In gas distribution pipe manufacturing, NOVA Chemicals Novapol MDPE HD-2100-A is introduced to a single-screw extruder with a 30:1 L/D ratio, a deep-cut feed section, and a barrier screw with a downstream mixing section. The grade is characterised by a nominal density of 0.941 g/cm³ under ASTM D1505 and a melt index of 0.85 g/10 min under ASTM D1238 at 190 °C with 2.16 kg load. Melt temperature in the barrel zones is held between 170 °C and 210 °C, while the spiral mandrel pipe head is maintained at 190 °C to 220 °C. Carbon black masterbatch is added at 2.0 wt% to 2.5 wt% for ultraviolet stabilisation in buried and exposed gas service; dispersion levels must satisfy the carbon black requirement of ASTM D3350. The extrudate is drawn through vacuum sizing sleeves to control diameter and ovality, with wall thickness governed by SDR 9, 11, or 17 depending on pressure class. Gas distribution pipe is qualified under ASTM D2513, water service under ASTM D3035 or ISO 4427, and long-term hydrostatic strength is established through testing to ISO 9080. Butt fusion of the pipe is performed with a heater plate surface temperature near 225 °C and interfacial pressure of approximately 0.15 MPa according to the practices of ISO 21307; axial misalignment beyond 10% of local wall thickness produces a notch geometry that can accelerate slow crack growth. Published data for this exact grade in each SDR configuration is limited, so the pipe producer must verify the hydrostatic design basis and fusion cycle on production-scale lots before certification.
A recurring source of off-specification sheet in geomembrane production is the interaction between melt viscosity and roll-stack draw-down after the slot die. For MDPE HD-2100-A with an ASTM D1238 melt index of 0.85 g/10 min, transverse gauge variation of ±5% is more often produced by uneven melt distribution from the flex-lip die before the calender stack than by temperature differential across the finishing rolls. The sheet is processed at 0.75 mm to 3.0 mm thickness for landfill liner, heap leach pad, and agricultural pond applications. Melt temperature is held between 190 °C and 230 °C, with melt pump suction pressure kept stable and upstream extrusion output controlled to avoid pressure oscillations that generate transverse gauge bands. The downstream three-roll calender stack operates with finishing roll surface temperatures of 80 °C to 100 °C. Seaming by hot wedge or hot air requires consistent liner thickness because weld root penetration is inversely related to sheet gauge; a local thickness deficit of 0.2 mm can reduce seam shear strength below the specified minimum under ASTM D4437. In long-term service, stress-crack resistance is assessed by ASTM D1693 Condition C at 50 °C, and notched constant tensile load is evaluated under ASTM D5397. Oxidative stability is measured by oxidative induction time under ASTM D3895 at 200 °C. The compliance set for exposed geomembrane service is summarised in the table below.
| Property | Test method | Application relevance |
|---|---|---|
| Nominal thickness | ASTM D5199 | Controls weld root geometry and seam strength |
| Density | ASTM D1505 | Verifies medium-density classification and flexural behaviour |
| Melt index | ASTM D1238 | Controls sheet extrusion pressure and draw-down behaviour |
| Carbon black content | ASTM D4218 | Confirms carbon black loading for UV stabilisation |
| Oxidative induction time | ASTM D3895 | Detects antioxidant depletion after processing |
| Environmental stress-crack resistance | ASTM D1693 | Assesses slow crack growth resistance |
| Notched constant tensile load | ASTM D5397 | Evaluates brittle failure in liner service |
| Tensile properties | ASTM D6693 | Defines yield and elongation for seam design |
| Tear resistance | ASTM D1004 | Indicates damage tolerance during installation |
| Puncture resistance | ASTM D4833 | Assesses resistance to sharp aggregate and site debris |
Rotational moulding converts HD-2100-A into a sintered wall through a biaxial rotational process in which pellet is first ground on a high-speed pulveriser to a controlled powder size. Converter specifications commonly target 35 mesh retention below 5%, although the grinding gap must be set to avoid plate-out from oversized particles and to maintain dry flow under ASTM D1895 Method B. The mould is charged with powder and rotated in an oven; peak internal air temperature for MDPE is normally 185 °C to 195 °C. Above 205 °C, oxidative degradation starts at the inner surface and high-pressure oxidative induction time under ASTM D5885 at 150 °C falls rapidly. Wall thicknesses of 3 mm to 10 mm are conventional for chemical storage tanks, water tanks, and agricultural spray tanks. Cooling must not be forced-air-only; a water mist stage introduced at internal air temperature of 45 °C to 60 °C reduces flat-surface warpage. The moderate density of the resin permits a wider demoulding window than high-density polyethylene, but tanks are stress-relieved at ambient temperature for 24 h before structural evaluation under ASTM D1998. Chemical compatibility must be confirmed by the end user; published data for this grade with specific solvents is limited, so immersion testing under ASTM D543 is required for any chemical storage application.
