Application of Mocom (ALBIS) ALTECH® ASA A 1000/128 UV

When a mirror housing shell drops below 2.2 mm mean wall thickness, the material substitution from impact-modified ABS to UV-stabilised ASA changes the melt-front pressure envelope

Moulding exterior rearview mirror shells from Mocom (ALBIS) ALTECH® ASA A 1000/128 UV is not a drop-in ABS substitution when the part is designed with thin-wall sections around the pivot boss and aperture edges. The unfilled ASA base requires pre-drying in a desiccant drier at 80 °C for 4 h to bring residual moisture below 0.03 % by ISO 15512; hopper residence above 60 % relative humidity without closed conveying can raise enough moisture to generate silver streaks behind the pin-gate. In hydraulic injection moulding machines with clamp force of 80–120 t, the nozzle melt temperature is typically set between 240 °C and 260 °C, while the tool wall is held at 60–80 °C to stabilise shrinkage without producing a high-gloss skin that magnifies flow marks. Cavity pressure transducers placed behind the shell’s doghouse boss typically register 45–60 MPa peak pressure at fill-switchover; if switchover is delayed beyond 95 % filled volume, overpacking can lift the grained surface and increase clamp force demand by roughly 10–15 %. Because the weathering package can lower the melt’s tolerance for stagnant heater bands, barrel residence time should remain below 15 min at maximum temperature; prolonged time at 260 °C shifts colour toward yellow in unpigmented grades. The material is usually moulded in a textured tool with VDI 3400 depth between 12 µm and 25 µm, which hides weld lines from the mirror pivot aperture; weld-line tensile strength can be evaluated by ISO 527-2 specimens cut from the boss region, but the part-level proof is a thermal-shock cycle from -30 °C to 80 °C followed by 500 h SAE J2527 xenon-arc exposure. Final painted or unpainted shells are used for exterior mirror housings, A-pillar covers, and cowl-vent grilles where moulded-in black or dark grey avoids post-paint scratches. If the mirror shell is mounted close to an exhaust or engine-bay source exceeding 95 °C continuous, a PC/ASA grade should replace the unfilled ASA because Vicat softening of this class normally lies near 96–100 °C by ISO 306/B50.

Outdoor electrical distribution enclosures designed for IEC 62208 require a housing that can pass impact testing after water exposure and ultraviolet ageing without warping the gasket seat. With ALBIS ALTECH® ASA A 1000/128 UV, thick-section enclosure bodies of 3–4 mm nominal wall are moulded at melt temperatures of 240–255 °C and tool temperatures of 60–80 °C. The acrylic ester rubber phase contains no unsaturated diene double bonds, so the surface does not exhibit the rapid chalking and yellowing typical of general-purpose ABS; validation to ISO 4892-2 cycle 1 at 65 W/m² at 340 nm and black-standard temperature 65 °C is commonly run for 2,000 h to detect ΔE and gloss retention. For enclosures carrying a UL listing, UL 746C f1 is the applicable weathering test; the user should note that unfilled ASA without flame retardants normally rates only UL 94 HB. Electrical equipment requiring UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm must use a flame-retardant ASA/PC or PC/ASA blend because ALTECH® ASA A 1000/128 UV is not a self-extinguishing grade. Tool design for outdoor cabinets must avoid blind tapped holes on weather faces; through-bosses with stainless-steel M5 inserts moulded at 3–4 mm boss wall thickness reduce moisture ingress behind the seal. Gasket compression forces on long side walls should be checked with silicone foam strips compressed to 25–35 %; excessive closure force on unreinforced flat lids can produce creep at 60 °C after 1,000 h if the wall thickness is below 3 mm. The grade is suitable for solar inverter enclosures, outdoor UPS housings, and charge-controller boxes where painted metal would suffer stone-chip corrosion. Chemical contact with diesel oil, hydraulic fluid, and common mineral-oil greases is acceptable for short-term spills, but continuous immersion in aromatic solvents or brake fluid is outside the operating envelope and should be checked by ISO 175 for 7 d at 23 °C. Published data for this specific grade in large flat enclosures is limited; the above conditions are class-level starting points and should be confirmed against a Mocom (ALBIS) lot certificate.

Coextruded ASA capstock: melt-pump stability and gloss retention at sub-1.5 mm cap thickness

Extrusion of window and door profile capstock from ALTECH® ASA A 1000/128 UV runs on single-screw extruders with 25:1–30:1 L/D and a screw compression ratio between 2.5:1 and 3:1. The feedstock must be dried to 0.03 % residual moisture and fed through a hopper loader that prevents regrind from stratifying; if the regrind fraction exceeds 20 %, melt-pump suction pressure can oscillate and produce visible thickness banding on the capstock. Melt temperature at the die entry is normally kept between 220 °C and 240 °C, which is lower than injection moulding because extended residence in the adapter and die can shift colour. Coextrusion dies with a melt-pump set at 3–5 bar suction stabilise the cap layer, particularly when the ASA capstock is run at 0.8–1.5 mm over a rigid PVC substrate. Below 0.6 mm cap thickness, the base substrate can read through as an optical density change after two years of outdoor exposure; above 1.5 mm, the outer layer dominates the profile’s linear thermal expansion and can create bow. Calibration and cooling are controlled with dry vacuum calibrators at 40–60 °C and water bath temperatures below 30 °C; fast quenching produces a low-gloss surface that is suited to window profiles but too matte for high-end fascia. Weathering compliance for exterior profile sections is generally tested by EN 513 for PVC/ASA systems, with colour change assessed after 3,000 h of artificial weathering; profile validation should also include corner weld strength to EN 514. The final components are residential window sash capping, door sills, and exterior trim boards where the ASA surface is expected to retain colour better than PVC or painted ABS. One processing boundary is that the ASA capstock should not be coextruded directly over flexible PVC containing high levels of monomeric o-phthalate plasticiser, because plasticiser migration can reduce interlayer adhesion and induce stress whitening at notches.

