NOVA Chemicals MDPE HD-2100-U is a high-flow, UV-stabilized polyethylene platform specified for multi-cavity injection moulding. Lot-specific melt mass-flow rate should be confirmed under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 190 °C/2.16 kg; density is determined under ISO 1183-1:2019. Where the supplier Certificate of Analysis gives narrower melt-flow or additive ranges, those lot-specific values supersede the general processing envelopes stated below. The scenarios are restricted to downstream processes where this grade is commercially specified; no pipe-extrusion, blown-film, or rotational-moulding substitution should be inferred.
In thin-wall dairy and food-packaging injection, HD-2100-U is processed in hot-runner, valve-gated stack tools of 16 to 32 cavities. Compliance anchors include FDA 21 CFR 177.1520, EU Regulation 10/2011 with an overall migration limit of 10 mg/dm², and GB 4806.6-2016 for PRC food-contact declarations. Colour masterbatch is metered at 1.0–2.5 wt%; post-industrial regrind is capped at ≤20 wt%, and external mould release agents are excluded to prevent organoleptic transfer. The injection process uses accumulator-assisted machines with screw diameters from 28 mm to 45 mm, melt temperatures of 190–220 °C, mould temperatures of 8–20 °C, and injection velocities above 120 mm/s. Hold pressure is maintained at 55–70 MPa for 0.6–1.8 s to prevent sink marks at wall sections of 0.5–1.1 mm. Gate blush and short shots appear when valve-pin timing varies by more than 0.15 s across nozzles; this failure has been documented on high-cavitation stack tools in dairy packaging lines rather than under laboratory conditions. Terminal articles include round and rectangular dairy tubs, snap-on lids, and insert-moulded closures for cold-fill distribution.
Industrial pail moulding for liquid chemical and food-ingredient packaging uses HD-2100-U only after approval under UN Model Regulations Chapter 6.1 for 1H2 open-head articles, ADR/RID 6.1.3, and the IMDG Code for sea transport. Masterbatch addition is 1.0–2.0 wt%; calcium carbonate filler is excluded to avoid reducing environmental stress crack resistance, and additional UV-stabiliser masterbatch is not required because the as-supplied UV package is already present. Pre-drying at 70 °C for 1 h is required only when warehouse exposure exceeds 60% RH and surface condensation is visible on pellets. Moulding is performed on machines with clamp force from 8,000 kN to 15,000 kN for 20 L to 25 L pails. Melt temperature is 200–230 °C, mould temperature is 15–25 °C, injection pressure is 80–100 MPa, and hold pressure is 50–70 MPa for 8–12 s. Moving-platen deflection under full clamp load causes wall-thickness variation above 0.2 mm, identified as the common root cause of UN drop-test failure at 1.2 m under 1H2/Y classification. Finished products are open-head and tight-head pails from 5 L to 25 L for adhesives, coatings, lubricants, inks, and food ingredients that do not require an internal barrier film.
During high-cavitation closure manufacturing, HD-2100-U is processed under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520, EU Regulation 10/2011, and ISO 8317:2015 where child-resistant certification is specified. Colour masterbatch is metered at 1.5–2.5 wt%; slip concentrate is added at 500–1,000 ppm erucamide equivalent; external mould release agents are not advised because they reduce pad-print adhesion on closure top surfaces. Melt temperature is held at 210–230 °C, mould temperature at 10–20 °C, injection velocity between 80 mm/s and 120 mm/s, and hold pressure at 55–75 MPa for 0.8–2.0 s. Reducing gate diameter below 0.5 mm raises melt shear rate above 50,000 s⁻¹ and produces flow marks on tamper-evident band surfaces. On machines fitted with 20:1 L/D barrier screws, cycle time is screw-recovery-limited rather than cooling-limited when shot mass exceeds 60% of barrel capacity. Terminal parts are tamper-evident beverage caps, hinged dispensing closures for household chemicals, and over-caps for detergent bottles.

| Cold-fill dairy tubs with regrind | Colour 1.0–2.0 wt%; regrind 10–30 wt% | Melt 200–220 °C; mould 10–20 °C | FDA 21 CFR 177.1520; EU 10/2011 |
Returnable transit packaging and stackable agricultural crates manufactured with HD-2100-U are subject to ISO 8611-1:2011 for pallet performance, EN 13117-1 for reusable distribution containers, and REACH Annex XVII restrictions for heavy metals. Formulation for grey or black outdoor crates uses carbon black masterbatch at 2.0–3.0 wt%, post-industrial regrind between 30 wt% and 50 wt% in non-food structural layers, and no mineral filler to maintain low-temperature impact strength. Injection is performed on large-platen machines with clamp force calculated from projected area at 0.35 kN/mm² to 0.45 kN/mm²; melt temperature is 200–230 °C, mould temperature 15–25 °C, and holding pressure 60–80 MPa for 10–18 s. Direct sprue gating is replaced by sequential valve-gate arrays because centre-gated parts exhibit jetting and weld-line weakness at cross-rib intersections. Finished products include stack-and-nest totes, dairy crates, agricultural lugs, and pallet boxes; outdoor service beyond 24 months may require additional UV-stabiliser masterbatch beyond the as-supplied stabiliser system.
For housewares and small consumer articles, HD-2100-U is processed in multi-cavity tools where wall thickness varies from 1.0 mm to 2.5 mm. Food-contact housewares fall under EC 1935/2004 Art. 3 and EU Regulation 10/2011; toy-adjacent articles require EN 71-3 migration limits for chromium, cadmium, and lead. Masterbatch letdown is 1.0–3.0 wt%, with pearlescent or metallic pigments at higher loadings limited by a measurable drop in melt-pressure stability. Melt temperature is 190–220 °C, mould temperature 15–30 °C, injection velocity 50–100 mm/s, and holding pressure 50–70 MPa. A mould temperature differential below 5 K between moving and fixed halves is required to avoid post-mould warpage on flat-bottomed storage boxes; when exceeded, parts may exceed 1.0% bow on a 400 mm length after 48 h of post-mould stabilisation. Terminal articles are waste containers, storage boxes, cutlery trays, and toy-compliant blocks.
Closed-loop regrind use with HD-2100-U in cold-fill dairy packaging is bounded by EU Regulation 10/2011 and FDA 21 CFR 177.1520; post-industrial scrap generated from the same manufacturing line may be reintroduced at 10–30 wt% without altering food-contact compliance status if the scrap is controlled and uncontaminated. Colour masterbatch is added at 1.0–2.0 wt% to compensate for yellowness drift after multiple heat histories. The production process uses hot-runner tools with valve-gate sequencing, melt temperatures of 200–220 °C, mould temperatures of 10–20 °C, injection pressures of 70–90 MPa, and cooling times of 5–10 s. Batch-to-batch viscosity drift in regrind containing more than three heat cycles is detected as screw-torque fluctuation above 5%; stabilising the solids-conveying zone may require a 10 °C reduction in rear-zone temperature. Terminal products are cold-fill dairy tubs, lids, and portion cups with wall thicknesses from 0.5 mm to 1.2 mm.
