Application of NOVA Chemicals Sclair MDPE 13-5

Landfill capping, canal lining, and secondary containment installations that specify flexible geomembranes with lower flexural modulus than HDPE sheeting have used Sclair MDPE 13-5 as the base resin in flat-die extrusion and calendering lines. In these formulations the resin is metered at 93.5 wt%, a 40% carbon black masterbatch is added at 6.0 wt% to yield a final carbon black content of 2.4 wt% under ASTM D1603-14, and an antioxidant masterbatch is added at 0.5 wt%. The compound is processed on a single-screw extruder with a barrier screw and L/D 30:1, with barrel temperatures from 180°C in the feed zone to 215–225°C at the die. A flat die with a die gap of 1.8–2.4 mm is used for sheet thicknesses from 0.75 mm to 3.0 mm. The melt curtain is fixed onto a polished three-roll stack maintained at 75–90°C, and line speed is controlled between 3 m/min and 8 m/min depending on sheet thickness. Edge trim is re-fed at 5–10 wt% only after drying to moisture below 0.15 wt%, because higher trim moisture in MDPE causes melt pressure oscillation and gel formation at the die lip. Finished geomembrane products include un-reinforced pond liners, landfill caps, secondary containment baffles, and canal liners. Seam fusion on MDPE 13-5 geomembranes requires a 10–15°C lower interface temperature than HDPE seam welding; wedge welders operating at 220–240°C on HDPE are commonly adjusted to 205–225°C for this material, while maintaining track speed at 1.0–2.0 m/min. Published data specific to this configuration remains limited, so start-up weld trials using ASTM D6392-12 peel and shear specimens are required for each liner project.

When Is a Medium-Density PE80 Pipe Resin Qualified for SDR 11 Gas Distribution Lines?

In gas distribution projects where PE80-class polyethylene is specified for SDR 11 pipes at pressures up to 400 kPa, Sclair MDPE 13-5 is assessed against ISO 4437, EN 1555-1, ISO 12162, and ASTM D2513. The pipe compound contains 93.5–94.0 wt% base resin, 5.5–6.0 wt% carbon black masterbatch, and 0.5 wt% processing stabilizer masterbatch, producing a final carbon black level of 2.2–2.4 wt% under ISO 6964. Extrusion is carried out on a grooved-feed single-screw machine with L/D 33:1 and a helical barrier screw. The barrel profile is set from 180°C at the feed throat to 210–230°C in the metering zone, and the pipe die is held at 200–220°C. Melt pressure before the screen pack is maintained at 18–28 MPa, and the vacuum calibration tank is run at 15–25°C with vacuum from −0.5 bar to −0.8 bar. For a 110 mm OD pipe with SDR 11, wall thickness is 10 mm, and line speeds in production are commonly 0.35–0.70 m/min. Each completed pipe batch is subjected to hydrostatic resistance testing according to ISO 1167-1, butt-fusion weld assessment according to ISO 13953, and slow crack growth evaluation under ISO 13479. The lower flexural modulus of MDPE 13-5 relative to HDPE PE100 reduces bending forces during coil installation of small-diameter service lines but also limits applicable pressure rating. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, and the exact derating for site-specific gas composition with aromatic hydrocarbons should be confirmed with the resin manufacturer before qualification.

Rotational moulding of seamless storage tanks from Sclair MDPE 13-5 requires the pellet to be pulverized to a powder with 80 wt% passing 35 mesh (500 µm) and less than 5 wt% retained on 60 mesh (250 µm). Dry-blend formulations for outdoor agricultural and potable water tanks combine the pulverized resin at 96.5–98.0 wt% with a pre-dried UV-stabilizer masterbatch at 0.5–1.5 wt% and a pigment masterbatch at 0.5–2.0 wt%. Regrind from trimmed openings is restricted to ≤20 wt% because higher regrind fractions reduce impact resistance and increase surface porosity. Moulds are charged at room temperature and rotated biaxially at a 4:1 primary-to-secondary axis speed ratio while the oven is maintained at 260–290°C. Internal air temperature is monitored with a wireless thermocouple and is brought to 190–205°C, after which the mould is moved to a cooling chamber. Cooling is staged: forced air for 4–6 min, then water mist at 15–25°C for 3–5 min, then forced air again. Asymmetric cooling on flat-bottom tanks causes warpage at demoulding when internal air temperature remains above 70°C, so venting pins and internal mould-release coatings are mandatory. Fabricated products include vertical water storage tanks up to 10,000 L, chemical dosing tanks, portable sanitation cabinets, and food-contact hoppers and bins where compliance with 21 CFR 177.1520(c), NSF/ANSI 61, and ASTM D1998-21 is required. Mechanical qualification uses ASTM D638-14 tensile, ASTM D790-17 flexural, ASTM D256-10 Izod impact, and ASTM D1693-15 environmental stress crack resistance.

