    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Nanjing Delong PC/ABS CS9000 is supplied as a pelletised polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene blend intended for injection moulding and profile extrusion. The grade designation CS9000 identifies an unfilled alloy system in which polycarbonate contributes heat resistance, dimensional stability, and tensile modulus, while the ABS phase modifies melt processability, room-temperature impact response, and chemical resistance. The product is not a flame-retardant compound and is not supplied as a medical-grade resin; end-use qualification remains the responsibility of the moulder or original equipment manufacturer.

Incoming resin characterisation follows lot-level certificate-of-analysis review. Moisture content is determined by ISO 15512:2019, melt volume-flow rate by ISO 1133-1:2022, and ash content by ISO 3451-1:2019. Because PC/ABS alloys are hygroscopic, storage in sealed, moisture-barrier packaging is required before processing. Published data for this specific CS9000 configuration is limited in publicly available literature; the technical values discussed in this document are class-typical ranges for unfilled PC/ABS and should be confirmed against the manufacturer’s lot certificate.

What Limits the Melt Processing Window for CS9000?

Residual moisture is the primary processing constraint. At barrel temperatures of 250 °C to 270 °C, hydrolytic degradation of the polycarbonate phase becomes measurable when pellet moisture exceeds 0.02 wt%; surface splay, screw torque fluctuation, and loss of notched impact are observed on production-scale machines. Dehumidifying hopper dryers with dew point below -30 °C are specified for drying at 80 °C to 100 °C for 3 h to 4 h. On injection moulding machines with clamp force from 800 kN to 12,000 kN, melt temperature measured at the nozzle is typically held at 240 °C to 270 °C; mould temperature between 60 °C and 90 °C controls surface gloss and post-mould shrinkage. The melt volume-flow rate for unfilled PC/ABS of this class after drying is commonly 12 cm³/10 min to 22 cm³/10 min at 260 °C/5 kg. Material with MVR outside this band may indicate moisture uptake, improper regrind ratio, or lot-to-lot variation in ABS rubber content. Regrind levels above 20 wt% are not recommended for critical appearance parts because property drift in notched impact and colour shift occur.

For compounding or profile extrusion, twin-screw extruders with L/D ratio 36:1 to 44:1 are used; screw speed 300 rpm to 600 rpm and temperature profile 230 °C to 260 °C maintain stable viscosity without excessive shear heating. Distributive mixing elements are preferred over high-intensity neutral kneading blocks because the polycarbonate phase is shear-sensitive; local melt temperature above 290 °C initiates molecular weight reduction detectable by a shift in melt volume-flow rate of more than 15% from virgin pellets.

In thin-wall electronic enclosures with nominal wall thickness 1.2 mm to 2.0 mm, the material is introduced at a volumetric shot size corresponding to 40% to 70% of barrel capacity to avoid extended residence time. Shortening residence time below 5 min at melt temperature reduces polycarbonate chain scission and the associated drop in notched Charpy impact. Mould-filling simulation is recommended in place of fixed spiral-flow acceptance criteria; published data for this specific CS9000 configuration is limited, but class-typical flow length for unfilled PC/ABS at 2 mm wall thickness under 80 MPa injection pressure is 80 cm to 120 cm. Gates should be positioned away from visible surfaces; unbalanced filling creates weld lines with local impact retention as low as 30% of nominal values. The grade is selected for carriers, housings, and trim components where the combination of modulus and low-shrinkage surface finish is required without fibre reinforcement. Weld-line strength is controlled by melt-front temperature and pack pressure. In multi-gate moulds, the notched impact at a weld line can fall to 30% to 50% of the bulk value, depending on gate distance and melt-front convergence. Mould temperature below 60 °C freezes the melt front before molecular diffusion across the weld plane, producing visible v-notch lines and reduced ductility.

