Mitsui Chemicals TAFMER VLDPE A-4070S is an ethylene/α-olefin copolymer with a nominal density of 0.870 g/cm³ (ISO 1183-1:2019) and a nominal melt flow rate of 3.6 g/10 min (ISO 1133-1:2022, 190 °C/2.16 kg). The application set below is limited to industrial sectors for which the grade is specified in downstream formulations: injection-molded thermoplastic olefin exterior fascia, cast/blown stretch film cling layers, calendered automotive interior skins, post-consumer polypropylene reclaim upgrading, cross-linked polyolefin foam, and halogen-free flame-retardant cable jacketing.
Compounding trials on a 75 mm co-rotating twin-screw extruder with an L/D ratio of 44:1 and side-fed filler capability indicate that A-4070S is added at 15–25 wt% of the total PP-rich compound rather than used as a neat molding resin. The matrix is an ethylene-propylene impact copolymer, and the replacement ratio is governed by elastomer phase viscosity rather than by simple impact modifier loading. Feeding A-4070S through the main hopper with pelletized PP at ambient temperature is sufficient when pellets remain sealed; at relative humidity above 80% or after storage exposure exceeding 6 h, predrying at 60 °C for 2–4 h in a desiccant dryer is required to prevent moisture-induced strand porosity. Barrel zones are set at 210–215 °C in the feed section, 230–240 °C through the melt-mixing zones, and 220–230 °C at the die plate; melt temperature at the die is maintained at 235–245 °C, with screw speed 350–500 min⁻¹ and specific energy input 0.22–0.28 kWh/kg. A vacuum pump connected to the penultimate barrel section maintains −0.08 MPa gauge to remove volatiles. The compounded pellets are then molded on a 1,800 t clamp force injection molding machine with a 3,500 cm³ accumulator and shot mass 2.2–3.8 kg. Melt temperature in injection molding is 230–250 °C, mold temperature 30–50 °C, fill time 2.0–3.5 s, hold pressure 50–70 MPa, and cooling time 25–45 s depending on fascia thickness. At 18–22 wt% addition, instrumented puncture tests under ISO 6603-2:2023 Method A at −30 °C on 3.0 mm plaques show ductile failures with high energy-to-max-load values; the same plaques tested according to ASTM D3763-18 at 2.5 m/s demonstrate puncture propagation resistance without cracking to the specimen edge. Notched Charpy impact under ISO 179-1:2020 at −30 °C and notched Izod impact under ISO 180:2023 at −30 °C are used as incoming material qualification checks, because single-point Izod values do not correlate with whole-fascia crash behavior. Exterior fascia and rocker panels must comply with end-of-life vehicle directive 2000/53/EC Annex II for lead, mercury, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium, and REACH (EC) No 1907/2006 candidate list obligations. For OEM production lines, IATF 16949:2016 process control requires record retention of MFR measured under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 230 °C/2.16 kg for the finished compound; the target compound MFR after compounding is 18–25 g/10 min, with batch-to-batch variation limited to ±1.5 g/10 min to avoid short shots in thin rib sections. At addition rates below 15 wt%, low-temperature multiaxial impact in cold-climate tests may fall below OEM targets for energy at maximum load, while addition above 25 wt% reduces compound flexural modulus below 700 MPa and causes sinks over attachment bosses; the operative boundary is therefore a balance between cold ductility and long-span stiffness. The terminal components are injection-molded bumper fascia, rocker panels, and wheel arch cladding, often painted after flame or plasma pretreatment.
In five-layer cast coextrusion lines producing pallet wrap, A-4070S is used as a cling-layer modifier, not as a bulk core resin. The addition ratio is 5–15 wt% of the cling skin layer, with the remainder typically a hexene LLDPE having density 0.918 g/cm³ and core layers of metallocene LLDPE. Food-contact status requires that all layers comply with FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 for olefin polymers and with overall migration limits under EC 10/2011; most pallet wrap is non-food and is specified under industrial packaging rules instead. The film gauge is 12–23 µm, with the cling layer controlled at 1.5–3.0 µm. On a cast line, a 3,000 mm die, 75 mm core extruder, and 45 mm skin extruders feed a 0.45 mm die gap; melt temperature is 225–235 °C, chill roll temperature 18–22 °C, and line speed 450–600 m/min. In blown film, a blow-up ratio of 2.5:1 and frost line height of 4× die diameter are typical. Peel cling force is measured according to ASTM D5458-95(2020) after 24 h at 23 °C, and puncture resistance is measured according to ASTM D5748-95(2019). At addition above 15 wt%, roll blocking force after 48 h at 35 °C can exceed the unwinding torque limit of automatic wrappers; at addition below 5 wt%, cling force falls below the minimum required for stable high-speed spiral wrapping. The finished products are machine pallet stretch film, pre-stretched hand wrap, and agricultural wrap, all produced without added plasticizer.
