    More Introduction

Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer resin supplied under the designation Nanjing Lihan ABS S9000EP is introduced as a pelletized injection-moulding compound for electroplating and high-appearance rigid components. The product is manufactured by Nanjing Lihan Chemical Co., Ltd. and belongs to the medium-flow ABS group in which melt viscosity and rubber-phase morphology are adjusted for uniform etchability in chromic acid-based pre-plating systems. The terpolymer comprises a styrene-acrylonitrile continuous phase and a dispersed polybutadiene rubber phase; rubber particle size distribution, graft ratio, and crosslink density of the rubber particles are the key structural variables controlling plate adhesion. In production-scale parts, a shift in rubber particle size toward the low end reduces impact resistance, while a broad distribution creates non-uniform micro-roughness after etching. The grade is typically supplied as natural pellets; custom masterbatch additions are possible but must avoid halogenated release agents and low-molecular-weight amide slips, because surface-active additives can inhibit wetting in the electroless deposition bath. The base resin is compounded on a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with L/D ratio of 40:1; the rubber particle size distribution is set mainly by polymerization and graft reaction rather than by compounding. Published data for this specific configuration is limited to the supplier’s certificate of analysis, so the following sections present class-level reference data and process boundaries rather than a substitute for lot-specific verification.

What specification framework governs the rated properties of Nanjing Lihan ABS S9000EP?

The following test designations are used to establish specification compliance for S9000EP and adjacent medium-flow electroplating ABS materials. Melt volume-flow rate is determined under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220°C with a 10 kg piston load; density is measured according to ISO 1183-1:2019; tensile properties follow ASTM D638-14 or ISO 527-2:2012; flexural modulus is obtained by ISO 178:2019; notched Izod impact is measured using ISO 180:2023 or ASTM D256-23; heat deflection temperature is assessed by ISO 75-2:2013 at 1.80 MPa; Vicat softening temperature is measured under ISO 306:2022 using method B50; and flammability is classified under UL 94. The class reference ranges for medium-flow electroplating ABS are as follows: melt volume-flow rate 18 cm³/10 min to 26 cm³/10 min; density 1.04 g/cm³ to 1.07 g/cm³; tensile yield stress 40 MPa to 50 MPa; flexural modulus 2200 MPa to 2700 MPa; notched Izod impact at 23°C 20 kJ/m² to 30 kJ/m²; HDT at 1.80 MPa 94°C to 102°C; Vicat B50 temperature 100°C to 108°C. These ranges describe the product class and are not a direct S9000EP certificate; lot-specific values must be confirmed against the manufacturer’s certificate of analysis.

Pre-drying of S9000EP is required whenever the pellet container has been exposed to ambient air at relative humidity above 60% for more than 2 h. Desiccant-bed drying at 80°C for 3 h to 4 h is typical; the target moisture content before melt processing is below 0.05% by Karl Fischer titration. Moisture above 0.10% can hydrolyze the SAN matrix during plastication, producing splay, surface streaks, and a reduction in weld-line strength that becomes visible after plating. Reciprocating-screw injection moulding machines with screw L/D ratio of 20:1 to 24:1 and compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 are adequate for this grade. Melt temperature at the nozzle is generally controlled between 230°C and 250°C, while the barrel profile from feed throat to metering zone is set at 210°C to 240°C. Excessive melt temperature above 260°C can accelerate degradation of the polybutadiene phase and produce yellowing or reduced plate adhesion after etching. Mould surface temperature should be maintained at 50°C to 80°C. At mould temperatures below 50°C, rapid skin formation freezes orientation and creates a high residual stress layer; after subsequent etching, this layer may generate micro-crazes or non-uniform anchor pit formation, especially at gate and weld-line regions. No silicone, mineral oil, or ester-based mould release should be applied because surface contamination prevents uniform acid wetting and causes skip plating. If release is unavoidable, a dry-powder release based on zinc stearate can be used at the lowest effective level, but the parts must then be solvent-degreased and acid-washed before racking.