Evaluating CS9000 Against PC/PBT in Thin-Wall Enclosure Tooling

CS9000 differs from semi-crystalline PC/PBT alloys in shrinkage anisotropy and moisture sensitivity. PC/PBT systems typically exhibit lower dry-as-moulded shrinkage but higher differential shrinkage due to crystallisation; unfilled PC/ABS of this class has mould shrinkage of 0.5% to 0.7% in flow direction and 0.5% to 0.8% cross-flow. Tooling designed for PC/PBT may require gate and runner modifications when CS9000 is substituted because the amorphous PC/ABS melt front is more sensitive to abrupt wall-thickness changes; hesitation lines and flow marks appear if injection velocity is below 50 mm/s. On multi-cavity hot-runner tools with 2-cavity or 4-cavity layouts, cavity-to-cavity weight variation should be held below 0.3% to maintain dimensional capability. The product is distinguished from high-flow PC/ABS grades by a broader mould-temperature latitude: surface gloss remains stable from 60 °C to 90 °C, whereas high-flow grades may show gloss shift below 70 °C. This is relevant for unpainted interior parts.

The comparative property matrix below lists class-typical values, not lot-specific CS9000 certification data. When PC/PBT is replaced, the moulding window must be re-established because the amorphous PC/ABS melt exhibits no crystallisation plateau and solidifies without the sharp viscosity transition characteristic of PBT-rich phases.

When CS9000 Replaces Flame-Retardant PC/ABS in Consumer Electronics Housings

Substitution is permissible only after end-product flammability evaluation at the minimum wall thickness. Unfilled CS9000 class materials are not inherently flame-retardant; class-typical UL 94 classification is HB at 1.5 mm. Flame-retardant PC/ABS grades containing phosphate ester additives achieve V-0 at 1.5 mm or 2.0 mm under UL 94, but phosphate esters reduce heat deflection temperature and can increase mould deposit formation. If an enclosure requires V-0 at 1.5 mm, CS9000 should not be substituted without an end-use burning test and glow-wire evaluation according to IEC 60695-2-12:2021. For applications with no flame rating requirement or with internal circuitry meeting IEC 62368-1:2023 limited power source provisions, CS9000 is used to avoid the lower ductility and higher density associated with flame-retardant grades. Comparative tracking index and hot-wire ignition should be tested per IEC 60112:2020 if the housing functions as a primary insulation barrier. The absence of halogenated flame retardants does not confer a UL 94 V-0 rating by itself; the term “halogen-free” refers to formulation chemistry, not flammability performance.

Impact Retention After Accelerated Heat Ageing

Accelerated ageing at 100 °C for 500 h is used by automotive interior suppliers to evaluate antioxidant package and rubber-phase stability. For unfilled PC/ABS of this composition class, notched Charpy impact retention after 100 °C/500 h is commonly 70% to 85% of the initial value measured by ISO 179-1:2010, but the exact retention for CS9000 must be taken from the lot certificate. Catastrophic embrittlement can occur if regrind content above 20 wt% is introduced or if drying temperature exceeds 110 °C for extended time, which accelerates oxidative degradation of the butadiene phase. The material should not be combined with amine-based additives or colour concentrates containing copper phthalocyanine at high loadings without testing, because amine species can attack polycarbonate and copper compounds may catalyse thermo-oxidative breakdown under prolonged heat ageing.

Compared with high-impact ABS, CS9000 in this product family retains higher flexural modulus after heat ageing; compared with standard PC/ABS, the formulation is differentiated by a wider processing latitude and controlled low-temperature impact response. However, published data for this specific CS9000 configuration at -30 °C is limited; low-temperature notched impact testing should be performed per ISO 179-1:2010 or ASTM D256-23 before use in exterior components. Unstabilised PC/ABS yellows under ultraviolet exposure; if CS9000 is used in exterior unpainted applications, UV stabilisation must be confirmed by ISO 4892-2:2021 xenon arc exposure. The grade is not recommended for continuous outdoor use without UV protection because polycarbonate-phase photo-Fries rearrangement produces yellowing and surface microcracking.

Chemical resistance testing follows ISO 22088-3:2021 for environmental stress cracking. Unfilled PC/ABS is attacked by ketones, aromatic hydrocarbons, and strong alkalis; exposure to methyl ethyl ketone at 0.5% strain induces stress cracking. The material is unsuitable for continuous immersion in brake fluid, chlorinated solvents, or concentrated organic acids. For automotive interior use, fogging and volatile organic compound emissions are assessed by ISO 12219-2:2020 or OEM-specific methods. The manufacturer’s regulatory documentation should confirm compliance with REACH and RoHS 2011/65/EU annex II substances; no intentionally added perfluorooctanoic acid or polybrominated diphenyl ethers are associated with unfilled CS9000 class materials, but supplier declarations are required for lot-level verification.
