Application of Ningbo Dachuan Polymer ABS SM20NH

Melt-compounded Ningbo Dachuan Polymer ABS SM20NH is introduced into injection molding cells producing lower B-pillar trims, glovebox bins and door map pockets. For SM20NH specifically, published data for this configuration is limited; the following processing profile is representative of medium-flow ABS interior trim compounds and must be adjusted against the supplier certificate of analysis. The governing interior fire standard remains FMVSS 302 / ISO 3795, under which a horizontal burn rate exceeding 100 mm/min for test specimens thicker than 13 mm is considered nonconforming for occupant compartments. A representative production-floor formulation blends pre-dried SM20NH at 97.0–98.5 wt%, carbon black masterbatch at 1.0–2.0 wt% and an internal processing lubricant at 0.3–0.8 wt%. Pre-drying in a desiccant hot-air dryer at 80 °C for 3–4 h reduces moisture to below 0.05 wt%, preventing splay marks at gate areas. Barrel set-points on a three-zone reciprocating screw are profiled at 220 °C, 235 °C and 245 °C from feed throat to nozzle, with the screw temperature maintained by oil tempering at 40–60 °C. Mold temperatures of 50–70 °C preserve weld-line strength at boss and rib intersections. On production machines with clamp force from 1600 kN to 2200 kN, cycle times typically settle between 8.5 s and 10.5 s for nominal wall sections of 2.0–2.5 mm. Dimensional stability is verified against ISO 527-2:2012 for tensile modulus and ISO 178:2019 for flexural modulus, while heat deflection under a 1.8 MPa flexural stress is measured to ASTM D648-18 Method B. A documented processing weakness exists in high-gloss inner frame regions where tunnel-gate blush appears when injection velocity exceeds 35 mm/s during the final 20% of filling; reducing velocity below this value suppresses the visible gate defect without delamination. Terminal parts in this segment include glovebox bins with integrated hinge bosses, B-pillar lower trim with clip towers and door map pockets with living-hinge retention clips.

Does SM20NH Require a UL 94 Stabilizer Package for Small Kitchen Appliance Enclosures?

Before SM20NH is selected for electric-kettle bases, vacuum-cleaner motor housings or benchtop appliance frames, the end-use flammability classification must be fixed. Unmodified ABS has an HB classification under UL 94, which is unsuitable when IEC 60335-1 Clause 30.2 requires resistance to ignition or a V-0 rating at the final wall thickness. If the enclosure is specified at 1.5 mm or 2.0 mm and a V-0 outcome is required, SM20NH is recompounded with a brominated flame retardant and antimony trioxide synergist on a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with L/D of 40:1 to 44:1. Typical addition levels for this class of ABS fall between 18 wt% and 25 wt% total flame-retardant masterbatch, depending on bromine content and matrix melt flow. The antimony trioxide synergist is typically maintained at a bromine-to-antimony molar ratio of 3:1. Published data for SM20NH in this specific UL 94 recompounded configuration is limited, so laboratory-scale cone calorimeter screening under ISO 5660-1:2015 is recommended before production lot qualification. The compounding zone operates at 180 °C to 220 °C to avoid early dehydrohalogenation of the brominated species; screw speed is maintained between 300 min⁻¹ and 450 min⁻¹ with atmospheric and vacuum venting to strip volatiles. The recompounded pellets are dried again at 80 °C for 3–4 h before injection molding. Barrel temperatures of 210 °C to 235 °C avoid plate-out on the mold, and mold temperatures of 40–60 °C maintain acceptable surface gloss without excessive residual stress. Weld lines in framed benchtop appliance bases are a principal failure mode; a full radius on the nozzle tip and a widened runner diameter of 6 mm to 8 mm reduce melt fracture. The terminal components are electric-kettle bases, stand-mixer motor covers, and vacuum-cleaner canister housings.

