Application of LyondellBasell Icorene LMDPE 1490

Rotational moulding of 1,000–2,000 L agricultural sprayer tanks from Icorene LMDPE 1490 begins with powder conditioning at 23 ± 2 °C and relative humidity below 60%. The melt flow rate of 4.0 g/10 min at 190 °C/2.16 kg under ISO 1133-1:2022 permits the powder to pack into 3 mm thick parting-line ribs without pre-compaction, but electrostatic bridging occurs when fines below 75 µm exceed 15 wt%. The density of 0.940 g/cm³ measured to ISO 1183-1:2019 places the grade in the linear medium-density class, providing a balance between biaxial elongation during cooling and environmental stress crack resistance. In a carousel machine with a 2.5:1 swing ratio and a gas-fired oven set at 285 °C, the peak internal air temperature is held at 198–202 °C. Excursions above 205 °C produce oxidative discoloration at the inner wall and reduce tensile elongation at break measured to ISO 527-2:2012 from the nominal 500% to below 250%. Mould cooling at 8 °C/min in forced air to 80 °C before demoulding is necessary to prevent warpage in a 12 mm base boss. The terminal tank is joined to HDPE fittings by hot-plate welding at 210–220 °C; weld seam ESCR testing under ASTM D1693-21 Condition B must exceed 500 h F50 when exposed to a 10% Igepal CO-630 solution at 50 °C. Continuous immersion in aromatic hydrocarbon fractions above 5 wt% is outside the material boundary, and published data for this specific chemical configuration is limited. Compliance is assessed under REACH and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU for heavy-metal pigments. A food-contact declaration is outside the scope of this agricultural tank configuration.

Above 60% relative humidity, the powder requires pre-drying at 60 °C for 2 h to prevent pinhole porosity. Storage in sealed hoppers with nitrogen purge below 40% RH is recommended for high-volume carousel lines in subtropical sites. Batch-to-batch variance in powder dry flow is monitored by apparent density under ASTM D1895 Method A, with acceptance typically 0.34–0.38 g/cm³. Particle-size distribution is controlled by sieve analysis under ASTM D1921; an excessive fraction below 75 µm increases fines collection in mould vent tubes and can produce localised thin regions near the fill port. Mould release is applied as a semi-permanent siloxane coating rather than a silicone spray to reduce surface viscosity reduction at the tool interface.

What Oven Residence Window Preserves Impact Strength in Rotomoulded Diesel Tanks?

Diesel tank tooling differs from agricultural tank tooling in that the wall cross-section is often 6–12 mm and moulded-in metal inserts are avoided to reduce stress concentrations. The same 285 °C oven setting can produce different skin-core morphologies depending on ambient humidity and powder charge mass. A stable peak internal air temperature of 198–205 °C is required; at 190 °C the low-molecular-weight tail is insufficient to coalesce inter-particle boundaries, yielding a lamellar structure with residual voids that reduce notched Izod impact at -30 °C from 18 kJ/m² to 9 kJ/m² under ISO 180:2019. At 210 °C, surface oxidation measured by carbonyl index under ASTM D5576 increases above 0.3, causing part odor and weld-line embrittlement. For a 6 mm nominal wall, the oven residence window of 18–22 min at 285 °C is used on carousel machines with a 3:1 swing ratio; tools thicker than 12 mm require a slower ramp of 4 °C/min to avoid skin-core thermal gradient stresses. Post-mould fluorination is specified where hydrocarbon permeation limits apply. In fluorinated tanks, the surface layer is converted to a fluoropolymer barrier with thickness 20–50 µm, and published data for this specific grade in fluorinated form is limited. The terminal off-highway diesel tank is pressure-tested to 0.3 bar with air under water and then drained at 60 °C for 30 min before fitting.

For tooling with moulded-in brass drain inserts, insert preheat to 120 °C before mould charging prevents differential shrinkage and subsequent stress-cracking at the insert boss. The diesel tank is conditioned at 23 °C for 24 h prior to pressure testing; hydrostatic testing at 0.3 bar is applied after fluorination because the fluorinated surface layer is less ductile than the bulk. In applications where fluorination is not permitted, a polyamide inner liner is specified; published data for this exact grade and liner combination is limited.

In marine aquaculture float moulding, the powder is pre-blended with 2.0–3.0 wt% carbon black masterbatch, 0.2–0.5 wt% hindered amine light stabiliser, and 0.05–0.15 wt% phenolic antioxidant before charging into a double-wall mould. The carbon black loading is set by weather resistance rather than pigment cost; accelerated weathering to ISO 4892-2 Method A with a xenon arc source at 60 °C and 0.35 W/m² at 340 nm is used to qualify a 10-year salt-spray service life. The shell is rotomoulded at a wall thickness of 5–7 mm, with a peak internal air temperature of 200–204 °C. After demoulding at 80 °C, a closed-cell polyurethane foam of density 40 kg/m³ is injected into the cavity under 0.2 MPa; the foam exotherm must not exceed 120 °C at the polyethylene interface or localised internal stress relief can distort the flat float face. The terminal 150 L buoy is subjected to a -20 °C drop impact test from 2 m onto a steel plate, with acceptance based on no visible cracking under ISO 6603-2:2023. Salt-water immersion testing at 35 °C for 1,000 h shows no significant mass gain, but continuous exposure to acetaldehyde or chlorinated solvents is outside the material boundary.

