Petrothene MDPE RR1081 is charged as a 35-mesh pulverized powder with a density of 0.938 g/cm³ per ASTM D1505 and a melt index of 5.0 g/10 min per ASTM D1238 at 190°C/2.16 kg. Rotational molding shops processing agricultural sprayer tanks and inducer hoppers select a 1,000 L upright cylindrical tool with a cast-aluminium mold body, a biaxially rotated drop-arm carousel, and a major-to-minor rotation ratio of 4:1. The dry-blend formulation for black agricultural service contains 2.0 wt% to 2.5 wt% medium-particle carbon black masterbatch and 0.25 wt% to 0.35 wt% hindered amine light stabilizer masterbatch. The oven set point is held between 280°C and 295°C. Peak internal air temperature is held between 195°C and 205°C. Operators observe pinhole formation when the peak internal air temperature falls below 185°C because the powder has not fully coalesced at the upper pole. They observe impact reversion when the peak internal air temperature exceeds 210°C because oxidation reduces notched impact strength. Lot acceptance often includes environmental stress-crack resistance by ASTM D1693 specified above 1,000 h. Demolding is performed at a mold surface temperature of 55°C to 65°C. Warpage observed on production carousels increases when the demolding surface temperature is pushed above 65°C at the bottom corner radius. Sidewall thickness for a 1,000 L tank is typically 6.5 mm to 8.0 mm, and the bottom corner radius is thickened to 8.0 mm to 9.5 mm to survive stacking loads. The tank body is specified under ASTM D1998 for upright polyethylene storage tanks. UN 31H1 qualification for agricultural chemical service requires hydrostatic pressure testing at 1.5 times design pressure for 30 min and stacking at 40°C for 28 days. The copolymer structure provides stress-crack resistance to urea ammonium nitrate solutions up to 30% concentration. Concentrated phosphoric acid above 20% at 40°C is not recommended without internal surface inspection because published data for this specific configuration is limited.
Potable water storage articles require the resin and dry-blend additive package to meet extraction limits under NSF/ANSI/CAN 61. Finished tanks are certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 for drinking water contact. The formulation is restricted to antioxidants, neutralizers and processing aids listed in FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and 178.2010. Zinc stearate loading is kept below 0.1 wt% because higher levels increase total organic carbon in the first 72 h stagnant water extraction. Natural, non-pigmented water tanks are molded with an oven set point 15°C lower than carbon black agricultural tanks because unpigmented MDPE has a narrower thermal-oxidative processing window. Peak internal air temperature is kept below 195°C to avoid carbonyl formation that produces off-taste compounds. A 500 L vertical water tank uses 3.0 kg to 3.4 kg of powder per 100 L of capacity and a nominal wall thickness of 5.0 mm to 6.0 mm. Threaded inlet and outlet bosses are integrally molded rather than welded to avoid internal crevices that retain biofilm. Forced-air cooling at 0.5 m³/min per square metre of mold surface is applied until the mold surface reaches 70°C. A co-molded internal foam skin can be formed by adding 1.0 wt% blowing agent masterbatch to the final charge portion; published data for this layered configuration is limited.

Static tanks for diesel fuel and hydraulic oil are rotomolded with wall thickness from 6.0 mm to 10.0 mm depending on capacity. A 5,000 L vertical diesel tank is processed on a biaxial machine at 8 rpm major and 2 rpm minor rotation. The heating cycle is terminated when the internal air temperature reaches 190°C to 200°C; higher temperatures reduce long-term impact retention after fuel absorption. Fuel resistance is evaluated by ASTM D543 immersion for 7 days at 23°C and 50°C, with weight change below 2% and tensile elongation retention above 80%. The outer wall and the bottom sump are designed with a minimum draft angle of 3° per side to permit uniform powder flow and demolding without hydraulic ejection. Threaded metal inserts are installed in bosses using hot-plate welding; insert pull-out after thermal cycling is controlled by specifying a boss outer diameter at least 2.5 times the insert diameter. The tank is not rated for gasoline blends above 10% ethanol; published data for this specific configuration is limited. EN 13341 marking is used for heating oil storage.
| Nominal wall thickness | Oven set point | Peak internal air temperature | Cooling rate through crystallization plateau |
| 3–5 mm | 260–270°C | 185–195°C | 8–12°C/min |
| 5–8 mm | 275–285°C | 190–200°C | 6–10°C/min |
| 8–12 mm | 285–295°C | 195–205°C | 4–8°C/min |
Playground panels, sliding surfaces and structural posts are rotomolded in double-wall or ribbed configurations. The formulation uses 2.0 wt% to 2.5 wt% UV-stabilized carbon black masterbatch, or a light-stable pigment system containing 0.3 wt% hindered amine light stabilizer and 0.2 wt% benzotriazole UV absorber. Accelerated weathering is run per ASTM G154 Cycle 1 for 3,000 h; retained tensile elongation above 50% is required. The dual-wall tool is rotated at 10:1 major-to-minor ratio in an oven set at 275°C to 290°C. The heating cycle is terminated when the peak internal air temperature reaches 190°C to 200°C to avoid embrittlement around metal inserts. Metal inserts are preheated to 120°C before molding to reduce localized shrinkage porosity. Pull-out strength is tested per ASTM D6117; a 10 mm stainless-steel insert in a 6.0 mm wall typically exceeds 2.5 kN, but this value is configuration-dependent. Pigmented surfaces intended for children under 36 months are tested for element migration under EN 71-3. Heavy-metal pigments are controlled to RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU maximum concentration values. Public playground structures are also assessed under ASTM F1487 for head and limb entrapment zones; rotomolded panel geometry must avoid openings between 89 mm and 230 mm.
In marine flotation applications, the buoy shell is molded as a hollow chamber and later filled with closed-cell polyurethane foam. The shell wall is built to 4.0 mm to 6.0 mm for a 1.5 m cylindrical buoy. The mold is removed from the oven at an internal air temperature of 185°C to 195°C. The cooling rate is limited to 5°C/min to 8°C/min through the crystallization plateau to avoid sink marks at the fill port. A vent tube with a 0.5 mm opening is installed at the mold parting line to maintain internal pressure below 0.2 bar during heating. Bonding of polyurethane foam to the inner surface requires removal of rotational molding peel ply and cleaning with isopropanol. The outer surface is impact tested at -20°C per ASTM D5276. Saltwater exposure is assessed by ISO 4628-2 after 1,000 h neutral salt spray. The shell is not recommended for continuous immersion in aromatic solvent bilge cleaners; published data for this specific configuration is limited.
For insulated fish boxes and food-handling totes, the inner wall is formulated without slip agents that exceed 0.05 wt% erucamide because higher levels can reduce gasket sealing and increase extractable amide. The part is molded as a single-piece double-wall box with a 45 kg/m³ polyurethane foam core injected through a top port after the dual-skin shell is formed. Each skin is 4.0 mm thick. Cycle termination uses an internal air temperature of 192°C to 198°C. The mold is cooled by water mist for the first 8 min and then forced air. Water mist cooling is stopped when the mold surface reaches 90°C to avoid water spotting on light-colored surfaces. Food contact compliance is based on FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU 10/2011 overall migration below 10 mg/dm². The box is drop tested at -18°C per ASTM D5276 after 48 h conditioning. Published data for this specific foam-filled configuration is limited.
