Application of Mitsui Chemicals HI-ZEX MILLION UHMWPE 240S

On a wet-process lithium-ion separator casting line, HI-ZEX MILLION 240S is specified as the UHMWPE component in a three-part slurry comprising 20–30 wt% 240S powder, 70–80 wt% paraffin oil plasticizer, and 0.1–0.5 wt% hindered phenolic antioxidant such as pentaerythritol tetrakis[3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propionate]. Incoming 240S lots are checked against ASTM D4020 and ISO 11542-2 for powder flow and viscosity; nonconforming oil absorption leads to gel defects during casting. Viscosity-average molecular weight of approximately 2.4×10⁶ g/mol and narrow particle size distribution control oil absorption kinetics; batch-to-batch oil absorption is typically held within ±2 g/100 g. Compounding in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with L/D ratio 48–56 uses barrel temperatures 180–230°C and screw speeds 200–400 rpm. The gel cast through a T-die with die gap 0.8–1.5 mm onto a cooling roll at 40–80°C is extracted with n-heptane or methylene chloride to residual oil below 0.5 wt%. Biaxial stretching at 100–130°C applies machine-direction and transverse-direction draw ratios of 4–6 and 4–7; heat-setting at 120–135°C with 5–10% relaxation stabilizes pore structure. Pre-drying of 240S at 80–100°C for 2–4 h is applied after storage above 60% relative humidity to prevent steam-induced microvoid defects.

Ram Extrusion of Wear Strips for Beverage Conveyor Lines

Food-contact beverage filling lines use 240S powder in hydraulic ram extrusion to produce solid wear strips, chain guides, and star-wheel rub rails. The powder is compacted in the feed section at 20–30°C, then heated progressively through 150–220°C under ram face pressure 15–45 MPa. Because 240S exhibits near-zero melt flow under low shear, barrel residence time is controlled; at melt temperatures above 250°C thermo-oxidative chain scission reduces molecular weight and lowers notched impact strength below the value expected from ISO 11542-2. The extrudate exits a heated die at 180–210°C and passes through a water-spray or stepped air quench; cooling rate is reduced for profiles above 20 mm cross-section to avoid internal voids. Post-annealing at 120°C for 2 h per 25 mm wall thickness is specified to release frozen orientation before machining to ±0.05 mm running-surface tolerance. Finished components contact dry and wet conveyor chains without external lubrication; dynamic friction coefficient against stainless steel is 0.10–0.15 under 0.2 m/s and 0.3 MPa load per ASTM D1894. Conformance for direct food contact is assessed under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU Regulation 10/2011 with overall migration below 10 mg/dm². Shore D hardness, measured under ASTM D2240, is 60–68, and tensile yield strength per ISO 527-2 is 17–22 MPa. Continuous service temperature is limited to 80°C; above this, creep rate increases and dimensional stability of the running surface degrades.

What Governs Stick-Slip Response in Water-Lubricated Stern Tube Bearings?

Because water absorption of 240S is below 0.01% per ISO 62, water-lubricated stern tube and rudder bearing bushes machined from compression-molded stock are designed around predictable dry bore dimensions. In sliding contact against a shaft surface finished to Ra 0.4–0.8 µm in nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloys, dynamic friction coefficient under seawater at 0.25 m/s and 0.5 MPa bearing pressure is 0.08–0.15, depending on shaft finish and water temperature. Radial clearance of 0.5–1.0 mm per 100 mm shaft diameter is applied to accommodate thermal expansion of 1.5–2.0×10⁻⁴ K⁻¹ per ISO 11359-2. Fluted water grooves of 4–6 mm width and 2–3 mm depth are milled at 10–15° circumferential intervals to remove debris and avoid hydrodynamic film collapse at low shaft speeds. Production failures are most frequently traced to insufficient groove area or metal backing corrosion; 240S does not corrode, but direct adhesive bonding to unprotected carbon steel is rejected because crevice corrosion can detach the liner. The continuous-service PV limit is approximately 0.25–0.50 MPa·m/s; exceeding this generates frictional heat and surface galling well below the polymer’s 136°C crystalline melt point.

Compression molding cycles govern filter press plate flatness

Compression molding of 240S into filter press plates for mining dewatering and chemical slurry separation starts with filling a polished steel mold cavity with pre-weighed powder and closing under 5–15 MPa surface pressure. Mold temperature is ramped to 190–220°C and held for 10–15 min per 25 mm thickness to sinter all powder particles; cooling is then controlled at 5–15°C/min to below 60°C before demolding. Cooling-rate asymmetry above 5°C/min difference between top and bottom platens is a known cause of plate warpage exceeding 2 mm/m. Plates of 40–80 mm thickness are subsequently machined with filtrate drainage grooves and central feed holes; cut surfaces retain a surface energy of 28–32 mN/m, which reduces gypsum or mineral scale adhesion. In dilute sulfuric acid at pH 1.5 and 60°C, 240S plates exhibit negligible weight change over 1,000 h because ester or amide linkages are absent. Incomplete particulate fusion is detected by freeze-fracture inspection; scalloped fracture surfaces indicate insufficient sintering rather than ductile tearing. Continuous compressive stress is limited to 5–8 MPa and local temperature to 70°C; above these limits creep deflection under filter closing pressure can exceed 3% strain per ISO 899-1.

When Synthetic Ice Panels Are Cut From Compression-Molded 240S Sheet

Synthetic ice rink fabricators convert 240S powder into 8–20 mm thick sheets by compression molding, then machine tongue-and-groove edge profiles for interlocking installation. The coefficient of friction against stainless steel skate blades under dry conditions is controlled by periodic application of a water-soluble slip agent; without it, blade scraping can raise surface roughness above Ra 2.5 µm and increase glide resistance. Thermal expansion allowance of 10–15 mm per 10 m panel run is required for indoor temperature swings of 15–35°C per ISO 11359-2. Panel joints are re-torqued after the first 72 h of service because creep relaxation at locking tabs reduces interlock force. Published wear-rate data for 240S against profiled stainless steel blades in synthetic ice service is limited; fabricators therefore conduct break-in testing before public opening.

In flour milling and powdered chemical transfer lines, 240S is installed as chute and hopper liners because mechanical fastening, not adhesive bonding, is required. The polymer’s low surface energy prevents dust caking and product hang-up at discharge angles above 45°; liners are fabricated from 10–30 mm compression-molded sheet and secured with countersunk polymer or stainless bolts. Differential thermal movement between liner and steel substrate is accommodated by slotted bolt holes sized for 1.5–2.0×10⁻⁴ K⁻¹ linear expansion per ISO 11359-2. In flour milling applications, compliance with FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU 10/2011 is specified for direct food contact. Abrasion resistance under two-body scratching by hard mineral fillers is limited compared with ceramic-filled UHMWPE grades; 240S is therefore selected for cohesive powder flow rather than sharp particulate abrasion. Continuous service temperature is capped at 80°C; higher temperatures in dryer discharge zones cause fastener bearing creep and liner buckling.