Extrusion blow moulding of industrial chemical containers imposes a stress field different from pipe and geomembrane processing. The resin is run on an accumulator-head machine with parison programming, and die gap is opened to 2.5 mm to 4.0 mm in heavy-wall shoulder and handle regions. Melt temperature is maintained at 175 °C to 195 °C. Because the melt index is below 1.0 g/10 min, parison sag is reduced relative to fractional-melt HDPE, but top-load strength remains dependent on pinch-weld integrity and wall distribution. Drop impact testing for UN-rated containers follows ASTM D2463 or ASTM D5276; environmental stress-crack resistance of the finished container is tested under ASTM D2561, usually for 24 h to 48 h exposure to a specified stress-cracking agent. For food-contact applications, compliance must be verified under 21 CFR §177.1520 and EU Regulation 10/2011. Pellet drying is not normally required except where surface condensation has formed after cold storage.
The core layer in a five-layer silage film may be produced from MDPE HD-2100-A because its density contributes puncture resistance while the lower-melting outer layers provide sealability. The tubular blown film line uses a die diameter of 250 mm to 400 mm, die gap 1.8 mm to 2.2 mm, and blow-up ratio 2.0:1 to 2.8:1. The pellet must be blended with a fluoropolymer processing aid if melt fracture appears at high output, because the critical shear stress at the die lip is reached at lower screw speeds than with LLDPE. Frost line height is maintained at 3 to 5 die diameters; a higher frost line raises dart impact and lowers optical clarity. For agricultural film, dart impact is measured under ASTM D1709 Method B, tear resistance under ASTM D1922, and tensile properties under ASTM D882. Oxygen transmission rate is measured by ASTM D3985 at 23 °C and 0% RH. Published data for HD-2100-A in five-layer silage film oxygen transmission is limited, so the converter must generate barrier values on production line samples. The resin is not suitable for the sealant layer because its limited tack and lower melt elasticity prevent stable formation of a cling surface.
Compounds for industrial cable outer sheathing are prepared by melt blending the MDPE base with carbon black and a metal deactivator. Carbon black is added at 2.0 wt% to 2.5 wt%; dispersion is assessed by ASTM D5596 or by the microscopic procedure of ASTM D3350. The material is extruded through a crosshead die onto a cable core at melt temperature 190 °C to 220 °C. Jacket thickness is controlled to 0.8 mm to 3.0 mm depending on voltage class and installation environment, with tensile elongation after ageing under IEC 60811-501 at 100 °C for 168 h used as a release criterion. Because MDPE HD-2100-A is not inherently flame-retarded, halogen-free flame-retardant formulations require high loadings of aluminium trihydrate that may reduce tensile strength and impact resistance; published data for this exact configuration in HD-2100-A is limited, so the compounder must validate elongation and impact after ageing on production equipment. Wet-ageing may be specified under IEC 60811-401 for cables in waterlogged ducts; medium-density polyethylene resists hydrolysis because of its non-polar hydrocarbon backbone, but long-term performance depends on the stabiliser package and carbon black dispersion level.
Flexible secondary containment liners and temporary pipe stock can also be extruded as single-ply sheet from HD-2100-A when the application is governed by ASTM D4437; processing follows the same melt-temperature limits as geomembrane production.