Sheet stock for vacuum-formed instrument panels is compounded with A-4070S at 45–65 wt% in a PP homopolymer or impact copolymer matrix, with 5–10 wt% EPDM or SEBS as an additional low-temperature flex modifier and 2–4 wt% color masterbatch. The compliance framework includes VDA 278:2016 for volatile and semi-volatile organic compound emission, DIN 75201 for windshield fogging, ISO 6452:2021 for fogging characteristics of coated fabrics, and ISO 868 for Shore A hardness. The compound is produced on a 58 mm co-rotating twin-screw extruder at 190–210 °C, pelletized, and then fed to a 4-roll calender with roll surface temperatures 190–210 °C. Sheet thickness is 0.8–1.5 mm, and grain embossing is applied in-line. Vacuum thermoforming uses sheet preheat at 170–190 °C, mold temperature 50 °C, and draw ratio 1.3:1 to 1.8:1. Hardness after forming is maintained at 55–75 Shore A; below 45 wt% A-4070S, Shore A rises above 75 and cold flexing at −30 °C can cause whitening at grain roots. Above 65 wt%, calender release becomes difficult and sheet blocking requires external release agents and reduced line speed. Hidden airbag deployment seam performance is verified by OEM-specific laser scoring and low-temperature fragment tests rather than by published ISO standards. The terminal product forms are instrument panel epidermis, door upper roll skin, and center console cover skin for passenger vehicles.
At a sorting and compounding facility handling mixed post-consumer polypropylene reclaim from beverage crate, battery case, and garden furniture dismantling streams, batch-to-batch melt-flow drift and residual contamination limit the use of neat regrind in rigid injection molding. Upgrading with A-4070S at 5–12 wt% based on regrind mass restores impact consistency without the need for external plastomers. The compliance framework includes ISO 15270:2008 for plastics recovery and recycling, EN 15343:2007 for recycled plastics traceability and conformity assessment, and ISO 16103:2005 for transport packaging. The process uses a 50 mm co-rotating twin-screw extruder with L/D 36:1, barrel set points 190–210 °C, vacuum venting at −0.09 MPa, screen changer with 80/40 mesh, and water-ring pelletizing. Contaminant fractions containing PVC, nylon, or POM cause phase separation and temperature incompatibility and must be removed by density separation before compounding. The upgraded pellets are injection molded into industrial crates, transport pallets, and drainage chambers. Direct food-contact use is excluded unless feedstock source documentation and migration testing under Commission Regulation (EC) No 2022/1616 are completed.
Continuous chemical cross-linking lines processing LDPE/EVA foam sheet require a viscosity modifier that does not suppress gel fraction development. A-4070S is incorporated at 10–30 phr relative to 100 phr of LDPE/EVA polymer feed. The compliance framework includes ASTM D1056-20 for flexible cellular materials, FMVSS 302 for automotive interior flammability, and ISO 7214:2012 for flexible cellular plastics. Processing begins in an internal mixer at 120–130 °C, followed by a twin-roll mill at 105–115 °C, then a single-screw extruder sheet die at 110–130 °C. The sheet passes through a continuous hot-air cross-linking oven at 210–230 °C with dwell time 3–6 min; gel fraction is measured at 55–70% according to ASTM D2765-16. Expansion ratio is typically 5:1 to 10:1. At addition above 30 phr, gel fraction declines below 55% and compression set after 22 h at 70 °C rises above 25% under ASTM D1056-20; below 10 phr, surface cracking can occur during vacuum forming at draw ratios of 2:1. Published data for this specific grade in continuous chemical cross-linking is limited, so upper addition ratio is confirmed by control-run gel fraction before production. The terminal components are closed-cell foam gaskets, anti-vibration padding, HVAC thermal insulation, and automotive door water guards.
In HFFR cable jacket compounds, the polymer fraction is formulated with A-4070S at 20–40 wt% of the total polymer base, with an EVA/LLDPE remainder and a flame-retardant package of 120–150 phr surface-treated magnesium hydroxide, 3–8 phr zinc borate, and 1.0–2.0 phr silane coupling agent. The qualification matrix includes IEC 60332-1-2 for single wire flame spread, IEC 60754-1:2011 and IEC 60754-2:2011 for acid gas and acidity, ISO 4589-2:2017 for limiting oxygen index, and ASTM D638-14 for tensile properties. Compounding is performed on a 65 mm low-shear twin-screw extruder at 150–180 °C and screw speed 180–250 min⁻¹, followed by cable jacket extrusion at 160–190 °C. Above 40 wt% A-4070S, LOI falls below 28% and softening point decreases; below 20 wt%, elongation retention after 100 °C/168 h thermal aging does not improve over conventional EVA compounds. Amine-based stabilizers are avoided in EVA-rich HFFR matrices because ester hydrolysis after thermal aging can cause color shift and acid gas increase. The terminal product types are HFFR sheathing for appliance cords, control cables, portable power tool cords, and EV charging cable sheathing where oil resistance is not required.
