Application of Mitsui Chemicals TAFMER VLDPE A-20090S

In polypropylene compounding for injection-moulded automotive interior parts, TAFMER A-20090S is incorporated at 10–25 wt% into a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with an L/D ratio of 40:1. The grade has a nominal density of 0.890 g/cm³ per ISO 1183-1 and a nominal melt flow rate of 0.8 g/10 min at 190 °C/2.16 kg per ISO 1133-1. Barrel temperatures are set from 180 °C in the feed section to 220 °C at the die, and the modifier is dry-blended with PP pellets upstream of the main feed or side-fed downstream of the melting zone. Injection moulding of the compounded material uses clamp force between 1200 kN and 2500 kN and melt temperature of 210–240 °C. The resulting compounds are tested for notched Izod impact according to ISO 180/1A at −30 °C, −20 °C, and 23 °C, for flexural modulus according to ISO 178, and for tensile properties according to ISO 527-2. The A-20090S domains reduce the brittle-ductile transition of the PP phase and lower flexural modulus; the magnitude depends on the PP matrix MFR, peroxide vis-breaking ratio, and mould tool temperature. End products include door panel inserts, B-pillar covers, glove box lids, and centre console substrates, where automotive interior VOC and odour requirements are tested according to VDA 277 or VDA 270 in the finished compound rather than by the VLDPE grade alone.

What Controls Seal Initiation Temperature in Coextruded Film Structures?

In three-layer and five-layer coextruded packaging structures, A-20090S is used in the sealant layer at 10–30 wt% of the sealant formulation, typically with mLLDPE or LLDPE having a nominal density of 0.918 g/cm³. The low crystallinity associated with the 0.890 g/cm³ VLDPE shifts the seal initiation below that of conventional LLDPE sealants; seal strength is measured according to ASTM F88/F88M using a jaw pressure of 0.28 MPa, a dwell time of 0.5 s, and a specimen width of 25.4 mm. Hot-tack performance is measured according to ASTM F1921, and seal temperatures are selected to achieve a minimum seal strength of 4.4 N/25.4 mm for standard barrier pouches. Processing on blown film lines uses die gap settings of 1.8–2.2 mm, a blow-up ratio of 2.0–2.8:1, and melt temperature of 195–215 °C. On cast film lines, chill roll temperature is maintained between 15 °C and 25 °C to stabilize the sealant surface. The sealant layer thickness is typically 10–25 µm within a total film thickness of 50–90 µm. End products include stand-up pouches, frozen food bags, and lidding films for dairy and produce packaging. Compliance for food contact is evaluated under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and Regulation (EU) No 10/2011, with migration testing required for fatty or alcoholic food simulants.

Where flexible PVC replacement is specified for medical tubing and film, a compound containing 20–40 wt% A-20090S with SEBS or EVA is processed on a 25 mm single-screw extruder with an L/D of 25:1. The melt temperature is kept at 190–210 °C, and the draw ratio after the water bath is kept below 1.5:1 to avoid orientation-induced stiffening. Tubing is tested for tensile strength and elongation according to ISO 527-2, for Shore A hardness according to ISO 868, and for kink resistance using a radius test specified in the device design validation plan. Because the grade is an ethylene-α-olefin copolymer, compatibility with olefin polymer food-contact applications can be evaluated under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and Regulation (EU) No 10/2011. Medical device evaluation for prolonged contact includes cytotoxicity testing according to ISO 10993-5, irritation testing according to ISO 10993-10, and systemic toxicity testing according to ISO 10993-11. The material is not a substitute for device-level validation. End products include enteral feeding tubing, drainage tubing jackets, and flexible film pouches for sterile barrier systems. For ethylene oxide or gamma irradiation at 25–40 kGy, the stabilizer system in the compound controls post-sterilization colour and retention of physical properties.