Gate Freeze and Weld-Line Strength Limits in Thin-Wall Power Adapter Enclosures

Thin-wall power adapter housings molded from SM20NH are governed by IEC 62368-1 and UL 746C for internal and external enclosures, with wall thicknesses typically between 0.8 mm and 1.2 mm. At these wall sections, the flow-length-to-thickness ratio can exceed 150:1, making gate freeze and weld-line strength the two controlling process constraints. SM20NH must be dried to 0.03 wt% moisture or lower and processed at a melt temperature verified by ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C/10 kg before trial. The formulation for V-0 thin-wall applications normally includes the same brominated FR masterbatch system at 18–25 wt%, with no external lubricant above 0.3 wt% to prevent gate delamination. Injection speeds of 180–250 mm/s are required to fill the cavity before gate freeze, but excessive shear raises the melt temperature above 250 °C and risks surface streaking near the subrunner. Mold temperature is maintained at 50–70 °C to promote skin-layer solidification at the snap-fit bosses. Gate diameters below 0.6 mm create premature freeze-off when wall stock drops below 1.0 mm; a valve-gate or tunnel-gate diameter of 0.8–1.2 mm is preferred on production tooling. Weld lines at the mating planes of adapter shells are tested under ISO 527-2:2012 tensile impact and ISO 179-1:2023 Charpy impact at 23 °C. The terminal parts are power adapters, wall chargers, router housings and compact power supply enclosures.

In non-pressure drainage applications, Ningbo Dachuan Polymer ABS SM20NH is evaluated for injection-molded DWV fittings, P-traps, coupling nuts and floor-drain collars. Published data for SM20NH in cell class use under ASTM D3965 is limited, so the molder must obtain a certified cell classification before installation. The governing product standards are ASTM D2661 for Schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe and fittings in the United States and ISO 15493 for plastics piping systems in industrial applications. Thick-section molding introduces sink-mark risk at sections above 4.0 mm; packing pressure is therefore held at 60–80 MPa for 6–10 s with gate sealing confirmed by screw cushion stability. Barrel temperatures for fittings are profiled at 200 °C, 215 °C, and 225 °C from feed to nozzle to prevent yellowing in long residence times. Mold temperatures of 40–80 °C maintain dimensional control at the sealing faces, where leakage testing under positive pressure of 0.2 bar to 0.6 bar verifies joint integrity. Solvent cement compatibility follows ASTM D2235 for ABS joints; the cement contains methyl ethyl ketone and cyclohexanone, which etch the fitting surface to form an interference fit. Molding release agents must be removed at the joint faces because residual silicone or zinc stearate interferes with fusion. The recompounded material is not recommended for pressure service unless long-term hydrostatic testing per ISO 15493 is run at 60 °C and the predicted lower confidence limit exceeds the design stress. Terminal parts are ABS DWV couplings, P-traps, floor-drain collars and solvent-cement-compatible sanitary fittings.

When SM20NH Replaces High-Impact Polystyrene in Injection-Molded Toy Shells

A documented substitution case arises when SM20NH is selected instead of high-impact polystyrene in toy shell components, ride-on body panels and interlocking block housings. The driving regulatory framework is EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 for migration of 19 elements and REACH Annex XVII Entry 51 for phthalates, while the U.S. market requires ASTM F963-23 mechanical drop-impact testing. The polymer is pre-dried at 80 °C for 2–4 h to below 0.05 wt%, then blended with 2.0–4.0 wt% color masterbatch in a central-conveyed press-side mixer. In contrast to HIPS, SM20NH has a higher melt-viscosity plateau in the shear-rate region of 10³ s⁻¹; this requires a nozzle melt temperature of 220–240 °C and injection pressure 10–15% higher than an equivalent HIPS tool. Mold temperatures of 35–50 °C produce glossy surfaces without sink marks on ribbed bosses. Sharp-edge and drop-impact failure modes are evaluated with ASTM F963-23 Clause 8.7 misuse testing and EN 71-1:2014+A1:2018 physical and mechanical properties. The terminal parts are toy block shells, ride-on exterior panels and interlocking enclosure halves. ABS SM20NH should not be combined with amine-based pigment masterbatches because residual amines can induce molecular-chain scission and surface haze during repeated heat cycling.

Extrusion and thermoforming of SM20NH sheet for protective cases begins with pellet pre-drying at 80 °C for 3–4 h and a moisture target below 0.05 wt%. Sheet production on a single-screw extruder with L/D of 30:1 to 36:1 and a barrier screw uses barrel profile 200 °C, 215 °C, 225 °C, 230 °C, and a screen pack of 100/150/200 mesh to trap gels and unmelts. Screw speed is maintained between 60 min⁻¹ and 90 min⁻¹, with motor load typically held at 70–80% and melt pressure before the screen pack at 18–25 MPa. The polished three-roll stack is maintained at 80–95 °C to control sheet gloss and orientation. Thermoforming is carried out at sheet surface temperatures of 160–180 °C, with plug-assisted vacuum forming preferred for draw ratios deeper than 0.7:1. Deep-draw failures in ABS sheet often arise from excessive sheet sag at temperatures above 185 °C; maintaining top and bottom infrared zones within ±5 °C reduces thickness variance. The final parts are instrument cases, luggage shells, tool-protective covers and portable equipment enclosures. Compliance with the RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II is verified by XRF screening for cadmium and lead, and with ISO 4589-2 limiting oxygen index only when specified by the customer.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Ningbo Dachuan Polymer ABS SM20NH is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-moulding grade supplied by Ningbo Dachuan Polymer Co., Ltd. The material is identified under ISO 1043-2:2011 as ABS; the SM20NH code is a commercial designation and is not itself an ISO 2580-1:2002 designation block. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, and the numerical envelope presented below therefore represents class-typical values for a 18–24 cm³/10 min unfilled ABS rather than manufacturer-certified SM20NH values. Filler content, additive package, and exact rheology must be confirmed against the batch certificate of analysis before production release.

