Application of LyondellBasell Icorene LMDPE Grey Granite

Rotational moulding of non-pressurised liquid storage tanks from LyondellBasell Icorene LMDPE Grey Granite is specified where stress-cracking resistance and low-temperature impact are more important than stiffness. The powder is dry-flowable, with bulk density commonly between 0.52 g/cm³ and 0.58 g/cm³ and a nominal particle size below 500 µm. On carousel or shuttle machines, the closed or open mould is charged with powder, clamped, and rotated biaxially at a speed ratio of 4:1; oven air temperature is held between 280 °C and 300 °C. Internal air temperature at the mould core must plateau between 200 °C and 210 °C for this LMDPE class. Readings below 195 °C leave incomplete sintering and pinholes at the inner wall. Readings above 215 °C accelerate oxidative degradation, and grey granite mineral pigments can catalyse surface oxidation if the masterbatch carrier is incompatible. Wall thickness for vertical cylindrical tanks is normally 6–12 mm, with the base and rim reinforced by local thickening. Cooling is sequenced: forced air at 0.5–1.0 °C/min to 90 °C, water mist to 60 °C, then ambient air to demould. Early water mist creates differential contraction between the outer skin and the molten core; on grey granite parts this appears as whitening, edge curl, and post-mould shrinkage variation. Design verification follows ASTM D1998-21 for upright polyethylene tanks; tensile yield and elongation are measured by ASTM D638, flexural modulus by ASTM D790, Izod impact by ASTM D256, and environmental stress-cracking resistance by ASTM D1693 Condition B in 10% Igepal CO-630 solution at 50 °C. Because grey granite is a pigmented variant, tank qualification should compare notched impact against natural LMDPE, since colourant dispersion quality affects crack propagation.

What Controls Impact Retention in Playground Component Rotomoulding After UV Ageing?

Playground slides, tunnel sections, and climbing panels rotomoulded from LMDPE grey granite are specified for ductility at sub-zero outdoor temperatures and colour stability under continuous solar exposure. The mould cavity is usually fabricated from cast aluminium or steel with an internal surface finish free of tooling marks; defects replicate onto the part surface and become initiation points for stress whitening. Wall thickness for impact-rated shells is set between 5 mm and 10 mm, with the minimum inside radius held above 2.0 times the nominal wall thickness. Oven set point is reduced to 270–290 °C to preserve the grey granite pigment package, and peak internal air temperature is controlled between 195 °C and 205 °C. That lower thermal history preserves impact properties but narrows the sintering window: uneven powder distribution in deep draw zones may leave internal porosity. After demoulding, parts are subjected to accelerated weathering per ISO 4892-3 or ASTM G154 for 3000 h, with colour change measured by ISO 7724 and impact retention by ISO 6603-2 instrumented puncture. The grey granite surface resists chalkiness longer than uncoloured LMDPE because the mineral pigment reduces UV penetration, but a high pigment loading above 2.0 wt% can lower Charpy impact at -20 °C by modifying the crystalline skin. Playground installation must comply with EN 1176 or ASTM F1487 for head entrapment, pinch points, and impact attenuation; the LMDPE shell is a non-structural component unless the support frame is steel or aluminium.

Marine Fender Cores and Foam-Filled Buoyancy Modules

Marine fender shells and buoyancy modules are rotomoulded as twin-walled LMDPE grey granite bodies with wall thickness between 6 mm and 10 mm. The biaxial rotation ratio is adjusted to 4.2:1 on rock-and-roll machines because elongated cylindrical geometry produces non-uniform powder flow if the minor-axis speed is too high. Peak internal air temperature is held at 200–210 °C; insufficient peak temperature leads to weld lines at the parting line and low notched impact in the foam-filling port zone. After cooling, closed-cell polyurethane foam with a density of 40–60 kg/m³, measured by ASTM D1622, is injected into the cavity. Foam exotherm is controlled below 60 °C on the LMDPE inner wall, because prolonged exposure above 65 °C can anneal the semicrystalline structure and reduce stress-cracking resistance. The completed fender is tested under low-velocity compression at 10% deflection in line with PIANC WG 33 recommended fender test procedures; acceptance requires no cracking and no permanent set greater than 5%. Tensile properties after 2000 h immersion in synthetic seawater per ASTM D1141 at 23 °C are measured by ASTM D638. The grey granite outer skin hides marine abrasion marks better than light grey polyethylene, but surface inspection for stress cracks is more difficult than with solid light colours.

