Application of Mitsui Chemicals TAFMER VLDPE DF7350
For impact modification of polypropylene homopolymer, Mitsui Chemicals TAFMER DF7350 is dry-blended with polypropylene homopolymer pellets at mass fractions between 15 wt% and 25 wt% before metering into a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with a screw diameter of 75 mm and a length-to-diameter ratio of 44:1. The feed throat is held at 45 °C to 55 °C, and the barrel zones are maintained between 190 °C and 230 °C. The resin has a typical density of 0.870 g/cm³ and a melt mass-flow rate of 35 g/10 min at 190 °C/2.16 kg, which permits the formation of dispersed ethylene copolymer domains below 2 µm in the polypropylene continuous phase. A production-scale formulation containing 80 wt% polypropylene homopolymer, 20 wt% DF7350, 0.2 phr primary antioxidant, and 0.3 phr calcium stearate is compounded at a screw speed of 350 rpm to 400 rpm; operation above 450 rpm on the 75 mm extruder can raise melt temperature above 250 °C, causing melt strength loss and gel formation. The compound is injection molded at a melt temperature of 220 °C to 240 °C and a screw back pressure of 5 MPa to 8 MPa; notched Izod specimens are conditioned at -30 °C for 48 h before testing under ISO 179-1/1eA, and flexural modulus is measured under ISO 178 at 2 mm/min. Addition of DF7350 above 30 wt% should be avoided in semi-structural components, because the flexural modulus of the compound can fall below the threshold specified by many original equipment manufacturers for rigid polypropylene parts. The resulting impact-modified polypropylene grades are used for automotive air ducts, appliance housing bases, and injection-molded luggage shells where low-temperature crack resistance is a requirement.

What Limits Line Speed on Halogen-Free Sheathing Lines Using DF7350 as the Polymer Base?

Halogen-free flame retardant sheathing compounds for low-voltage energy cables combine DF7350 with a high-density polyethylene phase, aluminium trihydroxide, and magnesium dihydroxide. The processing window is set by the onset of aluminium trihydroxide dehydration at approximately 190 °C and the minimum melt temperature required to disperse filler agglomerates, which is near 175 °C for a compound containing 100 phr total polymer, 150 phr aluminium trihydroxide, 20 phr magnesium dihydroxide, 1.2 phr organosilane coupling agent, 0.5 phr antioxidant, and 0.8 phr processing aid. On a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with 40:1 L/D and an 11-barrel configuration, the recommended zone settings are 130 °C, 150 °C, 165 °C, 175 °C, 175 °C, 175 °C, 175 °C, 180 °C, 180 °C, 185 °C, and 185 °C at the die; screw speed is maintained between 250 rpm and 320 rpm. Exceeding 190 °C in the front barrels liberates water vapor from metal hydroxide fillers, causing melt porosity and surface roughness on the extruded jacket. Below 170 °C, the shear viscosity of the filled compound can exceed 5,000 Pa·s at 100 s-1, which increases motor load and reduces throughput. The finished sheathing is subjected to acid gas release testing per IEC 60754-1, smoke density testing per IEC 60754-2, and tensile strength and elongation at break testing per EN 60811-501. These compounds are used for building wire jackets, photovoltaic cable jacketing, and telecommunication riser cable sheaths. The level of DF7350 should not exceed 35 wt% of the polymer fraction when the cable is intended for continuous conductor operating temperatures above 90 °C, because low crystallinity reduces the hot set performance under IEC 60811-507 test conditions.

For polyolefin-based hot melt pressure sensitive adhesives used in hygienic nonwoven assembly, the molten adhesive is applied through a slot-die coating head at a temperature of 160 °C to 180 °C and a coating weight of 2 g/m² to 6 g/m². DF7350 is formulated as the polymer base at 25 wt% to 35 wt%, with 50 wt% to 60 wt% aliphatic or hydrogenated hydrocarbon tackifier, 5 wt% to 10 wt% wax, and 0.5 wt% to 1.0 wt% hindered phenolic antioxidant. The Brookfield viscosity measured per ASTM D3236 at 150 °C is typically maintained below 5,000 mPa·s to allow spray application through a pneumatic application head. Open time is controlled between 3 s and 5 s for nonwoven web lamination, and the bonded assembly is evaluated for T-peel strength under ASTM D1876. The adhesive must comply with 21 CFR 175.105 when indirect food contact is part of the packaging application. The compound is used for disposable hygiene acquisition layer lamination, carton side-seam sealing, and carpet tile edge bonding. The service temperature ceiling should be limited to 70 °C, because the low crystallinity of DF7350 produces measurable creep under sustained load above that temperature.

