between 0.25 mm and 0.40 mm before edge trimming and winding. At ambient relative humidity below 60%, no desiccant predrying is required. Dry blending with amine-based masterbatches should be avoided unless retained OIT and ASTM G154-23 performance are confirmed.

Gauge variation across the sheet width is checked with a scanning thickness gauge; deviation greater than ±0.1 mm on a 1.5 mm nominal sheet requires die-bolt adjustment. The extruder screw speed is matched to melt pump capacity, commonly 60 rpm to 90 rpm on 120 mm to 150 mm diameter extruders producing 1,200 mm to 3,500 mm wide sheet. Melt fracture at the die lip is controlled by reducing output or raising die temperature within the 220°C to 230°C window; the medium-density melt has lower melt strength than a comparable high-density grade, so sudden output increases are more likely to produce sharkskin surface defects.

Why Does Hot-Wedge Seam Strength Drop After Incorrect Oxidative Induction Time?

Hot-wedge welding of 1.5 mm MDPE geomembrane panels exposes the resin to a narrow thermal window. The crystalline melting peak for a density of 0.939 g/cm³ lies near 124°C to 130°C; the wedge, however, must operate at 360°C to 430°C to generate a molten root without sustained bulk melting. At travel speeds below 1.0 m/min or wedge temperatures above 450°C, the weld root oxidises. Oxidative degradation is not visible on the bead, but the oxidative induction time measured on the root falls below 15 min under ASTM D3895-22 at 200°C. This condition creates brittle seam failure under ASTM D6392-20 shear testing, with elongation at break below 50% of parent sheet.

At the opposite boundary, wedge temperature below 340°C or travel speed above 3.0 m/min yields insufficient interdiffusion across the panel interface. Peel separation occurs at the seam boundary rather than as a film tearing bond. Welding crews use digital thermocouple probes and tachometer readings to keep wedge set point at 380°C to 420°C and travel speed at 1.5 m/min to 2.5 m/min. Nip pressure at the driven rollers is maintained at 20 N/mm to 40 N/mm along an overlap width of 85 mm to 100 mm. Seam specimens are cut after the weld line cools below 45°C. Field failure modes observed on double-wedge machines include uneven overlap due to panel wander, but the process control matrix below isolates the primary thermal and mechanical limits.

Preheat zone length of 150 mm to 250 mm ahead of the wedge contact point is maintained so that the sheet surface reaches 140°C to 160°C before the melt wedge passes. This reduces cold-lap defects at travel speeds above 2.0 m/min. Ambient welding conditions outside 5°C to 40°C require tenting or preheating because surface temperature depression alters the melt root geometry and reduces peel performance.

Rotational Moulding Cycle Parameters for Double-Wall Outdoor Storage Tanks

Rotational moulding of SCLAIR MDPE 2508-UV9 requires grinding pellet stock to 35-mesh (500 µm) powder. The process uses biaxially rotating moulds in forced-air ovens with oven set points from 260°C to 290°C. Peak internal air temperature, not oven set point, controls sintering; it is held at 190°C to 210°C for complete particle coalescence. At PIAT below 185°C, powder particle boundaries remain and the moulded part fails low-temperature impact testing under ASTM D1998-21 and ASTM D5276-19. Above 215°C, the heat stabiliser package is consumed, producing yellowing and a drop in OIT below 15 min under ASTM D3895-22 at 200°C. The dwell time for a 6 mm nominal wall is typically 18 min to 25 min depending on tooling mass and oven airflow.

Cooling rate governs warpage in double-wall flat panels. Forced-air cooling at 5°C/min to 10°C/min until the mould surface reaches 80°C, followed by water mist only after the part reaches 70°C, limits density gradients that cause bowing. Demoulding below 60°C is specified for large tanks. Internal air pressure during cooling, where tooling permits, is applied at 10 kPa to 20 kPa to hold the part against the mould wall and reduce shrinkage variation. Arm ratio and rotational speed are set according to the tank geometry; for double-wall tanks, a 4:1 secondary-to-primary axis speed ratio is common, but the optimum depends on the mould aspect ratio. No desiccant predrying is required unless surface condensation is present.

