Application of Mitsui Chemicals TAFMER VLDPE A-20085S

In calendered polypropylene sheet for vacuum-formed instrument panel skins, Mitsui Chemicals TAFMER VLDPE A-20085S is supplied as a pelletized ethylene/α-olefin copolymer with a nominal density of 0.885 g/cm³ per ISO 1183-1:2019 and a melt mass-flow rate of 0.8 g/10 min at 190 °C/2.16 kg per ISO 1133-1:2022. Compounding is carried out on a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with L/D 48:1, segmented screw elements, and vacuum degassing. A-20085S is gravimetrically fed at 20–30 wt% into a PP homopolymer having an MFR of 1–5 g/10 min. The melt temperature is maintained between 190 °C and 220 °C to limit shear heating. The compound strand is cooled in a water bath at 20–30 °C and pelletized. The resulting sheet, typically 0.8–1.2 mm thick, is calendered with roll-stack temperatures between 30 °C and 50 °C. Vacuum forming is executed at sheet surface temperatures of 150–175 °C. Low-temperature ductility is assessed by notched Charpy impact at −30 °C under ISO 179-1/1eA. The modifier suppresses the ductile-to-brittle transition below service temperature by disrupting crystalline polyethylene segments in the PP matrix. Compounding temperatures above 230 °C are avoided because surface gloss variation and molecular weight reduction become detectable. If pellets are stored in ambient relative humidity above 70 %, surface moisture is removed by a desiccant dryer at 60 °C for 2 h before sheet extrusion. Published data for this specific vacuum-formed skin configuration are limited.

Why Does Halogen-Free Cable Sheathing Require a Controlled Melt Temperature Below 180 °C?

Halogen-free sheathing compound formulations for building wire and control cable require a modifier that retains elongation at high aluminum trihydroxide loadings. A-20085S is blended into an LLDPE or EVA carrier at polymer-fraction loadings of 10–20 wt%. The formulation contains aluminum trihydroxide at 150–200 phr to satisfy acid-gas and smoke-density requirements. Mixing is performed in a reciprocating single-screw ko-kneader or a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with side-stuffer ports. Barrel temperatures are set from 120 °C in the feed zone to 160 °C at the discharge zone. The head temperature is held below 180 °C because aluminum trihydroxide releases chemically bound water near 180–220 °C. Water release during extrusion causes surface porosity and tensile strength reduction. Cable sheathing is applied on a single-screw extruder with L/D 24:1–30:1, compression ratio 2.5:1–3.0:1, and a barrier screw design. Melt temperature at the crosshead die is controlled at 150–175 °C. The compound is drawn through a crosshead die and cooled in a water trough with a first-stage temperature of 60–80 °C to prevent shock cooling and internal voiding. Flame propagation is evaluated under IEC 60332-1-2. Halogen acid gas evolution is tested per IEC 60754-1 and EN 50267-2-2. Smoke density is measured by IEC 61034-2. Tensile strength and elongation at break are determined on dumb-bell specimens conditioned at 23 ± 2 °C and 50 ± 10 % relative humidity per IEC 60811-501. Heat ageing is conducted at 110 °C for 168 h per IEC 60811-401. A-20085S alone does not provide char integrity. A char-forming system based on zinc borate or ammonium polyphosphate is added at 5–15 phr where vertical flame performance is required. Copper-contacting cable compounds include a metal deactivator. Without it, copper-catalyzed oxidation accelerates embrittlement at conductor operating temperatures above 90 °C.

Chemically Crosslinked Polyolefin Foam: Azodicarbonamide Decomposition and Cell Stabilization

A-20085S serves as the low-crystalline fraction in chemically crosslinked polyolefin foam used for gasketing, thermal insulation, and automotive interior filling. The foam formulation contains 100 phr A-20085S, 5–15 phr azodicarbonamide blowing agent, 0.5–1.5 phr dicumyl peroxide crosslinking agent, and 0.2–0.5 phr antioxidant. Mixing is performed on a two-roll mill at 105–115 °C. That temperature is below both the peroxide decomposition onset and the activated blowing agent decomposition onset. The sheet is then compression molded or press-cured at 160–175 °C to decompose the peroxide and azodicarbonamide. The processing window is narrow. Dicumyl peroxide has a half-life of approximately 1 min at 171 °C. Azodicarbonamide decomposition begins near 195 °C in the pure grade, but in the presence of zinc oxide at 1–3 phr the peak decomposition shifts to approximately 160–170 °C. Zinc oxide is therefore used as an activator to align gas release with crosslinking. If the cure temperature exceeds 180 °C before the melt has achieved uniform viscosity, gas bubbles coalesce and cell collapse occurs. Foam density is measured under ISO 845. Compression set is tested under ISO 1856 at 23 °C and 70 °C. Gel fraction is determined by extraction in boiling xylene for 24 h; a gel content of 55–75 % is typical for crosslinked polyolefin foams. Residual blowing agent above 1,000 ppm in the finished foam is undesirable for automotive interior odor limits.

