    Application of LyondellBasell MDPE CP814-01

For rotationally moulded vertical agrochemical storage tanks positioned in outdoor dosing stations, LyondellBasell MDPE CP814-01 is specified because its medium-density architecture balances top-load stiffness with slow crack growth resistance in continuous-wall vessels from 2,000 L to 12,000 L. The applicable regulatory envelope includes ASTM D1998-18 Section 6.4.3 for upright polyethylene storage tanks, ISO 16101:2017 Annex A for transportable agricultural tanks, and FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c) 2.1 where the same shell may be cleaned with potable water at ambient temperature. The dry-blend formulation on production floors consists of 100 phr CP814-01, 0.30 wt% hindered amine light stabilizer masterbatch, 0.15 wt% trisarylphosphite antioxidant, and 1.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch with UV absorber function. The powder is pulverized to a particle distribution where 55 wt% to 65 wt% is retained between 150 µm and 425 µm; finer material increases dust loss and coarser material slows densification at the mould wall. On a three-arm independent-arm rotational moulder with a 1,800 kg tool capacity, the heating cycle is set at 285 °C oven air temperature with a peak internal air temperature of 192 °C held for 14 min to 16 min. Shorter peak holds produce sub-surface porosity at the lower knuckle radius where wall thickness falls below 6.0 mm. The cooling leg uses forced air at 3.0 °C/min to 5.0 °C/min until the mould surface reaches 70 °C, followed by demoulding and dimensional inspection using an articulated arm scanner. Terminal components are vertical storage tanks for glyphosate, 2,4-D and sulphuric acid up to 30 wt%, with chemical resistance validated by ASTM D543-21 immersion at 40 °C for 14 days and acceptance at 80% tensile strength retention.

What Limits Diesel Fuel Permeation in Monolayer Rotational Mouldings?

Polyethylene fuel tanks for off-road diesel equipment fall under 40 CFR Part 1060 in the United States and ECE R34 in UN type-approval systems where evaporative emissions and fire resistance are controlled. CP814-01 is used for auxiliary diesel tanks in the 45 L to 450 L range because the medium-density wall provides sufficient toughness under low-temperature impact, but the monolayer architecture is not suitable for gasoline service without fluorination or a barrier layer due to hydrocarbon permeation. The formulation baseline is 100 phr CP814-01, 2.0 wt% UV-stabilized black masterbatch, 0.20 wt% hindered phenolic antioxidant, and 0.10 wt% calcium stearate mould release. The production route is a rock-and-roll rotational moulding machine with a primary rotation of 6.0 rpm and a secondary axis of 1.5 rpm; oven air is maintained at 290 °C and the peak internal air temperature is 185 °C for 12 min. Before demoulding, the part is cooled with forced air at 4.0 °C/min and stabilized at ambient for 24 h to permit dimensional equilibration. Weld-line integrity is verified by ASTM D1998-18 drop impact at -29 °C, with no visible cracking at the inserts. Published permeation data for CP814-01 under 40 CFR 1060.515 specific to this configuration is limited; qualified production-tool testing is required for each tank volume and wall thickness combination. Terminal products are diesel day tanks and auxiliary tanks for agricultural tractors, skid-steers and mobile generators.

Double-Wall Containment Basins and Secondary Spill Control

Secondary containment moulds for chemical palletizing and drum storage are produced from CP814-01 as a single-piece, double-walled structure with an outer shell, open grating deck, and below-deck sump volume sized to 110% of the largest stored container per 40 CFR 112.7(c). The compliance framework includes EPA SPCC 40 CFR 112 for oil storage, 40 CFR 264.175 for hazardous waste containment, and EN 13575:2012 Table 3 where the basin is shipped into the EU. The dry-blend formula is 100 phr CP814-01, 3.0 wt% carbon black masterbatch with a surface resistivity target of 1 × 10^6 Ω to 1 × 10^9 Ω for static dissipation, and 0.15 wt% process antioxidant. The tool is a machined cast-aluminium clamshell with a venting path at the parting line; rotomoulding oven air is set at 280 °C, with peak internal air temperature of 180 °C for 14 min. A water mist cooling step at approximately 8.0 °C/min reduces warpage in the flat grate section; demoulding below 65 °C is required to prevent dimensional bowing exceeding 5.0 mm over a 1,200 mm span. The finished product types are 150 L to 1,500 L spill pallets, drum containment basins, and IBC secondary sumps.

In light industrial water treatment, reverse osmosis pressure shells of 120 L to 2,500 L are rotationally moulded from CP814-01 with a rated working pressure of 0.14 MPa. Potable-water contact compliance is anchored to NSF/ANSI 61-2023 Section 4.1, FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c) 2.1 for olefin polymers in repeated food-contact service, and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 where applicable. The formulation is intentionally reduced to 100 phr CP814-01 and 0.25 wt% hindered phenolic stabilizer; no colourant is added because extractable pigment systems can shift the organoleptic profile of stored water. The moulding process uses a nitrogen purge in the mould cavity at 0.05 MPa and an oven temperature of 260 °C, lower than other CP814-01 applications, to limit thermo-oxidative degradation; peak internal air temperature is held at 185 °C for 14 min. Cooling is controlled at 1.5 °C/min through the crystallization plateau to minimize sink marks around the port fittings, and the mould is not opened above 55 °C. Terminal products are pressure shells for point-of-use reverse osmosis systems, carbon filter housings, and brine tanks. Published long-term hydrostatic creep data for CP814-01 in this exact vessel configuration is limited; hydrostatic design basis qualification should be confirmed against the supplier technical data sheet and ISO 9080:2012 extrapolated data.

When Cyclic Hydrostatic Loading Exceeds 25,000 Cycles in Rainwater Tank Mouldings

Rainwater harvesting tanks in the 5,000 L to 50,000 L range require CP814-01 walls of 7.5 mm to 10.0 mm at the lower sidewall band, where cyclic hoop stress concentrates during emptying and refilling. The product is governed by AS/NZS 4766:2006 Clause 5.3 for cyclic hydrostatic loading, EN 13575:2012 Table 2 for above-ground and partially buried tanks, and ISO 4427:2019 if the tank is connected to potable distribution but not continuously pressurized. The formulation is 100 phr CP814-01, 0.50 wt% UVA masterbatch, 2.0 wt% rutile titanium dioxide white masterbatch to reduce solar heat gain, and 0.15 wt% processing antioxidant. The rotomoulding cycle uses a 4:1 biaxial ratio with primary speed 8.0 rpm and secondary speed 2.0 rpm; oven air is set at 285 °C, while peak internal air temperature reaches 190 °C and is held for 15 min. Cooling at 2.0 °C/min through the crystallization temperature of the medium-density grade avoids excessive secondary crystallization that would reduce impact resistance at the stiffener ribs. Terminal products are above-ground and partially buried rainwater tanks, fire water reserve tanks, and agricultural wash-down reservoirs. The cyclic test requires 25,000 fill-and-drain cycles at 0% to 100% rated capacity without leakage; corner radii of the tank floor must be maintained at or above 25 mm to prevent stress cracking at the mould part line.