Evaluation of pond liner durability under chronic ultraviolet exposure requires separation of bulk polymer retention from surface chalking. SCLAIR MDPE 2508-UV9 carries the UV9 stabiliser designation, indicating a precompounded light stabiliser package; the exact HALS loading is proprietary, but its function is to inhibit free-radical chain scission at the exposed surface. Xenon-arc or fluorescent UV exposure per ASTM G154-23 cycle 4 using UVA-340 lamps at 0.89 W/m²·nm and black panel 60°C is used to rank retained tensile elongation under ASTM D638-14. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; converter validation should compare retained elongation at 10,000 h against project specifications rather than relying on supplier literature alone.

Surface chalking in pigmented or natural MDPE liners is a separate failure mode from structural embrittlement. Chalking produces a friable powder at the exposed surface and can reduce surface gloss measured per ISO 2813:2014. Chalking does not necessarily reduce tensile break strength but may indicate stabiliser depletion. For exposed pond liners, a minimum thickness of 1.5 mm, an aged OIT above 15 min under ASTM D3895-22, and welded seam integrity under ASTM D6392-20 after UV aging form the durability envelope. Additional coverage by rock ballast or soil reduces the UV dose and extends service life, but design must assume a portion of liner remains exposed at installation berms and anchor trenches.

Secondary Containment Liner Chemical Immersion and Stress Cracking Limits

Chemical containment applications using this resin require immersion testing under ASTM D543-21 before service. MDPE in the 0.939 g/cm³ density class resists dilute acids, alkalis, and many inorganic solutions at ambient temperature; however, stress cracking resistance under ASTM D1693 condition B is reduced in the presence of surfactants, certain glycols, and polar organics. The base resin typically exhibits ESCR above 500 h, but the UV9 package does not contribute to chemical resistance.

For secondary containment under 40 CFR 264.193, liner panels must be installed with welded seams and tested in accordance with ASTM D6392-20, while the site-specific leachate chemistry determines whether post-exposure OIT under ASTM D3895-22 at 200°C must remain above 15 min. Long-term immersion in xylene, toluene, ketone solvents, or chlorinated hydrocarbons above 40°C is outside the recommended service envelope; the resin swells, reduces tensile yield below design values, and develops stress cracks at notch points. Published chemical compatibility data for SCLAIR MDPE 2508-UV9 is limited; the ASTM D543-21 method must be carried out with the actual chemical mixture and weld geometry. Combination with amine-based antistatic additives is not recommended because basic amines can complex with hindered amine light stabilisers and reduce UV retention.

When Mining Heap Leach Pads Require Puncture Resistance After Coarse Rock Placement

Heap leach pad liner systems place 2.0 mm to 2.5 mm MDPE sheet beneath overliner drainage gravel and lifted coarse rock. Puncture resistance is measured under ASTM D4833-21; project specifications often require a minimum puncture force exceeding 400 N for 2.0 mm sheet, but site-specific values must be confirmed because subgrade preparation and rock angularity change the failure mode. SCLAIR MDPE 2508-UV9, processed at the flat-die conditions described for geomembrane, provides lower flexural stiffness than HDPE but improved multiaxial strain capacity; the trade-off reduces stress cracking under ASTM D5397-19 when surface wetting agents are present.

Subgrade preparation and cushion geotextiles must be considered with the resin puncture resistance. Angular rock larger than 40 mm should be placed only after a protective nonwoven geotextile of at least 400 g/m² has been deployed. The liner must be tested for puncture after installation and after overliner placement using ASTM D4833-21 and for seam continuity using air lance or spark testing. Published field data for this specific resin in heap leach applications is limited; design verification requires site-specific puncture tests on the welded geomembrane assembly.
