Application of LyondellBasell Lupolen UHMWPE UHM 5000

Dry bulk handling conveyors operating at belt speeds of 2.0–3.5 m·s⁻¹ and carrying phosphate rock, sintered ore, or clinker impose two simultaneous demands: low-friction sliding contact against carbon steel and abrasion resistance under mineral fines. UHM 5000 is introduced as the base polyethylene powder at 100 wt% of the organic resin charge for chain guides and wear strips; where sliding occurs without external lubrication, a molybdenum disulphide masterbatch is tumble-blended to reach 1.5–2.5 wt% MoS₂ in the final compact. The material certifies to ASTM D4020 as ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene, and the finished profiles are validated for Shore D hardness between 60 and 65 under ISO 868 and viscosity number above 5000 ml/g under ISO 1628-3. Ram extrusion with a heated die zone at 200–220°C and a cooling zone below 80°C is used because the resin exhibits no measurable melt flow rate under ISO 1133-1; a conventional single-screw extrusion line with L/D 24:1 fails to convey the powder and generates wall slip with surface melt fracture. After extrusion, profiles are CNC-machined to a dimensional tolerance of ±0.1 mm, with counterbored through-holes and dovetail undercuts formed by high-speed routing. Terminal finished parts include chain guide profiles, conveyor wear strips, corner tracks for bucket elevators, and idler sprocket wear rings.

What Limits Ram Extrusion Output When Food-Grade Dimensional Tolerance Is Held at ±0.08 mm?

In dry food and beverage packaging lines, UHM 5000 is machined into transfer plates, star wheels, side rails, and auger liner segments that run without grease or oil. The governing chemical compliance basis is 21 CFR 177.1520 for olefin polymers, supported by EU 10/2011 as amended by Regulation (EU) 2020/1245 and, where components are inspected under hygiene audits, NSF/ANSI 51-2023. The resin charge is kept at 100 wt% UHM 5000; only a calcium stearate internal lubricant at 0.2–0.5 wt% is permitted to reduce machining chatter and lower surface friction, while carbon black is restricted below 0.1 wt% to avoid visible particle contamination on light-colored conveyor bed surfaces. Processing uses either ram extrusion of rectangular bars or powder-fed compression moulding of slab stock at platen temperatures 200–210°C and pressures 10–15 MPa, followed by CNC milling, edge rounding, and abrasive finishing to achieve Ra ≤0.8 µm on product-contact faces. The production bottleneck is not plastication but cooling shrinkage: if the core temperature at demoulding exceeds 140°C, post-machining dimensional recovery causes flatness deviations beyond ±0.08 mm across a 500 mm length, so output rates are deliberately derated by 30–40% relative to unfilled HDPE lines. Terminal products include rotary star wheels, bottle guide rails, static transfer plates, and auger liners for powdered beverage bases.

Dewatering Elements in Acidic Paper Machine Forming Sections

For paper machine forming sections that run with a wire pH of 4.0–5.5 and ceramic counter-surfaces, UHM 5000 is used in foil blades, forming board strips, and suction box top covers. The material is specified as unfilled resin at 100 wt% because inorganic fillers abrade the forming wire and increase friction; only 0.2 wt% calcium stearate is added for consistent saw cutting and routing. Hardness is verified at 62–66 Shore D under ISO 868, and water absorption is held below 0.01 % under ISO 62 at 23°C for 24 h, which prevents dimension drift on suction box surfaces. The downstream process is powder-fed compression moulding of slab stock with thicknesses from 15 mm to 80 mm, using platen temperatures 200–205°C, pressure 12–15 MPa, and total hold time of 10–15 min per 25 mm of thickness; thin sections are not injection moulded because the resin does not form a true melt. The moulded blanks are then milled to flatness of 0.05 mm/m and dovetailed into stainless steel carriers. Terminal finished parts include forming board strips, foil blades, suction box top covers, and doctor bar linings.

For pickling tanks, electroplating line guide rails, and acid fume scrubber internals, UHM 5000 sheet is specified because the semicrystalline polyethylene resists stress cracking in sulfuric acid up to 30 wt% at room temperature, although published data for this specific configuration in hot oxidizing acids is limited and plant trials should reference ISO 175 immersion testing with the actual media and temperature. The formulation remains 100 wt% UHM 5000 for maximum chemical resistance; if UV exposure occurs on outdoor tank covers, 1.5–2.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch is tumble-blended before moulding, but this is omitted for submerged parts because carbon black can be extracted into aggressive organic condensates. The downstream production sequence is compression moulding of sheets 10–50 mm thick at 200–210°C and 12–18 MPa, followed by water-jet or CNC routing and mechanical fastening with recessed polymer washers; hot-gas welding is restricted to small seams because the high-molecular-weight melt exhibits poor fusion and low weld strength compared with conventional HDPE. Terminal products include acid tank liners, electroplating barrel guide strips, fume scrubber baffles, and galvanizing line wear rails.

When a Primary Clarifier Scraper Blade Slides Against a Polypropylene Sprocket

In municipal primary clarifiers, the scraper blade and its wear shoe slide against polypropylene or cast-iron sprocket teeth at a surface pressure below 0.7 MPa, but the repeated reciprocating motion produces abrasive wear from settled grit. UHM 5000 is used either as 100 wt% virgin resin for the blade body or with a carbon black masterbatch loaded to 1.5–2.5 wt% for UV stabilization on partially exposed deck channels; calcium stearate at 0.2–0.5 wt% is included as an internal release agent for thick-slab moulding. Flexural strength is verified under ISO 178:2019 at 23°C, while tensile yield strength is measured under ASTM D638-14. Production uses compression moulding of slab 25–80 mm thick at 200–210°C, with cooling under pressure at 5–8°C/min to reduce internal voids, followed by CNC routing and hole reaming. Operational boundaries: continuous exposure to aqueous chlorine above 10 ppm at temperatures above 60°C accelerates oxidative embrittlement, and the resin should not be used for pressure-bearing structural members with sustained tensile stress above 5 MPa. Terminal products include scraper blades, chain guides, sprocket wear strips, and clarifier skid shoes.

Port Fender Facing Pads and the Problem of Berthing Impact at −20°C

On quay walls and floating fender systems, UHM 5000 is machined into facing pads, rubbing strips, and articulated bearing blocks that receive berthing impact without lubrication. The resin is compression moulded as 100 wt% UHM 5000; for Arctic and high-UV installations, 2.0–2.5 wt% carbon black is added to the powder charge, and calcium stearate at 0.3 wt% is retained for demoulding. Impact resistance is verified by ASTM D256-23 with no-break specimens, and tensile properties are measured under ASTM D638-14. The production process is powder-fed compression moulding of thick slab stock from 30 mm to 120 mm, with platen temperature 200–210°C, pressure 15–20 MPa, and cooling under pressure to 60°C before demoulding. Thermal drilling or CNC routing then produces through-holes for bolt anchoring; the holes are reamed to avoid knife-edge stress concentration. Published data for UHM 5000 under full-scale berthing impact is limited, so laboratory data from ASTM D256-23 should not be linearly scaled to project-specific energy absorption values without instrumented panel testing. Terminal products include fender facing pads, rubbing strips, dock bumper blocks, and articulated corner pads.