Open-Time Extension in Polyolefin Hot Melts Is Governed by Crystallization Kinetics

Compounding of A-20085S into low-density polyolefin hot melt adhesives is performed in a jacketed vertical mixer with nitrogen blanketing at 160–180 °C. The formulation includes 30–40 wt% A-20085S, 35–45 wt% hydrogenated C5/C9 tackifier resin, 10–20 wt% Fischer-Tropsch or paraffin wax, and 0.5–1 wt% antioxidant. Mixing continues until the tackifier is fully dissolved. The hot melt is applied by slot die or wheel applicator at 150–170 °C. Open time is governed by crystallization rate. Because A-20085S has low crystallinity, the adhesive remains pressure-sensitive for a longer interval than an EVA-based hot melt at equivalent viscosity. Open time is measured on kraft linerboard at 23 °C. Published data for this specific formulation are limited, but the low heat of fusion increases open time relative to EVA. T-peel adhesion is tested under ASTM D1876. Heat resistance is characterized by shear adhesion failure temperature under a 500 g load. Adhesion to high-density polyethylene and biaxially oriented polypropylene is improved by flame or corona pretreatment to a surface energy above 38 mN/m. The adhesive is not formulated for polar substrates such as glassine or aluminum foil under condensing humidity. Water vapor permeates the polyolefin matrix and reduces bond strength.

Post-consumer recycled polypropylene from battery cases and automotive bumper scrap often exhibits elevated melt flow rate and reduced notched impact strength because of thermo-oxidative chain scission during prior service and regrinding. A-20085S is added at 10–20 wt% during re-pelletizing on a twin-screw extruder with L/D 36:1–44:1 and a melt filtration unit using 120–250 µm screens. The melt temperature is held at 200–220 °C. Volatile contaminants are removed by two-stage vacuum venting at −0.08 MPa. Notched Charpy impact at −20 °C is tested under ISO 179-1/1eA. The modifier shifts the notched impact failure mode from brittle crack propagation to shear yielding at the notch root. Flexural modulus is measured under ISO 178. A reduction in flexural modulus relative to the unfilled recyclate is typical; the magnitude depends on residual talc and rubber content in the feedstock. Melt-flow ratio is monitored by parallel-plate rheometry at 230 °C. If the recyclate contains polyethylene contamination above 5 wt%, the compound may exhibit surface delamination in injection molded parts.

Lowering Seal Initiation Temperature in Three-Layer Coextruded Blown Film Through A-20085S Skin Layers

On three-layer blown film lines, the outer skin consists of 20–30 wt% A-20085S compounded into linear low-density polyethylene with a density of 0.918–0.922 g/cm³. The core layer is an LLDPE or HDPE for stiffness. The die is a spiral mandrel with die gap 2.0–2.5 mm, die diameter 150–300 mm, and blow-up ratio 2.0:1–2.5:1. Melt temperatures are 180–210 °C. Seal initiation temperature is determined by making 25 mm wide seals at 0.5 s dwell and 2 bar jaw pressure, then measuring heat seal strength under ASTM F88. A-20085S lowers seal initiation temperature by 5–15 °C relative to an unmodified LLDPE skin; the exact reduction depends on total film gauge and skin density. Dart drop impact is measured under ASTM D1709 method A. Elmendorf tear is tested under ASTM D1922. The sealant layer should not exceed 30 wt% A-20085S if the film runs on high-speed form-fill-seal equipment. Higher loadings reduce coefficient of friction and may cause tracking instability on polished metal collars.

Rotational molding of thick-walled agricultural tanks and liners is performed from a dry blend of LLDPE powder and 10–25 wt% A-20085S micropellets. The mold is charged and heated with a peak internal air temperature of 200–230 °C. That temperature is lower than the 230–260 °C peak air temperature used for unmodified LLDPE, because the lower viscosity of A-20085S promotes earlier sintering. The mold is cooled with forced air followed by water mist. Part wall thickness ranges from 3 mm to 8 mm. Low-temperature impact is evaluated by a falling dart test at −40 °C on specimens cut from the tank wall per ISO 6603-2. Environmental stress crack resistance is measured under ASTM D1693 condition B. The modifier improves ESCR by reducing the crystalline tie-chain density in the LLDPE matrix. Dry blending can segregate during mold charging if the particle size distribution differs by more than 500 µm. Micropellets with a nominal diameter of 250–500 µm reduce fines and blend segregation.
