For automotive exterior mirror housing programs, Mocom (ALBIS) ALCOM® ASA ASA 540/7 UV SV1281-08MCF is converted as a pre-coloured weatherable ASA injection moulding compound. The nominal melt volume-flow rate of 7 cm³/10 min at 220°C under 10 kg load, determined to ISO 1133-1:2022, positions the melt for thin-wall, class-A mirror shells without external processing aids. Drying is performed in a desiccant-bed dryer at 80°C for 4 h, with a residual moisture limit of 0.05 wt%; moisture above 0.08 wt% produces silver streaking on the shell surface at injection flow-front velocities exceeding 200 mm/s, a failure mode observed on a 1,200 kN injection moulding machine running a 70 cm³ shot. Barrel set points from feed throat to nozzle are maintained at 230°C, 240°C, 245°C, 245°C, 250°C, with a melt temperature at the nozzle of 245°C to 255°C measured by an inserted thermocouple; a three-zone screw with an L/D ratio of 25:1, a compression ratio of 2.5:1, and a sliding check ring is used, with back pressure held at 50 bar to 80 bar and peripheral screw speed limited to 0.15 m/s. Mould temperature is controlled at 60°C to 70°C for the visible shell surface and 45°C for the mounting-frame side; differential tool temperatures above 30°C across the cavity produce warpage at the lens sealing groove. Hold pressure is set at 60% of peak hydraulic pressure for 6 s, and cooling time is set at 18 s before ejection at 85°C part surface temperature. Sprues and cold-runner material are re-introduced only as dried regrind at a maximum of 15 wt%; at 20 wt% regrind, the MVR rises by approximately 0.8 cm³/10 min, shifting the gate freeze time but not materially changing the SAE J2527 colour difference in the tested black lot. Terminal components are side-view mirror housings and mirror base covers for a light commercial vehicle platform, where the unpainted shell must retain at least 80% of its original notched Charpy impact energy after 2,000 kJ/m² of xenon arc exposure under ISO 4892-2:2013, method A, cycle 1. Boss pull-out for the actuator mounting screws is evaluated at -20°C by ASTM D3763-18; boss outside diameters below 5.5 mm exhibit base cracking when the nominal wall around the boss is less than 1.8 mm. Ultrasonic welding to the polypropylene bracket is carried out at 20 kHz with 35 N trigger force and 0.25 s weld time; weld seam bending is checked by ISO 178:2019 three-point flexure, with the terminal part required to fail outside the weld plane rather than along the energy director.
The requirement addresses unpainted exterior trim programs such as cowl vent grilles, rocker panel extensions, rear diffuser inserts, and roof rail covers where liquid painting would introduce volatile organic compounds and secondary handling costs. The SV1281-08MCF colour recipe is a melt-compounded black or dark grey formulation in which the UV absorber and hindered amine light stabiliser package is already dispersed; press-side masterbatch addition is therefore eliminated, and the only acceptable formulation adjustment is the addition of mechanically recycled sprues at no more than 15 wt%. Injection moulded parts are typically gated at a hidden edge with a fan gate of 1.0 mm to 1.5 mm thickness and 5 mm land length, and sequential valve-gate control is used on a two-cavity cowl vent tool to balance the melt front within 10% of total fill time. A melt temperature of 250°C at the nozzle, combined with a tool temperature of 65°C, produces a surface molecular orientation that supports ISO 179-1/1eA:2023 Charpy notched impact energies above the OEM minimum on black unpainted specimens after 2,000 kJ/m² of SAE J2527 exposure. The same weathering regime is used to evaluate gloss retention with a 60° gloss meter according to ISO 2813:2014; unpainted ASA surfaces generally show initial gloss values between 70 GU and 85 GU, and values below 50 GU after weathering normally trigger a tool polish review. Solvent cleaning in trim assembly is limited to aliphatic hydrocarbon or isopropanol wipes; aromatic hydrocarbons, esters, and ketones are contraindicated because they produce stress crazing on the injection-compressed outer surface after 24 h of retained strain at a level of 0.6%. For dark-colour roof rail covers, surface temperatures on slow-moving field vehicles may exceed 85°C in desert conditions; the ASA matrix retains heat distortion up to the Vicat softening range, but continuous clamping pressure on polymer bosses is not recommended above 80°C under load. Terminal painted-replacement programs include a black cowl vent grille for a compact SUV and a dark grey rear diffuser insert for a battery-electric sedan, both requiring DIN 75220 simulation of ageing in a hot light cabinet for interior-adjacent areas before full exterior homologation.