Radome shells for X-band marine antennas are an instructive application because the part must maintain dielectric homogeneity, impact resistance, and colour stability in a salt-spray environment. ALBIS ALTECH® ASA A 1000/128 UV can be injection moulded as a thin-walled top shell of 2.0–2.5 mm thickness; sink marks around the mounting flange are controlled by the holding pressure profile and by designing the flange at 70–80 % of the nominal wall rather than using a heavy solid boss. After moulding, the shells are joined by ultrasonic welding at 20 kHz with an energy director height of 0.4 mm; the horn trip is set on collapse displacement rather than time because ASA softens near 96–100 °C and can over-weld if the joint is held beyond the melt solidification point. Moisture conditioning before welding must return the parts to 0.05 % maximum moisture, or weld flash will contain microvoids visible at the joint line. Water absorption of unfilled ASA after 24 h immersion is in the region of 0.3 % by ISO 62, which is low enough for marine radar housings if the seam is sealed with a closed-cell EPDM gasket. Salt-fog resistance is assessed by ISO 9227 NSS for 480 h; no significant surface blistering is expected when the tool texture is fully vented. The UV-stabilised grade is used for antenna radomes, GPS receiver housings, deck-light enclosures, and wind-vane sensor shells where unpainted ASA replaces painted ABS and eliminates paint delamination after repeated thermal cycling. The main limitation is not ultraviolet resistance but low-velocity impact brittleness below -20 °C if the shell is injection moulded with sharp internal corners; radii below 0.5 mm should be avoided at mounting bosses.

What changes when an outdoor-spec power tool housing shifts from glass-filled polypropylene to unfilled UV-stabilised ASA?

In a conversion from glass-filled polypropylene to unfilled UV-stabilised ASA, the first processing deviation is shrinkage anisotropy. Glass-filled PP at 20 % glass fibre by weight typically shows a mould shrinkage near 0.3–0.5 % in the flow direction and 0.7–1.0 % across flow, while unfilled ASA in the ALTECH® ASA A 1000/128 UV class is closer to 0.5–0.8 % with less fibre orientation; this removes warpage at the expense of lower room-temperature stiffness. Housings for line trimmers and leaf blowers are moulded with a wall stock of 2.5–3.0 mm, and the tool is gated through a subrunner that enters below the handle boss to preserve surface appearance. Melt temperature is held at 240–260 °C; if the melt drops below 230 °C, the moulded-in embossed logo loses edge sharpness because the high-flow grade freezes quickly in the textured cavity. Chemical resistance is acceptable for occasional contact with SAE 10W-30 lubricating oil, unleaded petrol splash, and mineral-oil-based chain lubricant, but continuous immersion in toluene, xylene, or methyl ethyl ketone will stress-crack the housing; resistance should be checked by ISO 22088-3 at 0.5 % strain. Thread-forming screws into ASA bosses require lower insertion torque than into glass-filled PP because the matrix is less abrasive; however, boss hoop stress at 34 mm diameter with a 2.5 mm wall can exceed the material’s environmental stress-cracking resistance if a plated zinc screw absorbs hydrocarbons from the operator’s gloves. The end components are outdoor power tool housings, garden sprayer bodies, and portable generator control panels. A practical boundary is that unfilled ASA should not be specified for fuel tanks or structural mounts directly bolted to engines where continuous temperature exceeds 90 °C.

Agricultural cab fairings replace painted ABS with low-gloss ASA when paint-shop throughput is removed

Farm machinery exterior panels, roof fairings, and cowl side covers are produced by vacuum forming or injection moulding, but the use of ALBIS ALTECH® ASA A 1000/128 UV is most common in injection-moulded low-gloss dark grey or black parts where a paint line would otherwise add cost and a post-mould dimensional stabilisation step. On a 1,200 t injection machine moulding a cab roof fairing with a projected area of 0.4 m², the clamp force per unit projected area in the tool should be maintained between 350 bar and 450 bar on the projected area to prevent flash at the shut-offs. The material is dried at 80 °C for 4–6 h; when the resin is loaded into an unheated hopper in a shed at 85 % relative humidity, the first 30 min of moulding can produce splay at the gate, a frequent spring start-up defect. Melt temperature of 240–255 °C and tool temperature of 60–70 °C produce a low-gloss surface that does not require paint. The weathering requirement is commonly written as SAE J2527 with a radiant dosage of 1,500 kJ/m² at 340 nm, followed by colour measurement to ISO 7724-2; OEM acceptance is often ΔE ≤ 3.0 and gloss retention ≥ 60 % at 60° geometry. For parts that must survive a head impact, the section is ribbed rather than thickened because unfilled ASA modulus drops with thickness above 4 mm; rib-to-wall ratios of 0.5 are used to keep the visible surface flat. The end uses are cab steps, rear fender extensions, belt-line trims, and joystick console housings. The operational boundary is cold impact: the material performs well when radii are above 1.0 mm, but a sharp steel insert or an unfilleted window cut-out can initiate a crack at -30 °C under stone impact.