When DF7350 Replaces EVA in Foamed Midsole Compounding

A formulation containing 70 phr ethylene-vinyl acetate with 18% vinyl acetate, 30 phr DF7350, 1.0 phr to 1.5 phr zinc oxide, 0.5 phr to 0.8 phr stearic acid, 0.9 phr dicumyl peroxide, and 2.5 phr azodicarbonamide is mixed on a two-roll mill at 110 °C to 120 °C until the blowing agent and peroxide are uniformly dispersed. The milled sheet is then press-cured at 170 °C to 180 °C under 15 MPa for 8 min to 10 min, producing a crosslinked foam with an expansion ratio between 1.6 and 1.9. The DF7350 fraction reduces Shore A hardness relative to an EVA-only reference, but if DF7350 content exceeds 40 phr, the cell structure becomes irregular and compression set under ASTM D3574 increases above commonly accepted limits. Resilience is measured according to ASTM D2632, split tear strength under ASTM D3574, and hardness under ASTM D2240. The foamed sheets are used for sneaker midsoles, cushioned footbed inserts, and low-density protective packaging. Residual acetophenone from dicumyl peroxide decomposition can remain if cure time is shortened below 8 min; post-cure degassing at 80 °C for 4 h reduces odor to acceptable levels before lamination to textile substrates.

In coextruded cast film lines producing polypropylene-based flexible packaging, a sealant skin layer incorporating DF7350 at 15 wt% to 35 wt% into a polypropylene random copolymer reduces the heat seal initiation temperature. The blend is fed to a single-screw extruder with 33:1 L/D and a barrier screw, using zone temperatures from 220 °C to 245 °C and a die temperature of 245 °C. Hot-tack strength measured per ASTM F1921 is used to adjust the sealant layer thickness; heat-seal strength is measured per ASTM F88. The sealant layer allows higher packaging line speeds relative to unmodified polypropylene films, provided that the converting line maintains consistent seal jaw dwell time. For food contact applications, the finished film must comply with EU Regulation 10/2011 overall migration limits of 10 mg/dm² and applicable specific migration limits for monomers and additives. The sealant film is used for flow-pack snack packaging, paper lamination overwrap, and polypropylene-based lidding films. DF7350 at levels above 40 wt% begins to reduce the flexural stiffness and heat resistance of the sealant layer; retort film formulations exposed to temperatures above 121 °C require substitution with a higher-crystallinity sealant resin.

Thermoplastic Elastomer Overmolding on Polypropylene Substrates Requires a Primer-Free Interface

DF7350 can serve as the elastomer phase in a compounded thermoplastic elastomer formulated with polypropylene homopolymer, white mineral oil, and styrene block copolymer. A starting formulation contains 25 wt% DF7350, 25 wt% polypropylene homopolymer, 35 wt% white mineral oil, 10 wt% styrene block copolymer, and 5 wt% external lubricant. The material is injection overmolded onto a polypropylene substrate using a two-shot injection molding machine with a clamp force of 1,200 kN and an interface temperature above 160 °C for chemical adhesion without a solvent primer. Hardness is measured under ISO 868, tensile properties under ISO 527-2, and tear strength under ISO 34-1. Overmolding defects occur if the substrate temperature drops below 100 °C before the second shot, producing delamination at the weld interface. The compounds are used for power tool soft-grip handles, toothbrush handle grips, and appliance control knobs. For skin-contact products, the formulation should be reviewed against REACH Annex XVII and 21 CFR 177.1520 where applicable.