The resin is typically supplied as cylindrical pellets in moisture-resistant bags or octabins. Because ABS sorb moisture from ambient air, storage at 23 °C and 50 % RH is standard; partially used containers should be resealed immediately. Moisture above 0.02 % by weight can vaporise during plasticating and produce silver streaks, splay, and surface blisters on moulded parts. A desiccant dryer with a dew point of −30 °C or lower is the reference drying method before processing.

This class-typical envelope supports injection-moulded enclosures, appliance housings, interior trim components, and general industrial covers where short glass-fibre reinforcement is not required. The absence of manufacturer-certified SM20NH values means that any application using the table alone carries a qualification risk; the supplier certificate and first-article testing on production tooling are the operative acceptance route.

Melt Processing Boundaries of Unfilled ABS in Production-Scale Injection Moulding

Before plasticating, the pellets are dried in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 2–4 h to a residual moisture content below 0.02 %. Drying above 90 °C or extended hopper residence after drying can shift the polymer toward yellowing and generate acrid decomposition odours. The dried material should be conveyed directly to the machine throat with minimal exposure to ambient humidity above 60 % RH.

Barrel settings on a conventional single-screw injection-moulding machine with a 20:1 L/D general-purpose screw and a compression ratio of 2.0–2.5:1 typically begin at 180–200 °C in the rear zone, 210–230 °C in the centre zone, 220–240 °C in the front zone, and 225–245 °C at the nozzle. The melt temperature measured with a needle pyrometer is held between 220 °C and 250 °C. Melt temperatures below 220 °C can restrict thin-wall fill and raise injection pressure, while temperatures above 250 °C accelerate degradation of the butadiene phase and shift appearance toward brown streaking.

Mould temperature is controlled between 40 °C and 70 °C with pressurised water units. Higher mould temperatures in this range improve gloss, knit-line strength, and dimensional stability but extend cycle time. Lower mould temperatures reduce cycle time but increase residual stress and can reduce notched Izod impact at sharp corners. The injection velocity profile is set according to flow length-to-wall-thickness ratio; for a 2 mm wall section, a fill time of 1–2 s is class-typical. Transfer from velocity control to hold pressure is set at 95–98 % of total filled volume to avoid overpacking, flash, and gate-vestige cracking.

Hold pressure is typically 50–70 % of injection pressure, with hold time established by gate-seal time. A cushion of 2–5 mm is maintained ahead of the screw tip to avoid cushion loss and shot-size drift. Back pressure is set at 0.3–0.7 MPa to homogenise the melt without adding excessive shear heat. Screw recovery time should not exceed the cooling timer; otherwise barrel residence time accumulates, and black specks or acrid odour may appear during extended hot-run stops.

Residence time above 5 min at 240 °C is a practical boundary for unfilled ABS of this class. When total barrel hold-up exceeds five shot weights, a purging sequence using a cast acrylic or commercial ABS purging compound should be scheduled before colour or lot changes. Batch-to-batch viscosity drift is detected by monitoring screw recovery time, transfer pressure, and fill time; a shift greater than 10 % on the same machine and tool is an indication that the certificate of analysis should be reviewed before temperature or pressure compensation is attempted.

Test plaques and tensile bars used for incoming-material verification should be prepared according to ISO 294-1:2017 on a two-plate mould. Specimens are conditioned at 23 °C and 50 % RH for at least 16 h before destructive testing. Tensile tests are run according to ISO 527-2:2012 using type 1A specimens at a test speed of 50 mm/min. Notched Izod bars are tested under ISO 180:2019 after notching in the edgewise orientation.

For multi-cavity tools, runner balancing is more influential than barrel temperature when the hot runner manifold has temperature differences above 5 °C. A hot runner system operated at 230–240 °C at the manifold and 240–250 °C at the tips should be tuned by short-shot progression rather than by uniform temperature increase. Gate-stringing and drooling from hot tip gates are corrected in 10 °C incremental reductions at the tip, not by raising mould temperature.