When S9000EP replaces general-purpose ABS or PC/ABS in an existing electroplating line

Substitution of S9000EP for a general-purpose ABS in an existing electroplating line requires a process validation because etch severity must be matched to the grade’s butadiene particle size distribution. General-purpose ABS often has a broader rubber particle size distribution and higher oligomer residue, leading to a wider distribution of surface anchor sites after chromic acid etching. The etch bath time for S9000EP may be reduced by 1 min to 2 min relative to general-purpose ABS at the same bath temperature to avoid over-etching and surface collapse near ribs. Compared with high-heat ABS, S9000EP is expected to exhibit lower Vicat softening temperature and lower sag resistance at elevated service temperatures; however, the etch window is more stable and less dependent on pre-swell. Compared with PC/ABS, S9000EP does not require solvent pre-swell or modified etch chemistry to generate mechanical anchor sites. PC/ABS offers a higher continuous service temperature and greater low-temperature impact, but its electroplating process usually needs a solvent pre-swell step that carries volatile organic compound emissions and requires tight control of residence time because polycarbonate hydrolysis can occur at high acid temperature. S9000EP therefore reduces process complexity in standard ABS plating lines but is not a direct substitute for PC/ABS in applications requiring heat deflection above 110°C or notched Izod impact at −30°C above 40 kJ/m².

Typical usage of S9000EP includes decorative electroplating of plumbing handles and escutcheons, shower trim, appliance control panels, cosmetic closure shells, and automotive interior bezels that are subsequently plated with copper-nickel-chromium systems. Moulded components are pre-plated through a sequence of degreasing, chromic acid etching, neutralization, palladium-tin activation, acceleration, electroless nickel or electroless copper deposition, and electrolytic build-up. The grade is selected where the plated surface must withstand repeated thermal cycling, humidity exposure, and mechanical handling without blistering or loss of adhesion. In service, plated S9000EP parts are generally not recommended for continuous exposure above 80°C if under high load, because the ABS substrate loses stiffness as temperature approaches HDT. The electroplated metallic shell contributes only limited structural reinforcement; creep and stress relaxation of the polymer core remain controlling factors for mechanical performance. Parts with deep recesses and undercuts require auxiliary anodes or conforming anodes because shielding effects in electrolytic plating can create thin deposits that fail in thermal shock testing under ISO 4525. The material is not recommended for immersion degreasing in ketones, esters, or chlorinated solvents; if such solvents contact the moulded surface, stress crazing may occur and become visible after bright nickel deposition.

Rheological and thermal boundaries for electroplating-grade ABS

Lot-to-lot rheological consistency of S9000EP is monitored by capillary rheometry at 240°C and a shear rate of 1000 s−1; a deviation exceeding 15% in apparent viscosity against the reference lot is considered significant for thin-wall tools. In multi-cavity tools above 8 cavities, shear-induced melt temperature rise can vary between cavities, causing differential surface stress and non-uniform etch pit density. Tooling should include fill simulation using viscosity data at three shear rates rather than a single MFR point, because medium-flow ABS is shear thinning and single-point data does not predict gate pressure or fill time for complex parts. The thermal processing window for S9000EP is constrained at the lower end by poor replication of micro-textured surfaces below 230°C and at the upper end by rubber-phase degradation above 260°C. For parts with wall thickness below 1.2 mm, the melt temperature may be raised to 250°C, but residence time must be limited to 5 min or less. Hot-runner systems should use internally heated nozzles with tight temperature control; external heating bands with dead spots can create degraded resin pockets that later appear as black specks in plated surfaces. If regrind is used, the addition level should not exceed 20% by mass, and the regrind must be dried to the same moisture target as virgin resin. Higher regrind levels can reduce notched Izod impact and broaden the etch pit distribution due to thermal history effects on the butadiene phase.