Sea-water absorption of the rotomoulded shell is measured by ASTM D570; weight gain after 24 h at 23 °C is below 0.01%. UV stabilisation with carbon black is preferred over titanium dioxide-only formulations because the latter produces a faster surface chalking rate in salt-spray exposure. The shell is not compatible with continuous immersion in methyl ethyl ketone or high concentrations of aromatic hydrocarbon because these penetrate the medium-density amorphous fraction and reduce environmental stress crack resistance.

Material Handling Bins: Abrasion Resistance and Low-Temperature Drop Impact

Bins for integrated waste handling are rotomoulded at wall thicknesses of 4–6 mm from the same powder. The grade's linear medium-density architecture gives a flexural modulus of 600 MPa when tested to ISO 178:2019, which is sufficient for side-wall stacking loads up to 750 kg in a 1,100 L container. Moulded-in stainless steel hinge pins of grade 316L are placed before charging; improper pin preheat to 120 °C causes localised sinks around the boss. The abrasion mode on the floor of the bin is tested by Taber abrasion with CS-17 wheels at 1 kg load for 5,000 cycles; weight loss below 150 mg is accepted. Low-temperature drop impact performance is evaluated at -25 °C after conditioning for 24 h per ISO 291:2008. Creep under a sustained top load of 3.2 MPa is measured to ASTM D2990-17; the allowable deflection after 1,000 h is less than 12 mm on a 600 mm span. The terminal 240 L bin is labelled under EN 840-1:2020 for mobile waste container dimensions and compatibility with comb lifting devices. Cleaning with diluted sodium hypochlorite at 5% active chlorine is acceptable; continuous exposure to methyl ethyl ketone is not.

The gate-to-gate cycle time for a 1,100 L bin on a shuttle machine is typically 28–34 min, including a 3 min cooling phase with mist at 40 °C and a 5 min forced-air phase. Moulds with insufficient venting emit vapours that condense on the inner wall; the condensate causes delamination at the powder fusion boundary. The part is trimmed with a robotic router using a 6 mm carbide bit at 18,000 rpm, and cut edges are flame-polished at 1,200 °C to close exposed micro-voids.

Cryogenic service conditions impose a different failure mode on LMDPE 1490 than chemical contact. The low-temperature brittleness temperature is reported below -76 °C when measured to ISO 974:2000, so the material retains ductile behaviour in dry-ice environments at -78 °C provided the wall thickness remains above 3 mm. The powder must be pre-dried at 60 °C for 2 h when ambient RH exceeds 60%; residual moisture evolves steam at the inner mould surface and produces a pinhole pattern that becomes visible after thermal contraction. Liners are rotomoulded in thin-wall tools with a 3–4 mm nominal wall and a 190–195 °C peak internal air temperature to avoid over-densification. The liner is then inserted into a polyurethane-foamed insulated shipper panel; the foam cavity is maintained at 50–70 mm to achieve a thermal conductivity below 0.022 W/m·K in the assembled container. The terminal cold-chain container is subjected to 10 thermal cycles from -78 °C to 23 °C per ASTM D4169 distribution cycle, with no cracked corners or delaminated foam. The lower ductile boundary means that wall sections below 3 mm are not recommended; published data for this specific configuration at -80 °C is limited.

The cold-chain liner's thermal contraction from 23 °C to -78 °C is measured by ASTM D696 coefficient of linear thermal expansion; the LMDPE value of 1.4 × 10⁻⁴ K⁻¹ produces a 0.14% linear contraction over a 100 °C temperature span, which must be absorbed by foam adhesion. The liner is radio-frequency welded at 27.12 MHz with a 2 mm HDPE gasket at the lid interface. Weld strength is tested by cutting a 25 mm strip and pulling at 50 mm/min under ISO 527-3:2018; the weld must retain at least 70% of the parent material tensile strength at -40 °C.

When Outdoor Rotomoulded Seating Requires Additional HALS Dry-Blending

When the powder is dry-blended with additional hindered amine light stabiliser for outdoor seating shells, the mixing protocol determines surface bloom resistance. A high-speed paddle mixer operating at 900 rpm for 120 s disperses 0.2–0.5 wt% HALS and 0.1–0.2 wt% benzotriazole UV absorber onto the powder surface without melting the low-molecular-weight fraction. Addition above 0.5 wt% produces white surface bloom after 500 h of ISO 4892-2 exposure; addition below 0.2 wt% fails the 2,500 h xenon arc retentivity requirement for gloss retention above 60%. The seat shell is rotomoulded at 6 mm nominal wall and 202 °C peak internal air temperature; forced-air cooling at 6 °C/min to 70 °C before demoulding reduces post-mould shrinkage to less than 2%. The terminal outdoor seat is fixed to a steel frame with M8 bolts at a torque of 20 N·m; the hole bosses are designed with a 2.5:1 diameter-to-depth ratio to avoid stress cracking. Compliance for the coloured shell is assessed under REACH and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU; the grade is not recommended for continuous contact with chlorinated swimming-pool water above 40 °C.

The outdoor seating shell is subjected to static load testing of 1,500 N applied vertically for 1 h with a 100 mm diameter pad. Cantilever load testing on the seat pan is performed with a 95 kg mass at 300 mm from the backrest; creep recovery after 24 h must exceed 85%. In high-altitude UV environments, the stabiliser package is verified by ISO 4892-2 accelerated weathering rather than ISO 4892-3 daylight simulation because the latter underestimates surface oxidation at the HALS concentration boundary.