Accumulator-Head Extrusion Blow Moulding of High-ESCR Industrial Containers

The conversion of Sclair MDPE 13-5 into 30–220 L tight-head and open-head drums uses accumulator-head extrusion blow moulding with a barrel L/D 24:1 to 30:1. The formulation is maintained at 96.0–98.0 wt% base resin and 1.0–3.0 wt% colour masterbatch, with reprocessed regrind metered at 10–30 wt% of total compound only after drying to moisture below 0.15 wt%. Melt temperature at the die is kept at 190–210°C, which maintains flow while preventing thermal degradation. Parison programming is configured with 40–80 wall-thickness control points to compensate for die swell and sag; the die gap is set from 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm depending on container weight. Blow pressure is applied at 0.6–1.0 MPa, and mould temperature is controlled at 10–25°C to reduce cycle time without creating frozen-in stress. After trimming, containers intended for dangerous goods packaging are tested under the UN Model Regulations Chapter 6.1 and ADR/RID for drop impact at 1.8 m, stacking at 45°C for 28 days, and leakproofness at 20 kPa. Products include 30 L, 60 L, 120 L, and 220 L drums for cleaning chemicals, food-grade syrups, agricultural formulations, and intermediate bulk containers. The lower top-load capacity of MDPE relative to HMW-HDPE must be considered in pallet stacking specifications; published data for stack compression of this specific resin is limited, so warehouse trials using ASTM D2659-16 are recommended.

If Cable Jacketing Requires Both Flexibility and Environmental Stress Crack Resistance, Carbon Black Selection in Sclair MDPE 13-5 Compounds Becomes the Critical Variable

On cable jacketing lines producing buried fibre optic duct and low-voltage power cable sheathing, Sclair MDPE 13-5 is compounded with a furnace carbon black masterbatch at 5.5–6.0 wt%, yielding 2.2–2.4 wt% final carbon black content. The base resin occupies 93.5–94.0 wt% of the compound, with a hindered phenol antioxidant masterbatch added at 0.2–0.5 wt%. The compound is dried at 70–80°C for 2–4 h when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, because moisture above 0.15 wt% creates surface roughness and pinholes in the thin-walled jacket. Processing is carried out on a 90 mm single-screw extruder with L/D 25:1 and a crosshead die designed for tubing extrusion. Barrel temperatures range from 170°C in the feed zone to 200–220°C at the die, and the melt is drawn at a ratio of 1.2:1 to 1.5:1 before entering a water trough maintained at 10–25°C. Jacketed conductors and ducts are qualified under ASTM D1248-12 for polyethylene extrusion materials, ASTM D1693-15 for environmental stress crack resistance, IEC 60502-1 for power cable sheathing, and IEC 61386 for conduit systems. Finished product types include fibre optic duct for direct burial, outer jackets for medium-voltage power cables, and corrugated conduits for industrial cabling. Amine-based stabilizer additives must be excluded from these formulations because they interfere with oxidation induction time testing under ASTM D3895-19 and may accelerate surface cracking in wire compounds. Published data on this specific MDPE 13-5 jacketing compound is limited, so each cable manufacturer must run full type-test validation under the designated IEC 60502-1 test schedule.

Steel Pipe Coating Lines Replacing HDPE with MDPE 13-5: What Changes in Adhesion and Peel Resistance?

When steel pipe coating lines substitute Sclair MDPE 13-5 for a higher-density polyethylene topcoat in three-layer anti-corrosion systems, the extrusion window is shifted downward by the higher melt elasticity and lower melt temperature of MDPE. The topcoat compound is mixed at 93.0–94.0 wt% base resin, 5.5–6.0 wt% carbon black masterbatch, and 0.5–1.0 wt% stabilizer masterbatch. The steel pipe is shot-blasted to Sa 2.5 under ISO 8501-1, preheated to 180–220°C, and coated with an epoxy primer layer and an adhesive copolymer tie layer before the MDPE topcoat is applied. Topcoat thickness is maintained at 2.0–3.5 mm for mainline coating using a side-extruded flat sheet wrap process. The MDPE melt is processed at 200–230°C through a slit die with a die gap of 2.0–3.0 mm and laminated onto the pipe under a pressure roller at 0.4–0.8 MPa. Adhesion is tested by peel at 23°C using ISO 21809-1 and DIN 30670, with minimum peel strength typically specified at ≥35 N/cm between the adhesive layer and the topcoat. The lower stiffness of MDPE 13-5 improves low-temperature handling of coated pipe at −20°C but reduces resistance to indentation compared with HDPE, so stacking and trench backfill specifications require protective sand bedding. Finished coated products include long-line oil and gas transmission pipe, buried water mains, and offshore riser protection sleeves. Published data for this specific topcoat configuration is limited; start-up trials should include peel testing after 48 h water immersion and 28-day cathodic disbondment tests under ASTM G42-11.