Etching of S9000EP is the highest-risk process step because the anchor layer is created by selective oxidation of butadiene rubber particles on the moulded surface. A typical chromic acid/sulfuric acid bath contains chromic acid 380 g/L to 420 g/L and sulfuric acid 180 g/L to 220 g/L. Bath temperature is maintained at 65°C to 70°C and must be controlled within ±2°C; at temperatures above 72°C, over-etching can enlarge anchor pits to the point of surface collapse and produce dull or rough plated finishes. Immersion time is typically 5 min to 10 min; longer immersion may be required for parts with high gloss surfaces or thicker skin layers, but the time should be adjusted in 1 min increments. Chromic acid concentration below 350 g/L reduces etching rate and may produce skip plating at ribs and gate areas; concentrations above 450 g/L increase oxidation rate non-linearly and can create a brittle surface layer. The neutralization step after etching uses a reducing acid such as 10 g/L to 30 g/L sodium bisulfite or equivalent, followed by rinsing. Incomplete neutralization leaves hexavalent chromium residue that poisons the palladium-tin activator and produces skip plating. The palladium-tin activator must be free of high levels of stannous tin oxidation products; a fall in activation density below 80% of the initial palladium concentration correlates with lower electroless copper coverage in blind holes. Electroless nickel or copper thickness is controlled between 0.3 µm and 0.5 µm before electrolytic build-up; thinner films increase electrical resistance in rack plating, while thicker films can mask surface defects but add cost. Adhesion testing of plated S9000EP is commonly performed by thermal cycling according to ISO 4525 or by peel testing; a minimum peel strength of 0.1 N/mm to 0.3 N/mm is typical for decorative electroplated ABS, but exact acceptance limits are set by the end-use specification.

Production experience on injection moulding lines indicates that S9000EP parts with a projected area of 0.05 m² can be moulded on machines with clamp force of 100 t to 150 t, assuming a cavity pressure of 300 bar to 400 bar. Mould design should provide draft angles above 1° for electroplated surfaces because the plated layer adds thickness and reduces effective clearance. Ejection systems should avoid pin marks on visible surfaces; pins on the unplated backside are preferable. If automated degating is used, the gate remnant should be below 0.1 mm because a prominent gate scar remains visible after plating even after polishing. Hydraulic injection units with open-loop control can produce shot-to-shot melt-pressure variation exceeding 10%, which is sufficient to alter packing density and surface stress. Closed-loop injection speed control is recommended for S9000EP parts that will be electroplated because consistent cavity pressure reduces the variability of etch response. In multi-cavity tools, a maximum cavity imbalance of 10% in fill time is typical; values above 15% can create inter-cavity differences in plate adhesion after the same etch cycle.

Compliance documentation shifts the burden from property data to lot traceability

Regulatory compliance for Nanjing Lihan ABS S9000EP must be verified at the lot level because compounding additives and colorants can alter threshold substances. Standard references include EU RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II for lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB, and PBDE; REACH 1907/2006 for SVHC communication and restriction obligations; and, when food-contact use is intended, FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 or EU 10/2011 for overall migration testing. The supplier should provide a safety data sheet with Section 15 regulatory information, REACH registration confirmation, and a RoHS supplier declaration. For electroplated parts, the final component also falls under plating-bath environmental regulations because chromium plating baths are subject to authorization and wastewater limits for chromium and nickel. If migration testing is required, the plated part is usually extracted with food simulants according to the intended contact time and temperature; the unplated backside may require a lacquer or barrier layer to limit residual styrene and acrylonitrile migration. Failure to obtain lot-specific compliance documentation before production can lead to rejection under automotive or consumer goods audit protocols. S9000EP is not intended for direct medical implant applications; its use is limited to external housings and decorative surfaces unless a full ISO 10993 biocompatibility assessment is completed for the final device.

Plating lines that process S9000EP in the same rack as mineral-filled ABS or glass-filled ABS should separate the materials at the etching stage, because filler residues and glass fibers can contaminate the chromic acid bath and produce insoluble sludges that alter bath density. The etch bath should be filtered continuously through a 1 µm to 5 µm filter and analysed daily for trivalent chromium accumulation; high trivalent chromium reduces bath activity and requires electrolytic regeneration or partial bath replacement. Rack contacts should be maintained at current density below 1.5 A/dm² during initial electrolytic copper deposition to prevent burn marks along contact edges. These operational constraints are more significant for S9000EP electroplating than for unplated moulding applications, because the final plated surface magnifies any substrate defect or bath-control deviation.