Within extruded glazing lineals and window profile capstocks, the ASA grade is coextruded as a UV-resistant cap layer over a PVC-U or mineral-filled PVC core to prevent chalking, colour shift, and surface microcracking on south-facing building façades. Extrusion is performed on a parallel twin-screw extruder with a 26:1 L/D barrel for the core and a satellite single-screw extruder with a 30 mm screw diameter for the ASA cap. The cap melt temperature is held at 230°C to 240°C, the die temperature at 225°C, and the roll stack at 70°C; the cap layer is set at 0.3 mm to 0.5 mm thickness, representing 10% to 15% of the total profile wall. Calibration runs at 1.2 m/min to 1.8 m/min produce a uniform cap layer, and fluctuations above 5% in puller speed create surface streaks visible after 1,000 h of ISO 4892-3:2013 exposure in a UV fluorescent device with 0.76 W/m² at 340 nm. The grade is not combined with external white masterbatch in glazing applications; titanium-dioxide-clear ASA cap systems require a separate colour formulation and should not be attempted by dry blending because a 0.5 wt% masterbatch addition causes local melt-pressure variation. During assembly, corner hot-plate welding is performed at 220°C plate temperature and 0.35 MPa joint pressure for 30 s; welded corner strength is tested under EN 514 tensile bending. Terminal articles are sloped glazing frames, roof light curbs, and ventilation louvre profiles in low-energy residential façades where the PVC core alone would fail the 10-year colour fastness requirement under European building product specifications. The cap layer also provides a physical barrier to volatile additive migration from the PVC core; extraction of the cap after 72 h in water at 60°C is conducted to EN 15908 or an equivalent profile water-absorption method.
Outdoor electrical enclosure hoods, charging pile front covers, and photovoltaic combiner-box lids are injection moulded from the SV1281-08MCF black grade when the mechanical design requires an unpainted, UV-stabilised polymer with low warpage under solar load. The flammability boundary for this application is narrow: ASA compounds are typically classified UL 94 HB at 3.0 mm, and the current grade does not carry a UL 94 V-0 rating at 2.0 mm in certified files available for this colour code. Where the end-use specification requires V-0 at 2.0 mm, the grade is rejected in favour of a flame-retardant PC/ASA, and no amount of predrying or tool-temperature adjustment will close that regulatory gap. For outdoor suitability, UL 746C f1 recognition must be verified on the finished part at the nominal wall thickness, because the f1 rating depends on colour, thickness, and the specific UV package. The nominal wall is set at 3.2 mm for the front cover and 2.4 mm for internal ribs. Moulding is conducted on a 2,500 kN hydraulic injection moulding machine with a rated shot volume of 450 cm³; barrel set points are 240°C, 245°C, 250°C, 250°C, with a nozzle temperature of 255°C. The tool is water-heated to 60°C and uses a hot-runner system with valve gates; melt-pressure drop from the hot runner nozzle to the last cavity should not exceed 120 bar, otherwise the outer cover exhibits sink-marks above rib intersections. To meet impact requirements after thermal ageing, a notched Charpy impact test is performed to ISO 179-1/1eA:2023 on specimens taken from the front cover after 1,000 h of ISO 4892-2:2013 xenon arc exposure; impact energy retention is used to define the quality gate, with the final acceptance criterion stated on the customer drawing rather than inferred from raw material data. A nickel-plated brass insert is overmoulded into the threaded closure for the wiring entry; insert temperature is maintained at 110°C to 120°C, and insert pull-out force is measured by tensile pull at 23°C according to ISO 527-1:2012. Terminal articles are an AC charging-pile front housing and a combiner-box cover for a solar rooftop installation in a high-UV coastal environment, where salt-mist exposure is evaluated separately by IEC 60068-2-52:2017 severity 1 or 2. Published multi-year weathering data for this exact colour and wall thickness are limited; conformity must be confirmed against the current ALBIS technical datasheet and the UL database for the final assembly.