Compared with high-flow ABS grades having melt volume-flow rates above 30 cm³/10 min, a 18–24 cm³/10 min class resin generally retains higher notched Izod impact and better weld-line strength but exhibits shorter spiral flow. This distinction appears in multi-cavity housings with long cold runners, where high-flow grades may fill at reduced injection pressure but sacrifice impact at the weld line. High-heat ABS grades modified with alpha-methylstyrene or maleimide comonomer push Vicat softening above 110 °C; they require melt temperatures of 250–270 °C and are less tolerant of extended barrel residence time than the SM20NH class. Flame-retardant ABS grades reaching UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm contain brominated or phosphorus-based additives, increase density to 1.17–1.20 g/cm³, and often reduce notched Izod impact. These grades cannot be assumed interchangeable with SM20NH without a full tool trial and mechanical test.

Comparison of unfilled ABS classes commonly encountered in injection moulding
ABS class Melt volume-flow rate Vicat B50 Notched Izod impact Processing consequence
    SM20NH melt-flow class 18–24 cm³/10 min 95–105 °C 15–28 kJ/m² Intermediate fill; moderate impact for enclosures and covers
    High-flow general purpose 30–45 cm³/10 min 90–100 °C 10–18 kJ/m² Faster fill in thin walls; lower weld-line strength
    High-heat ABS 8–20 cm³/10 min 110–120 °C 12–22 kJ/m² Higher melt temperature; more residence-time sensitive
    Flame-retardant V-0 ABS 15–30 cm³/10 min 90–105 °C 10–20 kJ/m² Density and rheology altered by additives; screw recovery affected

The table values are class-typical and are not manufacturer specifications. Exact product differentiation requires the SM20NH certificate of analysis, a retained moulded-tensile dataset, and production tooling trials because commercial ABS grades within the same melt-flow class can differ in rubber particle size, graft phase morphology, and lubricant package.

What Limits the Use of SM20NH in Continuous Heat and Solvent Contact?

General-purpose ABS is an amorphous styrene-acrylonitrile matrix with a dispersed polybutadiene rubber phase. The polybutadiene phase is vulnerable to oxidative degradation during long-term heat exposure. For unfilled ABS, the UL 746B relative thermal index for impact retention is often between 60 °C and 80 °C; published SM20NH-specific UL 746B data is limited, and the relative thermal index should not be inferred without a certified yellow card. Continuous exposure above 80 °C in air can produce progressive loss of notched Izod impact, yellowing, and surface microcracking before tensile strength decline becomes measurable.

Chemical contact is governed by the styrene-acrylonitrile phase. Ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, and chlorinated solvents are generally aggressive to ABS and can cause environmental stress cracking in parts with high moulded-in stress. Methyl ethyl ketone and toluene are particularly active in crack propagation. Environmental stress cracking should be evaluated using ISO 22088-2:2006 with a curved-strip fixture and the actual service chemical; a pass at one strain level does not guarantee compatibility at higher residual stress. Alcohols and dilute aqueous acids are generally less aggressive, but the effect of any colour concentrate or lubricant package must be considered separately.

Outdoor use without ultraviolet stabilization is not recommended for natural ABS. Ultraviolet exposure causes surface chalking, gloss loss, and embrittlement. If exterior use is proposed, accelerated weathering under ISO 4892-2:2013 or ASTM G155-13 followed by notched Izod testing is required before homologation. Painting or metallisation can reduce UV degradation, but adhesion must be confirmed by ISO 2409:2020 cross-cut testing or the relevant automotive company standard rather than by base-resin class alone.

Food-contact, medical, and potable-water applications are not implied by the SM20NH designation. If such use is required, migration testing under FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 or EU Regulation 10/2011 is mandatory. The supplier must provide a substance declaration and a RoHS statement referencing Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH SVHC content above 0.1 % w/w. A supplier statement of compliance is not a substitute for independent extraction testing on finished articles.

For release of each incoming lot, the certificate of analysis should include melt volume-flow rate against ISO 1133-1:2022, notched Izod impact against ISO 180:2019, Vicat softening temperature against ISO 306:2022, and ash content if the material is filled or modified. Because the SM20NH designation alone does not define flame retardancy, UL 94 certification must be requested at the intended minimum wall thickness, commonly 1.5 mm or 2.0 mm. Colour concentrates can shift melt-flow rate and reduce impact; therefore colour-matched material should be re-qualified on production tooling with full mechanical testing rather than on laboratory test plaques alone.