On monolayer and three-layer blown film lines used for frozen food packaging and heavy-duty shipping sacks, A-20090S is added to LLDPE or LDPE at 10–30 wt%. The film is extruded through a die diameter of 200–300 mm with a die gap of 1.8–2.5 mm, a blow-up ratio of 2.2–3.0:1, and a melt temperature of 195–220 °C. High-shear barrier screws can reduce output because the VLDPE grade has a nominal melt flow rate of 0.8 g/10 min at 190 °C/2.16 kg; therefore, low-pressure mixing sections are preferred. End-product testing uses ASTM D1709 Method A or B for dart impact at −20 °C, ISO 6383-2 for Elmendorf tear, and ASTM D5748 for puncture resistance. The VLDPE domains improve dart impact and puncture resistance only when dispersed homogeneously; melt filtration through a 100–150 µm screen pack is used to remove gel-like contaminants. Typical end products include frozen meat and vegetable bags, ice cream packaging films, and heavy-duty liners for bulk dry goods. The addition level is adjusted according to the target dart impact value and the base resin melt index.

When Halogen-Free Cable Jacketing Requires High Filler Loadings

Halogen-free flame-retardant cable jacketing compounds use A-20090S as an olefin matrix or as a modifier in LLDPE/EVA systems at 20–50 wt% of the polymer phase. Aluminium trihydroxide or magnesium dihydroxide loadings range from 120 phr to 180 phr per 100 phr of polymer, and the compound is processed on a 40:1 L/D twin-screw extruder or a Buss kneader with barrel temperatures not exceeding 180 °C. The upper temperature limit is set by the dehydration of aluminium trihydroxide above 190 °C and by the risk of process-induced crosslinking in silane-grafted variants. Tensile properties are measured according to ISO 527-2, heat deformation according to IEC 60811-508, and limited oxygen index according to ISO 4589-2. Flame spread for single cables is evaluated under IEC 60332-1-2, while automotive cable insulation uses ISO 6722 and LV 112 testing for abrasion and chemical resistance. The finished cable jacket must maintain elongation at break above 125% after ageing at 135 °C for 168 h, depending on the cable specification. Amine-based stabilizers are avoided because they can cause discolouration and reduce oxidative stability in aluminium trihydroxide-filled VLDPE compounds. Published data for A-20090S in this specific configuration are limited; compounders rely on internal dispersion and extrusion trials.

TPO Roofing Membrane Cold Flexibility and Weld Integrity

Roofing membrane extrusion lines running reinforced TPO sheet incorporate A-20090S at 15–30 wt% of the polymer phase, together with PP, fillers, and heat stabilizers. The sheet is extruded through a coat-hanger die to a thickness of 1.1–2.0 mm and laminated with polyester or glass scrim before cooling on a three-roll stack. Low-temperature flexibility is measured according to ASTM D6878 at −30 °C, and seam peel strength is evaluated after hot-air welding with a nozzle temperature of 350–450 °C. The VLDPE modifier shifts the low-temperature brittleness threshold of the PP phase; however, additions above 30 wt% can reduce tensile strength below the membrane minimum unless the PP melt flow rate and filler level are rebalanced. Tensile properties are measured according to ISO 527-3, tear strength according to ASTM D624, and seam peel strength according to ASTM D1876. End products are single-ply mechanically attached or ballasted roofing sheets. Fire classification for the assembled roof system is assessed under EN 13501-5 or ASTM E108, while the olefin resin component is evaluated as part of the membrane formulation, not as a standalone fire-rated material. Published data for A-20090S in TPO membranes is limited; external trials are required to confirm the seam weld window and heat ageing behaviour.

Tuning Shore A Hardness in Olefin-Based TPE Compounds

To obtain Shore A hardness values below 80 in olefin-based TPE compounds, A-20090S is blended with polypropylene, SEBS, and white oil at 30–60 wt%. The compound is produced on a 40:1 L/D twin-screw extruder with a melt temperature of 180–210 °C, and the oil is injected downstream to prevent phase inversion in the mixing zone. Shore A hardness is measured according to ISO 868 after a 15 s application time. Tensile properties are tested according to ISO 37, compression set according to ISO 815, and tear strength according to ISO 34-1. The VLDPE component contributes softness and reduces hard-phase continuity; in injection-moulded soft-touch grips, mould shrinkage is measured over 24 h at 23 °C and 50% RH. End products include soft-touch tool grips, automotive floor mats, and footwear midsoles. The upper service temperature is determined by the PP phase and SEBS structure rather than by the VLDPE component. Because oil migration and surface tack are inversely related to VLDPE domain crystallinity, formulations with white oil loadings above 50 phr require verification of fogging and coefficient of friction.