For appliance control panels and front trim frames exposed to intermittent steam, alkaline detergent, and localized heat from oven consoles, the grade is injected into textured and high-gloss hybrid tools. The application is selected where the polymer must resist colour shift under kitchen lighting and occasional contact with household chemicals. The melt is injected at 245°C into a tool conditioned at 60°C; the cavity surface is polished to SPI A-2 for the display surround and textured to VDI 3400 texture 24 for the lower frame. A hot-runner system with a single valve gate is used to prevent visible gate blush on a 2.0 mm nominal wall control panel; the gate diameter is 0.8 mm, and injection velocity is profiled from 20 mm/s to 50 mm/s to avoid shear splay at the gate. The drying condition is identical to other segments: 80°C for 4 h, residual moisture below 0.05 wt%. Detergent resistance is evaluated by a 24 h immersion in a 5 wt% sodium carbonate solution at 60°C, followed by tensile testing to ISO 527-2:2012; surface cracking after immersion is not permitted. The grade is not specified for direct contact with ester-based plasticisers or for oven interior components because the continuous use temperature under load is below the temperatures generated in the oven console body. Flame requirements are addressed under IEC 60335-1:2020 clause 30.2.3.1 for glow wire; an 750°C glow wire test at 1.0 mm wall is performed on the housing assembly when the part acts as a current-carrying support. Terminal finished articles are a top panel for a front-loading washing machine, a fascia trim for a built-in dishwasher, and a side console frame for a household oven, each with specific colour tolerances controlled by the SV1281-08MCF formulation.
Garden power tool housings for cordless lawn mowers, grass trimmers, and leaf blowers use the SV1281-08MCF black grade because the polymer resists solar colour fade under storage conditions and retains impact below freezing. The injection moulding process is similar to automotive exterior parts but with deeper ribs and thicker bosses for engine mount isolators; a 2,000 kN servo-driven moulding machine with a 60 cm³ shot is used, and melt temperature is set to 245°C at the nozzle. Tool temperature is controlled at 55°C to avoid stress concentrations in the rear handle bridge; the handle bridge nominal wall is 2.5 mm, with ribs at 1.8 mm to meet the 1.6:1 wall-to-rib ratio. Fuel and oil exposure is a process boundary: the ASA matrix withstands limited splash contact with SAE 10W-30 lubricating oil at 23°C, but continuous immersion in aromatic petrol brews causes surface softening and stress cracking within 24 h; spills of ethanol-free petrol are to be wiped from the deck housing immediately. Outdoor exposure is tested by ISO 4892-2:2013 for 1,500 h, and impact is tested by ISO 179-1/1eA:2023 at -30°C. The final application includes a side deck panel for a battery-electric walk-behind mower, a curved grass-trimmer engine cover, and a leaf-blower volute shroud; in the latter, the polymer is selected only for the shroud, not for the impeller, which is glass-filled polyamide. A drop test is performed to ASTM D5276-19 from a height of 0.9 m at -10°C; cracking at the gate boss is not permitted.
Sheet extrusion and thermoforming of the grade serve recreational vehicle skylight trims, spa cabinet side panels, and pool equipment shrouds. The ASA is plasticised in a single-screw extruder with a 90 mm screw and 33:1 L/D ratio, equipped with a barrier flight and a screen pack of 80/120 mesh. Melt temperature is controlled at 235°C and die temperature at 230°C; the extruded sheet is polished on a three-roll stack with the middle roll at 85°C and the lower roll at 90°C. Sheet thickness is 3.2 mm, and tolerance is held within ±0.1 mm over a 1,250 mm web width by closed-loop thickness gauge. Thermoforming is performed on a three-station rotary machine with top and bottom ceramic heaters; the sheet surface is raised to 170°C to 190°C, and a surface pyrometer scans across the forming area with a maximum deviation of 5°C. Below 160°C, the sheet cannot reproduce the draw ratio of 0.6:1 in the pool shroud louvres; above 200°C, surface gloss decreases and the material may stick to the aluminium plug assist. The plug assist is made of syntactic foam and is maintained at 120°C to prevent pre-stretching marks. The extruded sheet is tested after forming to ISO 6603-2:2023 puncture impact at -20°C for exterior RV side trims; brittle fracture around the formed rib is considered a failure. The terminal parts are a spa side panel with embossed slats, a pool pump housing dome, and an RV skylight trim ring; all are black or dark grey and rely on the UV package of the SV1281-08MCF recipe rather than secondary painting.
