Rotational moulding of Icorene LMDPE 1615-3442 powder for above-ground potable water storage tanks is conducted on carousel-type rotomoulding machines fitted with cast aluminium multi-part tools. A typical
1,000 L vertical cylindrical tank shell is charged with powder calculated to produce a wall thickness of
6.0 mm using a resin density of
0.935 g/cm³ measured to ISO 1183-1:2019. The oven air temperature is set at
275–285 °C. Peak internal air temperature is maintained between
185 °C and
190 °C; a PIAT below
180 °C leaves an incomplete melt front at the integrally moulded outlet boss, and a PIAT above
195 °C accelerates auto-oxidation so that oxidation induction time at
200 °C falls below
20 min when tested to ISO 11357-6:2018. Primary-axis speed is held at
6 min⁻¹ with a secondary-axis ratio of
4:1 during powder distribution, then reduced to
4 min⁻¹ during densification. Forced-air cooling at
25 °C is applied at
2.0–3.0 °C/min until internal air temperature reaches
80 °C before demoulding. Colour and UV-stabiliser masterbatches are dry-blended at a combined letdown of
3.0–4.0 wt%. The finished shell must comply with FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 for olefin polymers, NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 for potable water contact, and AS/NZS 4766:2006 for pressureless polyethylene storage tanks. Post-mould drilling and tapping of threaded fittings are carried out after the part has cooled to ambient temperature above
10 °C; machining below that temperature produces craze lines around boss transitions.
What Wall-Thickness Threshold Controls ESCR in Pesticide Storage Tanks?
The limiting performance parameter for agricultural pesticide shuttle tanks is environmental stress-crack resistance under Igepal CO-630 because the outer quenched skin of a rotationally moulded wall retains significant frozen-in stress. When the moulded wall thickness falls below
4.5 mm, stress cracks can initiate at the transition between the integrally moulded sump and the sidewall before the first full agricultural season. The LMDPE 1615-3442 powder is therefore charged for a minimum wall thickness of
5.0–6.0 mm on all wetted surfaces. The material is dry-blended with a carbon black masterbatch at
2.0 wt% and a high-molecular-weight hindered-amine light stabiliser masterbatch at
1.0 wt%. Regrind from rejected parts is limited to
10 wt% because higher additions raise the melt flow rate above
2.0 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022 and reduce ASTM D1693 condition A ESCR below
500 h. The mould is a cast aluminium tool with a polished inner surface of Ra
0.4 µm; the oven air temperature is
280 °C, the peak internal air temperature is
187 °C, and the primary-to-secondary speed ratio is
4:1. End products are
200 L,
400 L and
1,000 L horizontal tanks with integrally moulded drain sumps and sight-glass bosses for direct-fill crop sprayer service.

Diesel Fuel Tanks and Post-Mould Annealing to Limit Stress-Crack Initiation
Auxiliary diesel transfer tanks are rotationally moulded with a wall thickness of
6.0–8.0 mm and a low-shear vent that maintains tank-head pressure below
5 kPa. The oven air temperature is set at
280 °C and the peak internal air temperature is capped at
188 °C. The cooling phase is slowed from
120 °C to
80 °C at
1.0–2.0 °C/min to reduce frozen-in stress at threaded metal insert bosses. After demoulding, the moulded tank is post-annealed at
80 °C for
2 h in a forced-convection chamber; this step reduces necked-down stress cracking around brass inserts exposed to thermal cycling between
-10 °C and
40 °C in vehicle-mounted service. The resin is suitable for diesel and biodiesel blends up to
B20, but it is not suitable for gasoline or high-aromatic paraffinic streams because hydrocarbon permeability and swelling produce softening at the liquid line. A
120 L diesel tank manufactured from this powder is commonly fitted with a lockable filler neck and overfill protection, and the shell is inspected to ASTM D1998-13 for polyethylene upright storage tanks and to applicable national road-transport regulations for non-flammable liquid packaging.
EN 71-3 Migration Limits Force a Low-Heavy-Metal Masterbatch Selection
Playground slide segments produced from LMDPE 1615-3442 use a
2.0 wt% letdown of pigment masterbatch that is pre-certified against EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 category III migration limits. The moulding process is single-shot rotomoulding in a cast aluminium slide tool with a wall thickness of
5.0 mm at the entry lip and
4.0 mm on the slide bed. Oven air temperature is
270 °C, peak internal air temperature is
185 °C, and the primary-to-secondary rotation ratio is
4:1. The regulation requires extraction with
0.07 mol/L hydrochloric acid at
37 °C for
2 h and subsequent ICP-OES measurement of soluble barium, cadmium, chromium, mercury and lead. Because the powder is unpigmented natural, the colour masterbatch must not contain lead chromate or cadmium sulphoselenide. Impact resistance of the moulded part is verified to ASTM F963-17 for impact-failure modes at the integrally moulded handhold and slide wall. End products are modular
1.2 m slide segments and tunnel shells with integrally moulded handholds.Underground telecommunications joint chambers are rotationally moulded from LMDPE 1615-3442 as one-piece truncated-cone shells with a wall thickness of
8.0 mm at the base and
6.0 mm at the upper rim. The tool is a steel shell with an external swing diameter of
1.8 m; the rotation ratio is
4:1, the oven air temperature is
285 °C, and the cycle time is
22–25 min. Carbon black masterbatch is added at
2.0 wt% to stabilise the above-grade cover against ultraviolet exposure; the buried body does not require a UV package. Moulded density is checked to ISO 1183-1:2019, and oxidative stability of the moulded shell is verified by oxidation induction time to ISO 11357-6:2018 above
20 min. Structural acceptance is determined by a top-load test at the cover opening with deflection recorded against the purchaser specification. End products are joint chambers with
450 mm and
600 mm internal diameters and integrally moulded cable entries.
When Insulated Food-Transport Liners Are Rotomoulded with the 1615-3442 Powder
Insulated fish boxes and food-transport liners are produced as twin-wall shells with the inner and outer shells rotomoulded separately from the same powder, then joined and post-foamed. The inner shell is run at a wall thickness of
4.0 mm and the outer shell at
5.0 mm. The oven air temperature is
275 °C and the peak internal air temperature is
185 °C; a PIAT below
180 °C leaves inadequately fused corners at the drain-well. The inner shell material must comply with FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU Regulation 10/2011 for plastic food-contact materials. Overall migration is tested with
10% ethanol as a food simulant at
60 °C for
10 days if aqueous or alcoholic food contact is declared. The outer shell is not tested for food contact. After the shells are joined, closed-cell polyurethane foam of density
45 kg/m³ is injected into the cavity through four fill ports; the cavity is vented to prevent distortion pressure above
0.2 bar. End products are
350 L fish boxes and
900 L food-transport liners with integrally moulded fork pockets and HDPE lids.