Material handling bins and pallets are rotomoulded from LMDPE grey granite for distribution environments where static load, dynamic shock, and chemical washdown overlap. The mould configuration is typically a shallow rectangular cavity with reinforced ribbing on the underside; wall thickness is 8–12 mm at the deck and 5–7 mm in the sidewalls. The grey granite colour masks tyre marks and abrasion better than natural or black polyethylene. On carousel machines with a 3.0 m swing diameter, the oven set point is 280–300 °C and the peak internal air temperature is 200–210 °C. Because large flat decks cool unevenly, air cooling is maintained until the deck surface falls below 80 °C before water mist is used. Demoulding above 90 °C creates deck warpage. Qualification tests include ASTM D638 tensile yield, ASTM D790 flexural modulus, ASTM D256 Izod impact at 23 °C and -20 °C, and ASTM D4169-23 distribution simulation with drop testing by ASTM D5276. The coefficient of friction of the deck surface can be measured by ASTM D1894; a heavily textured grey granite mould surface increases slip resistance but reduces cleanability in food-adjacent operations. If aggressive acids or solvents are used in washdown, chemical exposure is evaluated by ASTM D543 using the specific cleaning agent at its use concentration and temperature.

When Grey Granite LMDPE Replaces Timber in Landscape Edging and Architectural Screening

Landscape edging, planter panels, and architectural screen modules are rotomoulded from grey granite LMDPE where timber rots, splinters, or requires coating maintenance. The grey granite colour permits an appearance close to granite aggregate without post-mould painting. Flat panel geometries are demanding: the mould must maintain panel thickness between 5 mm and 8 mm with rib depth not exceeding 1.5 times the nominal wall. Oven set point is held at 270–290 °C and peak internal air temperature between 195 °C and 205 °C to avoid gloss shift. After demoulding, panels are constrained in cooling fixtures at 70–80 °C for 30 min; this reduces edge curl and flatness deviation to less than 2 mm/m when checked with a 1 m straightedge and feeler gauge. UV resistance is assessed by ISO 4892-2 xenon-arc exposure for 3000 h with colour change measured by ISO 7724; the grey granite pigment package typically shows less yellowing than white LMDPE but higher surface temperature under direct sunlight than light colours. In wind-loaded architectural screens, flexural creep is checked by ASTM D2990 long-term creep testing; because LMDPE has lower modulus than HDPE, span and rib spacing must be adjusted by calculation rather than substituting directly from timber sections.

Agricultural hoppers, feed troughs, and veterinary pen partitions are rotomoulded from LMDPE grey granite because the material resists impact at sub-zero farm temperatures and is not degraded by common fertiliser salts. The wall thickness in high-wear zones is 10–14 mm, while sidewalls are dropped to 6–8 mm to control weight. Peak internal air temperature is set between 200 °C and 210 °C; the grey granite colorant performs best when the powder is preheated to 40 °C to reduce moisture absorption before the oven cycle. Moisture in the powder above 0.05 wt%, measured by gravimetric loss at 105 °C, causes pinholes and porosities at the inner surface. Chemical resistance to fertiliser salts is determined by immersion in 30 wt% urea solution and 10 wt% ammonium phosphate solution at 50 °C for 7 days, followed by tensile retention measured by ASTM D638. Stress-cracking resistance is checked by ASTM D1693 Condition C because wetting agents used in liquid feed supplements are more aggressive than plain water. The grey granite surface hides feed dust and abrasion, but the dark speckle can be harder to inspect for surface cracks than solid light grey; surface inspection under UV light may be required for safety-critical components.
